Since the last issue, the 34th Frederick T. West Orthodontic Lectureship was held in conjunction with the 121st Annual Alumni Meeting at the Fairmont Hotel. Dr. Jae Hyun Park gave a very spirited lecture on topics including impacted cuspids, TADs, and anterior openbite correction.

COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REPORT (CONT’D)

In February, we were honored to host Dr. and Mrs. Richard Rutter (first chairman of the post-graduate program) for a tour and wonderful lunch at the school. It was their first visit to the new campus! Several faculty members came in on their nonteaching days to celebrate the occasion.

The residents were treated to the famous RRR wit and some remembrances.

The school closed down due to the pandemic in mid-March and did not reopen until June. Courses were held online through Cisco WebEx and clinic sessions included presentations by faculty and residents. New patient examinations were scheduled through Zoom meetings. The school’s graduation ceremony scheduled for June 14th was postponed. We have also had to cancel our full faculty meeting in May, the annual welcome picnic for the incoming class as well as the alumni social event for the year.

The Graduation Symposium and Dinner was originally scheduled for Friday, September 25th, but we have had to cancel the physical meeting. The Symposium portion has been canceled, but we are working on some form of graduation ceremony either virtual or with social distancing.

“Creating Magical Smiles” is the theme of the 1st Western Orthodontic Conference, a joint PCSO/RMSO/MSO/SWSO meeting scheduled for October 22-25. The meeting was to be held at the Disneyland Hotel, but the PCSO Board of Directors made the decision to transition from a face-to-face conference to a virtual meeting this fall. While the PCSO cannot hold the meeting at the Disneyland Hotel this year, they have secured the venue for November 2-5, 2023.

Dr. Will Andrews is our planned speaker for the 2021 Frederick T. West Lectureship which is scheduled during the 122nd Annual Alumni Meeting at the Fairmont Hotel.

We are still planning the 50th anniversary celebration of the orthodontic postgraduate program with a tentative date of Saturday, May 15, 2021. Because of the uncertainty of how and when large gatherings can be held, we are considering postponing the event until a vaccine becomes available and people would feel comfortable attending such an event. If you have any suggestions or would like to help with the celebration, please feel free to contact me at orthojet@aol.com.

The events listed above are made possible with assistance from your membership dues. I want to thank you for your continued support. I will end by saying that my comments on unprecedented and challenging times were directed towards the COVID-19 pandemic, but they also speak to the social injustices occurring in our country. I am usually not vocal about my social or political views. But I feel the time is right.

Quoting former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, “America was born with a birth defect; it was slavery”. Many other gross injustices have also occurred throughout our country’s history including the mis-treatment of our Native Americans, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, and the internment of Japanese Americans in “relocation camps” during World War II. Racism has been passed down for generations, but for the first time in my life, I see a glimmer of hope. I am no stranger to racial discrimination, growing up in the early 1960s in the North Beach/Chinatown district of the City and experiencing it not too long ago in Boulder, Colorado. It was not unusual for Chinese to be referred to as “oriental” or “china man” or even worse, “chink”. If you would like to learn more about what the atmosphere was like back then, I encourage you to watch “Ip Man 4: The Finale” (available on Netflix), a 2019 biographical drama set in 1964 San Francisco.

There is no place in America, the melting pot of so many wonderful cultures, for racial discrimination; it is high time for this to end. I apologize for taking this avenue to express my personal views.

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT

By Dr. Heesoo Oh, Class of 2005 Dear Alumni and Friends, I hope everyone is doing well and is staying safe and healthy during this unprecedented and challenging time.

The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly forced us all to adjust to a new normal. During the shelter-in-place (SIP) for three months, we had to rapidly move from in-person to virtual learning. As a result, we completed all didactic courses online for the spring quarter during the SIP. Our residents utilized virtual consultations to continue patient care, ensuring that patients in active appliances were okay. I would like to thank all faculty members who spent many hours learning WebEx, delivering online classes, and helping us navigate this tumultuous time.

Since June 15th, we have safely resumed our orthodontic clinic.

We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Joorok Park as our Clinic Director. Dr. Park has invested a tremendous amount of time and effort in planning and organizing clinical operations to enable a safe reopening of the clinic. He will provide more details on our successful clinic resumption story and new clinic policies in his report. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to Dr. Park, our clinic faculty, our assistants, and our front staff for their dedication to our residents’ education and patient care. This pandemic has truly tested all of us, but we have proven that we can overcome any challenge by supporting one another, remaining focused on our purpose, and staying positive as we all work toward common goals.

When I think of all of the things that are going to change in the world after the COVID-19 pandemic, orthodontics and how we practice and educate our residents will not be immune. As an institution, we have been a leader in implementing digital orthodontics and embracing new technology. Taking place in a digital era, COVID-19 has forced clinicians and patients online at an accelerated pace. We are transitioning to a much more virtual environment, which I see as a lasting change.

We have participated in virtual conferences to meet renowned experts and successfully incorporated virtual new patient consultations to minimize trips to the clinic. Though we are in the midst of a crisis, it has afforded us an opportunity to build long-lasting transformational change. I am excited to see our school lead the dental profession and orthodontic specialty in advancing the field and improving patient care.

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT (CONT’D) Amidst this pandemic, we celebrated Dr. Art Dugoni’s special birthday on June 29th. In honor of his 95th birthday, we shared greetings and participated in a birthday sing-a-long. I would like to thank Dr. Dugoni for being our mentor and role model for helping us create such a humanistic environment for our school. He has meant so much to our orthodontic family over the years.

Our graduating residents, the Class of 2020, will have their last and busiest quarter before graduation. Playing catch up after missing 3 months of clinic time, they are seeing patients all day, while also working diligently on their graduation requirements, 10-year case presentations, ABO mock exams, finished case displays, thesis defense presentations, master theses, and case reports. The Class of 2020 successfully passed the ABO written exam in June and will take the scenario-based exam next year, which will be held virtually at a local testing center. I am confident that they will all ace the exam!

The Class of 2021 demonstrated strong academic and clinical knowledge during their comprehensive virtual oral examinations at the end of their first year of residency. They are now transitioning to a more clinically focused 2nd year curriculum and will be devoting more time to their research projects.

I would like to welcome our Class of 2022. They started their orthodontic residency program during uncertain times, but I hope they know that they are part of an orthodontic family that will support them as best we can to ensure that they have a residency experience that is educational, fulfilling, rewarding, enjoyable. You can meet them in the INTRODUCING THE CLASS OF 2022 section!

Finally, we want to continue to strengthen our alumni network, especially during this challenging time. With well over 200 alumni, it is certainly time to try to bring everyone together to create a greater sense of community. In light of preparing to celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2021, I would like to hear your ideas and suggestions. Please feel free to share your thoughts with me via email at hoh@pacific.edu.

CLINIC DIRECTOR’S REPORT

By Dr. Joorok Park, Class of 2008 The Redmond Family Graduate Orthodontics clinic was closed since mid-March for three months due to the shelter-in-place order by the San Francisco City during the Covid-19 pandemic. The directors of the orthodontics department implemented the three-phase contingency plan immediately. During the clinic closure (Phase I), we implemented virtual consultation sessions for our patients in active treatment to monitor treatment progress. Only patients with emergencies were admitted to the clinic for emergency service provided by Dr. Park.

Fortunately, approximately 1/3 of our active patients had Invisalign clear aligners, and we were able to make meaningful treatment progress by mailing out additional aligners after monthly virtual consultations.

On June 15, the orthodontics clinic resumed clinical service (Phase II) on a limited basis and we were the first clinic to resume patient care within the dental school. During the Phase II period, the dental school kept the building occupancy to 50%, so residents were divided into two groups who alternated working in the clinic. Residents, faculty, and staff were provided with adequate PPE, including KN95 masks for all clinical procedures and N95 respirators for aerosol generating procedures (AGP). Prior to all AGP, we require the patient to have a Covid-19 PCR test as recommended by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Multiple HEPA filtrations, an external suction unit and HVE were used during the AGP to minimize aerosol spread.

We had a successful resumption story — we have been able to serve over 50 patients per day while keeping the patient load at 25% of normal, after restructuring clinic operations. The clinic hours were extended to open early at 7:45 am and close late at 6:30 pm for a month and patient appointments were staggered. At each hour only 6 out of 24 clinic chairs were occupied.

I appreciate the clinic faculty, staff, and residents for pulling together to safely serve our patients.

The RDA team’s strong support was instrumental in making each appointment productive and safe.

Within one month of clinic resumption, most of our active patients received proper care.

Due to the reduced capacity in the clinic, residents focused on providing treatment to active patients while all new patient exams were done virtually. A team of a faculty, a second-year resident, and a treatment coordinator met the patient virtually in a Zoom conference call to review patient’s concerns and occlusion, and provided treatment recommendation. We thank Drs. Maryse Aubert, Jetson Lee, and William Cole for supervising the virtual patient exams. Since June, we were able to serve more than 100 patients through these virtual patient exams, which helped to provide healthy number of new patients for both second-year and first-year residents. Residents also utilized the virtual technology to complete their patient transfers in June and July.

We are proud to be one of the first university-based orthodontics clinic to resume clinical service safely in a productive manner. Our residents, staff, and faculty showed that we can work together to overcome many challenges posed by the Coronavirus. I truly believe that the Dugoni orthodontics residency team will continue to serve our patients and the community well during this difficult time.

CLASS OF 2020 FUTURE PLANS

Mona Awadi plans to return to Kuwait to practice. She is looking forward to being closer to her family and friends.

Chantal Hakim plans to work in sunny Los Angeles. She’s excited to apply all she has learned at University if the Pacific.

Tim Howarth plans to practice Orthodontics. Locations TBD. Andrew Levin will be entering private practice in Huntington Beach, California.

Ivan Lo hopes to be working in private practice in his hometown Vancouver, British Columbia Canada.

Joseph Phillips hopes to work in private practice in north county San Diego to be close to family.

Thomas Roblee plans to join his father’s practice in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Erin Walker plans to return to Westlake Village, CA to practice orthodontics. She is looking forward to returning to her home town where her family and fiancé, a fellow UOP dental grad, live.

Tim Yu plans to work in private practice in Orange County, California.

INTRODUCING THE CLASS OF 2022 Kyle Cuenin is originally from Danville, CA. He received a bachelor of science degree in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at UCLA and his DDS from the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.

He is looking forward to continuing his education at UOP and living in San Francisco. In his free time, he enjoys mountain biking, climbing, skiing, and golf.

Bianca Lau was born and raised in San Francisco, California. She completed University of the Pacific’s accelerated dental program, which entailed 2 years of undergraduate studies in Stockton and 3 years of dental school in San Francisco. Her interests include working out, traveling, making travel videos, drawing, and baking/cooking.

Eric Le was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Aiea, Hawaii. He attended Santa Clara University where he was recruited to play golf and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Economics. Following his undergraduate studies, he attended dental school at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and graduated this past June. His interests include golfing, enjoying nature, going to the beach, and trying new cuisines. He is extremely excited and honored to continue his education at Dugoni.

Kyra Lee was born and raised in the Bay Area, growing up in the small city of Piedmont in the East Bay. She completed her undergraduate studies in Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley and then went on to obtain her dental degree at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at USC. After working in private practice for five years, she decided to return to school for further training in orthodontics. She is excited to be a part of the UOP Dugoni family and in her free time enjoys hiking, running marathons, spending time cooking with family, and reading.

INTODUCING THE CLASS OF 2022 (CONT’D) Mojan Mirnia was born and raised in Iran. She moved to California to pursue her undergraduate studies in Biology at UCSD and later earned her DDS from UCLA. Mojan is excited to be receiving her Orthodontic education at UOP and explore San Francisco. In her free time, she enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

Heeyon Suh was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. She received her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, earned her DDS degree, and completed an orthodontic residency at Seoul National University.

She later moved to San Francisco with her family. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family.

Daniel Voorhees was born and raised in Austin, Texas. He graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science in biology and went on to obtain his DDS from Baylor College of Dentistry in 2018. Following dental school, he entered residency in the UCLA Orofacial Pain program, and graduated in June 2020. In his spare time, Daniel prefers exploring outdoors with family and friends.

Gabrielle Wainwright was born in Paris, France and raised in San Mateo, California. She completed her undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley, earning a BS in Molecular Environmental Biology in 2017. She obtained her DDS at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2020. During her time in dental school she was involved in various extracurricular activities, including a service trip to Guatemala and research in craniofacial genetics.

Gabrielle is the first dentist in her family and is very excited to pursue a career in orthodontics. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring everything the Bay Area has to offer, and loves to travel to France to see her family.

Serene Chee, Class of 1990 Greetings from Singapore! I can’t believe it has been 30 years since we left UOP! Upon returning to Singapore, I practiced orthodontics out of two dental group practices (got married & had 3 kids) before venturing out on my own in 2000. I took over my late father’s dental clinic and have been there since, currently working three and a half days a week. Still enjoying orthodontics, but looking forward to working less & travelling more…. in a couple of years.

It has been challenging but rewarding, balancing life for the last 30 years with husband KW and my three children who are now young adults. Nicole is a physician specializing in endocrinology at the National University Hospital in Singapore. Glendon and Michele are both at local universities studying chemical engineering and urban studies, respectively. Both of them spent time in United States between 2018 and 2019; Glendon for his third year at University of California, Berkeley and Michele at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York for the fall semester in 2019. They will both be entering their final year at university next month.

Since 2008, I have been making annual trips to Nepal for medical dental missions. Our team of doctors, dentists and helpers travel to villages located two hours out of the capital Kathmandu to provide basic dental treatment, mainly extractions…. not orthodontics! It has been an extremely humbling and enriching experience, but is currently on hold with the global pandemic. Hope to resume in the near future!

KEEPING IN TOUCH (CONT’D) Bob Dustin, Class of 1990 Vivy and I are both working at our home office part time. The only staff we have is a part time cleaning lady, so it’s a very small operation at this point. No staff drama! Vivy loves gardening!

She is out there all the time.

Michael Dustin is a Captain in the Army. He and Hannah got married Easter Sunday this year.

We were going to meet in Holly, Michigan for the wedding, but all military travel was cancelled due to the pandemic. So, they got an internet preacher buddy to marry them on the Alaskan coast via Facetime. $67-dollar wedding! (That’s for preacher, a veil, and gas).

Johnny Dustin is a junior at UConn in Storrs, Connecticut. He is majoring in Applied Mathematics. Currently home for Covid Summer. Quite helpful on the pool and kitchen!

Vivy loves having a private driver now, just like the rich people.

I haven’t been skiing in years. We got into windsurfing off Aruba every year for about 10 to 12 years. Then the kids got into competitive swimming and we pretty much stopped traveling, except for meets and tournaments. I got into competitive pistol shooting, shotguns, hunting, and am currently trying to run the Forests and Lands Committee at 230-acre Camp Fire Club of America. I have harvested 3 deer so far: one with a bow in Montana, one with a shotgun in Verbank, NY, and one with a .308 rifle in Cochecton, NY. My goal this fall/winter is to get a deer with a crossbow here in Greenwich. Vivy is an excellent venison cook!

Other than a few patients per week, it’s a lot of gardening and home repair. hope you are all well.

KEEPING IN TOUCH (CONT’D) Frank Helm, Class of 1990

Wow, 30 years. It is sad to say I haven’t seen my classmates in many years. I have been practicing across the Bay in Oakland since graduating. Right now, I am seeing patients literally 1 patient at a time, 3.5 days a week, in this Covid world we are all trying to survive.

Michele and I have been married now 34 years and have 4 offspring. Alex was a baby back in residency (I used to have a picture of me changing his diaper on Dr. Poulton’s desk).

He is now 32, lives in San Francisco, works for Waymo as a recruiter, is not married but actively dating. Graham is 30, lives in Pacific Heights with his girlfriend, and practices employment law. Amelia is 27, just moved out of our house in Piedmont, works for a lacrosse supply company in Emeryville, sort of dating which is hard to do these days. Heidi is 16, a senior at Piedmont High, driving, and so excited to be distance learning again (not).

We are all healthy and trying to be good these days but miss traveling. We did all go to my brother’s wedding last September at a chateau just north of Lyon, France. Michele and I were able to go to Vegas this past February just prior to the shut-down. More recently we have been able to do day trips to Napa, Sonoma, Tahoe, and even San Francisco. In April we did “SF in a Day.” No traffic into the City and hit the Painted Ladies, Baker Beach, Lombard Street, Fisherman’s Wharf (takeout Irish coffees from the Buena Vista), lunch at Washington Square Park, Coit Tower and finished off with ice cream on Filmore St. Parking galore. Hope all is well and stay safe.

KEEPING IN TOUCH (CONT’D) Manal Abu Al-Melh, Class of 2010 It has been a long time since graduation, and I miss everything about the friendly UOP family and the beautiful city of San Francisco. I am very grateful for the exceptional mentorship, the outstanding orthodontic training and the unique learning experience I received during the residency program. After graduating from the orthodontic residency program in 2010, I moved back to my country (Kuwait), and was appointed an assistant professor at Kuwait University Faculty of Dentistry (KUFoD). At KUFoD, I am involved in full-time didactic teaching, research activities, treating orthodontic patients at the faculty practice, and supervising orthodontic cases treated by the undergraduate dental students.

In addition to my full-time duty at KUFoD, I recently joined a private practice (Dazzle) that focuses on orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry.

As a mother of three children, Manar (10 years old, born in San Francisco), Abdulrazzaq (7 years old, born in Kuwait) and Dalal (4 years old, born in Kuwait), it could be challenging to manage both academic and private careers, but my growing interest in the field of orthodontics urges me to work harder and seek for rewarding opportunities.

KEEPING IN TOUCH (CONT’D) Kimberly Mahood, Class of 2010 It seems crazy to think that it has been 10 years since we completed our residency program! My husband Peter and I are still residing in San Francisco and we celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary later this year.

In April 2014, we welcomed our daughter Avery and she has been keeping us busy ever since. Since graduation, I have been an associate in private practice in the Bay Area, with the last 6 years practicing in San Francisco. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to continue to teach part-time at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in the Department of Orthodontics and to stay connected and involved with the faculty, staff, residents, and dental and orthodontic alumni. I continue to enjoy cheering for the Golden State Warriors, traveling to visit friends and family, frequent trips to Disneyland, Legoland, and all places kid related.

Matthew Moadel, Class of 2010 Since graduation, I moved back to Los Angeles where I have been practicing for 10 years. I partnered up with a pediatric dentist and opened a pedo/ortho practice. I’ve been trying to travel in my free time as much as I can.

Adrian Vogt, Class of 1994 Retired from practice and from teaching, Adrian has kept busy with his passion for flying. Although the pandemic placed his travel and flying lessons on hold for a while, he soloed on July making three full stop landings on a short (2400 feet) runway at Palo Alto in a Cessna 172.

You can watch his solo on youtu.be/ GYpfSjrB2xA. Soon he will be undertaking the fun and challenging cross-country flight portion of his training and quest for his pilot’s license.

By Dr. Steven Dugoni, Class of 1981 Past President, American Board of Orthodontics Congratulations to our graduates Marcus Kai ‘09, Dong Heon Oh ‘11 and Jeffrey Tinloy ’09 on becoming board-certified passing the clinical examination in February 2020. Our faculty are extremely proud of our graduates’ high level of participation in the clinical examination.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the ABO written examination testing centers offered limited appointment availability, directly impacting the examination originally scheduled on April 7, 2020. Identifying an appropriate solution to this problem was the top priority as this examination is often used as an exit examination for many orthodontic programs.

In response, the examination was postponed to June 2020, with two separate testing dates offered. The administration of the examination was modified to include a live online proctored written examination, overseen by Scantron and Examity. Examination content and test reliability did not change.

The 2020 written examination was administered to 409 examinees. We are very proud that all of our Pacific residents passed the ABO written examination. Once the written examination is successfully completed, it never expires.

The clinical exam format also changed because of COVID-19 concerns with the testing center in St. Louis and air travel.

The clinical examinations scheduled in 2020 and 2021 will now take place at Scantron Testing Centers throughout the United States and Canada. Travel to St. Louis will not be required.

This decision was made with serious deliberation and evaluation of multiple options. The goal was to find the best way to balance honoring our commitments to exam candidates and maintaining the integrity of the exam, while protecting the health and safety of all participants. The clinical exam will continue to be administered in a scenario-based format with the same exam components and testing criteria. The validity of the exam will be maintained with changes only made to accommodate how answers are submitted.

I continue to work as an ABO consultant with the written examination committee helping to develop new questions for the written examination every year and the ABO directors and consultants just completed two days of virtual meetings developing new written examination questions.

IN MEMORIUM

Dr. James P. Dias ‘55 passed away on March 16, 2020. Dr. Dias served on our Orthodontic faculty prior to the creation of our post-graduate program. He practiced for 25 years in Los Gatos. He is survived by his wife, Susan, and three children with his first wife.
