Access, Life Skills and Employment Skills

Prior Pursglove College offers a wide range of courses to support you if you are searching for work or a new career. We offer several types of employability skills courses which will help to prepare you for employment or even to change your career path. Learn how to write an effective CV, prepare for interviews and research prospective employers. These courses are a mixture of online learning, group work and paper-based learning.

There are no formal entry requirements, but students are required to show evidence that they have English and Maths at Level 2 (GCSE Grades A to C) or are willing to work towards Level 2 throughout the course. This is particularly important for those students aiming to go into higher education for careers such as nursing and teaching, as minimum standards are required. Subjects covered on the course include biology, literature, history and research skills.

The College offers an Access to Higher Education Diploma which is aimed at adults who have been away from formal education for several years and want to return to education with a view to progressing to higher education.

Success story Lucy Jones Lucy is a single mum with a goal of going to university to provide a better future for herself and her young daughter. After little formal education, Lucy has plunged into the demands of our Access programme with enthusiasm and determination. “Learning is still hard work, as it was at school, but now I have a reason to learn and goals to achieve. The support from my tutors and fellow students is great and I find myself looking forward to Monday and Wednesday evenings!”

“The Access course has been a challenge for me but I am slowly growing in confidence and thoroughly enjoying the new experiences it offers.” 5

10455 CLL Guide 2010:Vis 1 28/06/2010 10:23 Page 6

Access to Higher Education The Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma is a qualification which prepares students for study at university. It is designed for people who would like to study in HE but who left school without the usual qualifications, such as A levels. Many Access to HE students go on to succeed at university and beyond, with a large number pursuing new careers and seeing changes in their lives that they had never thought possible.

Much of the assessment is by coursework, assignments and written projects throughout the year with two final examinations at the end of the course.

Some students are nervous when they start an Access to HE course, particularly if they haven’t been in a classroom for some time. Tutors are aware of this and take it into account in their teaching. Though you can expect the course to be challenging, the whole purpose of an Access course is to help students to be successful.

Access students are encouraged to update their English and Maths qualifications through the College as many universities and employers require Level 2 qualifications.

Many mature students considering an Access course worry that they may have left it too late. This is certainly not true. Students’ life experiences will be invaluable on the course and it will become very clear very quickly that people studying in universities are of a wide age range. A personal interview with qualified staff will ensure that all your questions are answered quickly and efficiently. No formal qualifications are required, only a strong sense of commitment for this highly rewarding course.

Success story Susan Bowes Susan is currently studying on our Access programme and has been offered a place at university to study forensic biology in September. Susan had not been in education for a long time and found the thought of being in a classroom environment daunting. However she was determined to achieve her goal of getting a degree in forensic biology. Initially Susan lacked confidence on the course but as she has successfully completed modules her confidence and self belief has grown. Susan is a role model for anyone wanting to join the Access programme. Good luck at university, Susan.

6

There are several learner support workshops available to students, including Saturdays, to enable them to successfully complete the course. Access students have their own personal tutor to encourage and mentor them throughout the course. There will be a visit to Teesside University early in the course to enable students to access the Resource Centre and other facilities on offer to university students. Information, advice and guidance is given to assist students with their progression routes, including UCAS applications to their chosen university.

Health & Social Care We offer a range of Health & Social Care courses at Level 2 and 3. Our courses are flexible and suit most students as they are held both in college and in the community, in the evenings and during school hours. Classes are held in areas such as Loftus, Redcar, Eston, Ormesby, South Bank, Grangetown, Redcar, Skelton, Marske, Saltburn, Stockton and Billingham. Others have chosen to continue in education and have gained university places. Counselling Level 2 introduces learners to the use of helping skills in everyday life and work. Success story Beverley Nixon Beverley attends Upsall Hall Centre for people with learning difficulties. She has an illness which affects her breathing and has to spend 16 hours a day on oxygen. For some people this would inhibit their life, but Beverley is determined to live a normal life and always commits herself to everything she does. She is a great example of someone who can enjoy adult learning regardless of any obstacles that get in her way.

“This course has given me the chance to learn new skills and I can now make a calendar and Christmas cards. It’s fun learning new things and doing art work on the computer.”

“I had always been terrified of technology as it was never readily available when I was at school. Doing this course has taught me to not be afraid of a machine. It has allowed me to access the internet at my leisure and given me the confidence to do research online.”

Languages

Prior Pursglove College Community Learning & Leisure Guide 2010-2011

Whether you want to learn languages for conversation, fun, business purposes, or for a qualification, our Italian and Spanish courses can fulfil your needs. Previous language learners have told us that their studies have helped them to improve their job prospects and CV; communicate more easily when travelling abroad; help children or grandchildren to learn a language; keep their minds active; understand and appreciate other cultures; increase their confidence when communicating with friends, family, colleagues or customers; or go on to university or other studies.

Our courses are designed to give you an understanding of different societies and cultures, as well as to teach you to communicate confidently in another language. Courses can lead to certification at the end; in most cases this can be achieved by keeping a portfolio of evidence. Please talk to us about your needs before joining so that we can help you to choose the right language course.

Whatever your reasons for learning, if you choose a course with us we aim to make your studies successful and enjoyable. You will have a qualified tutor who will help you to gain confidence and skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. We offer you the chance to gain recognised qualifications in your chosen language.

Elite Project If you are aged 16 – 19 and currently not in work, training or education or you know someone in this situation then our ‘ Elite Project’ run in partnership with Connexions, could be of help. The project is designed to help young people to get back into education, training or employment. Our activities will be fun and varied; they will give you the opportunity to develop team building, communication and work related skills in a very flexible environment. You will also be able to work towards certificates in English and Maths, and start thinking about qualifications for the future. We can also help you to access guidance and advice for other issues such as health, drug/alcohol addiction and housing so you can concentrate on developing your learning and skills. You will receive High Street Vouchers as incentives on achieving realistic goals. There will also be the opportunity to take part in residentials and outdoor activities.

Success story Sue Sue left school in Year 10 due to serious illness and did not manage to return as she felt that she had been out of school for too long. She had tried alternative education but it was not suitable for her needs. A Connexions advisor then referred her to the ELITE project. Sue was looking for a vocational course and after several weeks on the ELITE programme she joined an NVQ course in one of our outreach centres in the community. She completed NVQ Level 2 and 3 which then gave her the confidence to move on to study A levels.

22

This is a four week programme which will help you make choices for the future. Once you have completed this programme you can progress on to other courses such as the Pathways Programme here at the college. If you want to find out more about this project, then please ring Anne Donovan on 01287 280250. Supported by the European Social Fund

Pathways Programme

Prior Pursglove College Community Learning & Leisure Guide 2010-2011

If you are aged 16 – 19 and currently not in work, training or education, this programme might be just the thing you are looking for. The course is an alternative to the traditional sixth form route and provides you with the skills you need for work or training. Students will attend each session and also one session each week in a tutorial group. They will be able to choose a vocational course and attend a pre-NVQ course in their chosen area. They will then be able to enrol on the NVQ at Level 2 and will be given support to find a work placement. The programme is flexible and delivered in line with your needs and other commitments. You will receive EMA of up to £30 per week for long term courses or £30 in vouchers for the first six weeks for short term programmes. If you want to find out more about this project, then please ring Anne Donovan on 01287 280250.

Extended Project: Level 2 and 3 Tuesday, 1 pm – 3.30 pm

Functional Skills: English and Maths – Level 1 and 2 (GCSE equivalent) Tuesday, 9 am – 12 noon

Preparation for learning and work: Interview techniques, CVs, team building and problem solving Wednesday, 9 am – 12 noon

Vocational Courses: Introduction to NVQs such as Business Admin, Customer Care, ITQ, and Health & Social Care Thursday 9 am – 12 noon or in one of our existing classes

Success story Stephen Stephen left school at the age of 14 with no qualifications and no interest in attending college. His confidence and self esteem were low and he lacked the motivation to try and progress. Starting on the ELITE programme and attending twice a week, he began to work through the levels of English and Maths, finally achieving Level 2 in both. Stephen was then referred to a national company who were offering Motor Vehicle apprenticeships and took part in the three day selection process. He was successful, and has now started his apprenticeship. Eventually, he hopes to secure employment in a local garage.

Frequently Asked Questions Can I get financial assistance? If you have difficulty meeting the cost of a course, e.g. child care provision or course materials, we may be able to help you. To find out more, see page 28.

Do I have to pay to do an NVQ? Your NVQ course will be FREE providing you do not already have an NVQ or any full Level 2 qualification.

Are there any other College courses open to me? The College has a wide range of advanced and intermediate level courses in the full-time daytime programme. We currently have a few adults (over the age of 19) who have joined classes in this programme and are studying, on a part-time basis, alongside our full-time 16-19 year old students. If this appeals to you, then please get in touch with Adrienne who can be contacted on 01287 280250. We also have a range of on-line courses, available through Learndirect. Please call Jan, our Learndirect Manager, for further information on 01287 280250.

Is there assistance available if I have a learning difficulty and/or disability? We treat everyone as an individual and are committed to helping all students to achieve their full potential. If you have a learning difficulty and/or disability, we would welcome the opportunity to meet you. This will mean that you can explain to us the type of help you need to make sure you get the most out of your learning whilst you are at the College. Most parts of the College are accessible to students with mobility difficulties. There are designated parking spaces, automatic doors, ramps, lifts and accessible toilets. Other facilities include reception points with hearing loops, hot and cold drinks and food vending machines together with water fountains in some buildings. Information can be produced in other formats on request, including Braille and large print. We will make all reasonable adjustments to facilities and services to ensure that students with a disability are not substantially disadvantaged or treated less favourably than other students who are not disabled. It would help us to help you, if you would tell us about any support that you might need. In the first instance, you can do this by filling in the section on the enrolment form or by contacting Adrienne on 01287 280250.

What can I expect as a student at the College? The College has a Statement of Service covering the information, advice and guidance we offer adults. Please ask for a copy. We also have a Student Charter which outlines exactly what all of our students can expect. All students receive a copy of the Charter at their first class and copies are also available on request.

Fees & Financial Assistance For courses leading to a qualification Tuition Fee Remission

Learner Support Fund

If one of the following applies to you, and you provide the necessary evidence at enrolment, then you will not have to pay tuition fees.*

The College has a limited amount of money available to support students with their learning. You can apply for help towards the cost of books, materials, travel and childcare.

• You, or your partner, are in receipt of the new Working Tax Credit and have a household income of less than £15,050, subject to confirmation. Award Notice TC602 must be provided as evidence. • You are in receipt of another means tested benefit. Please note if you only receive the new Child Tax Credit you will not be eligible for Tuition Fee Remission.

The Learner Support Fund is not solely there to help people on a means tested benefit. If you are on a low income you are likely to receive some assistance.

• You are aged 16-18 on 31st August 2010.

You will need to make an application to the fund and forms are available from College Reception. If at all possible you should make your application before you enrol and certainly well before the deadline for examination/assessment entries. If you have any questions or need help with completing the form we will be happy to help you.

• You are taking a programme where the learning aim is basic skills.

Adult Learning Grant

• You are unwaged and are dependent on someone in receipt of a means tested benefit.

• You are an asylum seeker in receipt of the equivalent of a means tested benefit.

An Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a grant to help with the cost of learning and to make it easier for you to decide to study for a qualification. You could get a grant of up to around £30 per week if you are studying around 12 hours a week to get your first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and you’re 19-30 years old.

For further information regarding your possible entitlement, please contact Adrienne McCrae on 01287 280250.

*Please note you will still have to pay the £5 registration fee unless you are aged 16-18 or enrolled on a free course. The registration fee of £5 is payable just once in an academic year, no matter how many courses you take.

28

Fee remission does not cover examination fees but you may be able to obtain assistance with their cost from the College’s Learner Support Fund. The Course Information Sheet includes information on course content, and material required and examination fees. Please contact us for a copy.

Please be advised that we do not accept credit or debit card payments. • You have enclosed evidence of your residency status if you have not lived in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years. • If claiming tuition fee remission, an official document confirming eligibility is attached. • If your employer is paying, a letter from them is attached confirming this and the address to be invoiced. • You have enclosed two photographs of yourself with your name and course on the back.

Information in this guide is correct at the time of publication, but circumstances may arise which cause us to revise our provision, fees and fee remission criteria.

Please Note • All students enrolling on a Learndirect course are required to produce one form of identification such as a driver’s license, household bill or passport. • All students enrolling for a course leading to a qualification must pay the £5 registration fee even if their tuition fees are remitted. • Examination fees are payable later in the year, usually after Christmas, and are the responsibility of the student even if tuition fees have been remitted. • You may be able to get financial help from the Learner Support Fund – see page 28 for details. • Refunds will not be made if a student withdraws from a course that runs. They will only be given if insufficient numbers enrol. A minimum number of 12 students is normally required to run a course. • Students are expected to provide their own materials and textbooks. Where materials are provided by the College, students may be asked to pay a nominal fee. • You must bring your receipt along to your first class.
