It has certainly been a long and winding road leading up to the world premiere of The Supreme Leader. I started this play about 7 years ago when Kim Jong-Un had only been in power for a few years and the world didn’t really know much about him. Through my research I was surprised to discover how westernized he was. He loved Michael Jordan and basketball. He went to school in Switzerland. He seemed like a normal kid, very much UNLIKE what he is today.

IT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD SO I KNEW I WAS PROBABLY ON TO SOMETHING. AND SO DID OTHERS. Flash forward seven years and one global pandemic later; I am in awe of all the people who have come together for this world premiere. From the cast, designers, stage management, production and administrative teams. Above all are two people who essentially resurrected this play from the dead. Kevin Christopher Snipes for always believing in the play and Liz Frankel for her incisive notes and introducing the play to a Texas audience at the Alley Theatre. In that audience that fateful day was Kevin Moriarity, who at the time I only knew as the artistic director of Dallas Theater Center. Now he is also the inteprid stage director of The Supreme Leader. All these wonderful people have come together for this world premiere but we are missing one important element. You.

SO I ASKED MYSELF WHAT WOULD A COMING OF AGE COMEDY LOOK LIKE WITH KIM JONG-UN AS THE MAIN CHARACTER?

So let us all finally gather in the land of chocolate and cheese and give ourselves a hearty yeehaw and a yodel. It has certainly been a long time coming and we all deserve it!

DIANE AND HAL BRIERLEY RESIDENT ACTING COMPANY In 2009, with the generous support of Diane and Hal Brierley, Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty reinstated Dallas Theater Center’s resident acting company. His intent was to develop and nurture professional actors within the North Texas community and enable them to make Dallas their artistic home. At the same time, he sought to enhance Dallas Theater Center’s artistic profile and create ongoing collaborative relationships. The nine-member Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company has since become a signature component of Dallas Theater Center’s presence in the Dallas Arts District.
