CASE STUDY MARYLAND HEIGHTS COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTER- MISSOURI ●
DESIGNED BY CANNONDESIGN
●
91800 SQ. FT.
●
THE CENTER WAS DESIGNED TO BE A LOCATION WHERE THE RESIDENCE COULD COME AND ENJOY LOCAL SPORTS AND ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES.
●
IT IS LOCATED NEAR AN EXISTING OUTDOOR WATER PARK THAT IS ALSO OPERATED BY MARYLAND HEIGHTS.
●
THE SITE IS NEAR A BUSY HIGHWAY THAT CREATED A HARSH ENVIRONMENT.
●
TO FIX THE HIGHWAY NOISE ISSUES, THE DESIGNERS LIFTED THE GROUND PLANE AND TUCKED THE BUILDING IN TO THE LANDSCAPE TO HIDE THE THE HIGHWAY.

SWAN LAKE BRIDGE HOUSE AND VIEWING TOWER / TAO- CHINA ●
DESIGNED BY TRACE ARCHITECTURE OFFICE
●
LOCATED IN WEIHAI, CHINA
●
CONSTRUCTED ON A NATURAL WETLAND THIS PUBLIC BUILDING IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A VIEW FOR THE USERS WHILE ALSO HAVING A RELATIVELY SMALL IMPACT ON THE SITE. BOTH OF THESE ASPECTS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO MY BUILDING BEING THAT I AM ON A WETLAND SITE
●
AND ALSO THAT I WANT MY USERS TO BE ABLE TO HAVE A 360 DEGREES VIEW FROM THE TOP DECK. I WOULD LIKE TO PROMOTE ECO FRIENDLY APPROACHES TO WETLANDS WHILE CREATING VIEWS INTO

SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES LAVEZZORIO COMMUNITY CENTER- CHICAGO ●
DESIGNED BY THE STUDIO GANG
●
LOCATED IN CHICAGO
●
IT IS A SMALLER PROGRAM THEN MY BUILDING BUT THE LAYOUT WITH THE DAYCARE ON THE LOWER LEVEL AND THE EXTRA WIDE STAIRS THE DOUBLE AS A CLASS ROOM REALLY INTEREST ME.
●
THE DAYCARE ON THE LOWER LEVEL TO LET THE MOST POSSIBLE NATURAL LIGHT IN TO THE SPACE WHERE THE CHILDREN LEARN AND PLAY.

COMMUNITY CENTER GOALS ●
Provide the current residents of Camden with the same views and architecture as the new buildings being proposed.
●
Use materials that would make the current and new residents feel as if they were in an inviting and
familiar
environment.
In
park
like
atmosphere with a large pavilion at the center. ●
Provide a building and site that the residents could be proud to call their own.
BUILDING GOALS ●
Place where community leaders could utilize while working with the community.
●
Would provide a tech center, indoor/outdoor sports courts/fields, classrooms, events areas, fitness facilities, daycare , and boating classes.
●
Local businesses and local colleges could inform and teach the residences the skills needed by the local business while also
providing
internships
and
other
employment
opportunities to the local population. ●
This would allow the new and old community to grow together as one. BRIAN McKERNAN

FEEDBACK OBSERVATIONS -iT WAS SUGGESTED THAT I MISSED AN OPPORTUNITY TO REACH OUT INTO THE WATER MORE WITH MY STRUCTURE. -I AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT AND IT WAS AN ELEMENT I STARTED WITH BUT ULTIMATELY REMOVED -SOME ITEMS SUCH AS THE LOCATIONS OF STRUCTURAL COLUMNS AND WINDOW LOCATIONS COULD HAVE BE WORKED OUT WITH MORE TIME. -i AGREE WITH THIS ALSO, AS ITEMS WERE CHANGED TOWARDS THE END OF THE TERM I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO FIX EVERYTHING MY ORIGINAL THOUGHTS WERE DIVERTED AFTER STUDYING THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY.
