THE CALLOWHILL RECREATION CENTER

SITE DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS THE SITE THAT I SELECTED FOR MY PROJECT IS AT 13TH AND CALLOWHILL STREET IN PHILADELPHIA. THE OTHER STREETS THAT SURROUND THE BLOCK ARE NOBLE STREET AND 12TH STREET. IT IS CURRENTLY A LARGE DESOLATE PARKING LOT. IT IS RELATIVELY FLAT, BUT HAS AN 8' GRADE CHANGE FROM EAST TO WEST. THE RAIL PARK RUNS ACROSS THIS SITE AND CREATES THE NORTH EDGE. THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT, INCLUDING THE RAIL PARK, CONSIST OF HEAVY MASONRY MATERIALS.
PROGRAM ABSTRACT THIS FACILITY WILL SERVE AS A RECREATION AND COMMUNITY CENTER THAT WILL BE BEACON FOR THE CALLOWHILL COMMUNITY. THE INTENT IS TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGE GROUPS AND BACKGROUNDS TO GATHER AND PARTICIPATE IN THEIR FAVORITE ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES AT A LOCAL VENUE. IT WILL HAVE SPACES FOR BOTH RECREATIONAL USE AND COMPETITION. THERE WILL BE BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, SQUASH, AND AN OLYMPIC SIZE SWIMMING POOL. THERE WILL BE MULTI-PURPOSE SPACES LIKE A GYMNASIUM AND OUTDOOR TURF FIELD AS WELL THE BLOCK IS DESIGNATED AS COMMERCIAL MIXED-USE 3. ACCORDING TO THE ZONING CODE, THE BUILDING REQUIRES 4 MEANS OF EGRESS.
CASE STUDIES THE NOVOGRATZ CENTER FOR ATHLETICS INSPIRED ME THROUGH ITS PROGRAMMATIC LAYOUT. CIRCULATION AND CORE ELEMENTS WERE KEPT SEPARATE FROM THE PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF THE BUILDING. I WAS ALSO INTRIGUED BY HOW THE GYMNASIUM WAS STACKED ABOVE THE SQUASH COURTS.
THE DASKALASKIS ATHLETIC CENTER ALSO STACKED THE GYMNASIUM OVER THE SQUASH COURTS. IT ALSO HAS TWO ENTRY WAYS. ONE IS ON THE SOUTH SIDE FOR GENERAL ADMISSION AND NEW MEMBERS WHILE THE OTHER IS ONE THE NORTH EDGE FOR MEMBERS (PRIMARILY STUDENTS).

REFLECTIONS ONE OF THE MAINE CRITIQUES THAT MY JURORS AGREED ON IS THE LACK OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE INTERIOR EXPERIENCE IN RELATION TO THE PRIMARY CIRCULATION. SOME SUGGESTIONS WERE TO USE A COLOR PALETTE OR MATERIAL PALETTE ON THE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS AS SUBTLE WAY-FINDING ASPECTS TO GUIDE OCCUPANTS THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. I AGREE WITH THIS. THAT WOULD ADD ANOTHER LAYER OF INTENT TO THE DESIGN. I WAS VERY RIGOROUS ON EXTERIOR SKIN AND THE APPROACH TO THE BUILDING. THAT SAME RIGOR WOULD HAVE MADE THE INTERIOR MUCH MORE COMPLETE. I EXPECTED THIS PROJECT TO GENERATE A FUN, LIVELY, AND ENGAGING EXPERIENCE FOR VIEWERS/OCCUPANTS. I BELIEVE THAT I WAS SUCCESSFUL SINCE THE JURORS FELT THOSE EXACT NOTIONS FROM THE IMAGES AND MY PRESENTATION.
