VISION

MISSION

In the world of uvex, we intend to be leaders in innovation – creating global value-oriented growth and the number one position in all our markets and areas of activity. Value follows innovation!

The uvex brand confirms our responsibility. The central theme of protecting people is our mission and this is why we are committed to develop, manufacture and distribute products and services which deliver individual safety and protection in the fields of work, sport and leisure.

Value follows innovation

Corporate vision and industrial health and safety strategy

uvex – a provider of brand systems and an expert manufacturer Based on its mission statement of protecting people, the uvex group has positioned itself as an innovative, value-oriented provider of brand systems and expert manufacturer. Through concentration on the Strategic Business Units of Head Protection (safety eyewear, prescription safety glasses, laser protection g oggles, hearing protection, respiratory protection, safety helmets), Workwear, Footwear and Gloves, along with our six market-oriented Business Units, the uvex safety group is able to offer general, industry-specific and tailor-made system solutions in product ranges which are adapted for markets throughout the world. Our universal strategy and management system supports the process of strategic development and ensures that it is implemented in a highly focused way in all areas of the matrix organisation.

Two partners – one vision

social responsibility

uvex safety group supports Vision for the World e. V. • Around the world, 45 million people suffer from blindness. • 90 per cent of all blind people live in the developing world. • 80 per cent of these cases could have been prevented! Vision for the World e.V. is a charity working to prevent and treat blindness in developing countries and to bring about a sustainable reduction to the risk of developing it. The organisation was founded in 2002. Its members regard their commitment as an expression of their social responsibility, using their experience, expertise and contacts to help the disadvantaged and to support the development of ophthalmic

care in the countries in the developing world. Vision for the World selects its projects in collaboration with recognised organisations with extensive experience, such as CBM – Christoffel-Blindenmission, to ensure that projects are targeted at providing communities and individuals with the material resources they need to help themselves.

uvex safety group – partner of Vision for the World “Our mission statement is protecting people,” explains Frank Seuling, uvex safety group CEO. “As a result, we’re committed to taking our social and ethical responsibilities seriously, protecting people and keeping them healthy in all areas of their lives.”

Vision for the World’s projects include: • Grants to help train medical staff

• Biratnagar/Nepal

Providing financial support for the education and living expenses of two local trainee Doctors

Providing financial resources to build and equip an ophthalmic clinic

• Kathmandu Medical College (KMC), Nepal

• Tanzania

Providing initial and continued training for local Doctors and the means to diagnose and treat ophthalmic conditions (including cataracts)

• International Ophthalmological Fellowship Providing places for “local” Doctors at European universities

www.vision-for-the-world.org 6

Providing medical resources for local and European ophthalmologists in Tanzania

• UV radiation protection projects Building understanding of the risks of UV exposure and how best to reduce its damaging effects, together with the distribution of eyewear with UV protection in developing countries.

The uvex safety group has its roots in protective eyewear and regards its success as a global market leader in that field as inseparable from a responsibility to protect sight. As a partner, the company is providing sustained, longterm support for Vision for the World and its work in developing countries. Particularly important is the charity’s commitment to treating cataracts, which are indeed treatable. The progressive “clouding” of the lens, to the point of total blindness, which characterises cataracts, is caused by factors such as sustained exposure to high levels of damaging ultraviolet radiation – the risk of which is clearly higher in many developing countries.

Advanced Optics by Science uvex lens technology

Through “ADVANCED OPTICS BY SCIENCE”, uvex works with leading scientists to initiate independent research projects. People often complain about the higher order of aberration in safety eyewear, citing difficulties in seeing clearly, such as: • Driving in twilight or at night • Reduction of contrast sensitivity • Traffic light or head lights in twilight appear distorted or with halo and coloured rings • Occurrence of double or ghost-images • Defocus • Diffuse stray and/or scattered light • Starburst – pattern Research conducted by Prof. Michelson and Prof. Langenbucher of the Friedrich-Alexander University resulted in the creation of a new optical class for safety eyewear with wave-front optimized lens technology: Definition without uvex hi-res

Innovation in Communication uvex hi-com

Together with ADVANCED HEARING BY SCIENCE, uvex has developed a program which focuses on constantly improving existing hearing protection technology. uvex has developed a completely new ear plug that will change the way people work. The uvex hi-com is the result of years of research and development, and clearly shows the UVEX SAFETY GROUP’s desire and ability to come up with new innovations. It’s important to choose the right hearing protector for the right noise situation. Choosing a hearing protector with a higher SLC80 than required will mean that hearing conversations, warning signals and any other acoustic communications will be more difficult.

Worn by the Holden Racing Team

Following its mission of “protecting people” uvex has developed an innovative unique head protection solution – inspired by nature. In workplaces where safety helmets are not obligatory, injuries and grazes occur most often. The uvex u-cap draws inspiration from the armadillo with its hard yet extremely flexible shell, which offers not just an excellent design, but also safety and comfort.

The uvex-cap features a unique, ultra comfortable lining for maximum comfort. The sophisticated design consists of four layers: shock-absorbing foam and absorbent fleece, woven into a breathable mesh. The inner shell is ergonomically formed for flexibility and is adjustable to fit multiple head sizes. A low-cut plastic shell provides extra protection for the back of the head. The sweat band is attached using velcro dots and can be replaced as required. E N 812-compliant impact caps provide protection from injuries caused by hitting fixed objects

uvex sil-Wear AgPURE™ nanosilver High-performance antimicrobial coating Silver is a proven and effective, but very gentle antimicrobial substance which is harmless to both people and the environment.

nano silver < 20nm

Silver was one of the earliest disinfectants and today is widely used in medical applications – for acupuncture needles, surgical instruments, dressings and plasters. The eyes of many newborn babies are washed with silver nitrate to prevent infection. AgPURE™ nanosilver has a wide range of use, including protection against bacteria, yeasts and fungi. It is effective at an extremely low silver concentration – approx. 0.01%.

AgPURE™ provides surfaces with a bacteriostatic coating, protecting them (though not their immediate surroundings) against bacteria, fungi and viruses. AgPURE™ is invisible to the human eye and is highly effective without altering basic properties. AgPURE™ surfaces are activated by moisture and normal levels of humidity in air are sufficient for activation.

How AgPURE™ works

Microorganisms

Destroyed microorganisms

Highly effective protection against bacteria, yeasts and fungi. AgPURE™ consists of inorganic particles which measure just a few nanometres. In the outermost layer of each nanoparticle are individual active silver ions.

Air humidity Ag+

AgPURE™ combats microorganisms in 3 stages: 1. R educes the build-up of microbes Fewer colonies, poor growth conditions 2. Disrupts cell metabolism by removing potassium ions Reduces the viability of microorganisms 3. Irreversible reactions with amino acids containing sulphur Destroys proteins and DNA/RNA

For optimum protection, safety and comfort. Your employees face various hazards in the course of their daily work. Everything from light liquid splashes or spillage of liquids up to working with hazardous chemicals and radioactive material in industrial use. Therefore it is important to consider the breakthrough time of permeation for protective coveralls. Permeation is the process by which a chemical moves through a protective clothing material on a molecular level. Molecules of chemicals are absorbed into the outer surface of a material, then diffuse across the fabric and are released on the inner surface. The permeation resistance of uvex fabrics to hazardous substances is determined by measuring the chemical breakthrough time of chemicals through a material. Permeation tests for our protective coveralls have been conducted according to EN ISO 6529/EN 374-3. The data listed in the table above were developed under laboratory conditions. As additional influences such as higher temperatures and mechanical strain often occur in practice, these data should only be used as a guideline. Seams and zipper closures may have lower breakthrough times, particularly when damaged or worn.

104

Prior to use it is essential to check the protective coverall for any damages e.g. broken seams, defective zipper closure or other visible defects which may impair its protection. The wearer is solely responsible for deciding whether the protective coverall in use is suitable for a specific application or not.

What makes a good safety glove? The consistent high-quality of our safety gloves is guaranteed by carefully selected raw materials, solid processing methods and stringent production controls based on the g uidelines of European norms. Equally integral to the uvex approach is our commitment to continuous product development and conformity with new safety requirements. The use of high quality natural fibres that are well tolerated by the skin is the precondition for feeling comfortable. This is critical as only a glove that is worn can provide protection.

Copying nature: a completely new ergonomic fit. The PROFAS F lat-Ergo Technology with anatomically shaped phalanges.

Xtra Grip Technology Secure grip. Excellent flexibility.

Whether it’s in sports, in technical environments or behind the wheel, a powerful grip is essential in many applications. Without it the risk of an accident increases and energy is lost, particularly in wet or oily environments. This applies especially to safety gloves, as a weak grip leads to hand fatigue, increasing the potential risk of injury. With the innovative uvex Profas Xtra grip technology, these problems are a thing of the past.

Multilayer design for greater safety Special coating for a more secure grip Durable nitrile coating Cotton stockinet for real comfort Surface of skin

The highly absorbent cotton lining of the Xtra grip technology gloves ensures exceptional comfort, whilst the addition of a nitrile coating provides absolute impermeability.

Safety gloves can be divided into three different categories: 1. Minimal risks Personal protective equipment (PPE) for minor safety requirements where the user is assumed to be capable of evaluating the impact of the risks, e.g. temperatures up to 50 °C or gardening work. 2. Medium risks PPE that does not fall into categories 1 or 3, e.g. mechanical risks. 3. Complex protection PPE for protection against lethal dangers or serious and irreversible injury, e.g. protection against chemicals. The European Directive 89/686/EEC specifies the fundamental requirements for PPE. Norms for safety gloves were devised for these different requirements.
