Sports Enrichment Activities 2010/11 ALL FREE, open to ALL STUDENTS and NO LIMIT on the number of sessions you attend. These activities are a good way to meet new friends and will look excellent on your CV.

5-A-SIDE & KWICK CRICKET (LUNCHTIME COMPETITIONS) Fun, but competitive, competitions played during lunchtimes. Open to students of all levels of ability, both male and female. Simply pick a group of friends and get your entry form in. Knockout tournaments held throughout the year.

DANCE CLASS This lively and energetic class will give you the chance to learn fun and exciting street dance routines, which all lead up to an end of term performance.

BADMINTON CLUB This relaxed session gives you the chance to play singles or doubles matches against other students in the college.

NETBALL, BASKETBALL, RUGBY, VOLLEYBALL, MIXED HOCKEY, FOOTBALL All sessions held either during lunchtimes, on Wednesday afternoons or after college. Available to all students, male and female. Those who show an interest and have ability will be selected to represent the college teams in various fixtures/competitions.

BOXERCISE/CIRCUIT TRAINING

EXTERNAL TRIPS

Lead by a qualified coach, you will be put through your paces in this fun impact class. A lively, energetic session all done to pulse-raising tunes!

In addition to the Enrichment timetable, external trips are also organised for students. Previous trips include, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing and a trip to Prissick Plaza (Middlesbrough). Coming soon: Paintballing, Water sports, and Quad Biking.

FENCING Test your hand-eye co-ordination in this exciting new activity. As usual, open to all students of all skill levels!

TRAMPOLINE Come and learn from scratch or practise your own routines all under the watchful eye of our qualified coach.

COACHING QUALIFICATIONS During your time at college you will be offered plenty of opportunities to gain different coaching qualifications including level 1 in Football, Basketball, Rugby, Cricket, and Volleyball. You can also access the highly beneficial Umpiring course.

MARTIAL ARTS A great way to start the day. Relax your body with some Tai Chi or, if you prefer something more energetic, try Kung Fu, lead by our qualified instructor.

During your time at college you have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities beyond your lessons, designed to really capture your interest or enhance your life experience. Some of these activities will be ‘one off’ opportunities such as foreign exchanges, work experience, charity events or competitions. Others will be ongoing weekly activities such as sport, societies or the Students’ Union. Although there are details in this programme, many additional activities will be publicised throughout the year, so make sure you access Student News on the front page of the Portal to keep yourself informed.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD This fantastic scheme allows you to develop key skills, provide a community service, participate in physical recreation and go on expeditions. Everyone is welcome, whether you have already participated in the scheme or are completely new to it. You need to be available for some weekend expeditions and every Tuesday from 4.00pm to 5.00pm. Particularly useful if you are interested in a career involving leadership, eg. management; education; medicine; armed forces and youth work.

ADVENTURERS PROJECT Do you want to plan a trip to the plains of Africa or the mountains of Europe? The choice is yours – we are just here to help you along the way.

DRIVING TEST THEORY If you’re learning to drive, this is a great way to learn your theory. Our special rolling programme is designed so that you can just pop along whenever you can.

HORSE OWNERS CERTIFICATE Get a certificate that recognises your horse-care skills by learning about correct grooming, feeding, stable care, tack care, mucking out and other aspects of equine care. This course is provided by Askham Bryan College – the specialist agricultural college which shares our campus. Particularly useful if you want to be a vet or work with animals.

EXOTIC HANDLING Learn how to look after exotic animals such as snakes, reptiles and other interesting creatures. This course is provided by Askham Bryan College – the specialist agricultural college which shares our campus. Particularly useful if you want to be a vet or work with animals.

WARHAMMER GAMING Group that gets together to explore battle strategy, paint models and arrange matches. Run by students with initial staff support.

DRAMA

A six hour course which runs at various times throughout the year. You will be instructed in fundamental first aid techniques leading to ‘Emergency first aid at work’ qualification.

The creative writing group (now known collectively as ANON - Authors of No Official Name) is an extremely busy creative writing group. This year they have put together their first anthology entitled ‘A Congregation of Imaginations’ which we expect to be in print before the end of the academic year. Come and join us for your chance at publication.

Designed to provide a thespian outlet for those not taking a Drama course, the focus is on fun and performance – not on heavy productions.

MAGAZINE

MUSIC ENRICHMENT

Organised and produced by students, our magazine is dedicated to covering issues that are of interest to students.

There are opportunities to play, sing and perform in various ensembles, including choir and orchestra. A number of concerts are given during the year. This enrichment activity is dependent on the commitment and loyalty of all the musicians in the college to ensure an enjoyable and fulfilling activity for everyone.

Useful for all careers as there is a legal requirement for qualified first aiders in all working environments.

Attendance at rehearsals is compulsory for all those involved. This is a great opportunity for actors, singers, dancers, musicians and lighting and sound techies.

BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE Introductory course that can lead to a Level One / Two certificate in basic sign language. You will learn and demonstrate the basics of signing so you can converse effectively with other users of this visual language. Particularly useful for careers in: nursing; health care; social care and education.

PRIOR READING GROUP Meets once every month to provide a forum for keen readers to discuss the merits of books they have read. Open to anyone who enjoys reading, not just Literature students.

If you are a budding journalist, or would like to write about sports, music, gigs, politics or anything else, look out for details of the first meeting.

FILM CRITICS CLUB Come along and emulate James King: watch some movies and give your low down at the end. Lots of different types of movies are shown, and you can also choose the movies you want to watch too.

MUSIC JAMMING Come and jam with us each week in the music centre. You might even find that final band member that you need to become a musical success!

A student led, teacher supported group that runs projects focused on building a sustainable future for our environment. Make your mark and make a difference to the college community or the wider local community.

How can a jury be influenced in their decision?

An introduction to programming for science and maths students.

CHINESE LANGUAGE If you want to do something totally different or boost your chances at university, try this exciting and beautifully scripted language. No previous knowledge required and great fun.

CHINESE CULTURE AND FOOD Dip into Chinese culture and maybe even try the delights of Chinese food. This interesting and unusual course could set your CV and university applications apart from the rest.

CHEESE APPRECIATION SOCIETY Meets weekly over lunch to taste and chat about the many varieties of cheese from around the world.

This is a short enrichment course which will suit students who are interested in finding out more about the human mind, and how some people become criminals, and others do not. The course will last for one term, and carry a college certificate. Particularly useful for careers in police work; law; probation service; prison service; criminology or social care.

PSYCHOLOGY FOR EDUCATION Content will involve cognitive development, social learning and classical conditioning all made relevant to classroom practice.

Come and learn algorithmic programming, procedural, OOP and functional programming methodologies. You will work in vpython and possibly gfortran, both of which are open source so you can get free copies to use at home. A fun and stimulating course for all students who have real interest in science and/or programming. Viewed favourably by admissions tutors for students entering mathematics, physics, engineering, computing and possibly the more selective chemistry and biology courses.

Excellent for careers in teaching.
