This study helped to inform me of the use of overhangs to naturally provide shading. The useable green roof design helped in creating a green roof on the Fishtown Community & Cultural Center.

The building’s copper skin allows the architect to create texture and give the building a distinct color. Copper allows for a more flexible exterior façade and has excellent thermal ratings. The skin wraps around window openings in a much looser form than typical rectangular curtain windows.

How do people move around the building? Are you going to connect to Sugar House Casino? -Penn Treaty Parks pathways do not relate to your building. Are you going to modify these?

The neighborhood of Fishtown dates back to the beginning of Philadelphia. This area was once controlled and settled by the Lenape Indians. When William Penn arrived in 1682 to take control of the land that King Charles II gave him, he established a peace treaty with the Lenape Indians. This treaty was signed under an Elm Tree once located at Penn Treaty Park. Fishtown is a neighborhood located in the area of Phladelphia. The neighborhood forms a triangle shape, with its boundaries being the Delaware River, Frankford Avenue, and York Street. It is located within the Bridesburg, Kensington, and Richmond area of Philadelphia. This area became well known for its shad fishing industry along the Delaware River. The importance of its shad industry and fishery heritage led to the origin of it’s name Fishtown. The shad fishing industry came to an end in the early 1900s, when fishing became extinct. Many fisherman switched their careers to the shipbuilding industry or invested into local real estate. The fishing heritage still plays a huge part in the areas community, with relics and buildings that date back to the original industry. The area has been continually evolving over time. Major development has been occurring around the neighborhood. The most recent project has been the construction of Sugar House Casino. This development along with the construction of I-95 expressway have been linked to have a negative impact on the area. Local residents believe that the addition of the casino will worsen the already established drug and crime problem. Fishtown has recently worked out an agreement with Sugar House Casino to help fund local neighborhood needed improvements. Many residents that live in Fishtown have families that date back five to six generations. Fishtown has began to establish itself as a harbor of artistic, cultural, culinary, and musical destination. This movement has began to attract younger and motivated professionals to the area seeking out more affordable options for business than Center City, Philadelphia. The area is made up of Polish, German, Italian and Irish immigrants. Fishtown is located just minutes away from Temple University and the area of downtown Philadelphia.
