SITE ANALYSIS

38TH STREET

The University has classified both 38th & Spruce Streets as major Urban Arterial streets. The major pedestrian circulation paths are Woodland Walk, Locust Walk, and 36th Street. Extension and connection to these paths were major influences for this project, as they are considered critical elements to the campus core. 36TH STREET

REDEFINING BUILDING FORM & OUTDOOR SPACES

The site is located at 38th & Spruce Street. It is approximately 63,000 square feet. It takes on a unique triangular shape from the diagonal created by Woodland Walk to the South, and continues running both southwest and northeast of the site. The adjacent Quadrangle building is about four stories in height.

By modifying the volume, the relationship between the adjacent Quadrangle and Woodland Walk enhances the number of outdoor spaces for informal and social meeting spaces.

CREATION OF PRIVATE & PUBLIC SPACES

BUILDING FORM

The volume is further modified to create additional outdoor spaces that provides a boundary / sense of privacy for the residents. The open spaces provide opportunities for engagement and interaction, while promoting the idea of community.

The shaped volume gives the building an identity and sculptural expression, while enhancing it’s relationship with the campus and surrounding community.
