As you may recall, we just celebrated our 125th anniversary since our founding, an occasion that prompted reflection on our past, our achievements and what comes next. I am excited about the possibilities in our future and the many advancements the Dugoni School family will make in the decades ahead. Think of this report as a snapshot from the first of the next 125

SERVICES Helping People Lead Healthy Lives Thousands of people from across Northern California call the Dugoni School of Dentistry their home for oral healthcare. In addition to the school’s San Francisco clinic location, the school also serves patients at its Union City Dental Care Center in Union City, home to the Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program. COMMUNITY OUTREACH
27th Annual Senior Smiles and Wellness Health Fair was a successful collaboration between Pacific’s dental, audiology, physical therapy and social work programs, plus — for the first time — UC Berkeley School of Optometry
Dental Hygiene outreach at Franklin Elementary school in Modesto served nearly 500 kids!
Union City Dental Care Center’s outreach events included Give Special Kids a Smile and Give Veterans a Smile in partnership with Southern Alameda County Dental Society
Free dental and audiology screenings on campus in November served military veterans
The Dugoni School repeatedly stepped up to provide COVID-19 vaccines to the community in partnership with the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Over the last academic year, our volunteers provided 890+ vaccine doses during 27 clinics held on campus, including special events for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) outreach included events at Kain Na Tenderloin TNDC Community Food Service, Gordon J. Lau Elementary School in Chinatown and SF City Impact Elementary School in the Tenderloin
COVID-19 Vaccinations Clinics on Campus
Dugoni School dental students were also among the first in the nation to be able to administer COVID-19 vaccines to the public as part of an expanded scope of practice.

Transforming Dental Education through VR and AR Simulation
Emergency simulator — to give students critical experience treating emergency medical situations
Dugoni School faculty are collaborating with the Cube, Pacific’s innovation and technology center in Stockton, to create groundbreaking virtual and augmented reality simulations that could change the future of dental education. Pilot projects led by Dr. Jesse West Manton, Mustafa Radif, Dr. Bernadette Fa, Dr. Gordon Lai and colleagues include:
Virtual reality spaces — for students to practice delivering local anesthesia and explore 3D views of head and neck anatomy to identify nerves, muscles and bones
Augmented reality application — to help students learn about root canal anatomy

In the last five years, approximately 25% of Dugoni School graduates have become specialists—of this group, about half enter specialty programs immediately upon graduation, and the other half embark on these programs as alumni applicants. In addition, each year 25% of our DDS/IDS students are accepted into AEGD and GPR programs upon graduation.

To help improve oral health care, the Center for Innovation and Translation will convene internal and external experts to translate clinical research and develop innovative practices.
The Dugoni School’s Bay Area location puts it in the innovative heart of many fields, including biotechnology, big data and AI.

Publications from faculty at the Dugoni School continue their steady upward trend. Last year (2021), faculty in the school published 87 articles in peer-reviewed journals (according to the Scopus database), which have already been cited by external sources 219 times (as of August 1, 2022). This is a significant increase from the previous year (67 articles published), which was already higher than usual for our faculty.

Alumni Traditions
A Delicious New Tradition: Friday Morning Donuts. When the Alumni Association board of directors are in the building for a quarterly meeting, there will be pastries offered to all students (and everyone else!) by alumni volunteers.

Improving Professional Skills through Continuing Education
1,196 dental professionals expanded their skills through courses offered by the Dugoni School’s Division of Continuing Dental Education, including 5 live-interactive webinars, 4 hands-on workshops, 9 in person lecture classes and 3 certificate programs.

LEADERSHIP AND ACCOLADES
Dean Nadershahi stepped up to a new national leadership role in dental education as the American Dental Education Association’s board chair for 2022-23. He is also one of 17 health care leaders chosen by Governor Gavin Newsom to serve on the state of California’s new Health Workforce Education and Training Council.

The Dugoni School’s historic fundraising campaign “Building Our Future, Embracing Our Legacy” has reached $69.3 million, surpassing the original $65 million goal. This momentous achievement is the largest fundraising campaign ever for the Dugoni School and among the largest campaigns of any dental school in the country.
PHILANTHROPIC IMPACT
The philanthropic response to our campaign will continue to positively impact the school for many generations. Gifts and pledges support student scholarships, innovative programs, cutting-edge facilities, faculty recruitment and retention and patient care. They also grow our Dugoni School annual fund, which provides the unrestricted funds and flexibility necessary to propel our great institution forward.

Pacific Gives is a 24-hour day of giving where alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends unite to show their commitment and support our students and residents. Held April 26-27, this year’s dental school beneficiaries were the Dugoni School Annual Fund, Kids in the Klinic Endowment and the Dental Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship.
Foundation and Grant Support
Pacific Gives: $220K raised for the Dugoni School from 142 donors
The Pacific Dental Services Health Care Collaborative is an exciting new project that will bring integrated medical-dental services to the Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento through the creation of an innovative teaching and patient care facility that will be one of the first of its kind at a university. The initiative is being supported by a lead $4 million gift from Steve and Pam Thorne and a $250,000 Access to Care grant from the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation.
The Delta Dental Community Care Foundation awarded the Dugoni School a grant to support the patient emergency fund, military veterans’ oral health care and planning for a dental hygiene mobile education program.

Thanks to a gift from the WITH Foundation, the Dugoni School is expanding ways to train oral healthcare providers to care for underserved people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) from a wide range of backgrounds. The school received a grant designed to support care for patients with IDD who are Black, Indigenous or people of color through new training activities for providers.
