GOLF ETIQUETTE Thank you for your support of the Golf Etiquette drive. Sadly since 5th October, more than 100 members have breached one of the five etiquette pillars (pitch mark repairing, bunker raking, divot filling, cart etiquette and pace of play) and received a formal warning and three members have breached a second time and received a one week suspension. Please remember during the winter period the greens and fairways, being Bermuda, do not grow as readily in the cooler climates so it is even more essential to fill divots and REPAIR ALL PITCH MARKS!

TEAMWORK As we complete another challenging year, I wanted to congratulate the colleagues here at EGC for dilligently adhering to the The Dubai Golf culture, which is is founded on 5 key values - Passion, Customer Focus, Teamwork, Innovation and integrity.

The team has worked extremely hard this year to maximize the experience for our members and guests and were challenged once more on the final day of 2021 with 1280 guests expected for our NYE Gala Dinner on the lawn. All colleagues across the club pulled together in challenging conditions to deliver a memorable end to the year despite the torrential midday rain. A big thank you from me to the 365 colleagues across EGC and thank you the membership for your support of the club and the EGC team. EGC event lawn (12:53, 6 hours before doors opened)

ABDULFATTAH SHARAF EMIRATES GOLF CLUB CAPTAIN

I

Dear Members, hope that this edition finds you all well rested and ready to get going in 2022. Since we last spoke, I have been to visit Dubai EXPO2020 several times. If you have not been yet, please make sure that you find the time to do so. I have been fortunate to spend time there as a

resident, father, banker, dinner guest and concert attendee. The set-up is simply fantastic and is a truly new dimension to the Dubai experience. I have been honoured to have engaged with the EGC in a different way as Club Captain. As an Emirati in the year of the Nation’s 50th, I am now even more conscious of the responsibility for the experience of others, more than that of my own. I feel very lucky to be part of this network bringing golf to our members and the community at large. The Majlis Course and Topgolf turning 1 have been real highlights in recent months. Thank you to you all for your continued engagement and support. I look forward to seeing many of you on the greens.

Even in these complicated times, I hold a lot of hope for 2022, especially with the momentum in the country and the great turnout the 4th quarter showed us at the EGC. January offers an exciting calendar with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, and the Dubai Desert Classic to look forward to. We also hope to have a date confirmed for Captain’s Day shortly.

I

Dear Members, hope all of you had a Merry Christmas and I wish all a Happy & Prosperous New Year. We have certainly seen some highs and lows in 2021 and the pandemic seems like a never-ending series of new variants cropping up every few months.

However, we have managed to get through on a positive note and the ladies Christmas Scramble was a success and I would like to congratulate all the winners who turned in some fantastic scores. We shall be starting our ladies tournament on 4th of January with the Captain v Vice Captain tournament which will be a pairs better ball. Thank you to Anvita Kapoor from Midco for sponsoring the beers for the colleagues and the Members and Colleagues tournament - which is another highlight of the year. The New Year was celebrated in style at the club and apparently sold out despite the heavy rains and the courses being flooded. Once again, I thank all the members for their support throughout 2021 and look forward to very much the same in 2022. I pray that we all keep well and safe and wish everyone all the very best!

L AD Y

Thanks to all of you for creating a vibrant Christmas ambiance and festive spirit with all the costumes which seem to be getting more creative and fun. I trust all you had a lovely day & it was a great way to end the year! We also managed to collect a good sum from the raffle tickets both during the Ladies and Mixed Christmas scramble, which had an amazing turnout. I would like to congratulate all the winners who posted some super scores!

SCHOOL OF RULES

A

Dear Members, s our EGC club matchplay championships are back underway, I thought it would be good to focus this month’s article on the same!

Under the R&A Rules of Golf, we can look to Rule 3 ‘The Competition’, under which we find Matchplay (Rule 3.2). There are some important elements to this rule which players often forget, or are quite unclear on, during their actual matches. Some of the most useful points are as follows:

• If the declared handicap is too low, there is no penalty and you must play off the lower handicap. - Handicap strokes are given by hole, and the lower net score wins the hole. - If a tied match is extended, handicap strokes are given by hole in the same way as in the round. - Each player is responsible for knowing the holes where they give or get handicap strokes. - If the players mistakenly apply handicap strokes on a hole, the agreed result of the hole stands, unless the players correct that mistake in time.

Rule 3.2d – Responsibilities of Player and Opponent

I do encourage you to spend a little time to go through this extensive and comprehensive rule in full – it will arm you with some very valuable knowledge which can be used in the proper way in matchplay tournaments. As always, it is the spirit of the game of golf that should prevail! Rule 3.2a - Result of Hole and Match In match play the result of the hole or match is decided as follows: • You win a hole when you complete the hole in fewer strokes than your opponent, your opponent concedes the hole, or your opponent gets the general penalty (loss of hole). • If your match is tied after the final hole and you need to establish a winner, the match is extended one hole at a time until there is a winner.

Rule 3.2b – Concessions • You may concede your opponent’s next stroke, a hole, or the match, but a concession is only made when it is clearly communicated. This can be either verbal or by action. After a concession, the ball may be removed by anyone. • A concession is final - you cannot withdraw it once made and your opponent cannot decline the concession. *The only exception to this can occur when the concession may have been made based on misinformation. In this circumstance it can be possible to rectify the ‘mistake’.

Rule 3.2c – Applying Handicaps in Handicap Match You and your opponent should tell each other your handicaps before the match. If you declare a wrong handicap and don’t correct the mistake before your opponent makes a stroke: • If the declared handicap is too high and this affects the number of strokes you get or give, you are disqualified.

10

EMIRATES

G O L F

C L UB

S CH O O L

O F

R U LE S

You have a responsibility to: • Tell your opponent the right number of strokes you have taken when asked. The player receives the general penalty (loss of hole) if they give the opponent the wrong number of strokes taken, unless they correct that mistake in time. There is no penalty if there is no effect on the result of the hole. • Make your opponent aware as soon as reasonably possible after you get a penalty. • Know the match score. If the players mistakenly agree on a wrong match score, they may correct the mistake before it’s too late. However, if not corrected in time, the wrong match score becomes the actual match score. In a match you should protect your own rights and interests under the Rules: • If you know or believe that your opponent has breached a Rule that has a penalty, you may act on the breach or choose to ignore it. • But if you and your opponent deliberately agree to ignore a breach or penalty you both know applies, you are both disqualified. • If you and your opponent disagree whether one of you has breached a Rule, you may protect your rights by asking for a ruling.

If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply email your query to me at churley@dubaigolf.com. If you enjoyed the article and found it helpful, feel free to drop me an email at the above address, quote the code SORACH, and be entered into a prize draw!

AGRONOMY UPDATE

W

ell, it’s been quite a few months for the Golf Course Maintenance department. The maturing of the new greens on the Majlis has been great to see and far exceeded our expectations after 6 months of growth. The morning maintenance course closures have been a welcome addition to both courses as it gives us time to do work that is vital for the health of them both. It also helps us present the courses better when it is re-opened later in the morning. This could be by watering in sand on the greens or fertilising the whole course during that closure. November as usual was a busy month for the courses, this can be a difficult time for the grass due to wear and falling temperatures which causes growth to slow. We were happy with how both courses stood up to it and this was mainly down to the weather still being very good and warm at times. The moving of ropes helps us spread the wear and we made a conscious effort this year. December saw us getting the overseeding done on the Majlis course. We did it in 2 stage’s this year, with the tees and approaches being done the first week and the rough done the second. The seed has come up well and we continue to water where needed to help seed germinate. Its very important that we keep trolleys out of roped off areas as these can affect growth and stop it maturing at the rate it should do. We will continue to fertilise all areas on the Majlis through January, so the course matures and plays well. We will introduce a semi rough cut the first week of the month and add walkways to please use them.

The Faldo course will not have the rough overseeded this year. We will be doing the tees as these have heavy wear through the winter. The main reason for not doing the is that we want to make a big effort to remove Tropical Signal Grass on the Faldo course. If we start spraying while it is dormant, we can eradicate a lot of areas and when the temperatures start to come up encourage grass growth in the areas where the weed has been removed. There maybe times if wear on certain areas is a little too much and as a result will rope off sections of holes and be cart paths only. We will monitor this though and communicate if implemented.

It is still vital we fill divots on the fairways and repair pitch marks. Its quite concerning going out onto the course through the day and see these not done. The temperatures are a lot lower which means growth is less, this causes recovery to take longer. You do not want to be putting over lots of pitch marks which could affect ball roll. Happy New Year and enjoy your golfing in 2022. Matthew Perry Golf Course Superintendent

RECREATION UPDATE Dear Members,

N

I hope this finds you well and healthy, a Happy New Year to you all! ovember and December were busy months for all departments, and Recreation was no different with us opening 7 new Padel Tennis Courts, as well as huge numbers utilizing the gym and pool facilities. Padel, as I am sure many of you are aware, is currently the fastest growing sport in the region and we are delighted to offer this amazing sport across our clubs. It was fantastic to see so many members sign up to our complimentary member mornings at the start of December, and we will look to roll out more of these mornings early into 2022!! This month, I must give a huge shout out to Michael Lancaster from my Personal Trainer team, who put his body through the mill during November to raise funds for Movember and raise awareness for Men’s Health. With a personal challenge of doing 100 full body Pull Ups per day not enough for him, he ran 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours at the end of the month, and all whilst wearing a 10kg weight vest! Even then, with his team slightly short of their target amount, Michael donned the

vest again and set off on a 30km run to raise the final amount. During this run, he announced he would not stop until his target was raised. After a grueling 42km, his target was eventually hit, and he has been in an ice bath recovering ever since! A massive well done to Michael and be sure to pass on your congratulations should you see him!

For the social media fans out there, please follow @fitlabdubai on Instagram to stay up to date on all things Leisure & Recreation across the clubs! As always, please come to myself with any questions or queries and I will be happy to assist. Many thanks Dougie

We recently announced our new Vice-Captains for 2022 who will be Club Captains for 2023. I am truly delighted that long term members Evelyn Downham and Jonathan Hall accepted our invitation to be our Lady and Gents Vice-Captain respectively. We know that Evelyn and Jonathan will do a fabulous job in their new roles and provide strong support for our current Captains Sheila McIlroy and Steve Drake who have been doing a fabulous job since becoming our first Captains back in October. I would like to extend my thanks to each of these members along with our Member’s Consultative Committee who give up their time and expertise to help us improve the member experience at our wonderful Club.

TEE TIME AVAILABILITY Like all of the golf courses in Dubai, Earth and Fire are extremely busy and have been for some time. We are delighted to have welcomed many new members over the past 12 months and we are seeing a large increase in the average number of member rounds being played. This is fantastic as it means the club is buzzing and golf members are getting more value for money than before in terms of rounds played. The downside of this is of course it is more difficult to secure your ideal tee time and so it’s important to take advantage of your member booking window and book well in advance.

M E SSAGE

ETIQUETTE Recently I have been asked by some members if the reason that we are so busy is because we are packing the courses with visitor golfers who can book months in advance. I am happy to inform you that this is not the case. Visitor rounds are in fact slightly down compared to winter 2019/20 before the pandemic. Given the increased demand from our members to play golf, we have further reduced the number of tee times available for tourists to book in advance at peak green fee rates. It should be noted that we limit advanced visitor bookings to mainly offpeak times. For example, both courses are reserved for members and their guests only in the early mornings when most members wish to play.

CL UB

Given that we are the beginning of the new year, it’s a good time to remind all members of the importance of on-course etiquette. Please remember to help look after the courses by ensuring you seed your divots, repair pitch-marks and always rake your bunkers properly. This means using a rake rather than your feet or dragging a golf club through the sand! Remember that everyone will enjoy their game so much more if we all respect the course and of course ensure a sensible pace of play. Thank you for taking the time to read this brief update and I look forward to seeing you at the Club and enjoying a wonderful year together at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Warmest wishes, Stephen

“I

Dear Members, t’s incredible how quickly time passes, now 3 months into my Captaincy and so much has happened in that time. A huge thanks to the club and sponsors LuxHomes and LoungeSpa for sponsoring the Captains drive-in in October. It was great to see well over 100 of our members participate in what I hope was a fun day for all.

As we start the New Year, I am very much looking forward to working with Jonny Hall, our newly appointed Vice Captain and of course Captain for 2023. I am confident we will form a good partnership to help Stephen and the team continue to take the club forward. This was quickly followed by the Aviv Dubai Championship and the DPW with some world class golfers in both fields. A huge credit to Stuart Horwood and the team for working their magic and presenting the courses in excellent condition. It was also a personal highlight to meet

the DPW Champion, Collin Morikawa - what an exceptional talent he is and what a way he finished the event to claim the title. We also launched the Tuesday morning Captain & Pro v members 9 hole challenge in October. It has been a great way to meet members, new and not so new, as well as get your feedback and I look forward to meeting many more of you in 2022. Please do sign-up for a fun 9-holes. It’s also been great to see such interest in the monthly medals with really high member attendance rates seen in the last quarter. I know Steff has been working hard to deliver some great events and has a packed schedule lined up for 2022. When I accepted the Captains role I stated I would focus on player etiquette and so wanted to share my thoughts on what I have seen so far. In short, I think we have some way to go still in this area. Areas for particular improvement would include pace of play, raking of bunkers and repairing of pitchmarks. If we are to fully support Stuart and his team we really do need to improve in these areas. It takes no time to rake a bunker you have just stepped in or to find the mark your ball left on the green. So my ask is for all to take personal responsibility for looking after and caring for what are to me, the best two golf courses in the UAE. Let’s keep them that way. Steve Drake Captain

SHEILA MCILROY

JUMEIRAH GOLF ESTATES LADY CAPTAIN Dear Members,

I

’m delighted that Jumeirah Golf Estates is featuring in this latest edition of Club Life and happy to share how life has been as Lady Captain.

The beginning of our Captaincy started in October with the Captain’s Drive-In been a very popular event. Ismail Sharif, Managing Director, presented Steve Drake and I with our club jackets and thankfully nerves did not stop us both hitting receptable shots and teeing off into a role of what is a tremendous honor and privilege. Massive thanks to Lux Homes and The Lounge Spa for their very generous sponsorship of our inaugural event. Format of the day was a friendly scramble with dinner and prize giving followed with a Q&A with Stephen Hubner Director of Golf Operations. October was a busy month on the Ladies Calendar with our Wednesday mornings group competing in both individual and team events with wonderful prizes from Park Hyatt and The Lounge Spa, our excellent award winning spa that’s based here at JGE. November was a little quieter on our home schedule as JGE played host to The AVIV Tournament on Fire and Earth showcasing the DP WORLD Championship. Having the big boys demonstrate how both courses should be played is always a highlight on any JGE member’s list and always a wonderful opportunity for us to volunteer and get extra close to the action. We certainly weren’t disappointed, with the performance of Colin Morikawa and his outstanding ending to a magical year. December had us back playing, with both courses presenting extra long rough and faster greens, all fruits of the hard work that Stuart Horwood and his agronomy team had put in preparation of the European Tour

L AD Y

Events. Our season closed with the popular Christmas Scramble with decorated golf carts, face masks, lots of sparkles and prizes for all.

Although, the role of Lady Captain is new to JGE, our Ladies Section has been in existence for a number of years and comprises of an amazing group of ladies with a common goal to play golf and enjoy the banter both on and off the course. Massive thanks to Annie Browne and Wilemijn Huizer for establishing a strong foundation and representing JGE in our ICC events. January will see us teeing off in our ICC competition with Saadiyat and Emirates Golf Federation and we are all looking forward to the excitement and drama that this exciting event always delivers. Part of the New Year plan is to grow our group and focus on encouraging the ladies that are new to golf and having lessons at the Peter Cowan academy to join our regular Wednesday group. I wish you all a very safe and healthy 2022 and I hope that golf will be a major part of it. Sheila McIlroy Lady Captain

TOURNAMENT EXECUTIVE

ith this being my very first time in Dubai, I would like to thank all the members and colleagues for the warm welcome. I began my work in Jumeriah the week of the AVIV Dubai Championship. I could not imagine experiencing working at two European Tour events in my first two weeks here. It was a fantastic experience, once I hope to get another chance of. I grew up in North Wales with my dad and older brother playing golf at a high standard and I was introduced to golf at a very young age. I had a successful amateur career winning the Welsh Boys Strokeplay title in 2010 and represented Wales Boys at Under 16s and at the Home Internationals in 2012. I realised I wanted to focus my career on golf, so I began the PGA Training Degree in 2018 while under the supervision of the Head Professional at North Whales Golf Club while studying out of the University of Birmingham. I have competed in PGA events around the UK, while assisting and helping other golfers achieve their golfing goals. In 2015 I graduated from Bangor University receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Retail Management and in 2022 I will be graduating from the University of Birmingham as a PGA professional. Prior to commencing my work at Jumeriah, I have furthered my education by retaining a level one certification out of the Titleist Performance Institute, level one certified instructor with Swing Catalyst and finally been certified in the Ping Fitting Training Program. My role at Jumeirah Golf Estates is the Tournament Executive and I look forward to assisting the Golf Operations team to the best of my ability with my current knowledge and experience along with developing and learning new skills day by day. I look forward to meeting and getting to know each and every member.

AGRONOMY UPDATE

2

Dear Members, 022 looks to be a very promising year for the golf courses. The first quarter will be focused on general golf course maintenance, ensuring our members and guests have the courses to enjoy. During this time there will be general practices like light topdressing and needle tining. We consciously carry out these tasks on a Monday so by the weekend there is no evidence of sand.

The current weed issue on both courses is a major concern for us and we are working on a plan to reduce the population drastically during this year. By February a thorough plan of action will be shared and explained to the membership committee to pass on should you have any questions or concerns. This will be actioned in March and ongoing thru September.

After some great feedback from the landscape work completed on holes 16,17,18 of earth we will continue this project of woodland management. Starting between hole 4 and 5 of earth and then moving to hole 7 and 8. The recent investment from Dubai golf of our own woodchipping machine allows us to quickly improve the presentation in these areas but this does come with some disruption to your round when playing those holes.

We hope you enjoy your golf during these winter months and thank you for your continued support which allows us to keep improving the golf course for your enjoyment. Best regards, Stuart Horwood

s with the beginning of every year, there is always a lot to communicate about club life – so yes, you guessed it - it’s another long one!! Please do put your feet up, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the read!

I’d firstly like to wish you a very Happy New Year and all the very best for a healthy, safe and successful 2022! The New Year has certainly started a little differently given the changes to the official UAE weekend and of course the recent downpours... I have to say though that this has made our Golf Course Superintendent (David Taggart) extremely happy, as the fresh rain water does wonders for the turf health at this time of year.

COVID LATEST As you are no doubt aware, the recent surge in Covid cases across Dubai has all businesses and individuals concerned. We are no different and in response to this latest wave, we have increased our cleaning and disinfecting schedules across the club. To help further protect our members, guests and colleagues, I’d like to remind you to always wear your mask when you are moving around any indoor areas, and if you do happen to contract the virus and you have been at the club in the days before, then please do reach out by email to our Membership Manager – Ann (ann.daniel@hyatt.com), and let her know. We can also assist in contacting any member or guest that you feel you’ve had close contact with here at the club.

OUTGOING 2021 CAPTAINS I’d like to say a BIG thank you to our outgoing Captains – Abdullah Al Naboodah and Joy Lirio. They both had a wonderful year in their respective roles as Club Captains and supported the club in so many ways - especially in a fund raising capacity, raising a significant

amount of money for our Colleague Fund and the Al Jalila foundation. Congratulations to them both on a great year as Captain.

INCOMING 2022 CAPTAINS Many congratulations and the best of luck to our 2022 Captains – Max Burrow and Beatrice Galeppini. Max and Beatrice are excited to commence their roles, they are popular and very loyal members with a strong track record in winning tournaments! As with all our previous Captains, they are very approachable and will always be open to discussing any feedback or suggestions you’d like to communicate to the club’s management.

NEW 2022 VICE CAPTAINS The announcement of the new Vice Captains is always a highly anticipated moment, as the two individuals will then take office as the new Club Captains the following year. For 2022 I’m delighted to announce that your new Vice Captains are…. Gene Cha and Shiba Wahid! Gene is Korean, a hotelier by trade and a Founder member of the club - first joining in 1993! He’s an extremely popular member, especially within the Asian communities and has been an active MCC member in 2021. Shiba is from India, has been a member since 2014. Again, Shiba is an extremely popular and loyal member, as well as an active contributor to the ladies section. On behalf of the club, we wish them both all the very best in their supporting roles as they build up to their 2023 Captaincy.

CAPTAIN’S DRIVE IN A near date for the diary to officially inaugurate the new Captains, is the Captain’s Drive In, which takes place on Sunday, 16th January alongside the OMA Emirates Monthly Medal. Please don’t forget to sign up for this event, as it’s always a very special occasion as we gather around the 1st tee to watch Max and Beatrice drive off.

NEW TOURNAMENT CALENDAR Following the recent switch of official weekend days in the UAE, from Friday/Saturday to Saturday/Sunday, we have needed to re-jig the tournament calendar to suit. Please log in to the member zone at https://www.bydubaigolf.com/ MemberZone/ to see the updated tournament calendar. You can enter tournaments through VIYA, by registering at Golf Reservations or lastly by sending an email to golfoffice@hyatt.com

a home member winner this year – perhaps our very own Bayhaan Lakdawala will go one better on his 2021 Runner-Up position and bring the trophy back to home soil…? If you’re keen to see how the tournament unfolds, please feel free to come down to the club on Sunday afternoon and cheer the leaders in from the back of the 18th green. We’ll be setting up a refreshments bar to add to the atmosphere!

2022 MCC (MEMBERS CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE) Each year I have the pleasure in writing to the membership and invite self-nominations for interested members to join the MCC. Last year we had an incredible group of members which was aptly led by our Club Captains (Abdulla & Joy) and Vice Captains (Max & Beatrice), alongside Franz Silhanek, Jehangir Makhdum, Gene Cha, Michael Estafanous and Yujung Seo. I’d like to say a sincere big thank you to all of them for their support, ideas, suggestions and honest feedback throughout the year, which resulted in numerous improvements being made across many areas of the club. As per last year, we are looking to fill 5 places on the MCC, to support the Captains and Vice Captains that automatically form part of the committee.

If you would like to join the MCC for 2022, please do submit your nomination in writing by email to Ann Daniel (ann. daniel@hyatt.com) by midnight on Sunday, 16th January 2022. The MCC will be announced by the end of January with the first meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 8th February.

MEMBERS PARTY As you may recall, sadly the 2021 Members Party couldn’t go ahead due to strict Covid regulations and the high risk of holding such an event of 400-500 people. This year however, we are planning to host the event on Tuesday, 1st February. This is of course subject to changing regulations amidst this latest wave of Covid cases. We will of course keep a very close eye on cases, as well as regulatory guidance and confirm the event arrangements closer to the date. In the meantime, please do keep this date penciled into your diaries which will surely prove to be a great celebration for the club. I hope you’ve enjoyed the long weekend and I look forward to seeing many of you at the club over the coming days and weeks.

THE 2022 MEN’S OPEN The first tournament of the new calendar year is The Men’s Open sponsored by Omega, which is this coming weekend Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th January. Please note the event is fully subscribed with a waitlist based on handicap order. We’ll of course all be hoping for

DUBAI CREEK RESORT CAPTAIN

I

I am honoured to introduce myself as the Captain of Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club for 2022. grew up in Devon in the South-West of England and studied in Birmingham, eventually moving to Dubai in 2012 for work. I come from a long-line of golfers and I first teed it up in 1997 at the Police Golf Course in Harare, Zimbabwe with my father and grandmother. In the UK I played county golf for Devon and was a Junior Captain at Exeter G&CC. Since being a member at Dubai Creek I have won several UAE OOM events, have successfully captained the UAE amateurs to victory over the UAE pros in the Dubai Golf Trophy and have won a national title at the Oman Amateur Open. Several of these achievements have afforded me opportunities to compete against the pros on the European, Challenge and MENA Tours, which have been particular highlights in my golfing life. I have been a member at Dubai Creek since 2013 and have had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with a variety of our members. The diversity and longevity of the Creek’s members is a testament to the openness and inclusivity of the club, which is unmatched elsewhere. As a member I have been afforded some wonderful opportunities, including being part of our dominant Mens Scratch League Team, and spending the last 2 years on the Members Consultative Committee (MCC). The club is a second home for me and a place that always makes me feel welcomed; thanks to the amazing staff and good company of the members. When I am not golfing, I advise in the environmental, social and sustainability fields with ‘5 Capitals Environmental & Management

Consultancy’. I have a keen interest in such matters at the club, as well as course condition and club tournaments. The 2021 overhaul works to the tees, alongside the crab grass eradication have set the course on a positive track and there is a clearer vision to ensure it can be presented to a consistently higher standard. I also hope to work with the club to facilitate other enhancements to member facilities and club offerings.

It is a real privilege to be selected for this position and I thank those members and past captains who recommended me for the captaincy, as well as the club management, Dubai Golf, Park Hyatt and Wasl for supporting this. I am particularly excited to be sharing the captaincy with our Lady Captain and my good friend Beatrice Gallepini. Beatrice and I look forward to a wonderful 2022, as well as meeting and engaging with you all throughout the year. Best wishes, Max Burrow

BEATRICE GALEPPINI

DUBAI CREEK RESORT LADY CAPTAIN Dear Members,

T

It is my privilege to become Lady Captain of the Dubai Creek Golf Club this year.

o introduce myself, I joined Dubai Creek back in 2013 with my husband Edoardo, and since then this club has become a second home for our family. We moved in Dubai in 2009 with our first son Emanuele, who started to play golf in 2013, and in 2014 our second child Eugenio was born and has become a well-known at the club for his energy; Eugenio now is addicted to golf also! A special thanks to everyone at the club who encouraged both our sons to take up the game and be part of this Club. Looking forward to an exciting year ahead and getting to know many of you. Best wishes, Beatrice Galeppini

L AD Y

Since I joined the Club I was instantly made to feel very welcome by all the members, and I soon discovered the ladies section at Dubai Creek, which is very well supported and organised by the previous captains. Every week there is a competition to get everybody together, and is a great way of socializing and enjoying some fun competition. A highlight for me has been part of the ICC team that won the last two years. Hopefully, this year we can make it three-in-a-row!

TOURNAMENTS UPDATE

T

TOURNAMENTS

he start of the 2021-22 Season saw the launch of our new club tournament concept which aims to hark back to the golf club traditions many of us grew up with in the UK. This new calendar features brand new tournaments, old favourites and some tweaked classics. The end result is that you now have 26 chances to get your name on our club honours boards through dedicated Honours Board Tournaments. Next was the Seniors Open – a staple in the Dubai Creek calendar. Our winner this year was Khaled Samawi with rounds of 76 & 77 to take a one shot victory over Robert Darrah.

season underway with the Men’s Amateur Open and the updated tournaments calendar is now displayed around the club following the recent change to the UAE weekend.

HANDICAPPING In case you were unaware, part of my role here at the club is to manage the handicap system and act as the handicap committee. One role of the handicap committee is to perform audits on the handicaps of all prize winners in our tournaments. This enables us to capture repeat occurrences of handicap manipulation that lead to improved tournament performance. I thought it may be of interest to you to understand this auditing process:

Since September we have hosted six of these events already. We began with the Autumn Cup in October which was a brand new strokeplay event with the top eight qualifying for match play knockouts. Our qualifyiers were Shiba Wahid, Jerome Natali, Suneel Agerwal, John Fellingham, Beatrice Galeppini, Anish Bhatia Max Burrow and Mark Dupree. We are now through to the semi-finals and only Max Burrow, Mark Dupree, John Fellingham and Shiba Wahid remain… the champion will be crowned on Club Championships weekend.

Another new event, the Bogey Bowl, came later on in November featuring the intriguing Bogey format. Our inaugural winner of this event was John Fellingham who finished two-up on the course. In order to celebrate the UAE’s 50th year, our Club Captain, Abdullah Al Naboodah envisioned and sponsored the UAE Shield – an individual stableford tournament. Our first winner of this very special event was Saeed Al Malik, and our best UAE National was Salem Dasmal. Captain’s Day is always an excellent occasion and this year was no exception. Joy Lirio and Abdullah Al Naboodah, our captains this year, put on an amazing day for the members and our delighted winners were Allan Stanton and Sammy Eldin. Finally, another brand new event for this season was the Past Captain’s Salver, a pairs scramble event designed to celebrate the contributions of our Club Captains over the years. Against all the odds, the team of John Fish and Michael Nielsen took the victory. We are very much looking forward to getting the second half of the

• Compare gross score recorded in the tournament with adjusted gross score recorded on the EGF system • Check the Exceptional Players report to ensure prize winners do not have a significant difference between their average tournament score and their average general play score which may indicate handicap manipulation. • Visual check of the score record to check for penalty rounds or anything else that looks unusual

Actions we can take: If a player has significantly lower tournament scores than their general play scores, we can manually reduce a players handicap to reflect their average tournament score and freeze their handicap here to see how they perform on a lower handicap.

Top Tip: Enter your adjusted gross score (no more than a net double bogey per hole) after EVERY round that you play using the EGF app or the EGF terminal in the clubhouse to avoid penalty rounds and innacurate reductions in your handicap. As always, if you have any questions related to tournaments and/or handicapping, please feel free to reach out to me on Thomas.hall@ hyatt.com and if you have a handicap complaint to raise, please use handicap.committee@hyatt.com (you can rest assured I am the only person with access to this email if you wish to make it anonymous). See you around the club soon. Best wishes, Thomas Hall Assistant Golf Services Manager

DAVID TAGGART

AGRONOMY UPDATE Dear Members,

F

Check out the below link showing exactly how to repair a pitchmark: https://youtu.be/GuYXMn4tA10

RAIN INTERRUPTIONS ollowing the recent downpours, the golf course has held up extremely well with most turf areas now clear of casual water, however many of the desert areas still remain water logged with standing surface water. Subject to further rain events this week, we expect these areas to be clear by the weekend in time for the Men’s Open. The great news is that the fresh rain water is great for general turf health and supports the process of flushing salt through the profile of the soil.

COOLER TEMPERATURES As many of you know this year we have made the decision not to overseed the golf course. So far this has been a successful decision and we have been pleased to see so many members on the course through a time when we would otherwise be restricted due to growing the new winter Ryegrass in the months of November and December. Whilst removing overseed has paid dividends in November and December we now enter a crucial period over the next few months.

As temperatures continue to drop and we experience cloudy days, the ‘summer’ Bermuda grass will begin to struggle until we experience consistently warmer temperatures (back end of March). Golfers can play a vital role in how well the golf course deals with this colder weather. Please make every effort to follow the below steps and encourage your playing partner to do the same:• Observe directional signage, rope and weekday cart path only protections. These are in place to distribute wear more evenly and to protect key areas of the golf course. • Drive on the fairways and avoid the rough. The rough will be the first areas to suffer in cold temperatures and will need to be protected. • Fill all your divots. The grass is growing slower now than at any point of the year. Any divots taken at this busy time will take at least double the time to recover than they would in the summer months. • Repair your pitch mark and someone else’s. In the same way as the divots, any unrepaired pitchmarks will take longer to recover now than they would at any other point of the year. In reference to the last bullet point, it’s essential that pitchmarks are repaired the right way – and yes, there are many incorrect ways to repair a pitchmark, which can do more harm than good!

All in all we’re pleased with the playability and presentation of the golf course, during what is our first winter in over 20 years that we haven’t overseeded the golf course with a winter Rye grass.

GREENSIDE BUNKER COMPACTION Over the last couple of months we’ve received a lot of feedback from members about the greenside bunkers being hard and compact. The root cause of this is irrigation water overthrow that compacts the sand, which we won’t be able to fully cure until we replace what is a 30 year old irrigation system (planned for 2023/24). In the meantime, David is working on a solution to adapt our ‘Sandpro’ (machine which rotovates the sand in bunkers), which will help alleviate this issue and make the process less labour intensive. I’ll update you once some initial trials have been done and hopefully we see a positive shift in the playability.

BUNKER FACES You will have noticed that this season, David and his team have changed the way our bunker faces look, which now promote less plugged balls and allows the ball to roll down from the face to the flat areas of the bunker. Unfortunately this makes it difficult to get in and out of some bunkers, however in general there are always better areas than others (areas of the bunker that don’t have a deep face), where you can step in and out of the bunker much easier. Although this is common sense, we are still seeing many golfers on a daily basis, trudging up and down the deep faces of bunkers, which is not only ruining the way the bunkers look and play, but more concerning is they don’t rake up their mess behind them. Please can I request your support in keeping an eye out for golfers that do this and report them to a Marshal immediately, who can then help educate them. Thanks for reading. As always, I’d be delighted to hear back from you if you have any queries, concerns or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me personally.

NEW GOLF CART FLEET & GPS I’m delighted to announce that we will soon be receiving delivery of a brand new fleet of EZGO Golf Carts. The carts are fitted with lithium batteries, which take less power to charge and last longer out on the course, making them much more environmentally friendly. The carts will also be fitted with the latest in GPS technology – the same technology you may have seen at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Due to global shipping challenges the arrival of the carts has been delayed, however we fully expect to have all 80 new carts in operation by the end of Q1.

CINNAMON BAZAAR AT PARK HYATT DUBAI Opened on 1st December, Cinnamon Bazaar, a part of the Cinnamon Collection, is a modern Indian cuisine concept brought to Dubai for the very first time, straight from the heart of London. Cinnamon Bazaar is a fantastic dining experience that draws its inspiration from the colours, sounds, smells and energy you find in many spice markets across India. This is also reflected in the décor which makes for idyllic ‘Instagramable’ surroundings! The ala carte and tasting menus was designed by the CEO himself – Chef Vivek Singh, one of the most renowned Chefs in the UK. FLAVOURS OF INDIA INTRODUCING CINNAMON BAZAAR PARK HYATT DUBAI DUBAI CREEK RESORT

The concept behind Cinnamon Bazaar draws its inspiration from the vibrant colours, scents and sounds from spice markets across India. The restaurant pays homage to these routes; inspiring regional dishes and cross-cultural flavours to take your dining experience on a journey through India and the Middle East.

T

he Cinnamon Bazaar has officially opened at Park Hyatt Dubai at the Dubai Creek Resort. This upmarket Indian restaurant is the first of three venues opening at the hotel under the Cinnamon Collection brand, with each drawing unique inspiration from the renowned Cinnamon Club in London. Over the course of the next two years, the hotel will also become home to ‘Cinnamon Kitchen’, and finally ‘The Cinnamon Club’, as founder and executive chef Vivek Singh has established a residency at the Resort.

Cinnamon Bazaar is from the Cinnamon Collection founded by renowned Chef Vivek Singh. Famed for his refined approach to Indian cuisine, Vivek has changed the UK’s Indian culinary scene with his 4 London restaurants, his first of which opened in 2001.

The interiors showcase a feast for the eyes, including bold tiling, and of course, the brand’s iconic drapery hanging from the ceilings. Chef Vivek Singh added: “We are delighted to be working with Park Hyatt Dubai and excited to be able to bring all three brands to Dubai. It’s a pleasure to be working with Park Hyatt Dubai who, like The Cinnamon Collection, have a longstanding and deserved reputation for excellence and we look forward to welcoming a new group of diners.” The menu will consist of Indian modern dishes seasoned with international touches. Favourites include crab bonda (Calcutta spiced crab and beetroot in chickpea batter) and chicken haleem with masala sourdough toast. Mains include lamb rogan josh shepherd’s pie; grilled aubergine with sesame peanut crumble, labna and toasted buckwheat; and salli wagyu short rib with pickled radish. For the more adventurous souls, we recommend you try the restaurant’s 12-course taster menu (AED 250 pp) to take you on a true discovery around this vibrant bazaar. NEW YEAR, NEW GROOVES

W

ith the New Year just around the corner and the announcement of the new Titleist Vokey SM9 wedges early 2022, it may be time to book in for a wedge fitting to have more birdie putts next year.

Some statistics to back up the detrimental effect that groove wear has on performance would be the amount of roll out that would increase your proximity to hole on your approach shots.

A brand new wedge would see approx 10 foot worth of roll out with lower launch and a spin rate of around 8500rpm. A wedge that has played 75 rounds of golf would see the roll out increase by 8 feet and a decrease in spin of 1100rpm. A wedge that has played 125 rounds produces a massive 24 feet worth of roll out and has a decrease in spin by 2000rpm. I’m sure you will agree that you would feel more comfortable with a 10 foot putt rather than a 24 foot putt after your approach shot.

Even for the amateur golfer a fresh set of grooves will provide you with more control, more confidence and ultimately hit the ball closer to the flag setting up more birdie putts.
