DREXEL UNIVERSITY

ARCHITECTURAL THESIS 2020

ANDREW K. STEIN ADVISOR: ROBERT NALLS

BACKGROUND INITIAL QUESTIONS: 1. How can architecture be employed to improve mobility and foster community? 2. How can public architecture improve the daily lives of citizens?

PROJECT NARRATIVE: Located in historic Newburgh, on the banks of the Hudson River, is a multi-modal transit and community awareness center that is focused on improving the daily lives of the local residents through increased mobility and creating a public destination. The facility is focused on bridging the divides between old and new, river and city, rich and poor - spurring future development without displacement - to bring Newburgh back into prosperity without leaving those who call it home behind.

Key transportation corridors are preserved, covered now by a park-like structure above. Similar to the Olympic Sculpture Park, the experience of this newly created path the river becomes integral to the building

The current experience of the river is deprived from the main area of the city. In efforts similar to the Oslo Opera House, the building engages with and extends beyond the rivers edge, creating a forced interaction between a visitor and the river.
