RENEWING THE A.C. BOARDWALK
WHAT I WANT TO EXPLORE, IS WHAT HAPPENS TO THE LIFE OF THE BOARDWALK NOW THAT THE CASINO’S ARE DIEING OUT AND THE CITY IS FALLING ONCE AGAIN INTO A STATE OF DECAY AND DISREPAIR? THE BOARDWALK WAS ONCE BOOMING WITH LIFE AND ACTIVITY, HOW CAN THAT STATE BE RENEWED? THE BOARDWALK IS THE CITY’S CULTURAL IDENTITY AND BIGGEST CULTURAL LANDMARK AS WELL. THE LIFE OF THE BOARDWALK NEEDS TO BE RENEWED, NOT WIPED CLEAN, CREATING THAT ALLURE OF ESCAPE FROM THE HARSH REALITIES OF DAILY LIFE MAY BE JUST WHAT THE CITY NEEDS. WITH THESE FACTORS IN MIND, ISSUES OF THE CLIMATE AND CHANGE AND A MORE RELIABLE INFRASTRUCTURE COME TO MIND AS WELL, TO MAKE A PLACE THAT IS NOT ONLY AN ESCAPE, BUT ALSO SUSTAINABLE FROM A LIFETIME STAND POINT. THE BOARDWALK IN ITS CURRENT STATE CAN BE WIPED CLEAN FROM A TROPICAL STORM AND NEEDS TO BE A RELIABLE STRUCTURE. I BELIEVE THE ANSWER LIES IN EXAMINING THE HISTORY OF THE BOARDWALK TYPOLOGY AND CREATING A NEW SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE THAT SETS UP A FRAMEWORK FOR THE BOARDWALK’S FUTURE GROWTH.
AC TIMELINE
DEVELOPED AS A RESORT TOWN - SERVED PRIMARILY THROUGH A TRANSIT LINK IN PHILADELPHIA
1870
WENT THROUGH RADICAL BUILDING BOOM, WITH RESORT HOTELS POPPING UP ALL ALONG THE BOARDWALK. SEEN AS THE GOLDEN AGE OF ATLANTIC CITY
FIRST BOARDWALK WAS BUILT PRIMARILY AS A WAY TO KEEP SAND OUT OF HOTEL LOBBIES BOARDWALK USED TO BE CONSTRUCTED AND REMOVED AS A SEASONAL FIXTURE
1854
1930
1976 ATLANTIC CITY FELL IS DECLINE POST WII
WHAT NOW?
GAMBLING WAS LEGALIZED IN ANA TTEMPT TO REVITALIZE CITY LIFE. -SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE ATLANTIC CITY HAD MONOPOLY ON THE GAMBLING SCENE ALONG THE COAST
NIGHT LIFE AND CLUBS DOMINATED MUCH OF THE BOARDWALK ACITIVITY
1920
GAMBLING MONOPOLY HAS BEEN BROKEN, CLOSING DOWN MANY RESORTS AND CAUSING PANIC. -CITY LEFT WITH QUESTION OF HOW TO REVITALIZE

PRECEDENTS THE OSLO OPERA HOUSE WAS A BIG INFLUENCE ON HOW MY PROJECT MET THE WATERS EDGE. IT TAKES PEDESTRIANS THROUGH THE PROGRAM, BUT ALSO MAKES AN EXPERIENCE OF GRADUALLY SLOPING DOWN TO THE WATER AND ALLOWING PEOPLE TO EXPLORE THE URBAN LANDSCAPE EDGE.
OSLO OPERA HOUSE
THE BIG U IS A PROJECT IN MANHATTAN THAT FOCUSES ON HARDENING THE CITY’S EDGE THROUGH A SERIES OF PUBLIC SPACES THAT BECOME BARRIERS TO INCLEMENT WEATHER AND FLOODING. THE MAIN POINT OF THIS PROJECT WAS THAT SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE CAN ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIFE, NOT TAKE AWAY FROM IT.

THIS COMPETITION ENTRY PROJECT WAS A PROPOSAL FOR THE NAVY PIER ON THE CHICAGO WATER FRONT. THE DESIGN DID NOT WIN THE COMPETITION, BUT WHAT I APPRECIATED ABOUT IT WAS THE WAY IT GREETED THE WATERS EDGE WHILE CREATING A HABITABLE URBAN LANDSCAPE FOR THE PEDESTRIANS USING IT.

WALL SECTION THE PERFORMANCE VENUE BUILDING HAS A NUMBER OF FUNCTIONS INTENDED TO BE FULLFILLED. EACH LEVEL HAS A DEDICATED AREA FOR PERFORMANCES IN A VARIETY OF SCALES AND FORMALITY. THE STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING IS A SYSTEM OF CONCRETE WAFFLE SLAB WITH ACOUSTIC PROPERTIES, WORKING IN TANDEM WITH A NUMBER OF PASSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES. THESE PASSIVE STRATEGIES TIE IN TO THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE OF THE BUILDING, WHILE ALLOWING IT OPEN TO THE EXTERIOR AND OVERLOOK THE DUNES PERFORMANCE SPACE. THE INTENT IS TO ALLOW A VARIETY OF PERFORMANCE SPACES THAT ALSO HAVE THE ABILITY TO CONNECT TO THE EXTERIOR AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LOCATION ON THE WATER. EVEN THE BOTTOM OF THE BUILDING IS USED TO CREATE A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE OF TOUCHING DOWN TO THE WATER AT A MORE INTIMATE SCALE. THE BUILDING CELEBRATES PERFORMANCE ARTS WHILE AUGMENTING IT WITH PASSIVE STRATEGIES THAT ONLY ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE.

THESIS REFLECTION: REFLECTING ON MY PROJECT AFTER THE FINAL REVIEW, I’M PLEASED WITH THE SOLUTION I WAS ABLE TO COME TO. A LOT OF THE FEEDBACK FROM THE JURORS DEALT MORE WITH ISSUES OF SMALL DETAILS AND HOW THE PIER AND MASTER PLAN COULD BE DEVELOPED EVEN FURTHER. THEY APPLAUDED THE SCALE OF THE PROJECT THAT I TOOK ON AND THE SOLUTION I WAS ABLE TO ARRIVE AT, BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO SET UP A FLEXIBLE FRAMEWORK FOR FUTURE GROWTH OF THE BOARD. WHILE ALSO TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE LIFE AND IMPACT ON THE CITY AS A WHOLE. REACHING THIS POINT AT THE END OF MY THESIS YEAR HAS ONLY CONFIRMED WHY I DECIDED TO PURSUE A CAREER IN ARCHITECTURE, I ENJOY EXAMINING THE TYPOLOGY OF SPACES AND LEARN FROM THE PAST. INTEGRATING NEWER FORMS OF TECHNOLOGY IN A WAY THAT HARKEN BACK TO SIMPLE LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE. IN THE END MY GOAL IS TO SHAPE SPACES THAT INSPIRE PEOPLE AND ENHANCE THE AREAS AROUND THEM. I BELIEVE ME THESIS PROJECT WAS A THOUGHTFUL TAKE ON THIS MISSION AND I CAN ONLY CONTINUE TO GROW FROM HERE.
