WELCOME Welcome to Clyde Marina and the 2022 boating season. Clyde Marina situated on the North Ayrshire coast in the heart of the Firth of Clyde, the waters and cruising grounds on our doorstep are world renowned for their spectacular land and seascapes, islands and sea lochs. Steep shores and mountains rising out of deep clear waters with an abundance of wildlife, both above and below the waves, cruising with dolphins and seals and amazing seabird displays, our waters offer Europe’s most beautiful and accessible natural cruising and boating experiences and environments. Passage around the famous Mull of Kintyre and into the stunning islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides with their quiet, clean, white sandy bays and secluded anchorages, or meander through the beautiful Argyll scenery of the Crinan Canal. 14.5 km of picturesque waterway and locks for both yachts and powerboats linking the waters of Loch Fyne and the Clyde straight into the heart of the west coast cruising grounds, surely on the bucket list for most cruising sailors. After great days on the water explore Scotland’s larder and our local cuisine and artisan food and drink providers, or tours of the world famous whisky distilleries around our island shores.

STORM GATE INFORMATION
C
lyde Marina is exceptional in having the provision of a storm gate which is designed to give the maximum protection from wave action and heavy sea states from a westerly quadrant.
The gate is not tidal and so it is not a lock gate, but it closes the basin in storm conditions against heavy seas from the west. When closed, even in the most extreme conditions the water surface inside the marina basin is virtually flat, significantly reducing the wear and tear on lines and fenders and giving extra protection for your boat.
TRAFFIC SIGNALS
Please observe the traffic signals at all times. MARINA OPEN (Harbour Closed)
Generally the gate would be closed in gale force winds from the west that are consistently over 35 kts. If approaching in extreme weather please check with the marina on CH 80 or by phone or contact the Coastguard. The storm gate for you the boat owner means safer, more protected moorings, steadier pontoons and kinder waters for your boat and equipment. When closed, we notify the Belfast coastguard and Ardrossan Harbour Control who change the entry lights to 2 Red over 1 Green and we post a “Storm Gate Closed” notice in our office window. We will normally post entries on the Clyde Marina Facebook page to advise if the storm gate is closed. The Caledonian MacBrayne Arran ferry service shares the harbour and a traffic light system controls movements in the harbour for the short period when the ferry is manoeuvring. Yacht and boat owners are reminded to strictly observe the light sequence and instructions. Like Clyde Marina on Facebook to keep updated on Storm Gate & other news.
MARINA CLOSED (Harbour Open)
HARBOUR AND MARINA CLOSED
Pleasure vessels may proceed to and from the Marina. Commercial vessels requiring permission of Harbour Control are prohibited from entering, leaving or manoeuvring within the harbour.
All Pleasure vessels must clear the Outer Basin, Canting Area and Approach Channel immediately. As a general rule if when approaching the harbour the light sequence is turned to 2 red / 1 green you may continue onwards if already past the red West Crinan buoy, passage through the harbour to the marina expeditiously. Ardrossan Harbour Control broadcasts on VHF Ch 12. if in doubt use CH12 to the Harbour Control during changes to light sequences. Ardrossan Harbour movements are covered by CCTV
Neither Commercial nor Pleasure vessels are permitted to proceed inwards or outwards.
Traffic Lights are mounted on the sea wall south of the lighthouse, on the middle quayside within the harbour plus at the marina entrance. 7

Clyde Marina’s Boatyards We recently developed and opened our second and all new boatyard adding to Clyde Marina’s facilities. As a part of the overall redevelopment of Ardrossan Harbour we are pleased to increase our lay up boatyard space to around 8 acres with spaces for over 300 boats ashore. Developed from a former brown field site, we have invested in creating Scotland’s finest lay-up yard, fully surfaced, lit, power and water supplied throughout, security fenced and CCTV provision. The South Yard continues the maritime heritage of the site on the Ardrossan headland, having been a bustling shipbuilding yard of the same name through the early part of the 20th century. The site had 5 construction slips able to build ships up to 500ft and 9,000 tons which launched directly into the open waters off the south shore. Run for a period of time by Harland and Wolff before closing as shipbuilding declined in the early 1930’s.

EXPLORING THE AREA Wildlife
Goat Fell
The Firth of Clyde, the shores and waters of Arran and the Clyde’s sea lochs are full of life with regular sightings of dolphins, seals and in the summertime are feeding grounds for basking sharks. Overhead watch the diving display of Gannets, one of the UK’s largest and most beautiful seabirds. On the approaches to the marina lies Horse Island, RSPB bird sanctuary with nationally important colonies of Eiders, Cormorants and Lesser black-backed gulls.
Goat Fell is the highest peak on the Isle of Arran, and the perfect viewpoint to gaze across the island and out to sea.
Isle of Arran Sitting on the shore of the beautiful Lamlash Bay, Lamlash is the largest village on the Isle of Arran, which is naturally protected to the east by Holy Island, rising 1,000ft (314m) out of the sea. A picturesque anchorage with good pubs, shoreline walks and much history and character. Lochranza is located on Arran’s north west corner, the village is set on the shore of Loch Ranza. The bay, with good moorings, is dominated by its castle built into the bay on a shingle spit. Lochranza is a favourite spot for red deer, grey seals, otters and sightings of golden eagles. Or for a tasting take a trip to the Isle of Arran distillery and it’s single malts.
18
The mountain stands sentinel above Brodick Castle and reaching the summit takes between 2 and 5 hours, so pack plenty of supplies and make sure you are properly equipped. But we think the views of Jura and Ben Lomond are worth it – on a clear day you can even see as far as Ireland. The Goatfell property also includes 2,400ha of mountain environment and moorland including Glen Rosa, a spectacular example of a landscape shaped by glaciers. www.nts.org.uk/visit/ places/goatfell
Isle of Bute One of the gems of the Clyde Estuary, the Isle of Bute has an extraordinary and varied landscape, secluded quiet sandy bays with colonies of seals to craggy uplands, Bute is a haven for walking, cycling, fishing and wildlife with the most beautiful views and seascapes. When visiting Bute don’t miss out on a visit to Mount
Stuart House, Britain’s most astounding and eccentric Victorian Gothic mansion, a feat of Victorian engineering. Or cruise around the island through the world renowned Kyles of Bute, the narrow sea passage between Bute and the Cowal peninsula. Wonderful scenery, good shelter and pretty villages with pubs and hotels with moorings. Passaging through the Kyles is a great way to or from Loch Fyne.
Loch Fyne The deep waters of Loch Fyne are one of Scotland’s longest sea lochs extending 40 miles (65km) into the Scottish hills. Renowned for its seafood the loch is alive with abundant sea birds and wildlife. Pretty anchorages and the hills climbing out of the deep waters of the loch are the character for these beautiful cruising grounds. Spend a peaceful night at anchor or on the visitor moorings in the calm waters of Otter Ferry or stopover in the natural harbour of the fishing and yachting village of Tarbert, surrounded by heather covered hills. Tarbert is picturesque, historic and lively and a good centre for the cruising grounds of Loch Fyne or down into Kilbrannan Sound along Arrans western shores.
Otter Ferry The local volunteer pier association provide ten moorings and a pontoon for public use just beside The Oystercatcher; the perfect stop off while exploring Argyll by sea. There is no set charge for use of the moorings, but donations towards maintenance are welcome and can be left in the bar or donation box by the pontoon. The Oystercatcher is a relaxed, contemporary pub & restaurant on the East banks of Loch Fyne. They stock a large range of Scottish craft beers & small batch gin & specialise in local seafood.
Tarbert An idyllic Scottish fishing and yachting village surrounding Tarbert’s natural harbour and nestled into the hills of Kintyre. Famous for Loch Fyne’s seafood with a range of good pubs and restaurants. A yachting haven and a vibrant fishing community overlooked by its castle. Tarbert is good jumping off spot for the scenic cruise through the Crinan canal, the short cut to the west coast.

THE GREEN BLUE
C
lyde Marina is proud to continue working closely with The Green Blue, which is the joint environmental programme between the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine. As part of this work our marina has successfully introduced environmental policies, action plans, adopted and facilitated best practice as well as monitoring performance to make further improvements year on year. For example, we have recycling bins at our skip and waste areas and we ask for your assistance in responsibly separating and disposing of waste for recycling. We would also like to draw your attention to the Scottish Governments policy aimed at limiting the introduction and spread of Invasive Non-Native Species in and around Scottish waters, as outlined in The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. In accordance with this we have installed a filtered wash down area where boats can be lifted and washed off to remove biofouling (which may contain invasive species) as well as capture and filter out any antifoul residue. We ask that your boat is lifted, washed and antifouled annually to help prevent the growth and spread on invasive species. If you would like more detailed information on our environmental policies and facilities then we would be happy to provide this. To discover simple sustainable boating best practice for you and your boat visit the Marina reception to pick up ‘The Green Guide to Coastal Boating’ and ‘The Green Wildlife Guide for Boaters’. You can also visit www.thegreenblue.org.uk where you can explore information and advice on a range environmental topics related to recreational boating, as well educational activities, instructor resources and browse through the sustainable product and service directory. 26
THE GREEN WILDLIFE GUIDE
How close is too close? The rule of thumb is to stay at least 100m away from marine wildlife in the water and 50m away from marine wildlife on cliffs and rocks, if you can. That said, sometimes it’s difficult to judge distance, often it’s the wildlife that’s moving closer to you and sometimes it appears unexpectedly alongside your boat! The best you can do is use common sense and err on the side of 28
What should you do? caution. You can judge distance by counting how far away you are in boat lengths. For nesting birds on cliffs, and seals hauled out on rocks and ledges use binoculars to get a better view. If you don’t need binoculars to see the detail you’re probably too close! In fact, using binoculars is a great way to get a good look at all marine wildlife, not just birds and seals, without getting too close.
If you spot something over 100m away, stay on course at a steady speed, but be prepared to slow down to let it move out of your path. If you spot something less than 100m away, stay on course and slow down, but be prepared to stop altogether to avoid risk of collision. Stay at least 50m away from wildlife on cliffs and rocks, and consider slowing down to a speed that reduces noise.
How slow do I need to go? As a general principle, slow down to a speed that allows you to take action if needed to avoid a collision. However, don’t put your boat at risk as it’s necessary at times to maintain speed for the boat’s safety in strong currents or rough weather. If you need to put the engine into neutral to avoid propeller injury, only do so if it is safe for you and your boat. Only re-engage the engine once you’ve checked around you.
How long is too long? If something appears unexpectedly alongside you, for example, a pod of dolphins on the bow wave, let them decide how long they want to stay, and let them decide when it’s time to leave. Do not be tempted to follow them. If you see a marine animal and you’re far enough away to minimise disturbance, spend no more than 15 minutes observing quietly, and if you notice any signs of distress leave immediately.
What shouldn’t you do? Don’t… turn your propeller towards the animals, chase, change course to get a closer look, steer directly towards them, over crowd them or box them in with other boats, block them between you and the shore, split or steer through a group, separate mothers and young, or outstay your welcome if you pause to take a look. 29

HISTORY
T
he town and harbour of Ardrossan have a long history inextricably linked with the sea.
The growth of the railways in the mid 1800s played a major part in Ardrossan’s development. From 1841 to 1848 Ardrossan was an important link in the fastest route from London to Glasgow, by train to Fleetwood and then packet boat to Ardrossan. As the railways expanded after 1848 the entire journey could be taken by rail. Ardrossan town and harbour were serviced by 5 railway stations, 3 of them still remain. As Ardrossan developed during the 18th & 19th centuries it became best known as a port; with coal and iron exported to Europe & North America as well as Ireland for many years.
Shipyards were built and many local firms were involved in building wooden ships, fishing vessels or cargo boats. This continued through the post war period until the competition from abroad damaged Ardrossan’s shipbuilding industry and it ceased to exist much after the 1950s and 1960s. Ardrossan town had grown as a result of the harbour and in 1886 the Ardrossan Harbour Company was formed to deal with the huge increase in use of the harbour. The company built the Eglinton dock, where we are today, in 1892 along with the existing outer breakwater.
Ardrossan continued to flourish into the 20th century with new manufacturing industries, but the harbour declined in latter half of the century. In the 1980s – 90s when apart from the Arran ferry service the harbour had become little used. In 1997 the establishment of Clyde Marina started the transformation of the Eglinton basin from an out of work commercial dock into the now vibrant marina and boatyard and beginning a new chapter in Ardrossan’s maritime story.
The Ardrossan Harbour Company eventually became a part of Peel Ports. 33
