1 OVERVIEW: LANCASTER COUNTY IS AN AGRICULTURAL BASED AREA LOCATED IN THE SOUTH CENTRAL, SUSQUEHANNA REGION OF PENNSYLVANIA. IT IS KNOWN FOR ITS CORNFIELDS, AMISH COMMUNITIES AND HISTORIC BUILDINGS. IT ATTRACTS THOUSANDS OF TOURISTS ANNUALLY TO THE TOURIST DISTRICTS SUCH AS INTERCOURSE, BLUE BALL, AND BIRD-IN-HAND. LANCASTER CITY IS ONE OF THE LARGEST INLAND CITIES IN THE UNITED STATES. IT COVERS AN AREA OF 7.4 SQUARE MILES AND IS POPULATED WITH 59,322 RESIDENTS.

TRANSPORTATION HUB

GOALS: BRINGING NEW LIFE TO THE STEHLI SILK MILL WILL REVIVE THE ROSSMERE COMMUNITY. EDUCATING THE NEIGHBORING COMMUNITY AND RESIDENTS OF LANCASTER CITY IN URBAN FARMING WILL HELP TO INCREASE THE USE OF LOCAL RESOURCES AND IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE. LIVE / WORK OPPORTUNITIES WILL BRING NEW RESIDENTS TO THE AREA INCREASING ITS REVENUE. SOLUTION: RE-USE OF STEHLI SILK MILL AS MULTI-USE AND VERTICAL FARM WILL PROVIDE EDUCATION / SURVIVAL KNOWLEDGE TO THE COMMUNITY THAT CURRENTLY DO NOT HAVE ANY FOUNDATION TO GO ON. MECHANICALLY ROTATING THE PLANTING LEVELS OF A VERTICAL FARM WILL INCREASE THE PLANTING CAPACITY AS WELL AS EXPOSING ALL VEGETATION TO DIRECT AND NATURAL STEHLI SILK MILL GROWING ELEMENTS. WITH THE MILL BEING AT THE ~ 1929 ~ CENTER OF LANCASTER’S TRANSPORTATION HUB, IT INCREASES TO POTENTIALLY FOR TRAFFIC TO AND FROM THE ENHANCED DEVELOPMENT.

LANCASTER CITY IS THE MAJOR TRANSPORTATION HUB FOR ALL MAJOR TRANSPORTATION ROUTES (N,S,E,W) FOR THE SURROUNDING AREA.

SITE HISTORY: STEHLI SILK MILL, ROSSMERE: THE STEHLI SILK MILL IS THE OLDEST SILK MILL IN THE UNITED STATES AND THE SECOND LARGEST IN THE WORLD. IT WAS BUILT IN 1897 AND PROVIDED 2,100 JOBS TO THE BLUE-COLLAR COMMUNITY. THE WORKFORCE WAS TOO OVERWHELMING FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD AT THE TIME THAT A NEW LOCAL COMMUNITY WAS FORMED (ROSSMERE) TO HOUSE THE SILK MILL WORKERS. THE SILK PRODUCTION DOORS SPUN THE LAST FIBER AND LOCKED UP SHOP IN 1975. WITH THE ROSSMERE COMMUNITY BEING HEAVILY UNEMPLOYED, THE HOUSES SOON BEGAN EMPTYING WITH NO TENANTS WITHIN THE NEAR FUTURE. FAMILIES WERE FORCED TO RELOCATE IN SEARCH FOR SOME SORT OF NEW INCOME.

11 STRUCTURAL / MECHANICAL / SUSTAINABILITY

NATURAL VENTILATION DESIGN CREATES COMFORTABLE, HEALTHY INTERIORS BY BRINGING FRESH AIR INTO A BUILDING. THIS ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRACTICE MINIMIZES RELIANCE ON FOSSIL FUEL-BASED MECHANICAL SYSTEMS FOR CLIMATE CONTROL AND LOWERS BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATING COSTS TO CREATE A MORE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. JALOUSIE-STYLE WINDOW VENTILATORS ARE ELECTRICALLY ACTUATED LOUVERED WINDOWS THAT ARE USED FOR NATURAL VENTILATION OR PASSIVE SMOKE VENTILATION. THE PRODUCT INSTALLS EASILY IN THE FACADE OF A BUILDING AND IS OFFERED WITH GLAZED OR INSULATED ALUMINUM PANELS THAT COMPLEMENT ANY ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. CONTROL OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR AUTOMATED CLIMATE CONTROL AND PASSIVE SMOKE CONTROL.

TIMOTHY GOOD THESIS 2016-2017

TECHNICAL REVIEW COMMENTS: -

THE NATURAL VENTILATION DESIGN CURRENTLY WAS NOT FUNCTIONAL AS IS.

-

RE-DESIGN THE MECHANICAL UNITS TO FUNCTION FOR THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT / ORGANIC FARMING INDEPENDANTLY.

-

ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE OF THE RESIDENTIAL ENTRANCE VIA GARAGE SPACE.
