Color Run

Beautiful downtown Las Vegas erupted in color Saturday, Feb. 16 as the happiest 5k on Earth had participants of all ages and levels begin with white tees and run through four designated color stations to the Fremont Street finish line. The Color Run™ is a crazy, laid-back approach for runners and walkers to enjoy a three-mile course through downtown area neighborhoods as they get splattered head to toe in yellow, orange, pink, and blue chalk-like substances. By event’s end, the streets and congregated after-party scene looked like a Jackson Pollock original.

The sold out event had over ten thousand participants with donations and proceeds benefiting Three Square Food Bank.

Fashion Alley

Another successful fashion alley event took place in Get Back Alley behind DCR on Wednesday, Feb. 20. If fashion by local designers, music and cocktails are your kind of mix, keep your eyes peeled for the next one. Is this blurb a little vague? Good. We want you to see it to believe it. Curiosity never killed no cats around here! This was the second Fashion Alley event, and we promise that you do not want to miss the next one!

At its grand opening on Feb. 19, local entrepreneurs and business employees had the chance to see the open floor plan’s minimalistic yet sleek features encompassed by the building’s original architecture. Mini Maker Faire

The Mini Maker Faire took place Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Historic 5th Street School, complete with a carbon-based robot and cyclists and acrobat performers. Several presentations throughout the day centered on “how the art of making things was commonplace in generations past, and what the Maker movement is doing to bring about a resurgence of the DIY spirit.” Makers of all sorts were there from DIY Chicana Piñatas to SYN Shop, the Las Vegas hacker space, and UNLV’s School of Architecture was even represented. If you missed it, you missed out!

Campus We are continuing to make great progress on our new campus. We are now in the “tenant improvement” phase, which is when we’ll really start seeing things come together.

Café area with a built-in IT helpdesk (like the Genius Bar at the Apple store). You will be able to grab a cup of coffee, chat with friends, and get your computer fixed by our amazing IT team all at the same time!

Bistro: Our new Bistro will be much larger than the one we currently have in Henderson and will offer a casual lounge area and indoor/outdoor seating.

In order for us to move into the “tenant improvement” phase, we had to clear out space. So, instead of just tossing appliances aside, we decided to donate such items to Habitat for Humanity to benefit renovated Las Vegas homes.

For three days, with the help of Pentra Building Group, here’s what we were able to safely remove and donate: • 125 fluorescent light fixtures • 85 sinks • 60 solid doors • 50 toilets • 20 water fountains • … And much more!

DTP UPDATE Behold: a new way to shop, dine, and enjoy the emergence of a refined downtown Las Vegas! Downtown Project, in conjunction with Breslin Builders and Xtreme Manufacturing, has broken ground and are in the process of constructing and transporting cubes to their designated location.

The Downtown Container Park is a revitalization effort that will allow emerging businesses downtown to occupy space fairly

quickly; these efforts are commonly known as “flexible urbanism.” By transforming underused, high-value empty lots into an expansive area of repurposed shipping containers, dozens of small businesses such as cafés, boutiques, galleries, community space, etc. can up-start at a more costeffective rate while creating a personalized, unique shopping experience to customers.

Xtreme Manucaturing’s diverse line of multifunctional cubes has the ability to be

catered to an array of specific businesses.

Such optional features include windows, insulation, interior paneling and trim, plumbing, doors, and HVAC systems. These portable cubes have previously been transformed into living quarters, training facilities, restrooms, and climate controlled labs … Pretty neat!

The Downtown Container Park is scheduled to open Labor Day weekend. Stay tuned for more information to follow.

at the corner of Casino Center Boulevard & Lewis Avenue is Anthony’s Pizza and Deli, a quaint dine-in that feels and smells like it was uprooted from the Bronx itself. Co-owners Anthony Milo, a New York native with over 30 years of pizza-making experience, and Shawn Urbanski, a Las Vegas native, opened their pizzeria on Feb. 4 with increasing fanfare. This Yankeesthemed restaurant with oversize front windows and flat screen TVs allow patrons the flexibility to dine inside or out. The store is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and also delivers within a mile and a half radius.

Anthony’s even has an extended menu to include breakfast dishes such as omelets, pancakes, eggs, and more.

With a bevy of options from pasta to subs to pizza pie you’ll be sure to get through the lunch hour’s out-thedoor line in no time!

Park on Fremont Downtown Gastropub to Serve Beer, Bloody Marys and Upscale Bar Fare LAS VEGAS – Park on Fremont will spruce up Downtown Las Vegas with its March opening at 506 E. Fremont St. The 5,000-square-foot gastropub will offer innovative bar fare and an eclectic art collection, with a laid-back area for dining indoors and antique tables in a lush garden outdoors.

“The patio at Park on Fremont was designed to look like a mature back garden was plucked from a rural setting and transplanted into the middle of Downtown Las Vegas,” says Park proprietor, Ryan Doherty. “That juxtaposition lends itself to a distinctive atmosphere for guests to enjoy exceptional drinks and food outdoors that is unlike anything else in the city.”

The Park logo will be projected onto the concrete at the entryway, where countertop stools align the southwest corner for quick and takeaway dining.

Once inside, an aberrant art collection featuring works by Mark Ryden, Peter Gronquist and Mark Mothersbaughs adorn the walls as well as promote conversation in the rustic 2,500-squarefoot interior. The booths and chairs are covered with an array of rich textured leathers, complemented by dark woods and the reclaimed herringbone floor. Forty-five rpm records played on a 1940s-era jukebox will set the mood, with guest musicians and music aficionados continually curating the music selection.

Out back, plants and flowers overtake the landscape of the patio, creating objects d’art from eroded items such as a footed bathtub overlooking the outdoor bar and a Cinderella-style carriage situated on the rooftop, each blooming with brightly colored flowers. Framed by ornate fencing, the 2,500-square-foot exterior boasts wood salvaged from an old barn and offers antique wood bistro tables for dining and conversation, as well as a game of hopscotch made with mosaic tiles. An 8-foot-tall archangel statue atop the fireplace will provide 13

a stunning centerpiece while a small outdoor bar will emulate an aging greenhouse. Tucked in back of the garden will be a secret smoking area complete with games, including an oversized Jenga and a seesaw, as well as custom art installations.

The gastropub will offer a flavorful menu that includes Hammered Chicken made with red onion, arugula, tomato, Parmigiano-Reggiano and balsamic vinegar; Grilled Cheese served on brioche with American cheese or Brie with Serrano ham; and Stuffed Burgers filled with smoked cheddar and bacon or Gorgonzola cheese and sautéed mushrooms.

The drink menu will offer 100 different beer selections from around the world including St. Cloud, Fosters and Moose Drool in cans, an array of bottled beers and Innis & Gunn, Delirium Tremens and Well Banana Bread Beer on tap.

Numerous craft beers will also be available on tap with selections from Pyramid Breweries, Dogfish Head and Stone Brewing Company. Park will also offer distinctive gin and vodka selections, as well as specialty Bloody Marys and other cocktails all served in mismatched glassware.

Park is owned by business partners, Doherty and Justin Weniger, local businessman, Michael Parks, CEO and founder of Insomniac Events, Pasquale Rotella, and hospitality veteran, Kenna Warner.

Mingo Kitchen & Lounge, an American

and Latin-influenced menu is opening its doors in April in hopes of bringing more downtown residents to the 18b Arts District. Situated inside Art Square with its entrance facing the gallery’s openair art garden, this under-construction restaurant will feature tapas-inspired quick and tasty chews along with a full cocktail menu. The lounge is an expansion of Mingo Collaso, a partner of Mundo’s Latin-themed restaurant inside the World Market Center. Before or after meals, patrons are encouraged to journey through the grounds to view the local artwork of Sharon Gainsburg and Eric Burwell or take in a show at Cockroach Theatre.

Radio City Pizza

Radio City Pizza is no ordinary pizzeria, and

it’s so much more than this category can suggest. Owner Elias Ghanem is a soft-spoken Las Vegas native whose mom was an honest to goodness, real Rockette. There is no better way to set off the chic design of the interior, which has lots of deep browns and black that contrasts with beautiful tan granite, than to decorate the walls with mom’s photos and make all the items on the menu from scratch. That’s right. No frozen pizza dough here. It’s all baked in the brick oven that was transported from New York City.

“When you have that homey comfort feeling, that is what will separate us [from competitors],” said Ghanem. “We get outside the box and do everything homemade.”

And … we’ve got Primo Hawaiian Lager in the house! The only place downtown that serves Primo on tap will be Radio City Pizza (at least for now). According to Ghanem, there will be no “Happy Hour” specials as he says all drinks are already at a perfect price point.

And why keep referring to the place as a place, and not a restaurant or a bar? Because this place is more than your average restaurant, bar, sports hangout or music venue. “I think we are a different concept,” said Ghanem.

“We’re a much larger operation than just a pizzeria,” and are here because “Downtown lacked a place to eat and socialize before a night of bar hopping.”

Housing 26 flat screens (which will be the hosts of sporting events like Yankees and Giants games), a dining area, an indoor bar, and an outdoor bar in the back with a raised DJ booth and fire pit, this place is a hangout that offers a range of experiences to its patrons.

Don’t shovel in your Buffalo wings, scarf down your taco pizza, and take a chocolate covered cannoli to go! No! Take your coat off and stay a while. Lounge around with a Stromboli and a Magic Hat #9 or … what?! … garlic parmesan potato chips and something called a meatball delight (four homemade meatballs in homemade marinara with grated parm). Yes. It sounds delightful.

Don’t want the late-night party to stop?

Radio City Pizza is keeping its doors open until 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights and will begin offering delivery services in April to downtowners with the grumbles. Beginning April 1, catering services will also be added to its operation’s arsenal.

With the excitement of moving his business from Tivoli Village in Summerlin to downtown Ghanem wanted to jump in on the frenzy of Fremont.

“This is going to be the center of it,” said Ghanem. “If the area doesn’t get too commercialized, I think [downtown] will get a very cool look and feel. Downtown will define itself, and become a concept of its own.”

The

energy on the construction site of The Center is that bright, uplifting energy that comes with the excitement of seeing a long-awaited project come to fruition, the promise of being better equipped to serve the community more effectively and efficiently, and also that of a new beginning, but The Center has been serving the GLBTQ (Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Queer/ Questioning) community in southern Nevada for a couple of decades now.

I’ve seen a lot of great big things start off tiny; what better thing to witness than the growth of community service? After all, we’re all sharing this mud ball.

The Center began in a room at the Community Counseling Center in 1993. The organization has since outgrown all three of the subsequent Sahara Avenue locations that

followed over the last nearly twenty years.

In its time it’s seen the expansion of programs, services and patronage such that a new space was necessary. The Center’s support pamphlet reads that to date The Center has provided space for the “weekly and monthly meetings of over 30 LGBTQbased community groups […] recreational activities, educational speakers, an annual LGBTQ Youth Prom, computer and internet access, cultural celebrations, advocacy for LGBTQ equality, community referrals, as well as exercise classes and mentoring,” and it’s all free.

As the owner’s representative on the site, Kat Welniak, said while giving us a tour, there are a lot of new services that will be possible specifically because of this new location, a project that has been under way for quite a while.

Executive director Candice Nichols said, “I never thought I’d be this happy over a parking lot.” It was the first day her shoes hadn’t turned brown from having to tread across dirt on the construction zone.

As they leave their old home and enter a new space that may bring more much-needed services (some ideas are a nurse practitioner who could increase the health services and pro bono legal and dental services), employees say there are signs ushering in the new era of The Center. At Sahara Avenue there are flickering and buzzing light fixtures, unreliable internet that needs to be constantly reset, a temperamental restroom, and the sign fell clean off the front of the building. All of this seems to indicate that it’s time to begin anew.

The Center is a beacon of light for those looking for acceptance for who they are.

A representative from The Center says that the most important service it offers is its “existence, a physical location, as a space for LGBTQ people in southern Nevada.” Their new digs are equipped with a café (Bronze), a bakery where fresh bread will be baked every morning, an open event hall that can be divided into six smaller spaces (or left open), a tech center and library, a youth center, a sport court and courtyards.

The testimonials of clients often have similar themes: the organization’s dedication to creating a sensitive and supporting environment, the community it offers and nurtures, and for some it has been a literal lifesaver.

What happens at meetings?

A representative from The Center said, “We have 12 step meetings – both AA and NA. The Wise Womyn have get-togethers weekly, and they may do an activity or catch up and share and laughs.

The L-Group just had a special speaker come in and he led a meditation evening for them, and they have done art projects as well. The Youth Groups have drop-in times, and they may do an activity.”

The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada sponsors the following social and educational programs to benefit the community:

“When you are desperate for help and for someone to listen, where do you turn? I went to The Center, and it saved my life. My name is Andrea, and I am male to female transgender — by my own definition, a lesbian. I’ll be 23 soon. Turning 23 is just another birthday for many. I honestly believe I would not have made it to see mine without The Center in Las Vegas.

I arrived in Las Vegas in October 2005 — alone and scared. I literally wandered by chance into The Center — and this may have been what saved my life. I remember vividly how friendly and concerned the staff was to me. They gave me shelter and food. And they left me with something more that I did not fully realize until later — hope.

The Center gave me the support to finally be happy with myself. The youth groups — R.U.1.2, 17-24 youth, and Trans.lation — helped me to connect to others my own age, and made me feel accepted. It felt as if the meetings were designed specifically for me. For so many of my peers in my same situation they may have ended up homeless on the streets, as sex workers (yes, it does happen) — or worse — but because of The Center, I have a future to live.

Today, I reside in St. Paul, Minnesota — yes, I made it back home.

I am an honor student in the Le Cordon Bleu culinary arts program and I am married to a wonderful and supportive woman. I think often of my friends at The Center, and what they did for me. Because of them, for the first time in my life, I have found myself.”

• Out of the (Gender) Box (biweekly discussion group that provides safe space for folks who identify outside of — or don’t quite fit into — the ‘male’ and ‘female’ boxes assigned to us by society.)

• LGBTQ Youth Prom • Nevada LGBTQ Leadership Coalition

• Trans.lation (Trans.lation provides support and communitybuilding opportunities for transgender people and their loved ones of all ages.)

• R.U.1.2. Youth Group (The members of this group build friendships and explore self-expression through weekly activities, discussion groups and social gatherings.)

• Vegas Mpowerment Project (creates settings where young men 18-29 can express their identities with each other, find support, and band together to take action on issues of importance to them.)

• Senior Activity Program (SAP)

• Community Outreach Programming

• Senior Social Connection

• Stand OUT for Equality (SOFE coordinates legislative lobby days in Carson City to lobby representatives on issues of concern to the LGBTQ community.)

• 17-24 Youth Group (provides an opportunity for young adults to meet their peers in a drug- and alcohol-free space, discuss current events and trends in the overall LGBTQ and global communities, and share personal experiences on topics of interest.)

testing The Center partners with the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD). Together they offer free HIV/STD testing, counseling and prevention and vaccination programs for Hepatitis A and B. The Southern Nevada Health District website reports that at the end of 2012 there were a total of 230 new cases of HIV reported, a decrease, but 8,584 new cases of chlamydia, an increase. Testing is important for everyone in the community, and it’s also important that all people have a place to go that’s clean, comfortable and safe.

“This is the first gender neutral bathroom in Las Vegas and may have further reach in being a first as well. Our transgender population has long wrestled with the public bathroom issue, knowing that choosing male or female has been an issue and could present challenges from others. This bathroom takes away that concern. In explaining to the city — each person has a unique floor to ceiling contained stall affording each person with privacy. A communal sink is used by all and we have a urinal room and we have ADA stalls. Therefore it is the individual person who chooses what they want or need to use.”

The entrance to the new wellness center is separate and private. The waiting area is small with all fresh paint and tile, and beautifully designed new lighting fixtures. There are private assessment and meeting rooms that are separate from any common areas of the building, heightening the level of privacy and respect The Center offers the community.

This shift in entomology has also been in the national news recently as The Respect for Marriage Coalition began running an ad (highlighting GOPers — including Laura Bush who has since requested to be removed) that implies, and national news sources and commentators seem to agree that, most politicians have by now openly made statements in support of marriage laws changing to include everyone.

The politics of this issue are not the point, however. The point is that people are (and have been) in public conversation, and the sensitivity with which this community is treated in regards to the language we use will have a direct impact on the linguistic atmosphere our children grow up in and that we continue to live in throughout our lifetimes. This seems to mean that how we handle our friends’ and neighbors’ differences as a communal body will determine how our world changes or does not, for better or worse.

However, with Corporate Challenge in full swing and summer just around the bend,

Like most cities, Las Vegas is fueled by corporate workout facilities promoting cheap memberships, long contracts, and little to no guidance on procuring the body you’ve always wanted. That’s not the case at Real Results Fitness, a small graffiti clad building situated just south of downtown’s Arts District.

Real Results is an unorthodox circuit group training, boot camp, boutique-styled gym that relies on the tried and true results of its clients and focuses on proper nutrition, time management, and core body workouts.

Paul Rosenberg is the cofounder and president of the nine month old gym and has over 20 years’ experience in the fitness industry as a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym, Family Fitness Centers (currently 24 Hour Fitness), and Las Vegas Athletic Clubs.

Coterie is located at 515 E. Fremont St. in downtown Las Vegas. It is the site of an old check cashing location. The façade is painted white, and the check cashing sign is still there but turned upside down.

What is Coterie? It is a men’s and women’s clothing boutique/ hangout/lounge/art gallery. But it is more than that. It is really what you make it.

Fabulous art pieces from the M Modern Gallery in Palm Springs are on display throughout the store. You can find many different types of artwork. There was a large skull carved out of wood and a framed Shag print as well as many other pieces.

They even have alterations! Just bring your garments by Friday or Saturday from 11 a.m.–4 p.m., and pickups are on Monday nights.

While I was visiting Coterie, a woman came in and asked, “When are you installing a sign outside?” Hannibal, who is the operations manager, told her, “We aren’t. When you walk in, we want you to have your own story. We want to be an open book. You have to be a little bit brave and a little bit curious to come inside. When you come in you don’t know what to expect, and you create your own story. Each time you come in we want it to be dynamic, the story sometimes changes. Everyone’s experience is different.”

The front door features a collage of photos of customers having a great time at Coterie. Hugh changes the collage of photos so that their story is constantly changing. Customers can relax on a large sofa that is set up at the front of the store, there is a magazine rack on the other side along with a few books, and the back counter is set up with stools and Wi-Fi hookups for customers who want to hang out and get online.

The store is a treasure trove of enchanting eye-candy, stylishly stocked with many different brands of men’s and women’s clothing that feature a wide array of lovely lines such as Scotch & Soda, Foley & Corina, and JC Rags. But it doesn’t stop there. There is also a mix of fabulously fascinating jewelry, bags and an eclectic mix of accessories such as pins, computer memory stick rings, gun-shaped combs, ornate animal-head shot glasses and other collectable conversation pieces. Delivering Happiness clothing and products can also be found.

Lines made by locals are featured. Coterie supports local designers with a special display that is housed with creations by Las Vegas designers. If locals want to sell their creations, they can put them on consignment at Coterie.

Coterie opened on Sept. 5, 2012. Sarah Nisperos is the creative director, the vision behind Coterie. She plans the visuals, does the ordering and creates the stock mix for the boutique. Her team takes care of the rest, so Sarah can be free to focus on the creative aspects and transform her dreams into reality.

Coterie is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m to 9 p.m. (or until the party ends).

Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh is an undeniably

brilliant, highly successful entrepreneur who oversees a company worth billions and, in addition, has recently taken on the project of revamping downtown Las Vegas piece by piece.

Hsieh’s project has gained attention from LVA students, who are one block from Downtown Project’s construction site.

Although some students are grasping what’s happening in our backyard, I felt that it was important to inform even more students of the project’s wide scope, so I went directly to the source and spoke with Tony Hsieh himself.

A few months ago, I asked Hsieh if I could interview him via e-mail in order to feature him in our school newspaper. I received an almost immediate response, and like he seems to do with everything, he went above and beyond what I was asking for and scheduled a time for us to meet in person. His only request was that I read his book “Delivering Happiness.”

Upon reading, my fellow editors and I were scheduled to interview Hsieh at The Beat Coffeehouse on Fremont East, a

corner that’s been transformed since the startup of the Downtown Project. Inside waiting was Hsieh wearing daily work attire: a Zappos shirt and jeans with dress shoes, spiffy yet not drawing attention to himself in any way.

Internship opportunities are a huge plus as well. Students interested in pursuing certain careers can shadow others in virtually every field, the majority of which are incorporated with Downtown Project.

As we began speaking to him, his love of people, community building, and creative ideas became more and more apparent. In addition, Hsieh brought with him Rehan Choudhry, CEO of the Life is Beautiful Festival coming in the fall of 2013. Aside from energizing downtown, Hsieh is doing the same for entrepreneurs by mentoring and sponsoring those with new businesses and bright ideas.

Choudhry explained how great of an influence Tony has had in connecting him with others to build his business.

After meeting Hsieh in person, it’s no wonder Zappos employees love coming to work every day and are some of the happiest people in the community.

before sporting events such as Corporate Challenge, Las Vegas, like many communities across the United States, had their fair share of sports. In this pre-1910 image, the New York Store baseball team, possibly the earliest image of a sports team in Las Vegas, poses underneath a mesquite tree.

On the lower left hand corner of the image one of the players is sporting a shirt that says the “Salt Lake Route” with an arrowhead logo. When the railroad was built through Las Vegas in 1905, the route between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles was known as the “Salt Lake Route.” This logo appeared on shirts, hats, letterheads, signs and even

pring is upon us, and that means rebirth … of runny noses, itchy eyes, and painful sinus congestion. For the multitudes who suffer from seasonal allergies, this time of year in Vegas sucks harder than a Dyson vacuum on a shag rug. Not that I would know … I’m allergic to vacuuming.

So what to do when you’re so congested your friends call you Nostril-damus behind your back? Start with the basics, like oldschool saline irrigation. Over-the-counter nasal wash kits use sterilized salt water to wash allergens and snotty boogers straight outta the nose. After this, many docs will add a prescription nasal steroid spray such as Flonase or Nasonex, which can do wonders for nasal inflammation while helping to support our needy friends at Big Pharma.

They’re generally quite safe and effective when used correctly. Over-the-counter, nonsedating antihistamines like Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allegra can help with itchy eyes and some runny nose symptoms, but they’re not great for serious nasal congestion when used alone (so use them in combo with nasal steroids and irrigation). And if you can’t sleep, over-the-counter Benadryl may work

to ease symptoms while knocking you out, LL Cool J style.

One thing to remember: beware of nasal sprays such as Afrin. They immediately help to clear congestion by constricting the blood vessels in the nasal passages. But if you use them for more than three straight days, you can develop such a bad dependence on squirting stuff up your nose that you’ll make Rick James look like a Boy Scout.

Rebound congestion is a real bummer with these sprays. “Afrin is a helluva drug, Charlie Murphy!”

When all else fails, consult your primary care doc who may refer you to an allergist for other interventions such as allergy shots.

And if that doesn’t work, well, there’s always Antarctica. EXTREMELY low pollen count there, from what I hear.

Real Estate Agent Karina Giraldo Karina Giraldo is a premier downtown realtor born and raised in the city of Las Vegas. Her father, also a real estate agent, cultivated this career interest, but nothing spawned it more than the neighborhood of her youth.

“I grew up in these vintage homes, and all my cousins grew up downtown,” said Giraldo. “As a kid, I remember thinking it was strange going to my friends’ homes that were built in the ‘90s. I used to wonder why they all looked the same.”

Giraldo received her realtor’s license while attending high school and has been serving the downtown community since 2005.

Although her license allows her to buy and sell realty in other cities, Giraldo says she’ll always give preferential treatment to her hometown.

Paradise Palms “I love the opportunity to work with people who have never imagined living downtown.

They are usually uneasy about the idea at first. My favorite thing to do is give my clients personal tours of downtown, as most are only familiar with Fremont East and the high-rises, and there is so much more!”

Due to continued interest in Las Vegas real estate, Giraldo represents about a dozen clients per month, mixing between both sales and rentals. Although Giraldo said she could take on additional clients, she says her current level allows more flexibility to build customer relationships while understanding personal needs. “[Growing up] it was normal to be surrounded by tourists, action, lights, and the sound of slot machines. That’s one of the reasons why I love downtown,” said Giraldo. “It feels like home.”

rior to the strip, downtown Las Vegas was the original gaming district of the city, and has come a long way from being home to the hotels and casinos on Fremont Street. As a local, there are now more things than ever to do in the downtown community. Living less than a mile from downtown, I can hop on my bike and be at The Beat Coffeehouse in 10 minutes and spend an evening on Fremont East meeting friends at The Griffin, a cozy bar that offers great beer selection and a mountain lodge ambience.

Downtown is one of the most important stories happening in the entire city of Las Vegas. Real estate in downtown is second on that list.

Downtown housing has been a place where most locals wouldn’t dare live until the past few years. I remember attending the Beauty Bar opening in 2004; my parents were worried to death because of its downtown proximity. Nine years later, I’ve gained plenty of great memories and have never been worried about my safety.

There are a variety of living options for everyone in the area. From small bungalows and ranch homes with large lots to luxurious high-rises and multimillion dollar homes.

Beginning with the downtown core, there are many different, luxurious high-rises to choose from: JUHL, Ogden, Newport Lofts, Soho Lofts, and Fremont Lofts. Each provides a unique appeal to the individuals who are residents.

Starting from the south of downtown’s core, are the neighborhoods of John S. Park, Huntridge, and Paradise Palms. The Huntridge and John S. Park neighborhoods, identified as the “Original Las Vegas,” are situated on the corner of Maryland Parkway and Charleston Avenue. They are home to some of the finest neighborhoods in regards to mid-century modern architecture in Las Vegas. Paradise Palms is a mid-century modern neighborhood in the center Las Vegas, located on the Las Vegas National Golf Course. This subdivision of “futuristic” luxury housing was the first planned residential community in the city. Many of the homes in this tract back up to the Las Vegas National Golf Club.

North of the I-15 freeway you will find larger sized homes of downtown and home of many celebrities including The Killers front man Brandon Flowers, Playboy playmate Holly Madison, and Criminal Minds star Matthew Grey Gubler.

There are only a few times a year people

can pretend to be someone they’re not — St. Patrick’s Day is one of them. Whether you speak in a fake Irish tongue, wear “Kiss me I’m Irish” gear, or go around pinching others like a sneaky leprechaun, March 17 holds some of the craziest parties across the country. Corned beef and cabbage followed by pints of green beer (an association with the country’s lush countryside) is a staple on this day, as the country of Ireland began recognizing Patrick, a patron saint, and the arrival of Christianity in 1737.

If you’re looking for a place to celebrate libations and liberations this year, check out the only Irish pub on Fremont — Hennessey’s Tavern — and follow suit of the Emerald Isle!

Downtown Bike Lanes

Each of these marvels, along with inspiration from the Hoover Dam’s Art Deco style and Bullocks Wilshire front tower in Los Angeles, were combined to create today’s distinctive structure that combs downtown Vegas’ skyline.

Having broken ground in May 2009 and grand opening in March 2012, the Smith Center was strategized and designed with care from its early beginnings.

Taking light from the phrase “God in the detail,” Smith Center designers ensured an elaborate and sophisticated exterior and interior that would truly be oneof-a-kind. Cascading downwards from the glimmering lights of the 16-story Carillon tower, white Indiana limestone decorates the building’s façade. On the building’s east side is the 1.7 acre Donald W. Reynolds Symphony Park, an outdoor concert venue featuring Tim Bavington artwork. Inside, Hoover Dam-inspired motifs, intricate blue iris flower prints, and sculptures and paintings are displayed throughout.

Based on several case studies, performing arts centers have proven to be an effective tool for downtown revitalization, such as Kansas City’s Kauffman Center, a $413-million venue which opened in 2011, in a city that desperately needed a positive shift in its urban landscape.

With Las Vegas needing a similar facelift and a boost in high culture Mayor Oscar Goodman and city planners deliberately followed suit to set aside downtown property. The site was decided near the I-15 and 515 Beltway due to its central location and easy access for residents across the valley.

Incorporated within the Smith Center are three venues: Reynolds Hall, Cabaret Jazz Theater, and Troesh Studio Theater.

Through the assembly of an internationally renowned design team, The Smith Center scoped out historic yet modern venues all across North America and Europe for inspiration, such places including

three-level 2,050-seat theater complete with balconies, dramatic stage and full orchestra pit. The theater is double soundproofed and features auto closing doors to reflect or absorb performance sounds. Such spectacular, worldrenowned performances have included The Tenors, Wicked, and West Side Story.

Although smaller and more intimate, Cabaret Jazz’s two-story club displays dazzling views of downtown, Symphony Park, and mezzanine balcony. Stunning performances and soft lighting create an ambiance unlike any other.

Troesh Studio Theater holds roughly 250 people and is mainly used for rehearsals, film screenings, children’s theater, and social gatherings. Although this space isn’t used for higher profile performances, it is nonetheless state-of-the-art.

Price Point: Do You Happen to Have the Time?

The Lady Silvia is a modern speakeasy that offers a hodgepodge of adventurous signature cocktails and traditional libations as well as tapas-style snacks, called pinxto, that are available from 5 to 9 p.m. Although I’m a sucker for a drink with a cute name, I’ve not had much luck with the seasonal cocktail menu — my Miracle on 34th Street was less than miraculous, but my companion’s Sidecars were spot on. Since a single cocktail here is priced around $11, I find this lady to be at her most alluring during happy hour. I recommend dropping by after work for $3 beers and $6 cocktails from 5 to 8 p.m.

Ambiance: Eclectic Elegance Dramatic floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, sparkling chandeliers, and a checkerboard floor give the place an old-world charm that is unlike most places in Vegas. Couches and chairs are arranged in small seating areas just right for four to six, so a large group would probably need to split up. Although a nonsmoking bar won’t appeal to everyone, I found the lack of cigarette smoke to be a breath of fresh air.

Entertainment: Sidelong Glances There was an old movie playing in the main seating area and a basketball game on the TVs over the bar, but I spent most of my visit there scoping out the scene around me. Depending on the night you visit, entertainment can include anything from a DJ to a jazz band — on quiet weeknights, indie rock plays in the background at just the right volume to allow conversation.

Pitfalls: Are You In? There is a sign pointing out the small parking lot reserved for bar patrons, but the glass doors that lead to The Lady Silvia are unmarked and difficult to spot. If I had come here without a friend who had been before, I would never have spotted the entrance slyly situated between a small art gallery and Globe Salon.

Looking to grab a drink in an elegant environment away from Fremont Street? I recommend taking the short drive or long stroll from the Stewart Garage to The Lady Silvia.

W

e decided to go to Casa Don Juan on a Friday night. I had been there a few times before, but it was always during the day. My fiancé tried to make reservations, but they don’t take them, and after arriving there on Friday night, we could see why! It was super busy!! I love Mexican food, and in my opinion, Vegas has some great options for south of the border flair.

Casa Don Juan did NOT disappoint. We were offered chips, salsa, and guacamole at the start. I always get in to trouble with chips and salsa because I tend to ruin my dinner. The guacamole is fresh and served in a tortilla chip bowl. One drawback was no tableside guacamole, which is one of my favorite things.

Our meals arrived in record time. We got a little of everything: beef chimichanga, enchiladas, tacos, and some shrimp ceviche for the table. Ceviche is fast becoming one of my favorite dishes. The ceviche here was the perfect marriage of avocado, lime, and spices. The only complaint that I had was they got my order wrong, but the mistake was better than what I ordered, so it wasn’t a big deal.

Dessert consisted of cheesecake and flan. I probably would have licked the plate if we weren’t in public!! Casa Don Juan is NOT a quiet place on a Friday night, and I can only imagine that First Friday is off the hook in that joint. We enjoyed ourselves, and we had great service. We were also in and out in under and hour, which enabled us to enjoy the rest of our evening.

Introducing Antojitos

Total cook time: 30 minutes to one hour, or as long as you like.

Prep: Ninjas 10 minutes; Lollygaggers 30 minutes.

Time in the oven: about 10 minutes, or until outside is brownish and turning flaky.

Prep work involves making the cream cheese mixture. The mixture should be placed in the refrigerator until cold. This is optional if

Let the cream cheese sit out while you chop the peppers and onion so it softens. Combine peppers and onion with cream cheese, and mix it well. Put it into the refrigerator.

Preheat the oven to 375ºF. 41

Spread the cream cheese mixture onto a tortilla. The layer should be thin and only be about an eighth of an inch thick. I’ve tried using more, and it just doesn’t achieve the right mixture-to-cheese-to-tortilla ratio in the end. You want the tortilla to be covered so you can’t see it, but don’t heap the mixture on however you are tempted to do so.

Tillamook is my favorite. You could always add some pesto for a pop of color. Plate the roll, finish the scores into cuts making oval, bitesized pieces, and arrange them however you want. A bed of leaf lettuce is a great garnish.

Serve HOT.

Then roll up your tortilla. Score the roll in about one inch pieces at angles, and put that baby on a baking sheet. I use an old toaster oven set of pans (it’s basically a tray and “cooler rack”) so I can get some hot air

The sign, although it has a vintage feel that makes it fit right in with our other lovely street art, was created and installed in November 2009.

How do I get there from our office?

Take a left out the door at our Carson office, walk three (short city) blocks, make a left when you see the Golden Nugget. Stroll delightfully taking in the fresh, crisp, almost spring air all the way down South Casino Center Boulevard, stopping at the corner of Lewis to admire our city’s fine courthouse building. Continue down South Casino Center Boulevard until you see the sign — it’s right in the middle of the road at a RTC shelter.

Neon Museum and Boneyard The Neon Museum preserves and exhibits classic Las Vegas neon signs. The museum’s collection consists of both restored and unrestored signs, mostly housed in the Neon Boneyard in downtown Las Vegas. Many of the restored neon signs, which can be found along the Fremont Street Experience and Las Vegas Boulevard, are also part of the museum’s collection. First Friday

First Friday is celebrated in the Arts District of downtown Las Vegas.

The hub is on Casino Center Boulevard in between Colorado Street & California Street with an extension on Third Street & Colorado Street. First Friday has been extended to include the Fremont East district with live activities and music in Get Back Alley behind Beauty Bar and The Griffin. First Friday celebrates young and established local artists. There are food trucks galore and music on three stages with over 12 live bands. There will be special art installations and live performance paintings. It is all about community coming together to celebrate art. First Friday has a great variety of artists, vendors and activities that are fun and exciting for all ages. They even have a kid’s zone with different themes each month.
