YEAR in REVIEW
REFLECT and RENEW
11 COUNTRIES REPRESENTED Armenia, Bangladesh, Egypt, India Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia and South Korea
Our 2020-2021 Academic Year in Review offers us an opportunity to reflect and celebrate some of the achievements of the past year—a year unlike any the Dugoni School had faced in generations. It was an extraordinary time with a worldwide pandemic, a global recession, a turbulent election season and social and racial injustices felt throughout our society. Each of us faced personal and professional challenges while also remaining committed to our school’s purpose of helping people lead healthy lives. I am so proud of the resiliency shown by our students, residents, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters. The pages that follow highlight just some of their many accomplishments over the last academic year spanning July 2020 to June 2021. What have we learned during the last academic year that can make us even stronger? There are many lessons, but in my commencement message I touched on some “ABCs” for our post-pandemic world:
A – ACCESS: We have learned the importance of access to quality health care and access to this great profession. B – BELONGING: Our humanistic education is based on providing an environment where everyone belongs and is part of our success.
C – COMPASSION: Empathy means that you feel what another person is feeling, but compassion is the willingness to relieve the suffering of others by taking action in caring for one another. Access, belonging and compassion helped us take care of the vulnerable in our communities and will help us emerge even stronger in the days and months to come. History had its eyes on the Dugoni School family over the last year. Thank you for rising to the challenge. Thank you for making history. I am grateful for your important work and the lives that you touch. Sincerely,
Nader A. Nadershahi, DDS, MBA, EdD Dean
SUPPORTING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE A YEAR FILLED WITH FLEXIBILITY, CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENTS AND RESOURCES TO SUPPORT STUDENT SUCCESS
STUDENT SERVICES AND WELLNESS The Student Wellness Center offered both in-person visits and telehealth visits for psychological support and therapy, nutritional counseling and other resources to support physical and mental well-being and academic success. Students also receive physical therapy coaching during their simulation clinic training.
QUALITY ASSURANCE THROUGH ACCREDITATION PLANNING AND SELF STUDY Due to the impact of COVID-19, the school’s next accreditation site visit is delayed one year to October 2022. Writing teams did significant work over the past year to analyze institutional effectiveness, educational programs, faculty and

designer, lectures quickly transitioned to distance formats. Faculty training and a variety of learning applications and exam formats were available to support virtual classrooms with active student engagement. Academic exams maintained integrity through the use of electronic proctoring.
TAKE-HOME KITS SUPPORT STUDENT LEARNING A new learning resource was used as an adjunct to simulation courses in the early phases of the school’s return to campus in July 2020. Take-home simulator kits offered first-year students the opportunity to learn at home while still being connected to faculty remotely. The manikins attached to any tabletop and, with portable electric handpieces, allowed students to continue developing and practicing their technique skills.
Held via Zoom, the event attracted more than 175 attendees from inside and outside the school and featured 63 oral presentations about research, clinical cases, community service programs and Personalized Instruction Program (PIP) projects to faculty judges

CELEBRATING SUCCESS IN PERSON On June 13, 2021, the Dugoni School celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2021 with an in-person event— the first in-person commencement to be held by any university in San Francisco since the city’s mandated restrictions on large public gatherings began in March 2020. Graduates, families, friends, faculty and staff gathered for a joyous occasion following a year filled with pandemic challenges. The Dental Hygiene program held an in-person Pinning Ceremony on June 19, 2021 to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2021.

This became effective on January 1, 2020 and the Class of 2021 was the first to participate in this examination.
THE SURVEY SAYS Didactic courses were held online throughout the year due to pandemic restrictions for in-person gatherings on campus. How did students respond? How effective was this approach?
Remote learning was a success. The Office of Academic Affairs examined students’ remote learning experiences during the 2020 summer quarter through a survey among all DDS and IDS classes in October 2020. On the survey, the majority (76%) of students agreed or strongly agreed with the statement “Overall, this online course is effective,” suggesting that online learning was generally well accepted by DDS and IDS students. The majority of students also noted they prefer faculty continue with some online instruction post pandemic.
The summer 2020 online cohort were equally or more likely to earn an A grade. The summer 2020 student cohort’s grades were compared to those of the summer 2019 cohort, who had received face-to-face instruction for the same courses before the pandemic. Results demonstrated that in all but one of the 17 comparable courses, the summer 2020 online cohort were equally or more likely to earn an A grade than the summer 2019 cohort.

WELCOMING BACK PATIENTS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN HEALTH AND SAFETY Successfully implemented virtual telehealth screenings for prospective new patients to provide flexibility and convenience. Patient education health and safety video showed patients new protocols and what to expect when coming back to clinics. 6,016 COVID-19 PCR test results scanned to patient charts and 991 BinaxNOW rapid tests performed as part of testing protocols before starting aerosol-generating procedures.
NEW OMFS SURGICENTER The Dugoni School is advancing the art and science of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine in dentistry. Phase 1 was completed on a safety-focused, modern perioperative SurgiCenter for deep sedation and general anesthesia care for oral surgery patients. New technology, anesthesiology and recovery equipment, supplies and systems of care are now in place thanks to the work of many team members.

NEW RESEARCH THEMES DURING THE PANDEMIC Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the research lab room on campus was closed for a significant portion of the year. An exception was made for research related to COVID-19. Several faculty and staff rose to the challenge and initiated new projects, sometimes with new techniques.
NOTABLE NEW PROJECTS ON COVID-19: Dr. Shika Gupta ’07 and Dr. Nilou Nadershahi ’91, collaborating with Fatemeh Khatami of Pacific’s Bioengineering Department, started a project to measure aerosol production under dental procedures such as crown prep and cavitron, using a handheld spectrometer that measures particles up to 10mm in size. from the wastewater tests are compared with results from PCR and rapid-antigen testing, to determine if wastewater tests can be used as an early warning system for outbreaks.
Dr. Cassio Silva and Harmony Dakafay are studying the effects of smoking on the ability of the coronavirus to infect oral epithelial cells, and the ability of the coronavirus infection to stimulate an inflammatory response from the oral cells. Preliminary results show that oral cells express the same receptors used by the coronavirus to infect lung epithelial cells, and that smoking enhances the infection of oral cells by a pseudo-coronavirus. The results suggest that smoking is a risk factor for developing COVID-19 via infection of the oral cavity.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH TAKES NEW FORMS SERVING THE PUBLIC THROUGH VIRTUAL OUTREACH, VACCINE CLINICS AND CREATIVE COMMUNICATIONS
In-person outreach events were limited due to the cancellation of health fairs and community events because of the pandemic. However, the Dugoni School family found ways to connect with the public through virtual outreach and community messaging. Leaders of the Dugoni School's American Student Dental Association chapter organized a virtual dental health education event for children in August 2020. Students provided oral hygiene education to nearly 60 elementary school children and their families through Zoom. DRIVE-THROUGH OUTREACH

Dental Hygiene students volunteered with the Delta Pacific component of the California Dental Hygienists’ Association to deliver screenings, fluoride and nutritional counseling to children and families in Modesto during a public drivethrough event.
The Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) program took part in the 25th Annual Chinatown Community Health Fair, held virtually. Volunteers facilitated an online workshop on children’s oral health with an opportunity to “Ask the Doctor.” SCOPE also collaborated with Sonrisas Dental Health in San Mateo, providing Cantonese translation for its oral health Zoom presentations.
“COVID-19 and Your Health” virtual speaker series featured experts from the Dugoni School, School of Health Sciences and Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy.

LAUNCH OF “DENTAL CARE IS ESSENTIAL CARE” MEDIA CAMPAIGN The Dugoni School took an active role in educating the public about the importance of oral health care, especially for those who may have put off appointments and procedures because of the pandemic. Through public transit ads, TV interviews, social media and other media outreach, the school emphasized that “Dental Care is Essential Care” to encourage people to get back on track with their dental routine. Messaging also highlighted the connection between oral health and overall health.
