This chart depicts the network of both close and business-like relationships between Young Trustee Nominating Committee members and the YT semifinalists, as disclosed by the committee. by Carleigh Stiehm THE CHRONICLE
The members of the Young Trustee Nominating Committee declared eight major and 13 minor conflicts of interest in relation to the Young Trustee semifinalists. Major conflicts of interest led members
of the committee—which narrowed the eight Young Trustee applicants down to three finalists Jan. 21—to remove themselves from voting on the candidate in question, but not from voting on the others. The connections between the YTNC members and the Young Trustee semifinal-
ists posed a challenge to the ability of the committee to select finalists in an unbiased manner. Since the committee selected the three finalists who are currently campaigning for election by the student body, several members have begun publicly supporting
one or more of the candidates that the committee selected. The YTNC sought to avoid bias during its selection process by allowing members with conflicts of interest to excuse themselves SEE YT ON PAGE 6

Aubrey McClendon, co-founder and CEO of Chesapeake Energy Corp., will step down as the company’s leader effective April 1, according to a company release Tuesday. McClendon, Trinity ’81, announced his decision to retire months after the unraveling of his unethical business practices. A report from Reuters in April 2012 outlined the CEO’s hand in taking out approximately $1.1 billion in loans against his personal stakes in the enterprises’s oil and gas wells through the use of a corporate incentive program, the Founder Well Participation Program. “When it comes to...meaningful participation, then, just ask yourself where you cast more ballots: the voting booth, or the supermarket....” —Chris Bassil in ‘Society, state and market: part II.’ See column page 11
An unidentified individual was killed in a train accident just off of East Campus Tuesday evening. An eastbound Amtrak train struck the pedestrian who was trespassing the tracks at approximately 7:43 p.m. near the intersection of Buchanan Boulevard and West Main Street, about one mile west of the Durham Amtrak Station. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Onscene Durham police officers described the individual as an older man—likely not a Duke student and possibly homeless. The train and its passengers remained at the site of the accident until 9:55 p.m. while authorities investigated the scene, SEE TRAIN ON PAGE 4
