FROM THE DIRECTOR I AM NOT A FAN OF WRITING DIRECTOR’S NOTES. At best, I am never quite certain what I’m supposed to write about. At worst I’ll blabber on and on about some minute detail that no one but me will ever notice and so I’m not good at them. In all honesty, I feel the play IS the director’s notes. Just watch, you’ll know precisely how I feel about the material. I don’t know why anyone would be even remotely interested in what motivates a director to direct a play. My son is a dramaturg. Like an actual dramaturg. Award winning. I’m always trying, unsuccessfully, to get him to write my director’s notes because as a dramaturg, it’s his job to be super smart about why a story is important at any given time, how it relates to the time in which it exists, and so forth. He could give you incredible details about Dickens’ life, the deplorable working conditions of the Victorian era, and why we owe the way we celebrate Christmas to his little novella. It’s his job to be very good at writing about that stuff. Not only can I not do that, I have no interest in doing it.

CHRISTIE VELA

My job, as director, is to guide the story from the page onto the stage; a kind of theatrical midwife. No one asks the midwife WHY the baby should be born, they just trust her to help it be born, safely with all its toes and fingers and a not oddly shaped head. and if she does her job right, everyone is happy, and she can steal away into the night like she was never there. I like that. What I can tell you is that I love Christmas Carol to my core. I cherish all the times I’ve channeled my mother to play Mrs. Cratchit. I treasure the production I got to play Mrs. Fezziwig opposite Brent Alford, in which we invented a hilarious and inappropriate backstory for ourselves and the memories of way too early morning matinees standing in the wings in damp Victorian underwear waiting to perform for excited elementary school kids . Fun secret-Santa traditions among the cast and contraband mulled-wine in the dressing room. From directing my first production in 2015, to the disappointment of not being able to direct it in 2020, to being invited back to once again bring it to life, with my friends Joel and Vonda, after almost two very tough years in which we could all use some joy. I love that DTC has raised almost a million dollars for the North Texas Food Bank over the years, and that I’ve been a part of that in a small way! I love how the Cratchits remind me of my own upbringing, poor in material things but rich in love. I love Fred’s party and how all these misfit friends make a home for each other because they have nowhere else to go at Christmas, I love how Scrooge opens his eyes one morning after a night of fitful sleep to see the world in a completely different light, finally and truly AWAKE to what really matters; ready to receive the message that we are here to be absolutely and utterly selfish about making joy possible for others, and in doing so, we might make some for ourselves. Family, Friends, Community. “I SHALL LOVE IT TIL’ THE DAY I DIE.”

I THINK CHRISTMAS CAROL IS THE GREATEST STORY ABOUT REDEMPTION EVER WRITTEN. But honestly, who cares what I think? Just watch the play. Find me after and we can talk about it, face to face, friend to friend, over a bowl of smoking bishop.

All Are Welcome DALLAS THEATER CENTER EDI STATEMENT ALL ARE WELCOME! At Dallas Theater Center, we want to be the best place to work and see theater, and to be a positive and transformational force in Dallas and beyond. We stand-up for equity, diversity, and inclusion across our company and community. As a leading national theater, we recognize that building an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment is central to our relevance and sustainability in the community we serve and love.

DALLAS THEATER CENTER LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We acknowledge the land beneath our feet as the ancestral home of many Indigenous Peoples including the Caddo, Wichita, Tawakoni, and Kiikaapoi, as well as the tribes that may have lived here and roamed the area – including Comanche, Kiowa and Apache – and those indigenous people whose names we don’t know anymore. We honor, revere and respect those who were stewards of this land long before we made it our home. We also acknowledge the neighborhood we inhabit as one of the original Freedman’s towns of Dallas built by those who were enslaved by European colonization.

Please help us to maintain a safe and inclusive space while you are with us. DTC has a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment in any form including the use of racist, sexual or ethnic slurs - be it verbal, physical, or virtual. If you need assistance or witness an instance of harassment, please notify the House Manager immediately.

Since 1982, the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) has provided nourishment and hope to neighbors in 13 counties across our region. As these communities continue to feel the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, NTFB is innovating every day to ensure we meet the needs of the more than 800,000 North Texans who are experiencing food insecurity. This includes 1 in 5 children who do not know where their next meal will come from. The North Texas Food Bank’s mission is to close this hunger gap in North Texas by providing access to nutritious meals. Thanks to supporters like you, last year the Food Bank provided access to more than 125 million meals across our service area – the most annual meals ever in our history.

And the need continues. The Food Bank will soon commemorate 40 years of serving those experiencing hunger, but the pandemic challenged the Food Bank to think in new, innovative ways to address the elevated need. If we want to make a lasting impact in the fight against hunger, we must do more than just provide food. Earlier this year we announced Nourish North Texas, a three-year, comprehensive campaign to raise funds and food. It supports our new strategic plan to provide our hungry neighbors with more Food for Today, while providing Hope for Tomorrow by addressing the root causes of food insecurity. Our objective is to create lasting change for our neighbors and transform how we fight hunger in North Texas in the next 40 years and beyond. This ambitious vision would not be possible without the support of the community. For 14 years, our partnership with the Dallas Theater Center has helped provide access to over 2.5M meals for our neighbors in need. And thanks to a generous match, if you make an additional donation now through December 31, every dollar donated to the North Texas Food Bank will be doubled to provide six nutritious meals. This holiday season, our neighbors need the Food Bank and our Feeding Network of more than 200 agencies more than ever. Please consider donating your time, your voice, nutritious food, or a financial contribution. Every meal makes a difference. Thank you for helping us work toward a hunger-free, healthy North Texas.

Enjoy the show. For information on ways to give, volunteer opportunities and upcoming events, visit ntfb.org/dtc.

DIANE AND HAL BRIERLEY RESIDENT ACTING COMPANY In 2009, with the generous support of Diane and Hal Brierley, Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty reinstated Dallas Theater Center’s resident acting company. His intent was to develop and nurture professional actors within the North Texas community and enable them to make Dallas their artistic home. At the same time, he sought to enhance Dallas Theater Center’s artistic profile and create ongoing collaborative relationships. The ten-member Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company has since become a signature component of Dallas Theater Center’s presence in the Dallas Arts District.

““This play never stops being relevant. After everything that happened in 2020, it’s much more relevant. We found out who was really essential. Teachers, workers, people in the warehouses. Not bankers. This is a battle for Scrooge’s soul. This production illustrates how much our actions mean, how much what we do matters.” Christie Vela Director
