Same is a swim and ready-towear line from founders Shea Marie and Ryan Horne. The Los Angeles–based brand famous for its fashionforward swimwear recently launched a denim collection. Its new Perfect Jean is exactly that, and celebrity fans of the brand, including Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, are sure to agree. The singular style, made with Italian denim in Los Angeles, comes in five colorways: black, vintage light, vintage dark, classic blue and off-white. It is a straight leg, mid-rise style designed to lift the butt and elongate and slim the legs. Every detail has been considered, from signature tortoiseshell buttons to an absence of back label. samelosangeles.com

Originally designed in 2014 after Rossi spent a weekend in Portofino, the modern, minimal sandal still ranks among the brand’s bestsellers thanks to its modern proportions and minimalist lines. “The Portofino sandal embodies the essence of my vision: beauty in simplicity and quality, as well as in the attention to proportions,” says Rossi. “Its design is conceived to enhance a woman’s silhouette rather than prevail over her. After 10 years, our customers keep looking for it!” gianvitorossi.com

After a recent successful collaboration with designer Jean Paul Gaultier, British fashion and accessories label Jimmy Choo is hitting it out of the park (or the green) with a collection designed in collaboration with Malbon Golf. Founded in 2017 by culture and golf enthusiasts Stephen and Erica Malbon, Malbon Golf is a lifestyle brand showcasing high-performance golf shoes and accessories. From the course to the clubhouse, the sporty-yetelevated Jimmy Choo/Malbon collection includes effortless slip-on mules crafted in JC monogrammed denim or embossed leather finished with embroidery and interlocked logos. The Diamond Golf trainers embrace a sleek build with smooth leather uppers, while textured diamond cleats incorporate an efficient base for successfully tallying scores. “I love to surprise people with our collaborations, unexpected pairings that underscore shared values and expertise,” says Jimmy Choo creative director Sandra Choi. “Malbon are the masters of fusing fashion with function in golf wear. Blended with Jimmy Choo’s inherent glamour, you get a collection that’s playfully glamorous.” A limited-edition golf bag, club head covers, shoe bags, towels, bucket hats and caps are also in the range. jimmychoo.com

Cool Collaboration
Two brands team up on an outerwear collection
Agolde and Shoreditch Ski Club are partnering on a collection of outerwear for fall. Founded in Los Angeles, Agolde epitomizes the city’s relaxed and progressive attitude, while the East London–based Shoreditch Ski Club has an edgy-yet-technical, cutting-edge skiwear vibe. “As soon as I met [Agolde creative director] Karen Phelps and her team and we started developing the collection together in the studio, it became apparent that our shared obsession for form, detail and materiality—rather than ornamentation—could result in a really exciting range of graphic silhouettes,” says Shoreditch Ski Club founder and creative director Wil Beedle. “Exploring outerwear through the perspective of such an iconic denim brand brought a refreshing ray of California sunshine and a whole new attitude to Shoreditch Ski Club.” The collection of versatile styles fuses Agolde’s denim expertise with Shoreditch Ski Club’s technical performance experience. “The beauty of the collaboration means that women of all ages, lifestyles and locations are catered for—whether that’s an extra layer in California, a day-to-night city staple in the spectacularly unpredictable climes of London or technical performance and après-ski chic on the slopes of Aspen to the Alps,” says Phelps. agolde.com
The German-born makeup artist Tyron Machhausen, who calls New York City home, has collaborated with photographers including Inez and Vinoodh, Juergen Teller, Mert and Marcus and Annie Leibovitz on photo shoots and ad campaigns. He’s worked with many of his celebrity clients for years, and actors like Anne Hathaway, Margaret Qualley, Elle Fanning and Gal Gadot are devotees of his work. He’s also been a Chanel makeup artist for more than six years. “It is such an honor and an absolute dream to work for this iconic brand that I have admired for so long,” he says. Here’s how the makeup artist spends a typical day.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
TYRON Machhausen
The Chanel makeup artist takes us through a jam-packed day in his shoes
BY NATASHA WOLFF
6:30 A.M. I am just waking up, and my first order of business is to prepare a green juice and then head up to my rooftop garden to check on my green babies. It’s my favorite thing to do in the morning. I find it very meditative.
7:00 A.M. 30 minutes of yoga.
7:30 A.M. I take a cold shower with the music blasting in the background. This puts me in the best mood, gets the blood flowing and is the perfect way to start the day.
8:15 A.M. I check my makeup kit to make sure I have everything I need for the day.
8:30 A.M. I head to the studio for a cover shoot with one of my favorite people, actress and Chanel ambassador Whitney Peak.
9:20 A.M. I meet with the photographer, stylist, hair stylist and art director for the shoot to go through the creative direction and mood board.
9:45 A.M. Whitney arrives on set and we start the process of hair and makeup.
11:15 A.M. Last tweaks are made to prepare for the first shot.
1:45 P.M. We break for lunch, followed by a hair and makeup change for Whitney’s second look for the day.
3:00 P.M. We return to set.
5:00 P.M. That’s a wrap! I quickly chat with the photographer and check the first layout draft. It’s always so satisfying to see how everything comes together at the end of a shoot!
5:15 P.M. I pack up my kit, say goodbye to my fashion family and head back home to Brooklyn.
6:00 P.M. I head outside to take a walk with my husband. I always love to take a stroll after a day in the studio to decompress. This is followed by dinner at one of my favorite neighborhood spots.
8:30 P.M. I go through the behind-the-scenes photos from the day on my phone and select the images I would like to share on social media.
9:00 P.M. I shampoo my brushes and repack my kit for the next day’s shoot.
10:30 P.M. Lights out and sweet dreams!

ROLE MODEL
After 17 years in business, Josie Maran relaunches her beauty brand
Clean beauty mogul and model Josie Maran logged countless hours in the chairs of the beauty world’s top pros but could never find safe formulations that worked. In 2007, she launched her brand Josie Maran, which became the first green beauty brand ever to be stocked at Sephora. From Day 1, Josie Maran products have been free of petrochemicals and parabens and housed in eco-conscious packaging. Her original 100% Pure Argan Oil—organic, sustainably sourced and cold-pressed long before the industry caught onto those terms—was luxury beauty’s first single-ingredient face oil, bringing the ancient secret of Moroccan argan oil to department store counters for the first time. The brand’s signature argan oil is, to this day, present in every formula, including the blockbuster Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter.
Maran believes true beauty is chic, clean and effective, and in 2024, this founding principle is stronger than ever. It’s why she went back to the drawing board to design new, lower-waste, refillable packaging for her brand. “I started thinking about what I
would do if I launched the brand from scratch today,” Maran explains. “How would it be different? What are my values now and are they reflected in my brand? It allowed me to be creative again and look at the company with new eyes. We examined every part of the process, from supply chains and ingredient sourcing to the facilities where the products are manufactured and, of course, the packaging itself.”
The result was a reimagining of her most beloved products. Her 100% Pure Organic Argan Oil, Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter and Sugar and Argan Oil Body Scrub now come in even more sustainable, refillable packaging and clean new fragrances made with 100 percent plant-based fruit and plant essences. The three fragrances—Vanilla Vibezzz, Bohemian Fig and Topless Tangerine—are all inspired by Maran’s Northern California roots. “Fragrance is a fascination of mine. But because I’m super-sensitive to synthetic scents, it took me a long time to realize that fragrance could be fun,” Maran explains. josiemaran.com
Safe SPRITZES
From beachy Pacific Dreams to subtly sexy Hyper Rose, the clean beauty giant’s five new scents may be the healthiest spritzes yet
When it comes to clean beauty cult favorites, Beautycounter ’s inky-black mascara and brightening vitamin C serum rank high on the list. Now, devotees can finally dip into fragrance from the nontoxic cosmetics leader. After 11 years, the brand is launching Clean Eau de Parfum, a formula that’s free of potentially harmful ingredients including phthalates. “We’ve gone to great lengths to protect health and safety,” Beautycounter founder Gregg Renfrew says of the new scents. Renfrew’s current favorite of the group of five scents is Hyper Rose, a heady bouquet of earthy blooms including tuberose, gardenia and Turkish rose. Crafted with fragrance house Robertet using natural ingredients and safe synthetic essences, the range also includes Miles Away, a woodsy, bergamotlaced blend softened by sandalwood; zingy Sun Spill, with bright notes of grapefruit, neroli and jasmine; Second Skin, containing sensual wafts of vanilla and sandalwood; and aquatic Pacific Dreams, laced with fresh lemon and

bergamot. “Scent should be an extension of your personal brand,” Renfrew says.
In lieu of phthalates, which are used to bind fragrance to the skin, a synthetic sandalwood oil gives the formula staying power. Since clean fragrances tend to be a bit lighter, Renfrew suggests anointing spots that are naturally warm to amplify notes. “It’s a little bit behind the ears, on wrists, a little under the arms,” she says. But never go overboard. “I always like to remind people that a little goes a long way—you want to apply just enough so that people know they’re in your world, but not so much that they’re still smelling you 30 minutes later.”
The fragrances may smell amazing, but the brand’s mission is more than just a pretty moment. Renfrew also believes the radical ingredient transparency of this new line, compared to traditional fragrances on the market, offers a great teaching moment to help consumers become more aware of what they’re putting on their bodies. After helping to pass laws including MoCRA, which gives the FDA greater authority to regulate cosmetics, “we wanted to create an opportunity to really educate the masses on safer ingredients and increased disclosure.” beautycounter.com

We talked with Dr. Dendy Engelman to learn about the face and body treatments you need to invest in this summer
BY NATASHA WOLFF
PORTRAIT BY NICOLAS GERARDIN
It comes as no surprise that over the summer, patients clamor to see their beloved dermatologist for a seasonal tune-up. “Summer typically means more time spent socializing, traveling and showing off skin, so we see an influx of patients coming in looking for lifting, firming and sculpting treatments,” says top board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon Dr. Dendy Engelman. The New York City dermatologist, who works out of the Shafer Clinic at 535 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, talks to DuJour about the latest technologies she’s employing on her clients. shaferplasticsurgery.com

Shafer Clinic was one of the first practices to offer patients Skinvive by Juvéderm , the first product of its kind. Allergan Aesthetics’ Skinvive is a hyaluronic acid (HA) intradermal microdroplet injection, or injectable skin hydrator. Juvéderm Volux XC , the thickest filler on the market, is used for jawline augmentation and is a huge game changer for men and women who want a more supported jawline as it mimics bone. “Fillers are a popular and effective method of non-invasively sculpting and restoring volume to areas of the face,” says Dr. Engelman. “There is no downtime and the results can last up to six months, so this is a great treatment to do at the start of summer, for results that can be enjoyed all season long. Skinvive by Juvéderm is an innovative injectable that helps improve the skin’s smoothness and moisture retention with beautiful results. Volux is an excellent solution for many patients who wish to define their jawline.”
EMFACE
If you’re looking for a natural-looking lift, Emface is a surgery-free, zero-downtime treatment option that targets aging and muscle loss in the face. Muscle mass decreases by approximately 3–8 percent per decade after age 30, which can affect the definition and contours of the face. Emface focuses on strengthening, toning and rebuilding the muscles beneath the skin. It also helps improve the skin’s overall structure and definition for a plumper, more youthful-looking appearance. On average, patients saw a 92 percent
improvement in facial volume. The latest Emface applicator, designed for the area below the chin, helps further target and tone the more stubborn areas of the face for a more defined and contoured appearance. “I recommend patients do four 30-minute sessions over a four-week period,” says Dr. Engelman. “Patients love this treatment because they can see a visible difference in the way the forehead, cheeks and corners of the mouth are lifted and firmer after each session. Emface also has long-lasting results because the electromagnetic and radiofrequency stimulation boosts the body’s own collagen and elastin production.”
EXION
Exion is a game-changing head-to-toe skin treatment featuring four unique applicators, including microneedling radiofrequency (RF), a face and body applicator for addressing skin laxity and the popular Emfemme 360 applicator for intimate health. The innovative microneedling RF applicator penetrates deep into the skin to maximize collagen and elastin production, while having minimal downtime. The device also has a HA face applicator that stimulates the skin’s natural HA production and restores volume, hydration and skin elasticity. This is a great option for those who are looking to replenish their HA levels and improve the plumpness of the skin. “Exion is a favored treatment because it’s non-invasive and utilizes multiple modalities to improve skin’s hydration and firmness all over the body,” says Dr. Engelman. “We are able to easily customize a patient’s Exion treatment based on their individual goals.”
Summer typically means more time spent socializing, traveling and showing off skin, so we see an influx of patients coming in looking for lifting, firming and sculpting treatments.

HOME on the RANGE
Interior designer Abby Hetherington designed an eclectic and charming residence on a working Montana cattle ranch
BY NATASHA WOLFF
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY CALL
Amultigenerational family compound on a working cattle ranch in Big Timber, Montana, was the perfect project for Abby Hetherington. The designer loved re-envisioning the main house and three guest cabins for the current owners. The Bozeman-based interior designer, who has designed ski chalets at the Yellowstone Club and beachy homes in Boca Grande, was immediately attracted to the remote location with lots of wildlife. “The ranch is located between the Crazy Mountain and Absaroka Mountain ranges, which gives these unbelievable views,” says Hetherington. “Our mission was to create a home that was authentic to the land and a nod to rustic living, but enhanced for today’s everyday use. We found a balance between the two.” The design team took the structures down to the studs while still honoring the spaces. “Our clients wanted to keep the essence of the ranch, so they didn’t want to rebuild but modernize the current state of the old barn and cabins. Our job was to honor the past life of the property while enhancing it for now and future generations.”
A game nook for the family to play cards and hang out
With a living room and a loft, guests can enjoy their own private space to relax. More modern furniture is combined with traditional fabrics to embrace the rustic ranch atmosphere. Every room has a historic element that speaks to the local history. “Our clients wanted to keep the essence of the ranch, so they didn’t want to rebuild but modernize the current state of the old barn and cabins,” says Hetherington.
Of the three cabins on the property, the first is the largest, with a kitchenette and a living room. The cabin features a show-stopping twisting wood staircase leading to second-level loft guest quarters. Blue tones and plaid details were carried over from the main home. “Our job was to honor the past life of the property while enhancing it for now and future generations,” says Hetherington.
Our mission was to create a home that was authentic to the land and a nod to rustic living, but enhanced for today’s everyday use.
—ABBY HETHERINGTON
With a lot of dark wood in the homes, it was important for the design team to keep the interiors light and modern. “It was very dark, and we knew immediately we wanted to open up walls and use fresh paint colors,” explains Hetherington. “We played with patterns, using more modern furniture with traditional fabrics to keep with the cowboy rustic ranch.” Deep earth tones and natural materials are a common thread throughout all of the bedrooms. The main living area is centered around a substantial fireplace hearth, and the wood-planked walls encompass the warm space and complement the rich leather sofas and an oversized rustic pendant light. Playful plaid banquette seating offers an additional space to gather around the corner from the soft blue open kitchen. “With the old and new style we were going for, we made sure to not only enhance what was already there but make sure it was functional for the family,” says Hetherington. A large childrens’ lounge offers seating, a play area and bunk bed accommodations, closed off by sliding barn doors that connect to another cozy family area with a game table and multiple seating areas. Both guest cabins feature a show-stopping twisting wood staircase leading to second-level loft guest quarters. Blue tones and plaid details were carried over from the main home. “For authenticity, we spent a lot of time with furniture builders and craftsmen who built traditional cowboy furniture—yes, that is a thing! We also worked with local collectors and pickers to find Montana and Big Timber history,” says Hetherington. “Every room has a historic element that speaks to the local history. Being able to incorporate objects that we found was an awesome experience.” The home boasts a rich American West aesthetic with thoughtful local touches. “We created a collection of the history and culture of the local town that’s seen throughout the home. My favorite thing about this project was bringing life back to this ranch.” ■

Hudson has launched new shopping app Vêtir to manage and grow your closet
BY NATASHA WOLFF
Vêtir is an AI-driven shopping, styling, wardrobe curation and digital closet management app created by industry vet Kate Davidson Hudson. Its AI learning capability provides an exclusive shopping experience that creates a personalized retail experience, closet digitization and white glove concierge stylist interface to redefine the way consumers shop, engage with and manage the life cycle of their wardrobe. Davidson Hudson has already signed up top celebrity stylists, Tom Brady, personal shopping sourcers and influencers like Priya Shukla to upload the contents of their closets to the app. We spoke with Davidson Hudson to learn how Vêtir is ushering in a new era of luxury shopping experience through the power of data-driven personalization. vetirapp.com
What’s the problem with the current retail models?
The fashion industry, particularly on the luxury end of the spectrum, is traditionally slower to evolve than other industries. Right now, we have a very fragmented system where brick-and-mortar, ecommerce, social commerce, personal wardrobing, the emergent personal shopper market and personal stylists all work across divergent digital channels, in multiple different micro-ecosystems. We have incredible technological tools at our fingertips, yet our industry is one of the last to harness technology to create smarter systems that provide efficiency and personalization at scale.
How did your experience in editorial and retail inform your knowledge of retail, your customers and tech and your editorial creative vision?
One of the first things I learned as an editor was the art and power of compelling storytelling. Vêtir evolves this idea in the digital realm and offers a more scalable exclusive experience without the restrictions of a real estate footprint, time zones or geographic constraints.
What did you feel was missing in the personal styling and retail worlds that you wanted to solve with this app?
I think personal styling and the luxury shopping experience are limited by institutionalized inefficiencies in the system. Personal shoppers are relegated to the physical confines of a store or show room footprint. Some can work in a clunky fashion across text or WhatsApp, but they are doing so blindly, without the visibility into a client’s existing closet or any functional data on how that client consumes.
What functionality are you particularly excited about?
Our new AI feature can actually pick outfits for you and send you specific product links. Technology will never be a plug-and-play solution for a completely personalized luxury experience, but it can be harnessed as a powerful supporting player in a client’s fashion discovery journey. As a client interacts with the Vêtir product feed, Vêtir shoppable videos, the Vêtir chat or uploads product to their digital Vêtir closet, the AI is creating a custom algorithm designed personally for that client.
How does Vêtir connect personal shoppers with clients?
We believe that type of 1:1 personal sourcing is an increasingly important part of the customer journey so, for that reason, we are hugely excited that the Vêtir platform is the first and only platform on the market that seamlessly integrates these personal shoppers into the platform interface. Vêtir’s white glove closet digitizing service also allows for a team to go to a very important client’s home, photograph their closet (paging Cher Horowitz) and upload the images for them. ■

Best-selling author, life coach strategist, entrepreneur and global philanthropist Tony Robbins doubles down to help families facing food insecurity
BY JONATHAN HEY
Tony Robbins is taking action to address the chronic hunger affecting 300 million people worldwide that is caused by conflicts, extreme weather and economic downturns. Robbins, the New York Times bestselling author and world-renowned life and business strategist, is leading the 100 Billion Meals Challenge and the Future of Food global initiative. The global entrepreneur and philanthropist also partnered with Feeding America on the 1 Billion Meals Challenge, with a multiyear goal of providing 1 billion meals to people who are experiencing food insecurity. Almost 10 years into the campaign, Robbins and Feeding America say they have provided 935 million meals to people who are facing hunger across the country.
In the United States alone, nearly 34 million people, including more than 9 million children, are food insecure. “We know that those are more than startling statistics—those numbers are human beings suffering, and I came from one of those families,” says Robbins. “Tragically, the number of severely food insecure people remains unacceptable, having only grown since before the pandemic despite more than enough food existing to feed everyone on the planet. Human beings should not needlessly go hungry. Collectively, we must get food to people who need it and do not have the means to secure it for themselves or their families.” The 64-year-old experienced hunger as a child and has made combating human hunger his lifelong mission. “We cannot achieve world peace and progress on a planet half fed and half hungry,” he says. “What I have concluded is that the solution lies beyond mere food provision; it’s about transforming our global perspective and methods for sustainable nourishment. It involves rethinking strategies to supply food without burdening impoverished populations and our planet.” 100billionmeals.org
POOL PARTY
Swiss artist Nicolas Party’s swimming pool mosaic is the latest addition to the site-specific art collection of Amalfi Coast hotel Le Sirenuse
TBY NATASHA WOLFF
he famed Le Sirenuse hotel in the Italian city of Positano has unveiled a makeover of its pool by Swiss artist Nicolas Party. The work is the latest addition to the hotel’s ongoing site-specific series of commissions curated by Silka Rittson-Thomas, which to date comprises works by Martin Creed, Stanley Whitney, Rita Ackermann and Alex Israel. Each artist is invited to Positano to develop their work and find a home for it at the family-run property owned by Antonio and Carla Sersale.
Party has created an exuberant play of overlapping and interlocking organic forms, transforming the view from the poolside terrace of mountains, sun, sea and sky into a joyous, billowing landscape that shifts and dances underwater. The collaboration saw the artist spending a week at the hotel to get inspired for this mosaic installation. “It was a very family-based, collegial approach, which I found great,” Party says. He opted for an abstract pattern, explaining that “in a hotel that is already pretty perfect, I didn’t want the pool to stand out too much...I wanted it to look like a pool.” For the same reason, he chose a blue-green color palette for the overlapping wave-like shapes that swirl across the pool’s floor and climb its walls. In the center of the pool’s deepest section, he placed a disc made of golden mosaic tiles that, he says, “people will think of as the sun, because it’s gold and a circle…so when you jump into the pool, you’re jumping into the sky.”
The New York–based artist worked closely with Italian surfaces company Bisazza to translate his original pastel drawing into a pattern of glass mosaic tiles. “It struck me that it would be wonderful to ask him to reimagine the swimming pool of Le Sirenuse,” says Antonio Sersale. “When you enter a pool, you are entering another world, a watery realm that becomes even more rich and strange here on the hotel’s terrace, suspended magically between sea and sky.” ■

The actor dives into the role of Henry VIII in the buzzy summer film Firebrand
BY NAVEEN KUMAR
ude Law earned his first Academy Award nomination for playing a character whose allure is so intoxicating that it gets him killed. His breakthrough role, as the tawny bachelor Dickie Greenleaf in the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley, is a far cry from the English actor’s latest turn in Firebrand—an odious and gout-ridden Henry VIII whose presence makes people tremble with fear and disgust.
Firebrand is named for the king’s sixth and final wife, Catherine Parr, played by Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander. Directed by Karim Aïnouz, the film chronicles Parr’s perseverance as a Protestant sympathizer who survived her husband’s deadly Catholic regime. Law, in a near-monstrous supporting role, plays
the king’s violent last gasp with sneering resentment and a secret sense of remorse.
“He’d been a highly attractive and sought-after golden boy,” says Law, 51. “He was a romantic in a way, believing each time that he’d found the right woman. The murder and the mayhem that ensued was part of his sense that they had let him down.” Lumbering around shadowy halls on swollen legs, Law’s Henry VIII is a sour and spiteful menace. “He’s full of regret, self-medicating with alcohol and trying to deal with intense pain and the madness that it brings on.”
Law says that his approach to a role depends on the project and the director. He’s worked with a legendary set of the latter, including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson and Mike
CULTURE
Nichols. Law’s wide-ranging body of work includes prestige period dramas like Road to Perdition , Cold Mountain (for which he landed his second Academy Award nomination in 2004), and The Aviator; sci-fi thrillers like Gattaca and A.I. Artificial Intelligence; and, more recently, major franchise installments like Fantastic Beasts (as the young wizard Dumbledore) and Captain Marvel
For Firebrand , embracing the physical embodiment of Henry VIII and all that it entailed was essential to Law’s process. “It took so much time every morning to get into this huge, weighted costume and I would stay in it for the rest of the day,” Law says. “You could rehearse in jeans and a T-shirt, but then you would turn up in this enormous outfit and realize you’re going to knock everyone over. So you might as well maintain that sense of Henry’s shape and size.” That went for the king’s stench, too: Law collaborated with historians to conjure up a scent of bodily decay and wore it during the shoot inside a Derbyshire castle.
“It was so terrible that some days you couldn’t help but laugh,” Vikander says. “Jude was trying to make you go down a new path,
try different things. What these characters went through was so tough, but we also had a lot of fun working together,” Vikander says. The Swedish actress recalls admiring Law during production on 2012’s Anna Karenina , her first English-language film, where “he proved the work ethic and kind personality you need to bring to set,” she says. “He’s the most humble and down-to-earth person, which makes working with him extremely joyful.”
Many of Law’s early, career-defining performances hinged on an inescapable charm—Alfie ’s solipsistic womanizer, lovers with secrets behind their dazzling smiles in Closer and The Holiday that hypnotized audiences and heroines alike. “I didn’t feel like I really ever leaned into playing handsome, but there were roles that required an attractive energy,” Law says. “I was trying to play against my looks in my early 20s, and now that I’m saggy and balding, I wish I had played it up.” He’s being at least somewhat facetious: A trailer for the 2020 HBO series The New Pope , for example, shows a taut, chiseled Law striding slow-motion across a beach in a white Speedo.
Still, parts have recently come the actor’s way that “have not leaned in to any sort of attraction,” he says. “It’s been satisfying not having to turn that switch on.” Law scowls over a thick mustache as Captain Hook in Disney’s Peter Pan & Wendy; later this year, he will star in Ron Howard’s Eden , based on the true story of a group of people who retreat to the Galápagos to flee facism, and as an Idaho FBI agent pursuing a white supremacist group in The Order Law is also stepping into another entertainment juggernaut, as a Jedi shepherding a band of kids through harrowing adventures in the Star Wars series Skeleton Crew. Law, who grew up admiring the original films but “wasn’t a Star Wars geek, or whatever the polite way to say it is,” describes his character as “contradictory, complicated, mischievous and at times heroic,” though not very paternal. “He has no time for someone crying because they’re 11 and really scared,” Law says, “He’s like, ‘Pull yourself together and get on with it.’”
Law’s own parents were teachers who retired young and pursued their dreams of founding a theater troupe that travels around Europe. “Their love of the arts—film, theater, dance, music—was hugely influential” on Law and his sister, the painter Natasha Law, he says.
A father of seven, Law describes himself as an “excessive” dad, “because I think about them all the time.” His wife, Phillipa Coan, and their two kids have been traveling with Law for the past couple of years, living in seven or eight countries, an itinerant period he calls “wonderful but hard.” “I’ve never been
I was trying to play against my looks in my early 20s, and now that I’m saggy and balding, I wish I had played it up.
—JUDE LAW
someone who’s comfortable going off to film for weeks on my own. Having the reality to return to makes you feel normal again before going back to playing someone like Henry VIII.”
Acting is proving to be a family trade: Law’s eldest son, Rafferty, with his first wife Sadie Frost, appears in the Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air, released earlier this year. “It’s complicated because I’m aware of how hard it is,” Law says of watching his son get into the industry. “When I came into this business, I didn’t have the comparison, but with him, people might always say, ‘Oh, you’re just like your dad.’ Which is nonsense; his career is his career.”
“I’m thrilled because we get to share our enthusiasm, and I get to give him advice if he wants to hear it,” Law continues. “I’m immensely proud that he’s put himself out there because he found something that he loves. He’s obviously seen the way I work, and it’s rubbed off on him.” ■

Four great theater performances that beat the heat this summer
BY MARSHALL HEYMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILIO MADRID
RICKY UBEDA
Choreographer Justin Peck first pitched Ricky Ubeda the idea for Illinoise, a dance piece set to the music of Sufjan Stevens, on a walk in Riverside Park. Ubeda, a 28-year-old dancer who won season 11 of So You Think You Can Dance, had worked with Peck for several years. “I was immediately on board,” recalls Ubeda. “The piece just sounded fresh and unlike anything I’ve ever seen.” After a sold-out run at the Park Avenue Armory in March, the show slid quickly onto Broadway. Ubeda, who also appeared on stage in recent revivals of Carousel , On the Town and West Side Story, plays the central character Henry, a young writer caught between the demons of his past and the promise of his future. “It’s so rewarding to play a character that is figuring out how to sift through all of life’s stuff,” Ubeda says. “Whenever I step into his shoes, I feel so much empathy for his journey. I really feel this sense of wanting to take care of him. I find it incredibly healing.” Of course, Henry only speaks through movement. “But what’s being communicated is somehow more powerful than words,” explains Ubeda. “It cuts straight to the soul.”
SARAH PIDGEON
In a crowded, competitive season of theater openings, one of the year’s biggest breakouts has been 27-yearold actress Sarah Pidgeon. She made her Broadway debut in Stereophonic, a riveting play with music by Will Butler about a band in seemingly endless recording sessions for the follow-up to a smash success album. Echoes of the 11-month saga in which Fleetwood Mac recorded Rumours are no doubt intentional. Pidgeon plays Diana, a Stevie Nicks–like singer trying to find her voice while dipping in and out of a toxic relationship with lead singer Peter, an exacting megalomaniac whose goal is sheer auditory perfection. “It was one of those scripts that you don’t forget,” says Pidgeon of the show, the most Tony-nominated play in history. “The material is so rich. Out of the seven cast members, six of us are making our Broadway debut alongside the playwright David Adjmi. It all feels like kismet.”
WILL KEEN
It took until 2022 for the longtime British stage, film and television actor Will Keen to break out, and he did it playing Vladimir Putin in Patriots by Peter Morgan (The Crown). Told from the perspective of Russian billionaire businessman Boris Berezovsky (in London played by Tom Hollander; at the Barrymore Theatre, on Broadway, by Michael Stuhlbarg) the play is about the rise of the Russian oligarchs. Performances originated at London’s Almeida Theatre before moving to the West End, winning Keen a prestigious Olivier award. “It’s been a huge privilege to play someone who is so alive in an audience’s imagination,” says Keen. “It creates a really dynamic dialogue, a conversation which feels new every day because of the daily news cycle. There’s always a new perspective.”
RUTHIE ANN MILES
After 17 months playing the Beggar Woman in the recent revival of Sweeney Todd , Ruthie Ann Miles moves to yet another Stephen Sondheim show: a concert production of A Little Night Music this June at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. (The actress also appeared with Jake Gyllenhaal in the 2017 revival of Sunday in the Park With George.) Miles, who won a Tony in 2015 for The King and I at Lincoln Center Theater, plays Countess Charlotte, the icy wife of Count Carl-Magnus, who happens to be having an affair behind her back. Miles loves Sondheim, she says, most
notably his “wordsmithery,” not to mention how the late writer “thoroughly investigates the complexity and struggle between the human mind and heart.” When asked what Sondheim character she’d most like to play, Miles has an answer: “Is it cheating if I say, ‘All of them’?” As for moving from the gutters of 1840s London in Sweeney Todd to a “weekend in the country” in Sweden circa 1900, Miles is excited “to stand up straight and stand proudly in Charlotte’s power, rather than hunched over” as the Beggar Woman. “My physical therapists and I are very happy,” she says. ■

The hotel’s name is a reference to the five senses, and any stay here will certainly involve all of them, from the flavorful red and green chile at the hotel’s restaurant to the silence found in its tranquil courtyards to relaxing, Tibetan-inspired massages in the exotic spa. A passion project by Ira and Sylvia Seret, proponents of an internationally chic aesthetic starting in the 1970s, the Inn of the Five Graces opened in 1996 and features design elements from Central Asia, India, Afghanistan, Mexico, Peru and more within its pink adobe walls. Detailed mosaic bathrooms lovingly created by Sylvia using tiles, shards of glass and pottery scraps are magnificent works of art, as are in-room, piñon-burning fireplaces, Mughal tapestries and shaded patios for Zen reflection. fivegraces.com
ROSEWOOD INN OF THE ANASAZI
Set in the heart of the historic Plaza District, the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi is a true work of adobe art. Opened in 1991, the welcoming inn takes inspiration from the Indigenous cliff-dwelling Anasazi with enormous hand-carved doorways, Native American textiles, carvings and sculptural baskets adding warm, authentic touches to its 58 guest rooms. Ranging in size from a 300-squarefoot traditional room to a spacious two-bedroom Anasazi Suite with living and dining space, there are options for art-loving couples and families alike. A cozy library with morning coffee, the Anasazi Restaurant with its central Tequila Table (and outstanding huevos rancheros and tres leches pancakes at breakfast) and an outdoor patio that’s perfect for people watching are other smallcity pursuits. A small but state-of-the-art fitness studio has recently been added, and in-room massages are available at the end of long days spent at the nearby Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, hiking in Bandelier National Monument or simply strolling the galleries of Canyon Road. rosewoodhotels.com

TEN THOUSAND WAVES
Inspired by traditional Japanese onsen—hot spring baths—Ten Thousand Waves first opened in 1981 with eight outdoor hot tubs and one massage room. It has since gained a cult following for its serene wood, stone and trickling water setting, and continual enhancements mean that more people have discovered this relaxation gem. Choose from a Grand Bath at 106 degrees followed by a cold plunge, a Shoji experience with added sauna and cold plunge or the Waterfall, a larger pool that’s popular with families. Signature Shiatsu massage, 80-minute Deep Stone massage to relax the nervous system and Cannabliss massage that incorporates CBD to minimize pain are among the most popular services by some of the best therapists in the country. An overnight stay here is funky and wonderful as well, with a two-night minimum required for the property’s few Houses of the Moon: simple Japanese-style ryokans with preferred spa access and a complimentary bento box delivered to your door each morning. Best of all is a meal at Izanami, the izakaya-style, small-plates restaurant where chef Shigeru Usuki serves organic wagyu beef from nearby Morgan Ranch and seafood straight from Tokyo, all paired with a vast collection of rare sake. tenthousandwaves.com

In addition to eight communal tubs and private pools, there are hydrotherapy treatments and massages to suit every taste (or ailment). A sweet little adobe house is the perfect setting for chef Joseph Wrede’s beloved cooking where every thoughtful design detail has been executed by his wife, artist Kristin Bortles. The room at Joseph’s Culinary Pub is magical: low-lit, cozy, with hand-painted walls and curtains, plates made by a potter in nearby Arroyo Seco and a delicate eggshell chandelier. A vast wine list highlights local producers, as well as craft beers and spirits from area maker Altar Spirits. Creative menus have been drawing fans since 2013, with dishes like New Mexico lamb tartare and polenta fries (seared in duck fat for extra crispiness) among the delicious starters. Mains of sweet & spicy glazed duck with Thai-style charred cabbage and organic crispy chicken and mole negro with pickled cauliflower are examples of chef Wrede’s inventive approach. Not to be missed is the signature cloud cake, a 5-inch-thick slice of meringue cake with dollops of caramel and creme Anglaise on the side. josephsculinarypub.com
TAKE THE HIGH ROAD
Quaint churches, great hikes and a vibrant arts scene make Taos a highlight
To change it up, head for the High Road, part of the loop that connects Santa Fe with Taos and offers plenty of culture along the way. First stop: the village of Rancho Chimayo, where the local church, El Santuario de Chimayo, is famous for its miraculous healing properties. For authentic cuisine—cheese quesadillas, warm chips and salsa, carne asada—book ahead at Rancho de Chimayó, an institution for travelers throughout the valley. After passing through the scenic Carson National Forest and making a brief stop at Ranchos de Taos and the iconic San Francisco de Assisi Mission Church painted by Georgia O’Keeffe, head for a cultural afternoon in Taos. ranchodechimayo.com
Stroll the Taos Plaza, where shops and galleries beckon, before heading to the Taos Pueblo, a 1,000-year-old fully functioning community. For Native American and Spanish Colonial art, the Millicent Rogers Museum , just outside of town, is spectacular. A Standard Oil heiress, Rogers was a jewelry designer and arts connoisseur whose collections of Maria Martinez pottery, Rio Grande blankets, Apache baskets and turquoise jewelry are unmatched. taospueblo.com; millicentrogers.org
For the perfect end to the perfect day, book in at The Love Apple for dinner in an atmospheric, quaint church that dates back to the 1800s. The elevated cuisine is truly farm-to-fork (you’ll learn about foraging, their producers and more) and can be enjoyed in the candle-lit, wood-beamed dining room or outside under twinkling bistro lights. After a relaxing meal, opt for the Low Road back to Santa Fe, which is not as scenic but is much more direct. theloveapple.net
DEEP DIVE
COME FLY AWAY
More women than ever are learning to love fly fishing. With nature, solitude, the promise of empowerment and even a little bit of luxury, what’s not to love?
BY ALYSSA GIACOBBE
Before I moved to Maine, I had two associations with fly fishing and, yes, one involved Brad Pitt. The other was my college roommate’s dad, who belonged to an old-school members-only fishing club in Stowe, Vermont. Throughout our 20s, we’d visit with our boyfriends and kayak around the lake, hike the surrounding trails and never once pick up a rod. Why would we? It seemed more hobby than sport, and we didn’t have those back then. We also didn’t see any other women out there doing it, just dad-aged white guys.
I still don’t have hobbies, not really. But I have come around to more meditative forms of sport—and to actual meditation, too. Since moving full-time to vacationland, I’ve become something of a very amateur angler. Serenity is nice. So is being outside. I’ve learned to cast a rod, choose a fly based on something other than aesthetic appeal, wade through rocky waters without wiping out (mostly) and reel in a catch, sort of. It’s at turns frustrating and peaceful and, when it works, more than a little empowering.
I’m no trailblazer. I’m actually late to the game, especially here in Maine, where a younger generation discovered the appeal of fly fishing much earlier in their lives. Women are now the sport’s fastest-growing demographic, thanks to hometown fishing clubs around the country, an increased number of women working as guides, clinics and retreats geared toward solo and group female travelers and #girlswhofish on TikTok, where women raised by dads who taught them to not only appreciate the sport but love and excel
at it share highlights, and sometimes a little bit of skin, with a whole new audience. These are women who, undeterred by the sport’s heretofore male dominance, have the confidence to know that rivers don’t belong to any one gender, race or socioeconomic group.
And they’re excellent fisherwomen, too. While men remain fly fishing’s predominant participants, many argue that women’s attention to detail, patience and body awareness makes them even better suited to it. Research conducted in 2023 by the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation found that one in five female anglers say that fishing makes them feel like they can do anything they set their mind to. The study also found that active anglers are 24 percent more likely than non-anglers to say that setbacks don’t discourage them.
Despite its meditative aspects, endorphins are involved in fly fishing. Unlike ocean fishing, which I’d always considered exciting yet essentially consisted of dropping a line, cracking a beer and waiting, fly fishing is constant motion. You’re casting, mending, casting again, always going for the perfect arc. You’re wading into rushing waters along uneven rocky surfaces. You’re following the drift. If you know how, you’re analyzing the river for the spots the fish are most likely to be hanging out. You’re noticing the bugs in order to decide which fly to use next. It requires focus, trust, balance and your brain.
It was on a trip to Colorado Springs last summer that I caught my first big fish. We found Angler’s Covey guide Josh Heney through Bobby Mikulas, the owner of Kinship Landing, a boutique hotel built on the concept of providing guests with a “travel like a local”
experience. Mikulas is always eager to offer guests a recommendation for anything outdoorsy, and he happens to be an avid angler himself. Before my trip, he shared with me his favorite places to fish, even though anglers are famously hyper-protective of their spots.
Heney took us to one of them, a catch-and-release section of the South Platte River dubbed the “Dream Stream.” Heney helped me choose a fly and coached me on my cast, which I practiced over and over. Again and again, I watched my line drift down the river—no bites, not even evidence of fish. We chatted and we were quiet. We waded and waited. Fishing challenged my patience and results-oriented mindset—how come this wasn’t working?
And then it did. Heney had prepped me to pay attention to changes in the line that might indicate a fish was interested in my fly or already hooked on, and he warned me: That’s when I had to be even more patient. You can’t pull too soon or too fast. The key is to tire out the fish before you tire yourself.
My catch was a 4-pound rainbow trout. I posed for the requisite photo, then let him go. As with many things, fly fishing is about the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of the catch. But another reason I’ve come to love it is because it’s also about impermanence, where the ultimate victory is in knowing that it’s not the last. ■

SENSEI LĀNA‘I, A FOUR SEASONS RESORT
If you want some beach time, feel free to visit the Four Seasons Resort L ā naʻi, just a short ride away. But Sensei L ā naʻi, its sister property, is a luxury getaway-meets-health retreat designed to take relaxation to the next level. This one-of-a-kind mecca lies on 24 acres amidst a towering forest of trees hidden from the rest of the world. Before arrival, guests are paired with a wellness guide, a sort of personal guru who will set up one-on-one coaching sessions and craft a custom itinerary for your stay. Activities like horseback riding, an adventure course and even total body workouts are perfect for the Type As who often find their way here. But we suggest leaning into Sensei’s many opportunities for unwinding, tranquility and self discovery. For instance: a forest bathing session includes an intimate, focused examination of the flora and fauna and, in turn, may help you forget the problems you brought with you to this quiet Hawaiian island. Try a late-night meditative dip in one of the secluded, individual outdoor Onsen pods that on especially clear nights give you a perfect glimpse of the stars. You might like a thermal body mapping and massage complete with take-home imaging in one of the hotel’s hale—incredibly equipped spa huts that rival the coziness of the 96 bedrooms at Sensei. Journaling is encouraged while here and then back at home. Wellness dining comes courtesy of chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Meanwhile, round-trip transportation from Honolulu on L ā naʻi Air is included in your hotel stay and comes on a fleet of Pilatus PC-12 aircrafts (each seating up to eight passengers) with flexible, daily service for travelers and guests, not to mention a new luxe lounge in a private hangar to ease your journey to paradise. fourseasons.com
FOUR SEASONS RESORT O‘AHU AT KO OLINA
Ko Olina, a tiny coastal town on the island of O‘ahu, translates to “Place of Joy.” Perhaps the most blissful place of joy in this small enclave is the Four Seasons resort. It’s an oasis for guests young and old, with child-friendly activities, romantic nooks and peaceful surprises, all far from the overcrowded beaches and tourist traps of Waikiki. The emphasis at the resort is wellness, because what else should one focus on when in Hawaii? After a relaxing day at one of the four pools, a meditative beach walk, an invigorating game of pickleball or a snorkeling jaunt in the lagoon, the Naupaka Spa & Wellness Center has plenty of options to calm you from head to toe. Try, for instance, the K ō Hana Rum Massage, which uses rum-infused massage oil from a distillery just a few miles away. (Rum is meant to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.) Should you want to delve a bit deeper into reducing your anxiety, arrange a centering Mu Hala sound journey with Pi’iali’i Lawson, an intuitive energy realignment practitioner. For a week this July, Dana Childs will return to Ko Olina for a Healer-inResidence program offering a curated collection of mindfulness experiences. Of course, after all the resting and relaxation, you’re bound to be hungry. Each of the resort’s restaurants has been showered with awards for culinary excellence, including Noe for fresh pasta and other Italian delicacies and Mina’s Fish House, operated by celebrity chef Michael Mina, which offers its very own “fish sommelier.”
FOUR SEASONS RESORT HUALALAI
Most conversations about trips to Hawaii—especially to the Big Island—eventually end up at this incomparable property, a village unto itself. It’s not just about being beachside or having access to eight different outdoor pools; staying at Hualalai is a true experience. There are plenty of opportunities for water sports at Alaka‘i Nalu (“leaders of the waves”), not to mention other Pacific Ocean excursions such as snorkeling off a stunning new 46-foot catamaran called Alaka‘i Nui (“great leader”). At the Ka‘upulehu Cultural Center, you can learn to strum a ukulele while learning about Hawaiian history. Hualalai is devoted to the island’s marine life, and has been operating its own sustainable oyster farm for several years. Depending on the season, the oysters you eat on property may have come directly from there. At King’s Pond, the resort’s saltwater aquarium pool, you can explore more than 1,000 fish from 60 different species. If you’re lucky, you might even get to feed Kainalu (“ocean wave”), the resort’s resident spotted eagle ray. If your rapport with Kainalu is especially powerful, follow up with a private charter to snorkel at night and observe other rays in the ocean. A family picnic dinner at the beach or the omakase at ‘Ulu Ocean Grill are evening highlights. But make sure to save room for dessert after a 45-day dry aged tomahawk steak at Miller & Lux
Hualalai, the recently opened restaurant concept from San Francisco–based chef (and Food Network veteran) Tyler Florence. The attention to detail all around is superlative. And should you leave your teddy bear alone in your villa, you might come back to find him newly dressed in a kimono, enjoying the Big Island just as much as you.

ALL ABOUT
EVA
The Golden Globe–nominated actress returns to television with the six-episode dual English and Spanish language series Land of Women, premiering this summer on Apple TV+
By MARSHALL HEYMAN
SCHWARTZ
IT’S NOT MUCH OF A STRETCH TO SAY THAT EVA LONGORIA IS EVERYWHERE.
She’s got a new show on Apple TV+, Land of Women , which launches in June. She’ll be in the fourth season of the hit series Only Murders in the Building, set to debut on Hulu in late August. She’s got a tequila brand, Casa del Sol, which she launched in 2021. She recently announced that she would become a strategic advisor and investor in Siete Foods, the fastest-growing Hispanic food company in the United States, known primarily for its gluten-free tortilla chips. (Longoria met Siete co-founder Veronica Garza at a cheerleading camp when they were growing up in Texas.)
Longoria has worked steadfastly with the Television Academy Foundation to help encourage inclusion in the entertainment industry. She’s an investor in a women’s soccer team (Angel City Football Club), a men’s soccer team (Club Necaxa) and is co-owner of the ElevenEleven padel team. There’s also her philanthropy. She founded Eva’s Heroes, based in San Antonio, Texas, in 2006 and was just awarded the 2024 Courage and Civility Award by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez.
With a schedule that packed, you can imagine her nonstop travel. A few weeks ago, she was in London for two days for her friend Victoria Beckham’s birthday. While there, she also filmed for an upcoming adaptation of A Christmas Carol directed by Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham), in which she plays the Ghost of Christmas Past. She lives between Mexico City and Spain, she says, but on the day we connect, Longoria is about to board a flight from Los Angeles—the home base of her company, appropriately named Hyphenate Entertainment—to Miami, where she and her husband, the media mogul José Bastón, keep an apartment.
“I recently was in an airport in Poland and I saw myself in a big L’Oréal ad. And all I could think was, That’s so crazy That’s me I’m still really confused, and I’m always surprised,” Longoria recalls. She’s referring to yet another one of her many jobs—global ambassador for the beauty company—which she has held for the last two decades.
“What can I say?” she asks. “I’m the ultimate multitasker.”
Longoria suggests her ubiquity is the result of just hanging around the entertainment industry for more than two decades. She started as Flight Attendant #3 on an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210 but moved quickly on, in 2004, to Desperate Housewives, one of the last huge shows of network television.
Oh, and, at 49, she’s also a mom to 5-year-old Santiago. “The other day I heard [my son] say, ‘No, my mom’s an actress.’ And I looked at him and I thought, How did he even know that word and what it meant? ” Longoria says. “He’s still unimpressed.”
He might be the only one unimpressed by Longoria’s ability to juggle it all.
Coming off of directing the film Flamin’ Hot , which garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Song for “The Fire Inside,” Longoria needed a break. That’s why she’s only producing and starring in Land of Women , soon to debut on Apple TV+.
At the beginning of the series, Gala (Longoria) has just opened a sexy wine shop in New York City. She quickly discovers that her husband owes some bad people a lot of money, and they’re coming to collect. So Gala runs away to Spain with her annoyed daughter (newcomer Victoria Bazua) and her slightly cuckoo mom Julia (Carmen Maura, a favorite of Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar).
“I usually reverse-engineer my projects,” says Longoria of her work as a producer. “I start with a place I want to shoot.”
For Land of Women, Longoria told her friend, the writer/producer Ramón Campos, that she wanted to film in Spain’s wine country. She wanted something “super female forward,” she explained, and suggested Under the Tuscan Sun as a reference point. A month later, Campos came back with a pitch based on a bestselling Spanish novel by Sandra Barneda.
“So much of television is set in a dystopian future, and I can’t watch television set in a dystopian future,” says Longoria, who admits to “watching everything,” especially on plane rides. “I don’t want to worry and then start setting up my doomsday bunker after watching a television show.”
Land of Women , she explains, is optimistic, “very blue skies and fish-out-of-water. You just want to be there.”
Filming did, indeed, take place in Spain in the small medieval city of Figueres, birthplace of Salvador Dalí. It’s at “the complete other end” of the country from Marbella, where Longoria is relocating. To get to Figueres, at the eastern edge of Catalonia near the French border, “You need to take a plane, a train, a car, and then scale down a mountain,” Longoria jokes.
One last trick: The show is bilingual. (Actually, some of the characters speak Catalan, too.) “What’s the most authentic storytelling? I would talk to my daughter in English and my mother in Spanish,” says Longoria. “This wasn’t possible 10 or 15 years ago, but streaming has made content more global. The No. 1 show is Squid Game in Korean. Subtitles are very acceptable, and so is the idea of Spanglish. We’ve changed the way we seek out storytellers and points of view.”

“WHAT CAN I SAY? I’M THE ULTIMATE MULTITASKER.”
Easier said than done. “I’d never acted in Spanish,” Longoria admits. “My brain hurt at the end of the day. But I’m the American in the show. I make a lot of mistakes in Spanish, like I do in life. I say the wrong word at the wrong moment.”
“Watching Eva act is like watching Messi play soccer,” says Land of Women creator Campos. “Above all, she’s a natural and tireless worker who always supports the team and understands that she’s a crucial part of it—but just one part of it. She’ll get her hands dirty when needed, without worrying about appearances.”
It helps that Longoria could identify completely with her onscreen double. “I’m literally my character,” Longoria says, all the way down to being an oenophile. “I love wine. I love everything about it. I love the different grapes. During COVID, all I did was read about wine. I decided that I was going to study for the sommelier test.” She didn’t end up taking the exam, “but I still want to.”
See? Always multitasking.
After the success of Flamin’ Hot , Longoria decided to take a break from directing. “You could not have stopped me from making that movie,” she says. But even for someone who’s always steering the ship, it was a lot of work.
“I’m not rushing to make my sophomore movie because I’m looking for something to speak to me,” she says. Currently, “I’m reading everything,” including lots of potential biopics. “I’ll know it when I see it. I’ll know it when I read it.”
But this year, she says, “I’m only acting. This year is: Let me go back in front of the camera.”
First up: Land of Women . Next in line: Only Murders in the Building. “I’m most comfortable in television comedy,” Longoria says. “It was the first thing I learned, so I have probably worked the 10,000 hours. You find confidence through that many at-bats.”
But Only Murders in the Building isn’t your everyday television comedy. It’s a television comedy alongside the legendary Meryl Streep. No sweat, Longoria says. Streep is actually her distant relative, a link she discovered when they were both on Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates Jr.
“We actually call each other ‘cousin,’” Longoria laughs. The first time they made the connection in person was at an AFI tribute to Jane Fonda. Longoria sheepishly said hello to Streep. Since then, whenever they see each other, Longoria says, “We’ll say, ‘How are you, cousin?’ and ‘I’m good, cousin.’”
In the first Zoom table read for Only Murders, attended by 100 people from Zach Galifianakis to Molly Shannon to Selena Gomez, Streep introduced Longoria as her cousin.
“She tells the story and everyone’s so confused, because I’m the most Latina person in the industry and she’s Meryl Streep,” Longoria recalls.
Working on set in New York was, indeed, like family. “We talked a lot about democracy and politics,” Longoria says. “But when you have leaders like Steve Martin and Martin Short, you’re never not laughing. Watching them make a lunch order is a show in itself. It’s a constant roast about a sandwich, a 30-minute comedy about mustard.”
In addition to working with Streep, Longoria also had the opportunity this year to star opposite Eddie Murphy in The Pickup, a heist comedy that also stars Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson.
The movie, for Amazon MGM, is directed by another of Longoria’s longtime pals, Tim Story. She auditioned years ago for Story’s Fantastic Four, but didn’t get the role. “I think it was [the Invisible Woman, the role that went to] Jessica Alba, but it was one of those situations where they say, ‘We can’t tell you the story or let you read the script,’” Longoria says.
Longoria doesn’t often get starstruck, but that’s how she felt about working with Murphy. “He’s my Hollywood,” she explains, describing how she was inspired by Murphy’s classic projects from Harlem Nights to Beverly Hills Cop. “He’s my kind of funny. He’s a comedy savant.”
“I DON’T LIKE WASTING TIME. I CONSIDER TIME LIKE MONEY. YOU’RE EITHER SPENDING IT OR YOU’RE WASTING IT, AND I CHOOSE TO SPEND IT.”
“And of course the first day on set, we have to kiss,” Longoria says. “So it was like, ‘Nice to meet you,’ and then mwah .” Well, is Murphy a good kisser? “We didn’t have makeout scenes,” Longoria demurs. “It was just a good-morning kiss.” Do they have a texting relationship now? “He’s very private,” Longoria says, adding that no, they don’t send each other Netflix recommendations. “I just sat and listened.”
In addition to 1) ordering a sandwich with Martin Short and Steve Martin; 2) being introduced to 100 people as Meryl Streep’s cousin; and 3) kissing Eddie Murphy—a major year for anyone, no doubt—Longoria also got to see Tom Cruise do the splits on the dance floor at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party in London in April.
Of all of those experiences, which was the most entertaining?
“It’s a toss-up,” Longoria says, adding that Cruise “is the kindest human being and the best dancer. I’ve seen him dance at many parties.” She didn’t recall him doing the splits at any of those other parties, though. This was special. “I danced for five hours at the party and we didn’t leave till 3 a.m.,” Longoria says. “I woke up sore wondering if I’d worked out [too hard] the day before. No, we just danced a lot.”
Longoria insists that she doesn’t actually know everyone in Hollywood. It just seems like she does.
“There are so many people I don’t know and I want to work with, and I’m old,” she says. “But I’m lucky. I’m definitely lucky.”
Her secret recipe is relatively simple, actually.
“I don’t like wasting time,” Longoria says as her airplane is called for boarding. “I consider time like money. You’re either spending it or you’re wasting it, and I choose to spend it.” ■

COT TAGE CORE
The Cottages at the Boat Basin, overlooking the Nantucket harbor, has unveiled a six-month multimillion-dollar renovation. Drawing on Nantucket’s rich seafaring past and Quaker influence, Nantucket-based designer Audrey Sterk infused new life into the 29 cottages, which occupy an enviable perch along the slips of the Nantucket Boat Basin. Under the White Elephant Resorts family, the individually styled accommodations are inspired by the names of the great whaling ships of the 1700s with names like Sea Syren, Essex and Orion. Ranging from studio cottages to split-level three-bedroom lofts, the historic accommodations have been revamped without altering their original architecture. All cottages offer full kitchens and most feature private outdoor decks. The cottages feature a color palette of ocean blue, misty gray and stark white. Caged lighting, nautical charts of Nantucket, brass barometer instruments, rope and jute detailing and woven fixtures inject a dose of contemporary maritime charm. Amenities include access to bicycles and kids’ fishing rods, reels and nets and a shuttle to the beach. thecottagesnantucket.com

CHANEL DOES DALLAS
Peter Marino has reimagined the brand’s Highland Park Village boutique
Chanel has reopened its boutique in Dallas at Highland Park Village. The 6,500-square-foot store was designed in partnership with longtime Chanel collaborator Peter Marino and showcases the entire Chanel universe, including clothing, shoes, handbags, watches, fine jewelry, fragrance and beauty. Designed to feel like a private residence, the two-story space is a modern blend of serene neutral tones with accents of pink, gold and yellow.
Past the matte black granite entryway featuring a Marino-designed bronze commode, clients will discover handbags and accessories as well as the fine jewelry and watch salons (including the J12 watch collection and Coco Crush fine jewelry collections). At the back of the boutique, a glistening gold and polished black room is reserved for fragrance and beauty. Upstairs, the ready-to-wear salon features a dynamic mix of antique and contemporary furniture and decorative art, including chairs by Italian furniture designer
Augusto Bozzi upholstered in custom fabrics, lion sculptures from Italian ceramicist Bruno Gambone, custom gilt tables from FrenchSwedish artist Ingrid Donat and a 12-panel 18th-century Chinese Coromandel screen. Artwork by Andrei Molodkin, Johan Creten, Heinz Mack, Vera Lutter, Mario Deluigi and François Morellet are on display throughout.
The store opens with Virginie Viard’s spring/ summer ready-to-wear collection, inspired by freedom, movement and the seaside gardens of Villa Noailles, a modernist home in Hyères, France, designed by the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1923. Lightweight tweed and neoprene suiting, striped terry cloth jackets, swimsuits, lace dresses and trousers and transparent organza separates are made for layering. “I tried to bring one thing and its opposite together in the coolest way possible,” says Viard. “And the gardens and swimming pool of the Villa Noailles, that exceptional setting, lend themselves to that rather well.” chanel.com

Jack & Harry’s, a New Orleans–inspired restaurant and bar, has opened in Park Cities pairing Southern charm with French-infused recipes. “The sentiment behind this new concept stems from my love for dry-aged steaks, the rich tapestry of New Orleans culture and an unforgettable trip taken alongside some of my close restaurateur friends, Julian Barsotti and Greg Katz, early in my career,” says Vandelay Hospitality Group founder Hunter Pond. “Jack & Harry’s is a restaurant I’ve wanted to open for many years, so I am happy it’s finally come to fruition.” The cozy interior within the 5,000-square-foot space has an intimate scale, rich in detail and layered in history, as the building it occupies dates back to 1945. When guests walk into the thoughtfully designed, newly opened Nuri Steakhouse in Uptown, which features interactive grills at each table, they will feel transported. The Beachside Hotel from Blue Flag Capital has reopened as a family-friendly seaside resort. Taking inspiration from simpler times, Beachside Hotel will feature upscale, oversized suites, single-family hotel rooms, open-air balconies, a newly constructed
pool and kid’s pool, gym, meeting space, courtyard, restaurant and bar and game room perfect for the whole family to enjoy. “The Beachside Hotel was designed around the idea of an endless summer,” says Brad Guidi, Blue Flag’s co-founder. “We focused on creating outdoor spaces where discovery is limitless. We wanted to offer a space where children and their parents alike would equally enjoy the property.” Located near Jetties Beach, the hotel’s interiors were designed by Parts & Labor in partnership with Blue Flag. “The design is definitely unique to Nantucket—it is fun, retro, coastal and upscale,” says Guidi. “We didn’t use the typical Nantucket color palette. Instead, we utilized terracottas, gentle creams, dark greens and natural woods.” The centerpiece of the property is the new pool courtyard, which will feature a mahogany deck and plenty of loungers. thebeachside.com

Bathhouse co-founders Travis Talmadge and Jason Goodman wanted to redefine the traditional bathhouse model to provide cutting-edge, performance-enhancing therapies in a contemporary setting. “Wellness trends have largely focused around nutrition and fitness, and although these are major pieces of the puzzle, if you’re serious about performance, recovery has to be part of that equation,” says Talmadge. Recently, Bathhouse opened its second New York City location in Flatiron with thermal pools, hammams, multiple sauna and steam options, cryotherapy, a sensory deprivation tank, massage treatment rooms and a private ritual bath area. There are an incredible number of treatment offerings, from scrubs to massages. The Rockwell Group and Colberg Architecture designed the sleek, modern and socially engaging paradise. “Bathhouses in various forms have been around for 5,000 years,” says Goodman. “It was about time that Manhattan had one designed for the sensibilities and hospitality standards of the 21st century. You’re going to feel amazing afterward and leave better off than when you arrived.” The owners wanted to create a relaxing respite but also a social space for people to gather. To that end, there’s also an all-day café serving salads, eggs and soups. “Hospitality has pivoted in a more experiential direction, and Bathhouse is a recovery oasis that is inherently social,” says Talmadge. abathhouse.com

LEGEND of the FALL
Cinderella’s glass slippers, Dorothy’s ruby red slippers and Naomi Campbell’s Westwood platforms
BY EDWARD ESPITIA
Vivienne Westwood’s Fall 1993 collection, often referred to as the Anglomania collection, was a seminal moment for ’90s fashion. The collection was infused with Westwood’s love of historic silhouettes that celebrated British and Scottish heritage and punk aesthetics. Westwood, ever the activist, used the collection to speak out on environmentalism, consumerism and social inequality.
The collection featured a daring reinterpretation of the ancient Scottish ghillie brogue. A shoe that is pierced and laced without a tongue, created to drain and dry quickly while trekking through the wet and muddy highland, the ghillie brogue is an essential part of traditional Highland dress. One of Westwood’s variations of the shoe included a lofty 9-inch heel and a 4-inch platform, covered in cobalt blue mock crocodile and laced around the ankles with matching satin ribbons.
The model tasked to wear the sky-high Super Elevated Ghillie was 22-year-old Naomi Campbell. By 1993, she was already known as a catwalk powerhouse with an unmatched strut. She
appeared on the runway wearing a tartan skirt, velvet jacket, bright pink feather boa, rubber tights and the platform heels. As soon as she turned the corner, her ankles began to wobble and all 6 feet, 7 inches of her fell to the ground. Campbell, ever the professional, turned what could have been an embarrassing snafu into a moment etched in fashion history: She laughed it off to thunderous applause and whistles and hopped back up to complete her walk.
The shoes she wore are instantly recognizable to any fashion enthusiast. They now reside in the Victoria and Albert Museum and have been featured in several exhibitions. Those ghillies will once again be in the spotlight in the Naomi: In Fashion exhibition being presented by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Produced in collaboration with Campbell with photos curated by Edward Enninful, it will be the first exhibition to celebrate the work of an individual fashion model. It will feature pieces from her own fashion archive as well as loans from designers and the museum.
Naomi: In Fashion opens June 22 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
