ALL ARE WELCOME! At Dallas Theater Center, we want to be the best place to work and see theater, and to be a positive and transformational force in Dallas and beyond. We stand-up for equity, diversity, and inclusion across our company and community. As a leading national theater, we recognize that building an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment is central to our relevance and sustainability in the community we serve and love.
We acknowledge the land beneath our feet as the ancestral home of many Indigenous Peoples including the Caddo, Wichita, Tawakoni, and Kiikaapoi, as well as the tribes that may have lived here and roamed the area –including Comanche, Kiowa and Apache – and those indigenous people whose names we don’t know anymore. We honor, revere and respect those who were stewards of this land long before we made it our home. We also acknowledge the neighborhood we inhabit as one of the original Freedman’s towns of Dallas built by those who were enslaved by European colonization.
Please help us to maintain a safe and inclusive space while you are with us. DTC has a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment in any form including the use of racist, sexual or ethnic slurs - be it verbal, physical, or virtual.
If you need assistance or witness an instance of harassment, please notify the House Manager immediately.
Once upon a time, an American composer and lyricist found himself, after a dazzling early career, licking his wounds over a failed project. The year was 1981 and the project, well let’s just roll along merrily past that episode, shall we? Determined to give up theater, this tuneful poet thought he might head for Hollywood or pen a mystery novel. But alas, he wandered south on the isle of Manhattan and saw a play at the Public Theater that so inspired him, he knew he couldn’t escape his theatrical fate. Instead, he fashioned a musical about the making of art, and all the anguish and loneliness that accompanies the making.
His fans happily spent their Sunday in the park, exploring the protagonist’s pain, and taking pleasure in cheering our poet again. Our hero paused, mulled his future, and resolved to pen a comedy next. Enough with the sturm and drang of the soul, some laughs would liven his journey and ours. The
result: a frolic into the woods that delighted and vexed and delivered a hex on all who took the journey. Though dark at times, the musical made us laugh at our foibles, smile at our frailties, and see each other as fellow travelers, all hoping to live just a little bit more…happily ever after.
I wish. I wish I could return to the Martin Beck Theater and the preview performance of INTO THE WOODS I saw with my boyfriend on a cold winter’s night in 1987. I wish I could relive the wild joy I felt as the curtain fell on act one. I wish I had known Stephen Sondheim personally, met him for drinks after the show, been the first to read lyrics the whole world now loves.
But alas, like most of us, I will have to be content knowing him through his astonishing body of work. So be it. At every moment in our evolution, we need reminders we are all on the journey together, that we rise or fall as one, and that with every decision, every path we choose, the next generation deals with the consequences. Stephen Sondheim scored the human journey, he musicalized every emotion, and often while listening to his genius, I laugh while I cry, or cry as I laugh. If I seem a bit sentimental, it’s because he’s no longer around to deliver more fits of tears and laughter to the world. He’s no longer here to guide us.
I have one more wish. I wish all of you a happy journey with us through the woods.

In 2009, with the generous support of Diane and Hal Brierley, Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty reinstated Dallas Theater Center’s resident acting company. His intent was to develop and nurture professional actors within the North Texas community and enable them to make Dallas their artistic home. At the same time, he sought to enhance Dallas Theater Center’s artistic profile and create ongoing collaborative relationships. The twelve-member Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company has since become a signature component of Dallas Theater Center’s presence in the Dallas Arts District.
