lord mayor’s welcome I am delighted to welcome you all to the 2014 Dublin Pride Festival, which promises to be the biggest and brightest yet, celebrating the rich history and diversity of our wonderful city and its people. As usual, this year’s festival features a range of exciting events focusing on freedom, dignity and respect, and culminating in the Pride Parade through our main thoroughfares. Dublin City Council is pleased to support Dublin Pride once again, and I would like to extend my best wishes to all the organisers, volunteers, visitors and participants who make this event a huge success. Oisín Quinn Ardmhéara Bhaile Átha Cliath Lord Mayor of Dublin

chairperson’s welcome This year’s festival takes place on the cusp of significant legal and social change for the LGBTQ community. While Ireland has become progressively more accepting and diverse, we must work together to ensure that legislation regarding marriage equality, gender recognition and families is enacted, for the benefit and freedom of society as a whole. You also join us at an important juncture for Dublin Pride, which finds us changing as an organisation to become more inclusive and representative. We are re-examining Pride’s place in the Ireland of 2014; its political beginnings and its aims for the future, to ensure that we meet the needs of the community. We want Pride to be a platform with which our members, volunteers and affiliates are proud to be associated. Under the theme of freedom for all, we acknowledge that while we have attained much in our fight for equality, a lot remains outstanding. Join us as we commemorate our origins, celebrate our gains, and highlight what has yet to be achieved. Yours in Pride, Jason Flynn; Chairperson; Dublin LGBTQ Pride Ltd

pridegrand chairmans welcome 2014 marshal Colm O’Gorman I am honoured and delighted to be Grand Marshal of the 2014 Dublin Pride Parade, and to highlight this year’s theme of Freedom. I work to ensure, among other things, that human rights violations are highlighted. While Ireland has undergone considerable transformation in recent years, we must remember that next year will be momentous in changing the lives of people in the LGBTQ community. I believe in the power of change; the possibility for people to transcend their circumstances instead of remaining trapped by them. In the events that led to the founding of One in Four, I realised that sometimes the biggest leap is simply getting people to think something they believe to be unthinkable, to name what they intrinsically know to be unjust. Getting the people of a nation to stand up for what they know to be right, change their way of thinking and thus effect change. It’s a guiding principle for Amnesty International and its three million-plus members and supporters; that ordinary people making small differences makes a greater whole. This year, with so much to celebrate, we must also remember those Pride Parades and celebrations that are not allowed in other parts of the world. We have brothers and sisters in Russia, in Africa, even in the United States that do not enjoy the freedoms that we do; and they need us to speak up on their behalf. We must remember too, that even if our citizens achieve full equality in the eyes of the law, legislative change may not alter attitudes towards our families and us. Therefore, while prejudice continues to exist, it remains our duty to fight it. Meanwhile, enjoy the festival, and have a happy Pride! Colm O’Gorman, Executive Director; Amnesty International Ireland.

pride chairmans Proud to be 40 atwelcome Pride Gay Switchboard Ireland is the oldest LGBT community support in the country and this year celebrates 40 years proudly supporting the LGBT community. Since 1974, Switchboard’s friendly trained volunteers have been providing confidential emotional support, information and signposting and have answered approximately 116,000 calls. When Switchboard was founded in 1974, it had to trade as Tel-A-Friend because the phone company would not publish the word ‘gay’ in the phone directory. Ireland has progressed a lot in the past 40 years so it is not unreasonable to think that there is no need for a service like Switchboard in 2014. Yet, in 2013, volunteers answered 2761 calls, indicating that there is still a real need out there for confidential support. While some of the issues may have changed, there are times when people still need a confidential ear to support and guide them through whatever is going on in their life. “With LGBT people identified as seven times more at risk of suicide, it is important that a service such as Switchboard is there for people to reach out to”, says Tony Cooney, Director of Gay Switchboard Ireland. Suicide issues account for a small proportion of calls to Switchboard. Callers are welcome to contact the service and chat about anything that relates to their sexuality. As a result, the range of things that people ring up for can vary from sexual health to enquiring about a group or organisation. Indeed, callers do not always identify as LGBT, as sometimes family or friends might ring up to seek support or information. Gay Switchboard Ireland is open 7 days a week plus it provides a weekly face to face support service on Saturdays in Outhouse. As Switchboard’s tag line suggests; too often we underestimate the power of a listening ear; it has the potential to turn a life around. Switchboard is proud to support this year’s Dublin Pride and looks forward to continuing to support the LGBT community of Ireland. Gay Switchboard Ireland can be contacted on: 01-872 1055, 7 days a week or email support on: ask@ghn.ie. Further details on their website: www.gayswitchboard.ie

Voice of the Youth Whoever is reading this today has the same wish: To be accepted, not tolerated. Most people at Pride 2014 have experienced some sort of homophobic or transphobic bullying: Either when the classroom door closed and a negative comment was passed; or the teacher turned her back for one minute. Everyone has the right to be themselves and be proud. Nobody should be judged for how they identify or for who they love. Most of us who are LGBTor Q have at one stage or another, felt alone. But the truth is no matter where in Ireland you are, there is always someone to support you and talk with. As young people, we are proud to stand up and say: ‘Yes I am part of the LGBTQ community and I believe in change; that one day it won’t be same-sex marriage it will just be marriage; that no one will ever have to (come out) because it won’t be expected of them or seen as necessary. That peace will be found and we can all have happy lives and live freely with our family.’ (paragraph) The world needs to see this and open their eyes. We will be the ones to form change and we can stand proud when it’s been accomplished and say: WE did this! Micheal (www.belongto.ie)

the art of boys and girls Curated by Barry Keegan, “The Art of Boys & Girls”, is a series of works presented in a variety of media but all representing the sexes in equal measure, some defying gender and others exploring the face and body. Keegan’s work is a series called “Sit with Me” and is joined by 4 fellow artists, Abigail Denniston, Paul Delaney, Sarah Edmondson and Steve Kelly. Barry has previously exhibited in the Front Lounge and other galleries in the city. His work is mainly figurative and in this series of works the colour palette is limited to tones of grey and white.

Come march with Marriage Equality at this year’s Pride & remind people to exercise their freedom to vote in next year’s referendum so that we can all enjoy the freedom to marry the person we love. follow us:

www.marriagequality.ie

16

March for Marriage LGBT Noise is an independent non-party political organisation that is campaigning for the provision of civil marriage for all people in Ireland, irrespective of gender or sexual identity. This year’s March for Marriage will take place on Sunday 24th August starting at 3pm from City Hall. With the referendum on marriage equality set to take place in 2015, it is imperative that we see a strong turnout at this year’s march so please bring your family and friends along on the day. We hope it will be last march of its kind so let’s make it the biggest one yet! Noise also highlights a range of other LGBT rights issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in Ireland including gender recognition; bullying against LGBT people, parenting and reproductive rights. Additionally, Noise campaigns to end discrimination against LGBT people in employment, specifically calling for the deletion of section 37.1 of the Employment Equality Act.

your space Outhouse LGBT Community Resource Centre is a place where many things happen. The primary goal of Outhouse is to offer a safe space for the LGBT community to meet, organise and make things happen. In 2013 seventy five different groups and organisations held on average sixty meetings per month at Outhouse. Groups and organisations such as Belong To, Gay Switchboard Ireland, Dublin Lesbian Line, Outhouse Book Club, LGBT Noise, Vegan Meet Up, Girls Night In, LGBT Yoga and meditation circles as well as AA and NA and our resident drama group Acting Out all meet at Outhouse. Along with the wide variety of support and information provided at Outhouse many cultural events take place throughout the year such as Blues Festivals, Ladyfest Dublin, Civil Partnerships, Record Store Gay Music Festival, International Gay Theatre Festival as well as one of our favourite events, Outhouse Champagne Breakfast on the morning of Pride Parade Day 28th June from 11am. If you want information on any aspect of the work done at Outhouse, the meetings and groups that occupy the space, sign posting, support or events, drop in to 105 Capel St. email info@outhouse.ie or telephone 01 873 4999. feel good about yourself What are the first words you think of when you hear ‘mental health’? Loneliness, depression, isolation, illness? Is there anything that strikes you about these words? They focus only on the negative aspects of mental health! What about fun, about laughter, what about Feeling Good About Yourself? See Change have once again teamed up with Outhouse, GLEN, TENI and BelongTo, to bring you the Feel Good About Yourself Series for Dublin Pride. See Change is Ireland’s national programme working to change minds about how we perceive mental health problems. It doesn’t matter how you identify, we are all human and can be affected by mental health problems. Last year was the first time that looking after your mental health featured in the Dublin Pride programme and the response was amazing. For many people Pride is a time of celebration and partying, for others it symbolises a time of loneliness and disconnect. Whatever Pride represents to you, and whatever you associate with mental health, the Feel good about yourself series has something for everybody – to help you Feel Good About Yourself at Pride. This programme of events aims to celebrate and educate people about LGBTQ mental health. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the Feel good about yourself series last year and there was a fantastic atmosphere of belonging and inclusion. In the past year the exciting movement to promote positive discussion around mental health has been going from strength to strength and I have no doubt this will be visible at the Feel good about yourself series during this year’s Pride. They are truly inspiring events and we hope to see you there. For more information see log onto www.seechange.ie. Laura Louise Condell
