WINTER 2020 :: Issue FIFTY NINE THIS ISSUE CONTAINS PICTURES MADE BETWEEN :: JANUARY 1 and MARCH 31, 2020 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
doubletruck: n. An ad or editorial project that covers two facing pages. The term originates from the days when heavy forms for newspaper pages, largely filled with lead type, were rolled around the composing room floor on heavy carts called trucks. Two pages for one project meant a doubletruck. — The Detroit Free Press

Thank you Stan for your help and vision. These times have been trying to say the least, we need all the help and love we can get. The year began with a bang, major politico drama, with the third impeachment in USA history of Donald Trump. Like Johnson and Clinton before him, he was acquitted and not removed from office. Meanwhile as we settled in to heal, in China a bigger drama was unfolding. Our world would never be the same! A hero, Dr. LI WENLIANG (born October 12, 1986), noticed a threatening coronavirus in Wuhan, China and shared his concerns with seven colleagues on a online bulletin board. The good young doctor kept fighting to save the growing tsunami of victims. Until he too came down with the deadly virus COVID-19 on February 7, 2020. I dedicate this issue to this valiant young man, who warned us and without a doubt saved scores of lives. Despite knowing the extreme danger, he worked tirelessly to help those he could. A true HERO! Doctor Li and his fellow practitioners, nurses, orderlies and medical staff globally are our ANGELS in this battle versus the devil virus and the unknown. As we marshal in a new era at DT, we are going to up our game on the web and increase our mobile presence, so keep an eye out for new ways to experience and appreciate great visualists and the work they have dedicated their lives to bring us. They have always been FIRST RESPONDERS and on the Front Line of Truth! Thank you for your time and support.

A REAL HERO and THE DEVIL Dr. Li Wenliang vs COVID-19
Dr.Wenliang and Microscopist Elizabeth Fischer BLOWING IN THE WIND: WE REMEMBER: DR. LI WENLIANG! Who is Doctor LI WENLIANG? Whistleblower, courageous young hero, and gone too soon. This Chinese doctor working at Wuhan Central Hospital, and gave the first warning about the deadly coronavirus outbreak. Warning fellow medics on December 30, 2019, the police told him to stop “making false comments”. Dr Li, an ophthalmologist, posted his story on Weibo (China’s Twitter) from a hospital bed a month after sending out his initial warning. Originally the 34 year old had noticed seven cases of a virus that he thought looked like SARS - the virus that led to a global epidemic in 2003. He warned fellow doctors in a chat group to wear protective clothing to avoid infection. Four days later he was summoned to the Public Security Bureau where he was told to sign a letter admitting “making false comments” that had “severely disturbed the social order”. Police said seven others were being investigated for “spreading rumors”. They later apologized to Dr Li. On January10th he started coughing heavily The next day he had a fever and two days later was in a hospital bed that he never left alive. On January 30th Dr. Li was diagnosed with the coronavirus. He died on February 7, 2020. China’s health authorities say: Coronavirus is killing 60-plus year olds or people who suffered from other medical conditions. Dr Li’s medical history is not known. The virus causes severe acute respiratory infection and symptoms usually start with a fever, followed by a dry cough. Most people infected are likely to fully recover - just as they would from a flu. Dr Wenliang would want you to wash your hands, and be extra health conscious, Until the epidemic is controlled, social distance too and wear a mask in public groups! Scott Mc Kiernan, Editor-in-Chief Chinese-Australian political cartoonist Badiucao in Barcelona supporting Free Catalonia movement. Asked why he does his protest street art, Badiucao proclaimed ‘Being an activist is just a side-effect of being an artist’. Badiucao is one of the most outspoken critics of the Chinese government’s restrictions on freedom of expression. The former Shanghai-based law student switched careers to become a visual artist and political cartoonist, eventually emigrating to Australia ten years ago to protect himself and his family. His work is censored in China, and increasingly so in Hong Kong and Australia. Badiucao came to Prague in spring of 2020, to take part in One World, Central Europe’s largest human rights film festival, which ended up disrupted by the Czech Republic’s declaration of special measures due to COVID-19. Badiucao commented on Dr. Li and COVID, ‘Some people said COVID-19 Wuhan pandemic was perhaps China’s ‘Chernobyl moment’. We will see. Meanwhile he has created and produced street art throughout Prague as a homage. Let’s not forget his statement: WHO IS DR. LI WENLIANG? Photo by Libor Sojka/CTK via ZUMA

March 28, 2020 - Prague, Czech Republic - WHO IS DR. LI WENLIANG poster on a building in Prague by Badiucao, the Chinese political cartoonist, artist and rights activist exiled in Australia. Regarded as one of China’s most prolific and well-known political cartoonists, Badiucao told Global Voices why he came to Prague: ‘’I came here to be part of two human rights film festivals, in Geneva and Prague. Geneva got cancelled, and the one in Prague was initially going on. This city means a lot to people in China for those who love freedom and democracy. Václav Havel is an inspiration, so I romanticized it. But I discovered he has been forgotten for a long time, this is a huge shock. But this was being naive, in fact history repeats itself when people forget. I want my art to be a form of recording against the official record of history, to avoid repeating mistakes.’’
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), is one of the 27 institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health, an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Its Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) is where they made these images. These beautifully colored images of the virus that causes COVID-19 are appearing everywhere. These images are “colorized from black-and-white images much like a negative from the old days of film cameras, meaning they are digitally enhanced on a computer. At NIAID, capturing and enhancing these images takes a close collaboration of science and art, giving us these images of the invisible enemy. The Electron Microscopy (EM) Unit provides state-of-the-art technologies to support the ultrastructural imaging needs of NIAID scientists both in the Bethesda, Maryland, area and at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Montana. The result is an ultimate blowup of between 30,000 and 90,000 times their actual size. DOUBLEtruck Magazine would like to applaud those scientists helping tell the novel coronavirus story. One such person is ELIZABETH FISCHER, M.A. , Chief of the RML Microscopy Unit. Thank you Elizabeth and your team for helping us visualize the unseen. DT

rom India to Africa, tea fields to technology, women are the resilient hard-working backbones of their communities. These images showcase the inspirational stories of remarkable women at laboring work in developing countries whose perseverance is often overlooked. Many of these women live in post-conflict or hard-to-reach areas, yet illuminate their shared determination to create better futures for their families through their creativity, ingenuity, and drive. These women from Africa, Asia and Latin America share stories of how they have risen above their circumstances to empower themselves through their tenacity and resiliency. This project also celebrates the individuals and grassroots organizations that are committed to finding creative solutions to the challenges that these women face through all aspects of work in their global communities. These are more than images of women just toiling in the fields in rural areas. On average, women make up just over 40 percent of the global agricultural labor force, yet own less than 20 percent of the land. Many have joined co-ops to learn the skills of building their business from kitchen garden to profitable business. Micro loans and mobile money are taking women to another level. By starting their own businesses women are opening bank accounts and taking control of their own money. In many of these war torn countries, especially the Congo where a women is raped each minute of every day, nearly every woman has suffered some unspeakable atrocity. The numeracy, literacy, and job-training programs offered to these women gives them usable work skills. This offers them not only a sense of financial stability but equally as important it gives them a sense of self worth through like-minded community. Ask any of them why they do these jobs and it’s for the education and betterment of their children.Women in these countries are always somehow going to be the ones to figure it out for their families. By creating awareness of the struggles and successes of these women we can not only help better their circumstances but learn and be inspired by their determination and strength. Empowering women not only benefits their immediate family, it benefits their whole village, their nation, our world. DT

WOMEN AT WORK: GRIT and GRACE
Text by ZUMA
Matagalpa, Nicaragua - GUADALUPE is a coffee farmer in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Coffee is one of the world’s most highly-traded commodities, and since it came to Nicaragua in the mid-1800s, it has played a significant role in the country’s economy and environment. Due to their strained economic conditions, women are more likely to be hired to work on the country’s 40,000 coffee plantations, as they are willing to accept lower wages than men. In Nicaragua, women undertake 70 percent of the work in the industry yet own just 23 percent of the land, facilities, and products.
Dhaka, Bangladesh - Thousands of women like SUJO migrate from rural villages to work in the 5,000 garment factories in the city of Dhakha. Since the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in 2013, managers have been under pressure to create safer conditions for their workers, including fire safety and healthcare. This factory supplies clothing chains like H&M, Zara and Marks & Spencer. Sujo works as a sewing machine operator. She is recently married and her husband also works here.
Granada, Nicaragua - ANGELA is a trash-picker in Granada, Nicaragua. Women who are widowed or abandoned by their husbands and fathers are left with little recourse to care for their families in Nicaragua. These single women and young girls sort through one of the largest garbage dumps in Central America, searching for recycling that will bring them a dollar a day as a means to support their families.

1. September 30, 2012 - Morogoro, Tanzania - HELENA MARODA, Agricultural Co-op farmer. In Tanzania women like Helena have joined co-ops to learn the skills of building their business from kitchen garden to profitable business. Helena works in a Tanzanian cornfield that serves as a demonstration plot to teach others how to grow corn more successfully. Eight other women collectively work the roughly eight acres of land. Increasing women’s access to land, livestock, education, financial services, technology and rural employment will boost their productivity and generate gains in terms of agricultural production, food security and social welfare. Closing the gender gap in agricultural inputs alone could lift 100-150 million people out of hunger. 2. April 24, 2014 - Paynesville, Monrovia, Liberia - Gbongar is a Plastic Goods Vendor. GBONGAR KAMARA received a loan from a microfinance program, run by an NGO called BRAC, which allowed her to start selling plastic goods in the Red Hill market in Monrovia, Liberia. Women here meet in weekly groups to repay their loans, and if one cannot pay back her loan that week, the other women will chip in and help her. Gbongar is proud that her business is doing well. 3. April 25, 2014 - Gbarnga, Liberia - PATIENCE receives her threemonth Depo-Provera contraceptive shot from THERESA GLOLI, a trained midwife and nurse in Liberia.Theresa manages a family planning health clinic that she sets up in the middle of the market in Gbarnga every Friday, knowing that it’s the busiest day of the week for women to shop. In The Moment of Lift, Melinda Gates writes, ‘When women are able to time and space their pregnancies, they’re more likely to advance their education, earn an income, raise healthy children, and have the time and money to give each child the food, care, and education to thrive. In fact, no country in the last fifty years has emerged from poverty without expanding access to contraceptives. Contraceptives are the greatest life-saving, poverty-ending, women-empowering innovation ever created.” 4. April 30, 2014 - Mafinda, Sierra Leone - Agricultural farmers working in a field in Mafinda, Sierra Leone. This swampland is managed by a group of women in Mafinda. Each woman has her own plot of land, but they have learned the power of working together. Each one receives training, seeds, and fertilizers from the international NGO BRAC, and together they grow corn, peppers and tomatoes to sell in the market. In developing countries, 43 percent of agricultural workers are women, but they often lack rights to the land; have limited access to water, fertilizer, seeds, credit, and training; and spend more time on unpaid work than rural men or urban men and women do. It is estimated that if women farmers had access to the same resources as men, there could be 150 million fewer hungry people in the world.

ATU KAMARA is a fruit vendor and makes money village of Port Loko. Seventy percent of women in one dollar a day. Women like Kadatu earn very unstable seasonal trades.
Osatsu, Toba City, Mie Prefecture, Japan - HISAE is an ‘Ama’ (Sea Women) free-diver in Osatsu. It is considered that the Japanese practice of ‘ama’ traditional free-diving has been passed down through female generations for about 2000 years. These women collect seaweed, conch, lobster, abalone and shellfish. They became more in demand with the discovery of the cultured pearl in 1893, giving them the name ‘ama’ pearl divers. In the early morning hours these women, who until recently wore only a loincloth, apply oil and warm themselves by the fire in the warming hut to prepare for a day of diving in frigid waters. The men drive the boats and help haul the catch, but the women are considered to be better divers due to the distribution of their fat and their ability to hold their breath. Most of the women remaining in this job are now well into their 70s and are thought to live longer due to their diving training and disciplines. Hisae Okano, shown here, is 75, and as third-generation divers, these women are probably the last. The younger women in the village don’t want to pursue this profession and have moved to the cities to find more modern occupations.
Yangon, Myanmar - DAW NYUNT NYUNT YEE runs a guitar-building shop in Yangon, thanks to a loan she received for supplies. The air is thick and smells of chemicals as the heavy varnish, paint, and glue are heated over a fire in a room with no ventilation. The room is crowded with about sixteen workers, who can make about 200 guitars a week. The dealer pays about 5 a piece. Nyunt makes just enough support her eight year-old child, a student.
Lamahi, Dang District, Nepal - KAMALA CHAUDHARY, 22, is a female motorcycle mechanic. The Nepal Youth Foundation (NYF) has helped to eradicate the centuries-old practice known as Kamlari, in which Tharu girls are sold into servitude or bonded labor. The foundation gave piglets to families so they could sell them instead of their daughters‚ telling statement as to what a girl is worth in this country. Kamala, worked as a Kamlari for six years and was freed 11 years ago. After automobile training school, got a 0% NYF loan, opened her own automobile mechanics shop.
S. Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo - Women during a cooking class learn how to make Belgian waffles. One woman is raped every minute in the DRC. These atrocious attacks are an ongoing ‘weapon of war’ committed by rebels and even local police and militants. The numeracy, literacy, and job training programs offered by the non-governmental organization (NGO) Women for Women gives these women usable work skills. When asked how they can possibly effuse so much joy after enduring such atrocities, they reply, ‘Its the work‚ it brings us a sense of purpose, community, belonging, and safety.’
Taungoo, Bago District, Myanmar - DAW KHIN NILAR HTUN makes plastic rope in Taungoo Myanmar. She makes about 70 bunches a day, each bunch with ten ropes. Her husband helps by selling rope and clay pots in the market. Nilar works about 7.5 hours a day but has to hire some help as she also cooks, cleans, and takes care of their five children, ages 4 to 24. She received a loan from BRAC and was able to open a small restaurant. She and her husband make about 5 a day.
WOMAN AT WORK Facts and Figures on FEMALE Economic Empowerment Benefits of economic empowerment from the United Nations
• When more women work, economies grow. Women’s economic empowerment boosts productivity, increases economic diversification and income equality in addition to other positive development outcomes. For example, increasing the female employment rates in Organization for Economic Organization and Development (OECD) countries to match that of Sweden, could boost GDP by over USD 6 trillion, recognizing, however, that. growth does not automatically lead to a reduction in gender-based inequality. Conversely, it is estimated that gender gaps cost the economy some 15 percent of GDP. • Increasing women’s and girls’ educational attainment contributes to women’s economic empowerment and more inclusive economic growth. Education, up skilling and re-skilling over the life course - especially to keep pace with rapid technological and digital transformations affecting jobs - are critical for women’s and girls’ health and well-being, as well as their income-generation opportunities and participation in the formal labor market. Increased educational attainment accounts for about 50 per cent of the economic growth in OECD countries over the past 50 years. But, for the majority of women, significant gains in education have not translated into better labor market outcomes. • Women’s economic equality is good for business. Companies greatly benefit from increasing employment and leadership opportunities for women, which is shown to increase organizational effectiveness and growth. It is estimated that companies with three or more women in senior management functions score higher in all dimensions of organizational performance. Woman at Work Worldwide • Women are less likely to be entrepreneurs and face more disadvantages starting businesses: In 40 percent of economies, women’s early stage entrepreneurial activity is half or less than half of that of men’s. • Women are constrained from achieving the highest leadership positions: only 5 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs are women. • Almost a third of women’s employment globally is in agriculture, including forestry and fishing, but this may exclude self-employed and unpaid family workers. Yet, differences across countries and regions are striking. The share of women workers in agriculture is only 9.5 percent in upper-middle-income countries and 2.6 percent in high-income countries, while agriculture remains the most important employment sector for women in low-income and lower-middle-income countries. DT
Bardiya, Dang District, Nepal - The Nepal Youth Foundation has helped to eradicate the centuries-old Kamlari practice where Tharu girls are sold into servitude or bonded labor. These girls are now free, getting educated and working in jobs that give them financial independence and self respect. NIRMALA, an ex-Kamlari, now runs a small farm with pigs, gathering fodder for her animals here in the Dang District of Nepal.

TECHNO I
n an era of hybrid cars, electronics, and even food, Nikon introduces the D780, seemingly a hybrid of the D750 DSLR and the Z 6 mirrorless models. Does it live up to our hopes of it being the best all-around Nikon camera of the modern era? Read on. The Nikon D750, first introduced in 2014, has remained Nikons most popular DSLR for advanced amateurs and many professionals (including myself) since its introduction. Yet after six years and the introduction of the Z 6 mirrorless Nikon, its shortcomings, though few, are becoming apparent. This is particularly true with respect to the increasing popularity of high-resolution video, but the D750’s operating speed and ease of use have fallen behind other Nikon models and those of Nikon’s competitors. With the introduction of the D780, Nikon has addressed these shortcomings, but has created others in the process. This is most apparent by comparing the new camera with the D750 and the Z 6. Moving to the D780 from another Nikon camera should be a comfortable ergonomic experience for most users, but less so for long-time users of the D750. These photographers will find some controls relocated and other missing entirely. However, the new layout is easily manageable. My greatest adjustment was the relocation of the AE-L/AF-L button to a position above the Multi-selector dial, approximately where the D750’s Info button formerly resided. The former position of the AE-L/AF-L button is now occupied by a new AF-ON button, who default operation is to focus in autofocus mode. (As usual, most button can be programmed for other functions.) Beside the new AF-ON button is the relocated Live view selector. The D750 position for this button is now occupied an Info button. The information available is very similar to that of the Z-series cameras, including the touchscreen selection ability of the Z’s. The display it calls up is far better organized than that of the D750 Info button, and It too is now highly programmable.
The top panel in the D780 includes an ISO-selector button, another welcome addition from the Z’s. But there are two functions missing from the D780 that will impact some photographers. The first is the lack of a built-in pop-up flash. While this may not be an issue for professionals, enthusiasts may balk at having to invest in and learn to operate an on-camera flash. Of greater impact to professionals is the inability to attach a vertical (battery) grip to the base of the D780. With the seemingly enormous shooting capacity of the D780 EN-EL-15b battery (Nikon specs 2,260 captures per charge, almost twice that of the D750), I’m actually wondering if I will even need to charge the battery before I return the kit to Nikon. I grant there is no need for two batteries, but the lack of a convenient, comfortable way to control the camera in a vertical position will be missed by many professionals, myself included. This could have been minimized by including a focus-selector joystick on the back such as found on the Z’s, but the D780 unfortunately lacks this also. The greatest and most important changes to the D780 are found inside. Although the 24.5-megapixel count is virtually identical to that of the D750, the sensor is not. It is upgraded to what seems like the sensor found in the Z 6, incorporating all of the latest sensor technology, including an ISO range extended to ISO 51,200, and expandable to 204,800 (for the police, CIA, and spies everywhere). As with the Z 6, I found image quality more than acceptable to 12,800 when processed in Nikon ND-X software before falling to a level that I would not feel comfortable delivering to a client. Even at low ISO speeds, there

is a noticeable improvement in image sharpness using the D780 vs the D750. Included with the new sensor is Nikons most advanced EXPEED 6 image processor as found in the Z 6 and Z 7. The speed increase eliminates my greatest complaint about the D750—the delay between raw file capture and viewing the preview on the LCD. While it is not as instantaneous as with the Z 6, it is greatly improved over the D750. For video shooters, the new sensor and processor deliver the best video capabilities of any Nikon DSLR, rivaling those of the Z 6. Full frame 4K UHD video is possible at 30 fps with full-pixel readout. A variety of other frame rates and resolutions is also available, including full HD at 120p for ultra-smooth video and slow-motion capture. While sports photographers may not make the D780 their primary camera, shooting speed is increased from the 6.5 fps of the D750 to 7 fps. This is extended to 12 fps capturing 12-bit raw files using the silent electronic shutter in Live View. The ability to shoot silently drew me to the Z 6 for the classical music concerts I shoot. It’s exciting to see this in the D780 with its tremendous battery life and the ability to mount Nikkors without an FTZ adapter. Silent mode is also perfect for weddings, quiet events, and street photography, although the D780 with a 24-70 is hardly as unobtrusive as the Z 6 with its 24-70 S lens. Speaking of silent mode and Live View, portrait and fashion photographers should welcome the 273 focus points covering 90% of the LCD and providing face and human eye detection. This includes the on-sensor phase detection focusing lifted from the Z series cameras. The D780 live view AF system can focus down to –4EV (a full EV lower

than the viewfinder AF system) or –6EV in the slower ‘low light AF’ mode accessible through a custom setting. The rear LCD itself is a major advance over at of the D750. It is now touch sensitive with twice the resolution of that in the D750. But like most Nikons, articulation is limited to up and down when held horizontally. The touchscreen provides the ability to access and select options from menus, and to zoom captures and swipe between then in playback. In Live View mode you can tap the screen to select a focus point and capture an image as you can with the Z cameras. The D780 provides two memory card slots. These support SD, SDHC, and SDHX cards and both USH-I and UHS-II types. I purchased a Lexar 2000X UHS-II to test against my Lexar 400X UHS-I from the D750 and the speed gain is noticeable. The faster cards are recommended to make full use of the enhanced video capabilities of the D780. The Lexar UHS-II included a card reader that I discovered was nearly twice as fast in moving images to my computer hard drive that my existing card reader. There are other updates and goodies found in the D780. Time lapse capture is improved by allowing you to store raw files into a separate folder for later processing while generating a preview movie in-camera. Focus stacking from the D850 is available, allowing the D780 to stack up to 300 captures for later processing. Shutter speeds now extend to 1/8000 second and down to 900 seconds (when the appropriate Custom Setting is activated). Special effects are available and you can preview them in Live View. In six of the ten, the D780 captures a raw file along with the special effect. Both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are available through Nikon’s SnapBridge or third-party applications to allow you to wirelessly control or transfer images to smart devices or your computer.
CHNOL I’m sure there are other features in the D780 that I have yet to discover. The manual included with the camera is pretty much useless for anything but basic operating information. Fortunately, the D780 Reference Manual is a free download from nikonusa.com and is an essential tool to get the most from the camera. Is the D780 right for you? For me, the hybrid qualities of the D780 may relegate my Z 6 to backup camera status for much of my work, although for general shooting the Z 6 with its growing array of lenses is great. Interestingly, I found the D780 with 24-120mm lens to be the same size and weight as the Z 6, FTZ adapter, and the identical lens. Other features on the cameras will determine which is primary and which is backup when 24-megapixel captures are sufficient. The D780 represents a major step forward in Nikon’s DSLR line and its hybrid nature is likely to appeal to both professionals and enthusiasts, as will its price of $2297 for the body alone. DT

Park Jongwoo: DMZ by Park Jongwoo

Book Review by Stan Sholik
f there were ever a phrase that is the antithesis of its meaning, the “demilitarized zone” on the Korean peninsula would be the prime example. This is made abundantly clear in a new book by Jongwoo Park, “Park Jongwoo: DMZ”, published by Steidl in Germany. Jongwoo Park is a Korean native, born in Seoul in 1958. From 1983 to 1995, he worked for The Korea Times, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times as a photojournalist. Since working on his own, he has photographed
With each side scrambling to seize and fortify high points along the Military Demarcation Line, the original DMZ became a 4-kilometer dead zone along its entire 248-kilometer length. Prior to the photographic documentation by Mr. Park, there had never been a photographic record of the DMZ, neither military nor civilian. The DMZ was established in 1953 at the conclusion of the Korean Armistice Agreement. In its original concept, the DMZ was created as a 4-kilometer buffer between North and South, to be patrolled by a limited number of local police from both sides. This never came to pass. Instead, military personnel were designated as “local police”, and fortifications were built on both sides. At that point, the DMZ became the most militarized area in the world.
tember 2009 to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean conflict, the assignment was to create a photographic record of the DMZ. For an assignment so simple to state, the requirements to complete it were immensely complicated. As Mr. Park writes, “To start with, every time I wanted to enter the DMZ I had to obtain permission from the authorities, namely the Military Armistice Commission of the UN Command, the Ministry of National Defence, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, South Korea’s Army Headquarters, and all the local army divisions; each visit was planned months in continued on 238
