COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REPORT As we continue to navigate through this pandemic, life is beginning to get back to some sort of normality, although the new normal certainly looks different. We were able to have our first in-person event for our alumni chapter since the pandemic began last year.

On Friday, September 17, we gathered for the Arthur A. Dugoni Graduation Symposium and Dinner. After a day of presentations from Oregon Health Sciences University Chair Dr. Laura Iwasaki and the graduating residents, the program concluded with dinner at the iconic City Club of San Francisco. We welcomed back six members of the Class of 2020 since we were not able to have an in-person event last year. Proof of vaccination was required, attendees were required to wear masks except while eating and speakers were even required to keep their masks on at the podium. Next year’s speaker will be Dr. Larry Tadlock, department head and program director from Texas A&M and a past president of the ABO. The PCSO Annual Session scheduled in scenic Portland, Oregon was canceled due to the changing nature of the pandemic and a surge of cases in Oregon. Additional restrictions from the County Health Department made it unrealistic and not feasible to gather such a large group. The PCSO felt this was the responsible thing to do. Dr. Martin Palomo, director of orthodontics at Case Western Reserve is our scheduled speaker for the Frederick T. Lectureship during the Annual Alumni meeting weekend March 4-5, 2022 at the historic Fairmont Hotel.

COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REPORT (CONT.) The 2023 speaker will be Dr. Lucia Cervidanes from the University of Michigan, whose expertise is in 3D imaging. The 2023 meeting will feature an all-women speaker list. This year’s AAO Annual Session has moved from Honolulu to Miami Beach because Hawaii could not guarantee us space at the Convention Center. So we move from an area of the country with among the lowest level of infections to Florida, which has one of the country’s highest. That does not make much sense to me! Their convention center was even once converted to a 450-bed hospital during the pandemic! How many infections are the AAO willing to accept? When the AAO pulled out of Honolulu, the newspapers reported a potential loss of their largest meeting of the year with 17,000-plus attendees. I am hopeful that attendees are smart enough to be safe, mask and socially distance. Miami-Dade County has a very high test-positivity rate and is at a very high COVID risk level. Let’s say that 1% of attendees come down with breakthrough infections; that would mean 170 attendees getting infected! And that may be a low estimate as the Omicron variant is highly transmissible.
Miami Beach Convention Center
InterContinental Hotel
I understand that everyone is itching to hold an in-person conference, but the mayor of Miami Beach welcomed the AAO with open arms because of the financial windfall for the city and because there are few COVID-19 restrictions in the state of Florida — not necessarily because it’s safe enough yet. To be fair, when the situation did not work out in Honolulu, there was less than a year before the 2022 AAO and it usually takes much longer to secure a site for such a large meeting. To the AAO leadership, “Follow the PCSO and do the responsible thing; cancel and go virtual!” If the meeting still goes on as planned, hopefully, boosters will provide us with further protection and the situation improves in Florida by May.
Our 50th Anniversary Celebration committee has been ramping up activities as we are less than 18 months from this momentous event. Our subcommittees include continuing education, dinner venue, dinner program, sponsorship and scholarship. The continuing education program will be held at the school and we have secured the Grand Ballroom facilities at the InterContinental Hotel next door for the dinner. We will be inviting past and current faculty and staff to the dinner; several prominent faculty have already saved the date. 2

EDITORS’ NOTE After a decade of being an editor for the Trident, Dr. Jetson Lee passed the torch over to us: Katherine Kieu (Class of 2012) and Jennifer Yau (Class of 2015). We would like to thank Dr. Lee for his unparalleled dedication to our orthodontic program and alumni chapter. Serving as co-editors for this spring issue, we are flabbergasted that he was able to do it alone all these years while wearing so many other hats. Though he is no longer the editor, Dr. Lee will continue to serve as the Committee Chair of our orthodontic alumni chapter. Once again, thank you Dr. Lee for your generosity in giving back to the Pacific orthodontic community! As new editors, we would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce ourselves. Katherine was born and raised in Orange County (CA), but has lived in the Bay Area since attending UCSF for dental school in 2005. She is currently building a more tech-enabled, mobile orthodontic practice that leverages collaborations with several pediatric and general dentists in San Mateo County. Her hobbies include reading, writing and trying new foods. Jennifer is a South Bay Area native who grew up in Saratoga. After obtaining her dental degree from UCLA, she returned to the Bay Area to complete her orthodontic residency at the Dugoni School. In addition to owning a private practice in Los Gatos, she also serves as an associate professor in our orthodontic program. Her hobbies include eating, hiking and dancing. We are excited to be co-editors and aspire to maintain the level of quality that our alumni have grown accustomed to over the years. Our goal is to continue to provide a means for our past graduates to stay connected and be reminded that they are part of the Pacific orthodontic family. Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2022! Warmest Regards, Katherine and Jennifer

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT Dear Alumni and Friends, Happy New Year and well wishes for a healthy, productive, and successful 2022. Despite COVID challenges experienced over the past two years, our department still saw many successes and significant achievements in 2021. With rapid innovations and advances in digital technology in healthcare, these are exciting times for orthodontics as a specialty. I want to briefly highlight our progress this past year and share what we will be working on in the upcoming year. Faculty hiring: Promising and talented faculty are critical to our educational programs’ continued strength and success. In January of this year, we welcomed a new full-time faculty member, Dr. Mark Vaughan, who trained and practiced in the UK. (His bio appears later in this issue.) I am excited that he will be bringing his extensive private practice experience and knowledge in managing complex multidisciplinary orthodontic treatment. Along with our two outstanding junior faculty, Drs. James Chen and Jonas Bianchi, Dr. Vaughan will significantly advance our effort to build interprofessional and interdisciplinary collaborations with other institutions and departments. Clinical Excellence: Under the leadership of Dr. Park, our digital orthodontics workflow from intraoral scanning to 3D printing is well integrated into the clinic. We are currently utilizing various 3D virtual simulation software, 3D printed custom bracket systems and in-house aligner systems. We are also excited about launching our Sleep Clinic for delivering oral appliances when patients are diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Audrey Yoon, the director of our Sleep Medicine course and a clinical faculty in the Sleep Medicine department at Stanford, will oversee the Sleep Clinic on Friday mornings. Newly updated department and clinic webpages: We recently released our revamped graduate program and clinic website. The website has an updated description of our department, short bios for our residents, links to faculty web pages, and a link to an up-to-date listing of all graduate courses. Please check it out at dental.pacific.edu/orthoprogram and provide us with your feedback. CODA site visit: We are busy preparing for the accreditation site visit scheduled for October 25-27, 2022 and will conduct a mock site visit on April 28. It has been a great opportunity to critically review all aspects of the program to ensure our program’s effectiveness. Increasing scholastic activities: We are extremely proud of the caliber of and work produced by our faculty and residents. (You’ll read more about them later in this issue.) The number of resident Master’s theses successfully published in peer-reviewed journals has significantly increased over the last two years. Our research effort in digital technology, artificial intelligence, and machine learning has been recognized nationally by being awarded one of the AAO’s 2022 resident research awards. Dr. Ali Ghowsi (Class of 2021) is one of four recipients of the prestigious Thomas M. Graber Award and is invited to speak at the AAO’s Annual Session in May in Miami. This is a significant accomplishment since our program is a 27-month residency program, which is shorter than many other programs. Two

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT other Class of 2021 graduates, Dr. Laura Chew and Dr. Tae Keong (Cindy) Kim, were also selected to present their research papers for the Oral Research Presentation at the AAO meeting. In addition, our faculty will well represent our program at the 2022 AAO meeting. In addition to Dr. Steve Dugoni being co-chair of the Scientific Program, Drs. Sandra Tai, Bella Shen Garnett, Audrey Yoon, HyeonShik Hwang and I are presenting. Class of 2021’s Graduation Celebration: the event was held in person at the City Club San Francisco and was a huge success. We invited the Class of 2020 since they had a virtual graduation ceremony due to the global pandemic. It was an absolute joy to have both classes together to congratulate them on their significant milestones. We also celebrated all nine members of the Class of 2020 becoming board-certified orthodontists. We are so proud of our graduates! Inspired by this, all members of the Class of 2021 are going to take the ABO Clinical Exam this February, and I expect to hear great news again. This could likely become a new tradition for the department. Ortho’s 50th Anniversary Celebration: 2023 will mark the 50th anniversary of our first graduating class (Class of 1973). Details about our celebration plans are below. We have also launched a fundraising campaign to honor and fulfill Dr. Art Dugoni’s dream to provide scholarships for every student and resident. Our department’s two endowed resident scholarships — Art Dugoni and Robert Boyd — have reached over $1.3 million thus far. Our first-year residents, the Class of 2023, became the first recipients of the Endowed Scholarship. Please visit dentalgifts.org if you would like to support our scholarship fundraising campaign. As we look back over 50 years, it is amazing to see how much has been accomplished. With a halfcentury of history and well over 200 alumni, it is critical for us to bring everyone together to create a greater sense of community and to generate support for the future of our program. With your continued support, we have experienced and achieved countless successes, and I would like to deeply thank all members of our Dugoni School orthodontic family. We are excited for what’s to come in 2022, and wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and prosperous new year! Yours cordially, Heesoo Oh Professor and Chair, Department of Orthodontics save the date:

keeping in touch Jennifer Drew Mathisen (1992): 2021 was a big year in my household. Our daughter, Megan, graduated from Western Washington University and was hoping for a stint in the Peace Corps. Unfortunately, COVID derailed those plans as the Peace Corps is now uncertain when they will be able to send volunteers out again. For now, she has decided to stay in Bellingham. Our son, Sean, graduated from high school and is now attending UC Irvine pursuing a chemical engineering degree. Our nest is now empty. Brian Way (1992): What have I been up to since graduation? Professionally speaking, we returned to the Toronto area after graduation. I practised solo until 2010, then sold my practice and worked for another 10 years in a group practice setting. I had been thinking about “hanging it up” for a while, then Covid came along and I was sure it was time, so at the end of 2020 I retired from dentistry. Personally, I have been married to Laura since just before my residency Jennifer Drew Mathisen and began (coming up on 32 years). I have a daughter, Whitney, (nearly family. 25!), who is in graduate school herself in the field of education. For fun, I enjoy playing tennis at two local clubs, and watching tennis. As a family, we attended the last US Open before Covid happened! I also road bike almost daily. We live in the country, so there are lots of backroads and trails for me to rack up the kilometres (not miles, we are in Canada!), have fun and stay fit. We also love to travel and try new things. I keep in touch with my classmates Janice and Jennifer, and look forward to hearing from the others. It’s hard to believe it has been thirty years since my time at Pacific, which we have such fond memories of.

keeping in touch (cont.) Sarah Chung (2012): I am currently enjoying working three days a week in Santa Barbara. I celebrated 13th wedding anniversary last year. Sam and I have two wonderful children, Elliot (8) and Elise (6).
Mihee Hong (2012): I returned to Korea on January 19, 2013. I worked at Catholic University Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital from 2013 to 2016. Now, I have been working for the department of orthodontics, Kyungpook National University since 2017. This school is known for lingual orthodontics and “absoanchor” (microimplants), and I am going to add new trends such as artificial intelligence for orthodontics and 3D digital orthodontics. In addition, I am steadily learning and making friends from Korean Association Orthodontists, Korean Cleft lip and Palate Association, Korean Society of Digital Orthodontists, and Korean Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Personal life! I’ve been enjoying pilates lately. All of my family members are doing well; my husband and I have 3 kids: Heather, Kelly and Jimmy. However, my mother, who took care of my children during my UOP residency, passed away a year ago. I miss her very much. My husband is a strong supporter of my children and me. Heather and Kelly are enjoying their college lives and Jimmy, the youngest, recently received an admission letter from one of the Korean dental schools. I’m looking forward to it.

keeping in touch (cont.) Kiri Herchold Yee (2012): The last ten years have been busy and exciting! Brian and I celebrated our ten year anniversary last fall. We have three children: Cosi (6), Palmer (4), and Pierson (2). Our family lives in San Francisco. While raising children in the city during Covid has had its challenges, we have made some of our most enduring memories as a family over the past couple years. I have been an associate in Mill Valley working with Golnaz Ashraf (UOP Ortho 2008) since 2015. I love going to work and love the people I work with. Katherine Kieu (2012): I can’t believe how quickly ten years go by! After graduating, I stayed in the Bay Area and worked as an associate for an orthodontic office in San Mateo between 2013 to 2021. Since spring 2021, I have been building a more tech-enabled, mobile orthodontic practice that leverages collaborations with several pediatric and general dentists in San Mateo County. I am fortunate that this career path enables me to strengthen professional relationships with aligned partners and spend more quality time with my family. Though the pandemic has presented its share of challenges, my husband and I are blessed that our son, Kyler, is growing into a precocious three-year-old with a kind heart, great sense of humor, and keen love for animals. Eddie and I are both thrilled that Kyler shares our passion for reading, as reflected by his stacks of children’s books that number in the hundreds. This past Halloween, Eddie and I celebrated our six-year anniversary by dressing up as Paw Patrol characters per Kyler’s request. Last Christmas, we enjoyed watching Kyler leave out brownies and chocolate milk for Santa and gummies for his reindeer. We look forward to reconnecting with everyone in 2022!

Second Year Residents’ Report By Bianca Lau ’22
The Class of 2022 cannot believe that we are more than halfway through residency! Time flies when you’re having fun! These past two quarters have been dedicated to finishing transfer cases along with our own cases. We have been reviewing our final cases analysis with faculty to gain a better understanding of our treatment outcomes. We have also been working closely with the first years to help them with treatment planning and transitioning into the clinic. We have also been spending more time on research in preparation for our master’s thesis defenses at the end of the year. As the ABO board exams approach us quickly, we have been taking Dr. Yau’s ABO review course and studying together as a class.

Last July, we had the privilege of attending our first in-person conference, GORP, along with the first-year residents. We also safely celebrated Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays with the Orthodontic Department. The pandemic has truly given our class a unique experience and we are grateful that we have had the support of all the faculty (old and new), the staff and our co-residents. The Class of 2022 hopes to finish strong and to become the best orthodontists we can be!

First Year Residents’ Report By Dr. Kika Masunaga and Dr. Parisa Mortazavi ’23
Hello from the Dugoni School Ortho’s first all-women resident class in its 50-year history! We have traveled from around the world to be here, and we could not be happier! Thank you so much to all faculty, staff, admin and fellow residents who have contributed to our warm welcome into the Dugoni family. As many of our readers may recall, the first six months of residency was filled with adjusting to a new environment, learning new concepts and making new connections. There were many highlights, including bonding brackets on each other’s teeth in our Typodont Course, treatment planning in the resident room, starting orthodontic treatment on our own patients, wearing matching Hawaiian shirts on Aloha Fridays and enjoying various social outings with our faculty and big sibs.

In October, we were excited to host the Class of 2024 orthodontic resident candidates at the for in-person interviews as well as a social event. We look forward to welcoming the new class in just six months! Our first two quarters have had their ups and downs, and with COVID-19, we have had to be incredibly flexible and adapt on a moment’s notice. We are so grateful for the support of our faculty that has allowed us to have the most ideal educational experience given the circumstances. We look forward to continuing our orthodontic journeys alongside one another and making more memories!
