Welcome to the fall 2021 issue of Insight, a newsletter celebrating the accomplishments of our community of scholars. We aim to spotlight insights from people at the Dugoni School working in all areas of scholarship, including clinical or biomedical research, the scholarship of teaching and learning, improvement of the health care system, and professional partnerships that advance the field.
Meet Our New Department Chairs Rebecca Moazzez, BDS, MSc, PhD, FDSRCS (Eng.), FDSRCS (Rest.), MRD, joined the Dugoni School of Dentistry as the chair of the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dentistry in spring 2021. Previously, she was professor of Prosthodontics and Oral Clinical Research at King’s College London School of Dentistry in the UK, where she began teaching in 1998, focusing on predoctoral and specialty prosthodontics. In 2013, she also served as the college’s founding director of the Oral Clinical Research Unit, which has attracted over $7M of funding since its conception. David K. Lam, MD, DDS, PhD, FRCDC became the chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in fall 2021, as well as the Dr. T. Galt and Lee DeHaven Atwood Endowed Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Lam specializes in the comprehensive surgical management of patients with cancer, pathology, and trigeminal nerve injury. His research and clinical programs are closely integrated, and his research addresses the challenges he faces in the clinical management of oral and maxillofacial surgery patients. Dr. Adham A. Azim joined the Dugoni School family as our new chair of the Department of Endodontics. Dr. Azim comes to us from University at Buffalo, where he had been since 2015. An associate professor, his service there included director of the Post-Graduate Program in Endodontics (2015–2021) and head of the Division of Endodontics (2016–2020). Prior to joining the University at Buffalo, Dr. Azim served as the pre-doctoral director in the Department of Endodontics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Impact of rapid palatal expansion on the internal nasal valve and obstructive nasal symptoms in children What is it? A look at whether rapid palatal expansion (RPE) treatment can improve air flow in pediatric patients’ nasal airways. What problem does it aim to solve? Nasal blockage is a common problem which can disrupt normal breathing and cause obstructive sleep apnea. Currently the main treatments involve surgery, which is generally not recommended until after the teen growth spurt is complete. Other treatment options could provide some relief earlier. How does it work? RPE treats upper-jaw constriction in growing patients. Although it mainly targets the mid-palate area, it impacts the airway width as well. Patients were measured before and after treatment, and also were scored using “Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation”, or NOSE. The results: “The amount of expansion significantly correlated with changes in the NOSE score.” What are the real-world implications? “This may show the possibility of considering RPE in managing resistant pediatric nasal airways.” What are the next steps? Future studies should look at long-term impact and involve multidisciplinary teams. Karaoke inspired anesthesia What is it? An entertaining way to help students absorb important course material about using anesthesia with patients. What problem does it aim to solve? Anesthesia is an important procedure that is unforgiving of errors. It’s extremely important to make sure that dental students understand all the steps thoroughly. However, traditional means of teaching this material such as lectures can be insufficiently engaging, and limited audiovisual aids are available. How does it work? Dental students made a parody music video using the song “Good As Hell” by Lizzo. They rewrote the lyrics to explain the steps of anesthesia preparation and delivery, while the video humorously but accurately showed a live demonstration. The video was hosted on the school’s Mediasite server and shared to the Canvas instructional content management system. Students were encouraged to watch the video before participating in the hands-on rotation part of their course, and afterwards their hands-on performance was assessed. Researchers also analyzed viewership of the video. What are the findings? The results: The video analytics, including heat maps, showed full attention to the video by viewers. Students performed very well on armamentarium assembly, with a 100% success rate. Engaging video material that incorporates familiar music combined with lyric captions and pedagogic content may help boost learning and information retention; so might engaging students in the process of creating the educational materials. What are the next steps? Faculty need support and training resources in order to learn and make optimum use of learning technologies; evaluation of injection preparation and delivery needs further analysis to see if there is a clear benefit shown with this course method here as well.
