our marshall - Anna Grodzka MP Dear Friends, I am deeply moved by your inviting me – a Polish woman – to be the Grand Marshal of Dublin Pride and for its parade of freedom and equality in a country which has suffered so much in the past from the oppression of human diversity. The history of Ireland and Poland is a story of communities strongly affected by the scourges of hunger, slavery and injustice. As a consequence both Irish and Poles had to emigrate in search of a better life, often very far away from their own homes. But today we can look for and demand justice and the fair conditions for a dignified life for all, here in Ireland, back in my country and indeed worldwide. We not only have right to do so, but this is our duty. Equality and diversity are inseparable; they are two sides of the same coin. Without them we cannot built really fair, inclusive society. There is no true freedom without the acceptance of diversity, without equal opportunity for everyone. However there are still people who believe they have the one and only ‘recipe’ for being human. According to them everyone who stands out from their rules, everyone who is any way different, everyone who is extraneous is, at worst, an enemy. We demand change in the law, to protect the most vulnerable, especially against poverty, to prevent discrimination based on sex and to not allow discrimination against any minority. I know that the hardest and the most prolonged struggle is the fight for social change in mentality. But I also know we have to keep fighting. We have to demand not only tolerance; we must demand equal rights!

page 5

Equal rights are the foundation of humanism, the basis of culture rooted in the acceptance of man by man. Each and every person, as long as he does not harm others, simply has the right to dignity, the right to freedom, the right to be herself / himself. This is an integral part of basic human rights. To win this battle we must have solidarity. Your hospitality welcomed hundreds of thousands of Poles in Ireland. Among them there are lesbians, gays and transgender people. You work and live together. Poles not only “are among you,” but “they are with you”. They are an integral part of Irish society. We stand in solidarity in our fight. Thank you for that. I am glad we can go together in this joyful Dublin Parade. In the colourful, rainbow parade of equality and freedom. All equal and free and each individually different at the same time. We will be marching happy we could be together. I wish on 29th June we will go jointly in solidarity together for the joy and freedom for all. For justice.

safer sex with pride! Dublin Pride, the Gay Men’s Health Service HSE (GMHS), the Gay Health Network (GHN) and Gay Switchboard Dublin (GSD) have come together to promote HIV prevention and sexual health awareness at the 2013 Dublin Pride Festival. HIV infection continues to rise among men who have sex with men (MSM), along with other STIs such as gonorrhoea and syphilis. Safer sex, and the consistent and proper use of condoms and lube, is the best way to reduce and prevent the transmission of HIV and other STIs. GSD volunteers will staff a special information stand at the Pride Village where free safer sex packs (condom and lube) will be available, together with a range of information leaflets. Short films produced by GHN as part of the Man2Man.ie programme will be broadcast at the Pride Village. In addition, watch out for the promotional banners on the Dublin Pride website. - For more information on HIV prevention and sexual health awareness log on to:www.man2man.ie - To talk with someone ring the GSD Helpline 01 872 1055: for confidential support and information 7 days a week. Have Pride, Play Safe, Be Sexy, Stay Healthy and Talk About It!

feel good about yourself at pride Pride is a time of celebration but also a time for supporting one another. Like everyone else, LGBT people live with mental health issues. Mental health is about how we see and feel about ourselves and how we see and feel about those around us - our families, friends and colleagues. Good mental health helps us deal with problems and tough times in our lives. This Pride, a number of Ireland’s LGBT organisations (BeLonG To, GLEN, Outhouse and TENI) have partnered with See Change to highlight the importance of promoting good mental health, and to help you... ‘Feel Good About Yourself at Pride’ During Dublin Pride 2013, a series of forums, workshops and other events will take place . Each organisation involved will be running their own event and the campaign will culminate with an innovative showcase event, highlighting LGBT mental health issues through performances, testimonials and entertainment. Regardless of your age, sexual orientation or gender identity, there’s sure to be an event that you can relate to and hopefully benefit from. For further information on the campaign and its events, see the listings section of this programme or check out our poster. Feel good about yourself at Pride 2013!

Nurses and midwives lgbt conference Dublin Pride 2013 are delighted to announce the first Nurses & Midwives LGBT Conference to be held in Ireland on Friday the 21st June in the Gresham Hotel. The INMO have managed to attract an excellent line up of speakers, with the keynote address being delivered by Michael Cashman, MEP, who was previously an actor (EastEnders) and playwright and chaired the Stonewall Lesbian and Gay Rights Group in the United Kingdom. Michael is absolutely passionate about LGBT rights and is a regular speaker at many events throughout Europe. Liam Doran, General Secretary of the INMO will kick off proceedings, followed by the Fine Gael openly gay TD Jerry Buttimer. Dr Lesley Hannon representing Gay Doctors Ireland will share some personal experiences and anecdotes, and importantly will propose that marriage discrimination is a health hazard that severely negatively impacts on the health of society. On a similar vein, Dr Mel Duffy and her colleague, Dr Vera Sheridan, will speak about the effects of gendered workplaces on lesbian and gay workers. The very topical issue of marriage equality will be addressed by Moninne Griffith, CEO of Marriage Equality; a subject that will also be addressed by Michael Cashman, MEP. The seminar will also hear from nurses and midwives including Marianne McGriffin, and the seminar will close with a lively panel discussion, followed by a well earned glass of wine! The conference is free, and open to non-nurses, booking is essential, contact Noeleen@inmo.ie or 01 6640611.

Spleen and Ideal by Tiane Doan na Champassak In Spleen and Ideal, beauty is pursued across the disintegrating boundaries between male and female. Transgressive sexual encounters with what at times seems to be one and the same person are captured on instant film and mixed with impressions of the urban architecture in which they are anchored. In this project, which centers on gender and identity confusions, photography is a matter of decisive distance between immersion and detachment. All images were taken in Thailand between 2010 and 2011, and form the first part of a larger body of work in progress, born out of a persistent urge to photographically confront questions regarding gender and sexuality.
