doubletruck: n. An ad or editorial project that covers two facing pages. The term originates from the days when heavy forms for newspaper pages, largely filled with lead type, were rolled around the composing room floor on heavy carts called trucks. Two pages for one project meant a doubletruck. — The Detroit Free Press
P
roud to bring you another blockbuster issue, with 90 days of the world news from every corner of the globe, by the greatest storytellers of our times. No two events in the last three months, were more tragic and incomprehensible than the bombing of the Boston Marathon and the Bangladesh catastrophic building collapse. But, as is often the case, out of humanity’s darkest moments, heroes rose to the challenge. Bringing a city together with a new anthem: ‘Boston Strong.’ Scores of the runners and spectators wore clothes made in the famous garment sweat shops of Greater Dhaka Area. A week later, across the globe, in the capital of Bangladesh, the deadliest garment-factory accident in history occured. The eight-story commercial Rana Plaza collapsed, killing over a thousand and injuring a few thousand more and what will go down as the deadliest accidental structural failure in modern history, too. An outcry from the public to boycot items made in these inhumane conditions began immediately. The ongonig tragedy of Syria also weighed heavily on the world. As the death tolls rises in Syria, the city of Aleppo is becoming a microcosm for the nation’s staggering humanitarian crisis caused by the Civil War. ‘A City Consumed’ by Swedish photojournalist, Niclas Hammarström, tells the dark tale of Aleppo - where once a proud long-standing culture stood, now Allepo, brought to its knees by the ongoing violence, has reached unprecedented levels of horror with the Assad regime and the rebels ‘cooperating to destroy’ their own beloved country. Rounding out this issue, Contributing Editor Stan Sholik - The Technologist - talks about a new product from one of my favorite brands – LEICA. Last but not least: we look at the always important, annual press freedom conference by IPI, this year held in Jordan and highlighted by the presentations of the brave Women Warriors of Press Freedom and the legendary Jim Clancy of CNN.

A City Consumed In the largest city in Syria, two million people live in fear of snipers, grenade attacks, famine, cold, anarchy and the smell of garbage and dead bodies. Between east and west lies Aleppo’s greatest attraction: The Souk. In the Arabic and Muslim world a Souk has always been a colorful market, full of craftsmen and traders. The Souk in Aleppo is much more than that. It’s an architectural jewel. A seven square kilometer market, the largest in the world, with a thirty-one kilometer long network of alleyways running through. All under one roof. The Aleppo Souk is registered as a UNESCO world heritage site. Now it has been taken over by the soldiers. The front line zig-zags like a labyrinth through the Souk. Every corner could be a death trap. On the way there we stop for awhile at a well organized Military Police Headquarter. I have a cup of tea with one of Assad’s Generals, Infantrist Ali Laleh Zak. Zak deserted from the regime last fall and holds an important role in fighting for the rebels. He ponders what Assad will do and where he will go when the rebels have won the war. The Middle East faces a staggering humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict in Syria, an aid agency says. The USbased group describes the level of rape and sexual violence occurring in the conflict as “horrific.” With more than 600,000 Syrians having fled the country, the International Rescue Committee is calling on the outside world to step up its response. The World Food Program (WFP) said it is helping 1.5 million Syrians, but continued fighting and an inability to use the port of Tartus to deliver food means many people are not receiving aid. Syria’s violence has reached unprecedented levels of horror, with the Assad regime and the rebels “co-operating to destroy,” the country, UN special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said to Staffan Heimerson.

Life During Wartime in Allepo by Staffan Heimerson A Sunday morning in Aleppo. Myself and my photographer, Niclas Hammarström, have woken up early in sub-zero temperatures and put on our bullet-proof vests. In a little yellow cab, without any breakfast, or even a cup of tea, we made it to the frontline in Qatiba, close to the city center. If you want to call it a frontline - Aleppo, the city of two million people, has an unmanageable myriad of front lines. The Commander for a group of freedom fighters is sitting in a white plastic chair in front of a bullet-ridden wooden house. His name is Abu Ali Slebi, he is an engineer. On the wall behind him the slogan “Everyone on here is for a free Syria!” is spray-painted in black. Free Syria is the current definition of areas that have been taken over by the Free Syrian Army Rebels. Free Syria corresponds to about half of the populated area of Syria, the other half is controlled by President Bashir Al-Assad. Commander Slebi is chain-smoking Gauloises. We are all tasting the smoke, it eases the continuous stench from the piles of garbage in a city where no civilian life functions normally. The Commanders feet, in new white sneakers, are drumming restlessly against the cobblestones in the street. A series of gunshots are heard from a building 200 meters away from where we are standing. These gunshot are usually fired from automatic weapons like AK-47’s but also from high-powered rifles with scopes for accuracy. The snipers exist on both sides of this war. They make life miserable for both enemies and allies. One side will take cover in one house, and the other side will take cover in an opposite house 100200 meters away Then, they start shooting at each other. That, the commander says, is the worst part of our war. We can not see our enemy, we can only hear him. Every intersection is tough to pass through for this reason, and I see how the people in Aleppo have adapted: They stop before the street corner, hunch over 90 degrees, before running for their lives across the intersection. My bullet-proof vest feels heavy as I lean forward. The thought crosses my mind that I am an idiot for not wearing a helmet. then I run. Oddly enough, I am not afraid, but this is like Russian roulette and I think to myself - I am going to die now. I wonder how it feels? As I reach the other side, I exhale. On another day we follow this “hunt” from near the top of a residential building. The sniper is standing by a window, opened a few inches so he can aim his rifle. He peers through the scope and fires one single round. DT

FROM LEICA WITH LOVE BY

camera is just a tool, right? A body and lens that allows us to create images. Well, it seems that there are tools and then there are TOOLS. And there are cameras and then there are Leicas. It’s not that the images you create with the latest Leica S2 are really that much more extraordinary than those you would create with another top medium format digital back. It is the style and comfort with which you are able to create those images that sets the Leica S2 apart from other cameras. During the one short week I had the S2 and two lenses on loan for review, I showed the body to several other professional photographers. Without exception, each of them remarked how surprised they were that it was so light and felt so comfortable and natural in their hands. And there was wide variation in the sizes of their hands. At just over 3 lbs., the S2 body is perfectly balanced with its lenses, which average just under 3 lbs. Leica seems to have given thought to every as pect of the S2 design. The
front has a deep groove for a firm grip with two fingers, while the back has a perfectly placed angled indent for your thumb. When held this way your index finger falls naturally on the release. Comfortably close to the thumb indent on the rear is a multi-function click wheel for adjusting camera settings and selecting and adjusting menu items. The back of the S2 is minimalist to the extreme, devoid of the array of buttons common on smaller format digital SLRs. The back contains a large (3 inch) monitor surrounded by four menu selection buttons, similar to the digital backs from Phase One. But on the Leica the buttons are black, nearly blending into the body itself. I love the simplicity of this approach both from Leica and Phase One, which allows me to concentrate on photography, not on messing around with embedded camera settings. Also present on the back near your thumb is a button to lock autofocus and exposure. And to the far right on the back is the on/off switch, with additional settings to activate the focal plane shutter in the body or the leaf shutter in the lens. The top plate of the camera contains a single large dial on the right for setting

shutter speed, a small LCD display next to it that holds a brief summary of camera settings, and a hotshoe over the pentaprism. The eyepiece is positively huge and rimmed with rubber, allowing eyeglass wearers like myself to easily see the entire view screen. A diopter adjustment rings the eyepiece, and although it doesn’t have a lock, it stayed on the same setting throughout the time I used the camera. With this minimalist approach, where are the camera settings? The four menu selection buttons surrounding the monitor give you access to them. Pressing the top left button brings up the camera control options, the button below gives access to image control options such as ISO and white balance. The top button on the right selects playback options and the button below gives access to the setup menus. Once you have selected one of the four top options, you rotate the click wheel with your thumb to select an option, then press and release the click wheel to visit the submenus. Once in the submenus, you rotate the click wheel again to select an option, press and release it to select the option, and press the Exit button to return to the top menu. All very quick and natural. There is no lack of controls to be sure, extending even to auto-bracketing, making HDR captures an easy option using the S2. Choosing exposure modes is equally well thought out. The top shutter speed dial has an “A” setting for aperture priority. You adjust the aperture by turning the click wheel. Pressing the click wheel for a second and releasing it moves you from aperture priority mode to program mode, with the S2 in complete control of exposure. Autoexposure is perfect in program mode. How does Leica manage perfect autoexposure in every camera they have ever made? Moving the dial to a shutter speed from 1/4000 to 8 sec places you in shutter priority mode. Depressing and releasing the click wheel with your thumb for a second switches to full manual mode. Rotate the shutter speed dial to select a shutter speed and rotate the click wheel to select
an aperture. In all modes the shutter speed and aperture are displayed in the viewfinder, along with the exposure mode and metering mode and other information appropriate to the functions selected. Again, fairly minimalist, allowing you to concentrate on the image in the viewfinder, undistracted by the information displays around it. The image sensor is a 37.5 megapixel Kodak chip in 3:2 format that produces a 7500 x 5000 pixel image with a 12-bit dynamic range. There is no low pass filter over the sensor to soften the image and guard against moire. Moiré is detected and suppressed in the camera by the digital signal processing. ISO ranges from the native 160 to 1250 in full EVs, plus a Pull 80 ISO with limited dynamic range, and an automatic ISO setting also. From my testing, the ISO 1250 is fully usable with excellent noise reduction performed by the camera. However, shooting at ISO 1250 brought my attention to the one weakness in the S2 body, the rear LCD screen. Images on the screen simply don’t look as good as they will when viewed on your computer monitor. I noticed it first in dark areas when shooting at ISO 1250, where the areas looked almost solarized. Then I started seeing problems at other ISO settings. The monitor needs work in lots of areas. No problems with the final images, however. Image quality is simply superb. Some of this must be credited to the lenses. I photographed with the Leica ElmaritS 30mm f/2.8 ASPH (aspherical) and the APO Macro Summarit-S 120mm f/2.5, both without leaf shutters. Also available for the S2 is a Summarit-S 35mm f/2.8 ASPH, a Summarit-S 70mm f/2.5 ASPH and an APO Elmar-S 180mm f/3.5. Each lens is available with or without a leaf shutter although actual availability for purchase in the US is still far from universal. Other lenses are in development and will likely be announced at Photokina this year. In the studio I used the Macro 120mm for a food shoot and to copy some painting for an artist. There is simply nothing that I can say to find fault with the lens quality or the images it delivered. Distortion, optical aberrations and vignetting don’t seem to
ECHNO exist at any aperture with this lens. However, I was very disappointed that it could only reach a magnification of 1:2, not 1:1 as other medium format 120mm macro lenses can. And I don’t like macro lenses that extend as the magnification rises, even though the Leica did not extend past its quite deep lens hood. At the other end of the distance scale, when focused on infinity, the lens would require 72mm screw in filters as the moving portion retreats back into the outer lens barrel. You would even have trouble adjusting a 72mm screw-in polarizing filter near the infinity position of the lens. Away from the studio, I ended up shooting most of the images on the S2 with the 30mm lens, equivalent to a 24mm on a full frame 35mm camera. There is a slight lowering of contrast and about 1.5 EV of vignetting at the edges of the image at f/2.8, as you would expect to find with a lens this wide angle. But I found no evidence of optical aberrations or color fringing at any aperture, and barrel distortion is barely visible even at closest focus. It is so well balanced on the S2 body that I was consistently able to capture sharp images at 1/30 second. This is definitely one of the must-have lenses if you can afford the Leica S2 system. And therein lies the problem with
the S2, although it is a common problem with all medium format digital cameras and backs. The S2 body lists for $22,995 and I have not seen a street price for less than that figure. The 120mm macro lists for $6,995 and the 30mm for $7,495. The other lenses are in the same range. With battery life running 100-125 exposures, a spare battery costs $229.95. Other accessories are similarly priced. While most of us can only dream of what we could do if we owned a camera system like the Leica S2, I am thankful that I have been able to create a few images with it this last week and experience the pleasure of working with such a competent and well designed piece of camera equipment.
