Forbidden lovers bridge Duke-UNC divide

One star-crossed couple found romance amidst the rivalry on Valentine’s Day, despite the heated emotions from Wednesday night’s game.

Such is the case for Katie and Stephen Clark, the former a 2008 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the latter a 2008 graduate of Duke. The couple, who married in May 2009, currently reside in Chapel Hill—“behind enemy lines,” according to Stephen.

The pair’s relationship predates their involvement in the rivalry: they attended high

school together in Jupiter, Fla., and have dated since sophomore year of college.

Despite each being devoted fans of their respective schools, the couple managed to put aside the rivalry for the sake of their relationship—game days notwithstanding.

“The rivalry didn’t really have a big effect on our day-to-day relationship, but during basketball season sometimes we pretty much didn’t talk to each other,” Katie said. “The days that Duke played Carolina, and typically the day after, too, we couldn’t say anything, because one of us was always upset.”

For football games, Stephen noted, they could stand to let their relationship be greater than the competition and remain on speaking terms.

Parting is such sweet sorrow, so the couple made extensive use of the Robertson Scholars Express Bus during their undergraduate years to visit each other often.

“It was a really nice thing to be so close and to be able to go back and forth,” Stephen said.

After the pair graduated, however, the nature of the rivalry began to blur: Katie joined Stephen at Duke, taking a job at Duke Hospital while Stephen became a Ph.D. candidate in engineering. She eventually enrolled in Duke’s School of Nursing

Although Katie retained her UNC allegiance at first, she eventually began to feel an affinity for Duke.

Two years after she graduated from UNC, Katie attended her first game in Cameron Indoor Stadium at Stephen’s request—a blowout win over Maryland en route to the

2010 national championship.

“That was the point where I saw Katie flip the switch off from being a Duke hater,” Stephen said.

She attributed the infectious atmosphere of Cameron to her transition in loyalty.

Aphrodisiacs—substances that boost libido— have been speculated to be more mental than physical. There has, however, been some science behind the notorious claims. Although studies have not found a direct link between chocolate consumption and heightened sexual arousal, Cynthia Kuhn noted that it is hard to deny the effects chocolate has on an individual. Kuhn is a professor of pharmacology and cancer biology at the School of Medicine. Kuhn spoke with The Chronicle about the link between chocolate and sexual desire.

The Black Student Alliance decided to honor ESPN’s Rivalry week by inviting Tar Heels to campus for a pre-game discussion on love and lust in the black community.

Black Love, one of BSA’s major events outside of the Black Student Alliance Invitational—a weekend for admitted black students—is a tradition that takes place around Valentine’s Day every year. Students gathered Wednesday to hear panelists answer questions surrounding taboo subjects like promiscuity, interracial dating and finding “the one.”

The panel was followed by a friendly competition to continue the romantic theme.

This year, for the first time, the student group decided to include students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the program to add new perspec-

tives to the event. The competition was followed by a basketball watch party in the same space.

“This year we were grateful to collaborate with UNC’s Black Student Movement,” said Genesis Bonds, codirector of programming for BSA. “This was a great way to bring everybody together and support healthy competition.”

Duke was represented on the panel by sophomore Cherranda Smith, senior Ehiszele Osehobo, former BSA President Nana Asante, Trinity ’12, and Sean Palmer, assistant director of the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture. Sophomore Darius Whitney and senior Alexis Davis represented UNC. The panelists fielded questions on topics ranging from dating culture on campus to the black community’s suppression of the LGBT community.

—There is no miracle compound that gives chocolate its purported aphrodisiac qualities.

But research has uncovered many psychoactive compounds, such as pheneylethylamine and anandamide, that may trigger love-like symptoms. Pheneylethylamine, a stimulant related to amphetamine, is released in the brain when someone is in love. The other, anandamide, is known to cause dopamine production and, in turn, leads to feelings of well being that people associate with a high.

—Not the aphrodisiac that it’s made out to be in popular culture, chocolate will induce minute changes in your body. But an individual would need to eat about 50 chocolate bars to experience a behavioral arousal, a stimulation that is caused in part due to its great smell and its sugar and fat content.

but not so much other aphrodisiacs. For instance, many herbs are touted to increase erections, but effects on women are not known. The Spanish fly, a type of blister beetle famous for its widespread usage as a libido-enhancing substance, merely increases blood flow to genitals in both men and women.

—It is significant to note that such desire is initiated in the brain, not in the genitals. Some addictive drugs like heroin have been said to give a feeling like orgasm, but people do not really know how to increase desire, especially in women, except by the sensory qualities of the partner.

—Stories of true aphrodisiacs that increase desire are few and far between. Some herbs—such as the bine herb—have been proven to increase erections in men, but desire is far more complex than a single chemical.

—The chemicals linked to attraction in many species are known as pheromones, which give olfactory stimuli that then increase sexual behavior. Animals use pheromones to communicate nonverbally, transmitting the chemical signals often through air. They are suspected, but not proven, to be active in humans as well.

—Advice to hopeful lovers: Count on your own sensual finesse.

—The media has touted the effects of common aphrodisiacs, such as oysters, red wine and hot peppers, but many of these claims are speculative. None of these really increase sexual desires, but the vast majority of such substances simply increase blood flow to the genitals, a desired effect.

At student-run store, the best price is free

Some Duke students have been practicing a new form of free market, where all goods at the market are literally free.

The Duke Free Store, a combined operation of Duke Recycles and Sustainable Duke, allows students to donate or take office supplies, books and other miscellaneous objects free of charge. The store, which meets every other week in the Bryan Center, including this Thursday, encourages individuals to make use of items that would otherwise be thrown away. The store is run by three members of Students for Sustainable living, a Sustainable Duke program that aims to make Duke more environmentally friendly.

“People are like, ‘What’s the catch?’’ said freshman Kelly Shen, one of the SSL members who runs the store. “We tell them there is none.”

The Free Store was opened four years ago by undergraduates who were part of SSL. Lately, though, it has been increasing in popularity. On Jan. 17, it attracted 130 people.

And on Jan. 31, it had reached that number more than three hours before closing.

“More and more people are starting to know about us,” Shen said. “It’s starting to become a thing at Duke.”

The majority of the items donated to the store are from Duke faculty members who are participating in the Green Devil Smackdown, said Samantha Emmert, a sophomore who also helps organize the store.

The Smackdown is a sustainability competition involving teams of 10-100 students and faculty members pursuing the competition’s grand prize, a “Green Devil cham-

pionship belt.” The Free Store provides a sheet where donors can write down their information in order to earn points for the competition.

Although many of the donors are Duke faculty, students have not been shy about taking items, Shen said.

“You never know what you can find— practical stuff like envelopes and also binders for school,” said Kennetra Irby, a second year student at the Divinity School and shopper at the Free Store.

Some items in the store have more value than most people would expect, Emmert said.

The store has had printers, DVD players and microwaves. On Jan. 31, an individual even donated a book signed by Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.

“Lots of people feel bad for taking things,” Shen said. “Some people take a bunch of things and then ask, ‘Are you sure? I feel bad.’”

Sarah Wilcox, a Duke student also in her second year at the Divinity School, said she was intrigued because she lives in a town where she and her friends used to get together and do a clothes swap.

“I was like oh, it’s just a small town thing, that will never happen again,” Wilcox said.

“But I think it’s cool that they are doing something like that here.”

Emmert said she is not aware of anything similar to the Free Store at other universities. The store demands support from not only the students, but also the University.

“It takes a lot of time getting everything organized and one of us needs to be here all day,” she said. “Duke’s ahead of the curve in a lot of ways in terms of sustainability stuff.”

“In many ways it was entertaining, but it was also enlightening just to hear what other people’s thoughts were,” said Duke senior Joan Nambuba.

Following the panel, four couples— three consisting of two Duke students each and one intercampus couple—began a competition similar to Newlyweds, a game that involves couples answering trivia questions about each other.

UNC junior Tevin Neal, who competed with Duke junior Najerie Danns, said being able to compete was the most enjoyable part of the evening.

“I honestly had a lot of fun,” said Neal.

“You can’t help being there in Cameron and being pulled into being a Duke fan,” she said. “Since then, I’ve kind of cheered for Duke.”

But for all Cameron’s intensity, she could not allow herself to completely convert. When Duke plays Carolina, she still roots for the Tarheels.

“It’s the only time I’m not able to cheer for Duke,” she said.

Katie is not alone in her blended allegiance, however. Stephen, a self-professed diehard fan, made a pact with Katie that he would root for Carolina football if she promised not to persistently cheer against Duke basketball.

“You’ve got to make sacrifices in a marriage, right?” he said.

Although he initially maintained his end of the pact successfully, last October’s 33-30 Duke win against Carolina made him unable to do so.

“We were at the game, and I was definitely rooting for Carolina and he said he was going to—but he didn’t at all. I was pretty mad at

Katie’s appreciation of Duke is supported by the fact that her younger sister, Caroline Horrow, is currently a freshman at the University.

Caroline, seven years Katie’s junior, has seen her fanhood make a transition similar to Katie’s over the years.

“Honestly, I was a huge UNC fan when I was younger just because Katie was there, but that’s gone now—I don’t harbor any allegiance,” Horrow said.

She added that her parents have lessened their cheering for UNC and acknowledged both schools as alike in dignity: they swapped out a UNC license plate frame for a Duke-UNC “House Divided” one.

For all the competition between the schools, both Katie and Stephen appreciate the collaboration that exists.

“We very often had professors from Duke come over and speak at Carolina and vice versa,” Katie said.

“Being so close is really great for research and learning.”

The proximity proved helpful for love, too, empowering the Clarks to bury their schools’ strife.

Plumlee steps it up after an ugly first half

Mike Krzyzewski said he thinks Tyler Thornton will be a coach one day, but there’s one other thing he sees in common between himself and Duke’s junior guard.

“I like him because he can get angry.

I don’t think players get angry like they used to,” Krzyzewski said. “That comes easy for me.”

Trailing by as many as 10 in the first half to North Carolina (16-8, 6-5 in the ACC), the No. 2 Blue Devils (22-2, 9-2) needed somebody to get angry.

Thornton was that man, sparking Duke’s rally past the Tar Heels en route to a 73-68 victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium Wednesday night.

Tyler Thornton hit 3-of-4 3-pointers and sparked Duke’s second-half comeback against UNC. backcourt, he is no stranger to the spotlight. Last season, he hit a game-clinching 3-pointer in Hawaii to beat then-No. 14 Kansas at the Maui Invitational.

Thornton had yet to have such a memorable moment this season, but that changed against North Carolina when he was the only Blue Devil to hit a 3-pointer in the first half. He followed that up in the second half with the team’s second trey of the game.

He then weaved a halfcourt bullet between two defenders to Quinn Cook for an easy layup, giving Duke a 44-43 lead—one it would not relinquish.

“I never wanted too much attention to begin with,” Thornton said. “My teammates, my coaches, they know what I bring to the table. When I get in the game, I just try to make an impact.”

The Blue Devils finished hitting 17-of-20 from the line, including 10-for-10 in the final few minutes.

After first half struggles, senior captain Mason Plumlee showed North Carolina (16-8, 6-5 in the ACC) why he’s a National Player of the Year candidate Wednesday night when the Blue Devils (22-2, 9-2) snuck past their biggest rivals.

The reigning ACC Player of the Week has started each of No. 2 Duke’s 23 games this year, but he probably wished he didn’t against the Tar Heels. He picked up two fouls in the period and finished the half with four turnovers.

Although the foul trouble plagued him throughout the game—Plumlee came back to lead Duke with 11 rebounds and tied sophomore guard Quinn Cook with 18 points, recording another double-double to follow up on his performance Sunday at Boston College.

“We made some dumb fouls and got ourselves in a lot of foul trouble,” Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “We’ve turned it over more than we have the entire year.”

Twelve of the Tar Heels’ 33 first-half points came off turnovers as Duke struggled to generate any offensive rhythm.

While Plumlee played more than any other Blue Devil during the first half, notching 19 minutes on the court, he epitomized the team’s offensive struggles.

In addition to the first-half turnovers, he finished the period going 3-for-8 from the field—including a miss on the game’s first possession, an ugly attempt that set the tone for Duke’s first-half struggles. “[The Tar Heels] were getting out running—they really pushed the ball... and they got some easy open looks and some dunks, but we made the adjustment,” Plumlee said.

Foul trouble plagued the Blue Devils throughout the game, with 22 total fouls, 15 of which came in the second half.

By the end of the game, Cook, junior Josh Hairston, Plumlee and freshman Rasheed Sulaimon had four fouls each, getting dangerously close to leaving the game.

“I wanted to stay aggressive, but at the same time I didn’t want to come out of the game,” Sulaimon said.

Despite Plumlee collecting two more fouls during the second half—coming to a total of four with 6:40 remaining—he did not foul out, even with a close call with less than three minutes remaining in the game when North Carolina sophomore P.J. Hairston tried to take the charge on Plumlee.

“We started the half and Mason got his third and we were down 38-31, and I subbed for Mason,” Krzyzewski said. “He was playing like he had three fouls, and [North Carolina’s James Michael] McAdoo was just going at him. McAdoo was either going to score or Mason was going to foul him, so we took him out.”

Students observe Ash Wednesday at Yoh

Cameron Crazies receiving “grace” from tenting and lining responsibilities has never been so spiritual.

At last night’s contest between the Blue Devils and archrival North Carolina, blue body paint was abundant as always. But this season a number of Cameron Crazies added smears of black ash to their gameday wardrobes as a number of Duke basketball fans observed the Christian holiday Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the 40-day period of Lent.

To better accommodate its students who were attending last night’s game, the Duke Catholic Center moved its usual 7:30 p.m. mass in the Duke Chapel to services in Yoh Football Center at 3:30 and 5 p.m. so that students could worship without having to stray too far from the pregame festivities in Krzyzewskiville.

“We realized that if we had a 7:30 p.m. service, nobody would be there. So we explored other times to have something for students and tried to be sensitive to class schedules,” said Fr. Michael Martin, Director of the Duke Catholic Center. “But so many students are in Krzyzewskiville and in that area, and thanks to Coach Cutcliffe and the football program, we were able to use a space that was convenient for all of the students who would be out there at that time.”

Although holding the service right before the biggest home basketball game of the year would usually be seen as a deterrent for student attendance, Martin added that the mass’s location may have helped the Catholic Center boost their Ash Wednesday attendance this year. Martin estimated that last year, more than 700 students attended

“We talked about it possibly helping our attendance, and if that is the case, let’s play this game on Ash Wednesday every year,” Martin said. “And God knows, a little prayer before a Duke-Carolina game never hurt anybody.”

Ash Wednesday, a holiday based on the lunar calendar, usually falls anywhere from early February to early March each year. But having the holiday fall on the same night of the Duke’s first matchup with North Carolina is not terribly uncommon. The two teams usually meet the second Wednesday in February,

and the holiday coincided with the teams’ first matchup of the season in both 2005 and 2008.

Sophomore Elisa Oliver, who attended Wednesday’s 5 p.m. mass, said holding mass in the Yoh Football Center provided churchgoers with a unique Ash Wednesday experience.

“It was definitely a sight I had never seen before. We were sitting in church and my feet were on a turf football field,” Oliver said. “It was great walking to church through Krzyzewskiville and seeing

Martin even tailored his service to the day’s basketball related festivities, speaking about Duke basketball and school spirit in his homily—a commentary that follows the reading of scripture—and relating this week’s Bible passages to the Blue Devils’ showdown with North Carolina.

Oliver added that a large percentage of the congregation was not dressed for a church service, but rather Duke’s biggest rivalry game of the season.

“Everyone there was in Duke blue and it looked like almost all of them were going to the game, so it was really smart on the part of the Catholic Center to utilize that space for mass,” Oliver said. “Nobody was painted up yet, but it would have been pretty crazy to see people painted up for church.”

While Duke basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski celebrated his 66th birthday on the day of the game, the game held added significance as he is Catholic. Krzyzewski did not wear ashes on his forehead during the Blue Devils’ 73-68 victory against the Tar Heels, but Duke football head coach David Cutcliffe was sporting his ashes when he was featured on camera during the game and was reported to have attended mass at the football center that afternoon.

Martin declined to comment on the religious practices of Duke coaches and student athletes, but said it is common to see members of the men’s basketball program attending services on Ash Wednesday every year.

“Coach K has been very gracious to me, and I appreciate all of his support,” Martin said. “The best I can do is pray for him and his team.”

And in an ugly game, in which Duke trailed for the entire first half and turned it over a total of 17 times, the team needed somebody to do the little things. When the Blue Devils pushed their lead to eight points for the first time—off a Seth Curry 3-pointer—it was a second-chance opportunity, kept alive by none other than Thornton, who tapped the ball to Curry on the perimeter for the open look.

“It seems like in all big games, when it’s close, it’s Tyler who makes simple plays that aren’t going to be in the boxscore to put us over the top,” Curry said. “I got the credit for that three, but he was the one who made it happen with that tip-out.”

The Tar Heels refused to go away after that point but they never took the lead again, even though a number of Blue Devils were forced to contend with foul trouble. Mason Plumlee picked up his fourth foul with 6:41 left and Cook, Curry and Rasheed Sulaimon all eventually picked up their fourth fouls as well.

The foul trouble forced Thornton into the spotlight, even though the comeback once seemed improbable given Duke’s lack of offensive mojo. After Plumlee goofed up a lay-up on the game’s first possession, Duke turned the ball over on the next two times down as the Tar Heels raced out to a 5-0 lead.

Plumlee and Cook led Duke in scoring with 18 points each, but both contributed to the team’s early woes. They each recorded four turnovers in the first period, giving North Carolina 12 points off turnovers in the frame.

There was no relief for the Blue Devils until the final seconds ticked off the clock as UNC hung close even after Duke took the lead.

That all changed in the second half though, as the duo turned it over just once in the final 20 minutes. They were also critical to the team’s clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch, when Plumlee, Cook, Curry and Sulaimon combined to hit 10-of-10 from the line in the game’s final 3:16.

The teams went into the break with the Tar Heels leading 33-29, and the frustration for the Blue Devils was apparent. Duke assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski fumed at the referees before heading to the locker room, only to leave and have Krzyzewski spend the next minute of halftime giving the referee a lecture.

Krzyzewski, who was celebrating his 66th birthday Wednesday, was as emotional as the game was tense. After Sulaimon took a charge in the second half with the Blue Devils making their run, Krzyzewski gestured to the team and the fans emphatically.

Perhaps the best birthday present was somebody who can comiserate in anger.

“Anger is an emotion that gets you passed being tired and it gets you past a lot,” Krzyzewski said. “If anger destroys something bad, it’s good. If it destroys something good, it’s bad. His anger, his competitiveness was really good for us tonight.”

Plumlee was similarly clutch against Boston College, when he hit 3-of-4 free throws in the game’s final minute to give the Blue Devils a 62-61 victory.

And not only was Wednesday’s win against the Tar Heels a thrilling comeback against a rival, it also solidified the team’s position in the mind of Krzyzewski, who saw the potential for his team to collapse after its 27-point loss to Miami early in the ACC season.

“It’s easy to go south, even if you’re trying,” Krzyzewski said. “I know we’re going to be an NCAA team now, but you still have to punch tickets... so we’re punching our ticket, we’re going to be there. Now how do we bring our team along so when we are there, we might be able to do well? We have to run our race and not worry about anyone else’s race.”

That being said, we come to Duke or any new chapter of our lives with enthusiasm and a readiness to take on new experiences fully and deeply. Why not let this same eagerness carry over into our romantic lives? Healthy approaches to romantic relationships make people happier in other areas of their lives too, such as helping people learn to take risks, be vulnerable and communicate. An intimate relationship with a romantic partner can be a wonderful aspect of coming into adulthood.

Although here at Duke, the norm has become not

to date, and so we fall into the scripts we’re all familiar with of how people who are attracted to one another behave. We do not necessarily wish for the old fashioned dating practices to resurface or lament the current ‘hook up culture,’ rather we hope for people to show their intentions through means which are free from social coercion.

We say this, but turn a skeptical eye towards those extremists in our culture that monumentalize romantic love as the ultimate source of meaning, stability and happiness in human life. Advertising for jewelry stores or dating websites comed to mind. Dukies know that our friends sustain us in these four years,

challenge us, strive with and against us, prop us up against failure. It is our friends who see in a lasting way beyond the constellation of awards, categories and club names that too often define us in college to the whirl of individuality underneath. So skip the roses, and send your friend a bonsai fig tree this Valentine’s Day. Respect the ficus bonsai tree.

valentine’sdaydukies I’ve never been in love. I’ve had my share of crushes, girls that I wanted to get to know ... more intimately ... but never have I felt something lasting, something more than just the hormone-fueled reactions of a horny teenage male. Lust dies. Without love, sex feels meaningless. There’s very little intrinsic value.

I’m hoping that I can find someone who I can build a bond of love with. Something more than the drunken, illjudged hooking-up endemic to college campuses and the stereotypical frat-boy experience.

While I’ve been at Duke, I haven’t met the woman of my dreams yet. But I have fallen in love with so many women through The Chronicle. Mia Lehrer, Elena Botella, Sam Lachman, old columnists like Lillie Reed and Lindsay Tomson, even the new ones like Ellie Schaack, Pi Praveen and many others. Such smart, funny, passionate women. Thank you Chronicle opinion writers for being my love connection.

Girls deserve to get off too.

If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?

Guys see spontaneous romantic gestures as risky on this campus, because we don’t know if the gesture will be appreciated or offensive to a girl.

—Discouraged I was snooping through my boyfriend’s phone earlier this week (something he adamantly does not let me do). Hidden in one of the app folders, I found that he uses Grindr on a regular basis.

He had chatted, exchanged naked pictures and hooked up with at least a small handful of guys from what I saw.

Of course, I’m devastated. But past the disappointment, I’m not sure how to feel. I want him to be happy and comfortable more than anything. I now understand why he didn’t seem very “into” our relationship. But I am also hurt that he would lie to me and play with my emotions to stay closeted.

I haven’t said anything to him about it yet, and I probably won’t by the time this is published. I love him so deeply, and I want him to love me back.

In a place like Duke it’s hard to admit that you can’t do something, or worse you can’t do it alone.

We’re smart and proud, we’ve been taught we’re the best of the best and can pretty much do anything we set our minds to. But who said we had to go it alone? Some see relationships as a waste of time, unnecessary stress, time away from what “really matters,” not having someone who knows just how to make you happy when everything is going wrong or looks at you and laughs because you did that one little silly thing you always do. That person who brightens your day with a text, a laugh or even a quick kiss on the quad before running off to class. Sounds good right? It won’t make you weak, it won’t make you any less of a badass pre-med, Econ, trilingual, super-cultured Duke student. It makes you human.

I have a significant other, and I truly enjoy sharing the holiday with that person. I feel guilty when other people pout about not having a Valentine. Does every single person have a personal vendetta to minimize my feelings because they don’t have someone to share the day with? And if we have great sex that night, well then that’s just the cherry on top...

An open letter to Gov. McCrory

D

ear Gov. McCrory, Though I’m fortunate enough to hail from Ohio, the greatest state in our union, I still keep abreast of what’s going on in North Carolina—my second, wonderful home state. As a Republican, Duke student and political science major, I was disappointed to listen to the radio interview you gave a couple of weeks ago, during which you expressed an interest in defunding certain daniel strunk areas of study at North Carolina public universities. The questions not asked sound bite the media grappled on to was your declaration, “If you want to take gender studies that’s fine. Go to a private school, and take it.”

I listened to the interview in its entirety, rather than just picking and choosing the choicest bits. I am guessing (hoping) this comment doesn’t express a malevolent view of the academic field of gender studies. Rather, I think it is a poor phrasing of your larger belief that public tax dollars should only fund areas of study that produce jobs for students. I’d like to respond to this larger sentiment and the potentiality of defunding certain academic disciplines, rather than the specific gender studies statement itself.

First, I feel that your comments shortchange the value of a liberal arts education with respect to job growth. It has become almost trite to say that the liberal arts teach you how to think. Yet this is undoubtedly true in my experience. I can point to many skills I’ve garnered as a result of my study of political science—writing and verbal argumentation as just two examples—but more than anything I’ve learned an analytical method of thinking. I’m certain that other fields of study, gender studies included, teach other diverse ways of thinking.

Learning how to think differently has never been bad for job creation. Our nation’s history is filled with businesspeople who have had the temerity to see beyond the status quo. The liberal arts are entrepreneurial in nature. They teach a student how to ask questions and identify problems. A businessman can’t answer questions he doesn’t know to ask. A businesswoman can’t solve problems she never knows to identify.

Should you want North Carolina to be filled with people who all think the same way and do the same things, it makes sense to limit fields of study. If you want a dynamic and creative economy, limiting knowledge is not the way to achieve it.

Secondly, by exalting employment as the end-all, be-all goal of education, you’ve neglected to recognize the plethora of other ways in which academics generate value. Pursuing an area of study for which you have passion certainly garners utility for oneself through intellectual enlightenment. That is the most basic example. But academics also inform discussion, break down barriers, allow for a more knowledgeable citizenry, promote the arts and inspire dreams. In 1983, Aaron Sorkin graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre, one of the majors you might consider defunding. But how many future public servants do you think Sorkin inspired with his production of “The West Wing”? Could we possibly quantify the value of that inspiration?

Finally, I’m afraid I’m going to have to violate the 11th Commandment and, as a fellow Republican, call you out for contradicting conservative principles. We are the party of individual liberty, opportunity and localized authority—or so we like to say. Yet you advocated in your radio interview for government to take a selective approach to the allocation of university funding. This, in effect, is the government using its power to control what people can and cannot study—a restraint upon individual liberty and opportunity. And it takes power out of the hands of the public universities themselves, which are in a better-localized position to determine where to allocate the funding they might receive. Think about it, Gov. McCrory, you are advocating the limitation of access to knowledge. That smacks of the actions of a 1984 communist state of yesteryear, not a free-market, job-growing society predicated on personal freedom.

In closing, I’d like to say that I’m personally a fan of yours.

I’ve heard from Republicans and Democrats alike that you were an excellent mayor of Charlotte, and I thought you ran an efficient and effective campaign for governor. It’s my hope that these arguments might challenge your pragmatic governing side. As Republicans, let’s augment academic liberty, entrepreneurial spirit and inspiration—not dampen it.

his past week Duke announced a new minor in creative writing. The news spread with no great fanfare, and, excluding English majors, I doubt many students know about it. From what I can tell, it’s the first time Duke has ever marketed creative writing as something that warranted a credential.

Here’s my eight-word public service announcement: the minor is there if you want it.

Partly because of the newly offered minor and partly because I’m a senior beginning to make sense of my time here, I’ve spent much of this week thinking about what it has been like to be a poet at Duke. I didn’t come here in order to become a poet, and I’m not sure I would have chosen Duke had I known four years ago that I wanted to study poetry. To put it bluntly, other schools have more defined creative writing programs and have more vibrant undergraduate literary communities. At Duke, it’s rare for me to speak to people reading literature for fun outside of class or trying to publish their work. The creative writing workshops I’ve been in have often been populated by students with only a passing interest in writing. Often they’re in the classroom mostly to satisfy Trinity requirements.

That being said, I know that I’ve improved tremendously as a writer at this school, and there are ways in which to turn most of Duke’s weaknesses into advantages. I’m going to spend the rest of this editor’s note talking about those: the ways in which students can harness this school to be-

come better writers, to build communities when they’re lacking and find the inspiration and dedication to write when we most need it.

When I came to Duke, I thought I was a terrible writer.

I had gotten B’s in my English classes throughout high school. Writing was something that my other friends could do but that I didn’t seem capable of. But my Writing 20 professor liked the work I turned in for her and encouraged me to write. One day my freshman year, I remember having the urge to write a poem for the first time since 5th grade. I had just come upstairs after having picked out a book from the lowest level of Perkins. When I was down there, I was overcome by the sense that I was in a book graveyard, that real human beings had spent their lives writing books that were not being read and that these books were stuck in the innards of mechanical bookshelves. I sat down and wrote.

I submitted that poem to The Archive, Duke’s undergraduate literary magazine, and they published it. It wasn’t anything special as far as poems go, but I think that the seal of approval allowed me to think that poetry was something I could do. Without that affirmation, I doubt I’d be writing poetry today. If I had gone to a school with many more accomplished poets, I’d never have gotten it published. I might have been too intimidated to even submit it.

One of the best things about being a writer at Duke is that there is very little competition. The workshops with the superstar faculty poets and novelists have always had open spaces. Those same professors have always had time for me at their office hours. nities that exist tend to last. Because Duke wants to support writers and because Duke happens to have money to spend on visiting artists and lecturers, I’ve had opportunities to interact with famous authors I’d never otherwise meet.

Colum McCann has bought rounds of Irish whiskey for me at the Joyce, and when it became obvious I wasn’t keeping up with him, he cut me off. I’ve introduced Amiri Baraka when he read here last year, and later spoke with him about the future of jazz and Caribbean poetry. Most of my inspiration to keep writing has come from talking to writers who have made it and who have shown me that good things can happen with some talent and a lot of dedication.

Every writer who is serious about writing has to read seriously. While at Duke, I’ve found that it was easiest for me to tell myself to read a book of poetry every single day and not go to sleep until I’d read one. That way, reading felt just as important as my homework did. Every so often I’d go to the Carpenter Reading Room in Bostock—that room where everyone works but nobody really uses the books on the shelves so that all of these major works in the history of literature sit there unused, seemingly only covers, like the books in Gatsby’s library—and I’d pick out a random book of poetry. I’m fairly confident I was the first one to read at least four or five of those books. The bookmarks had never been moved. The spines had never been cracked.

Of course, you can take as many literature classes, as many workshops as you want, but if you don’t have something that you care deeply about it’s almost impossible to write well in a place with so many different bids for your time. Becoming a poet is not like becoming an engineer or a chemist—at least not at Duke. You can’t learn poetry by taking lots of standardized creative writing courses. And the work that needs to be done can’t only happen inside a classroom. It’s something you won’t necessarily get by picking up a minor in creative writing, and no departmental program is going to fix that. But if you find professors to mentor you and students to read and write with you, you can create non-conventional spaces to grow as a writer at Duke.

In 2010, legendary jazz guitarist Pat Metheny conceived what is known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Orchestrion.â&#x20AC;? An orchestrion is an orchestra comprised of automated instruments. Methenyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Orchestrion is set up so that Metheny, playing only his guitar, can play the whole orchestra simultaneously: e.g. he can pluck one string in a certain way and make the synth play a particular note.

As outlandish and futuristic as it seems, the orchestrion is not an entirely new concept. Automated orchestras have existed since around 1805, but they have never been done quite like Methenyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Whereas typical orchestrion arrangements play tunes that sound like they were composed for player pianos or carousels, Methenyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s orchestrion plays a complicated, contemporary version of fusion jazz.

mier jazz guitarists for over twenty years. Earlier this week he won his 20th Grammy award; he has released over 50 unique albums, some of which feature 42 string guitars; he has been featured as DownBeat Magazineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guitarist of the year four times; and his solo guitar work has been widely acclaimed. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s with Orchestrion that Metheny best demonstrates his versatility, compiling all of the styles from his diverse repertoire of jazz, fusion, latin and post-bop.

It seems like a risky, avant-garde move, but the album still sounds like a Metheny record. Many of the tracks, separated from the albumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s conceit, could easily camouflage next to dozens of other fusion tracks released previously from Metheny. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Expansionâ&#x20AC;? is a prime example. Its classic smooth guitar solos with a latin vibe are somewhat predictable. Given that it is composed and played by an automated orchestration, it admittedly is more impressive, but judged as music separate from its performance, the track doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stand out. Not every track is as predictable. â&#x20AC;&#x153;80/81 Broadway Bluesâ&#x20AC;? edges on experimental jazz. Beginning with a simple, soft, pan flute, the track progresses to a more discordant array of sounds and crashes, all the while quoting classic jazz riffs. The track â&#x20AC;&#x153;Orchestrionâ&#x20AC;? is a showcase of the talent and creativity that

went into the production of the album, but it seems as if it embraces the pop side of fusion a little too much and feels a bit showy. By contrast, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unity Village,â&#x20AC;? the last track on the album, is the least Orchestrion-sounding of the bunch. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the albumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purest track, the song least dependent on the Orchestrion conceit, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the only times on the album where a completely solo guitar is featured. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a coincidence. The idea of the album is to create something complex and it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be very impressive if Methenyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guitar just controlled his guitar. However, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not until â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unity Villageâ&#x20AC;? that Methenyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strength as soloist comes through, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clear that Metheny has often made his songs over-complicated so as to have the Orchestrion inspire greater awe.

As a concept album, The Orchestrion Project is phenomenal.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mind-boggling that such distinctive tracks could be composed of automated instruments all played by one brilliant musician. But none of the tracks are emotionally difficult or moving in the way of the best fusion jazz. Separate the album from its method, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s another solid, but forgettable, Metheny album.

In the wake of Dukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own scandal about race, Bruce Norrisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Clybourne Park feels all too relevant as a played concerned with racial tension. Often considered a response to Lorraine Hansberryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s A Raisin in the Sun, the play picks up where Raisin left off. A 1950s white neighborhood is coping withâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;or not coping withâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the imminent arrival of an African-American family. In Act II, the play fasts forward to what would be considered the present day; this time, a white couple is negotiating construction contracts with a black couple who represents the neighborhoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homeowner association. Although the conversation is different, the racial conflicts are identical, commenting on the lack of progress even as eras change. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most surprising, perhaps, is that Clybourne Park is funny.

Clybourne Park leaves the audience simultaneously stunned and in hysterics, the laughter mostly stemming from discomfort and disbelief. In fact, a large portion of the dialogue in the second act consists solely of stereotype jokes and, were this a movie instead of a play, it would surely be rated â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Râ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for some of the language in this section alone. In fact, I heard the older man next to me whisper to his friend, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I hope there are no children here.â&#x20AC;? However, the extreme language emphasizes the current difficulties when it comes to discussing race. Though ultimately more accepting, Norrisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; characters from the new millennium have a much harder time expressing their thoughts than the more overtly racist characters of the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;50s.

Although this play effectively communicates racial issues as told through seemingly unremarkable situations, Clybourne falls short. Perhaps its rotation with Raisinâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a show that did not merely move the audience, but grab them and toss them aboutâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;made the impact of Clybourne Park underwhelming.

But what ultimately stops this show from being a home run is something inherent; the characters are stereotypes. Yes, that is done to make a point, but something is lost when people are reduced to caricatures.

In Act II, the white woman onstage says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;half my friends are blackâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;I dated a black manâ&#x20AC;? to prove herself as colorblind.

While at first I thought, yes, I know that type of woman, I later realized that I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;tâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;not actually, not in real lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;know that person, nor do most people. Even reasonable and what feel like recognizable stereotypes are still just that: stereotypes. So while Clybourne is interesting and meaningful, it simply cannot say as much about reality; the characters are familiar, but not entirely relatable.

The staging also causes some problems. The fault does not lie with any one person, but the problem has to do with the sheer number of people on stage. Actorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; backs face the audience as they speakâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and not just here and there, but consistently throughout the play. It would look unnatural to have the characters talk to each other in a semi-circle, but simply allowing actors to face upstage is not the solution.

Clybourne Park has an innovative structure and provides a unique commentary on a persisting issue, but it does not leave you with the incomparable high of a killer comedy nor with the gut-punching impact of a truly dramatic moment. â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Jamie Kessler

Light Sensitive exhibition opens at Nasher

Real. Objective. Scientific. These are among the myriad of words that have become associated with photography.

However, the Nasher Museum’s newest exhibition, Light Sensitive: Photographic Works from North Carolina Collections, dispels the myth of photographic realism.

Opening this Thursday and running through May 12, Light Sensitive, which is co-curated by Patricia Leighten, Professor of Art History & Visual Studies at Duke, and Sarah Schroth, Nancy Hanks Senior Curator at the Nasher Museum, consists of over 100 photographic works, ranging from antique daguerreotypes to modern digitals. Among the pieces, viewers will find the iconic works of Sally Mann and Andy Warhol, as well as pieces by Duke’s own Margaret Sartor, Visiting Lecturer at the Center for Documentary Studies.

Despite the wide range of works, the exhibition maintains a specific focus: showing that the camera is not, and has never been, an “innocent eye” capable of replicating the world exactly as it is. The curators hope that viewers will become aware that photographs are not pieces of evidence or records of reality, but rather, are carefully crafted artworks.

“I hope that they will see the power that photographers have to exaggerate aspects of photographic technique in order to shape viewers’ responses to their subjects,” says Leighten.

The exhibition is split into five sections, each of which explores the ways photographers are “pushing the medium,” says Leighten. Specifically, the sections include “Light Magic,” “Intensified Vision,” “Metamorphosis,” “Emulation” and “Identities Constructed.”

Viewers will first encounter “Light Magic,” which demonstrates how photographers can creatively play with light in their images. Specifically, these photographers use sharp contrasts, long exposures, reverse negative prints and other methods to manipulate lighting. In many instances, such as in Vera Lutter’s Fulton Ferry Landing, Brooklyn, the result is an image that does not remotely resemble reality.

“Light is the easiest way to see how photographers can exaggerate,” says Leighten, commenting on why the section appears first.

Next, “Intensified Vision” calls attention to other methods

that photographers employ while crafting their images. These techniques include but are not limited to focus, depth of field and “angle of vision.” For example, in This Sporting Life, Larry Fink makes a praying mantis appear larger than life by shooting it with a shallow depth of field while reclining on the dirt.

“Metamorphosis” most challenges the notion of photographic realism, as it includes pieces in which artists have painted over photographs, fused multiple negatives or carefully staged scenes. A notable standout is Anthony Goicolea’s Guardian, which presents multiple negatives of dogs amidst a snowy winter wonderland.

“Emulations” explores the long-standing relationship between photography and other media. One piece that comically addresses this relationship is Robert Minick’s Women at Inspiration Point, Yosemite, in which a woman looks at Yosemite Falls while wearing a tourist scarf containing a painting of the Falls.

Lastly, “Constructed Identities” focuses on portraiture to illustrate how photographers create specific identities for their subjects and reveal, in Leighten’s words, “the social circumstances that shape identity.” Images of children, such as Raymond Meeks’s Abby, Jake, Jocko Valley Montana, are especially prominent in this section.

However, aside from these five sub-themes, Light Sensitive also has an additional storyline running through it: the narrative of a lively community of North Carolina photography collectors.

While the exhibition covers a wide range of photographs that spans the historical and geographic spectrum, they all come from one of twelve public or private NC collections.

“It is a celebration of our local collections,” says Wendy Livingston, manager of marketing and communications for the Nasher.

Frank Konhaus, who, together with his wife Ellen, supplied 14 works for the exhibition, attests that the celebration is warranted. Musing on the local art collector community, he recounted being “completely blown away by the wealth and depth of the collections that we have here in North Carolina.”

The curators’ decision to focus on NC collections was driven by their curiosity about what was being collected in the community. “It was an exploration of our region,” said Leighten.

Leighten and Schroth were not disappointed by what they found. Their exploration proved to be so fruitful that the pair is planning on mounting another related exhibition in a few years. This time, in the curatorial process, they only made it as far as Wilson, NC, and there are many more collectors that they still want to meet.

Past turnouts suggest that the public will not be disappointed either. “Almost every year we have had a photography show, and visitors just love it,” Livingston said.

Livingston offered high praise for the exhibition, explaining that it fits in with the Nasher’s educational mission and connects well to its permanent contemporary collection.

Konhaus also expressed great excitement about Light Sensitive: “It is expanding the notion of what photography is to a general audience, and that is exciting.”

“The show is about slowing down and looking,” said Livingston. “You can get really deep with it and ask what is real, what am I looking at, what is the truth, or you can breeze through and enjoy it. You can take it as far as you want.”

Light Sensitive will be on display at the Nasher Museum of Art until May 12.

On the surface, a group of kindergartners playing a noisy rendition of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” on their violins might just look like regular children causing a ruckus. But it’s actually a step forward in using art as a catalyst for social change in the Durham community. On Feb. 15 and 16, Duke and KidZNotes, a nonprofit organization for high-need children, will collaborate to host “Take a Stand,” a Regional Professional Development session on art, entrepreneurship, leadership and civic engagement.

Based in Durham, KidZNotes was founded in September 2010 in order to provide free classical music instruction to targeted underprivileged kindergarten through fifth graders in the East Durham area. Beginning with 60 students from three Title I Durham elementary schools, KidZNotes has since grown to 200 enrolled students from five schools. Each child begins with a violin and ten hours of instruction a week, and the instrument belongs to them as long as they remain in the program. Once students advance from the beginners level, they can choose to play from other string, brass and wind instruments.

“We have been fortunate in that people will approach us asking, ‘Can we have this program at our school?’” said Jennifer Blank, Development and Marketing Manager at KidZNotes.

“We work in partnership with the schools and several community partners who help point us in the right direction.”

KidZNotes is one of the first programs implemented in the United States that was officially inspired by El Sistema, a Venezuelan program founded in the 1970s designed to combat poverty, strengthen inner city education and foster positive decision-making. Entirely funded by the Venezuelan government, the program kick-starts literacy, social skills and perseverance in young children. It now boasts over 200 children’s and youth orchestras. KidZNotes is a much newer and smaller program, but it’s one of a growing number of El Sistema-inspired US organizations.

Blank continued, “We’re constantly trying to identify other programs, entrepreneurs and communities that are working toward the same goals to share and talk about using music, or art, as a positive social change tool.”

That’s where “Take a Stand” comes in. Through interactive

panel discussions, the conference will address the question of how to enact social change and to catalyze development through the arts, using KidZNotes and El Sistema as examples.

Hands-on and interdisciplinary, “Take a Stand” is meant to attract a wide audience, with sessions to actively and creatively engage teachers, students and community members. Over a dozen confirmed speakers will offer their various expertise, representing institutions at Duke, Bard College, the LA Philharmonic, the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship and more.

“We’re targeting people who are really interested in seeing how we can improve a community. We’re trying to be creative about how we look at social change,” said Blank. “This is a great example of bringing people together to share ideas to further the program, the movement, the idea that no one should be unable or left behind because of how they grew up. Everybody should be able to have the same opportunities for beauty, passion, community.”

Ken Rogerson, the Director of Undergraduate Education for Public Policy at Duke, will be a speaker at “Take a Stand,” emphasizing the skills and critical thinking taught in public policy relevant to the arts. “It’s what we call a development issue,” says Rogerson. “Usually when we think of development we think of international organizations helping those in poorer areas of the world. This is development locally—high-need populations and ways to deal with that. This is a different way of getting the public involved in the local, economic and social development in the community.”

Alexis Spieldenner is a Duke senior, SOL participant and harpist. She will also be a featured speaker from Duke at “Take a Stand.” She first attended the symposium herself in Los Angeles, and has had various opportunities since to immerse herself in the El Sistema movement in Durham.

“As a harpist, I have always been fascinated by the transformative power of music and its ability to serve as a catalyst for social change,” said Spieldenner. “In conducting interviews with KidZNotes parents and students, I found that music was far from an extracurricular activity for these families. It had become a fundamental part of their lives. Music has given these children a voice.”

needs, developing programs and cultivating partnerships. They particularly accentuated the importance of the university and its individuals in increasing levels of civic engagement through the arts.

“At the finale of the symposium in LA, the founder of the El Sistema movement noted that the future of the El Sistema movement here in the US would be heavily dependent on the university,” said Spieldenner. “I think Duke has tremendous potential to lead the way in creating opportunities for students to pursue their passion not only for music, but for social change.”

According to Foals’ latest album, Yannis Philipakkis is a badhabit, animal-like-you, cowboy with a broken crown. Foals have been known to create mathematical, precocious music. And yet, with Holy Fire, they have managed to be immediately accessible to their listeners without losing the intellectualism that has come to define them.

Throughout the album, Philipakkis laments the tedium of contemporary urban life and longs for something more dynamic. On recent single “My Number” he proclaims: “I don’t need the city streets, the creed or the culture now.” On the near-perfect “Out of the Woods” he attempts to escape spaces in which he’s become over-familiar, though he’s seldom successful. His journeys are marred by repetition: “time keeps ticking, time keeps pushing, time keeps rolling on.” My favorite track, “Late Night,” repeatedly thrums a single static bass chord so as to underscore Philipakkis’ paralysis. The song gradually builds emotion and becomes more violent before its final angst-driven guitar solo.

Valentine’s show celebrates diversity of love

Like it or not, love will be in the air this Thursday night at Motorco Music Hall in downtown Durham. The stage is set for nearly a dozen different acts, all in the name of Valentine’s Day, under the collective title of LOVE: A Variety Show.

“The focus of the show is thinking about, feeling and experiencing love. An exploration of what it is to intellectualize and feel love in the world,” said Nicola Bullock, organizer and producer of the show.

A concept as complex as love lends itself well to a variety show, where each performance will bring its own entirely distinct interpretation of the Hallmark holiday that launches many cynics into bitterness.

“It’s a holiday that has so much surrounding it, and honestly, I don’t know anybody who really likes Valentine’s Day,” said Bullock. “I think it’s really understood and marketed two-dimensionally. Love is totally not two-dimensional, but we all kind of internalize shame on Valentine’s Day about not being the right way with love, not knowing how to love, not being in a relationship. And if we are, it’s not heteronormative, you know, everybody has their own variation.

But really, Valentine’s Day is a great reason to think about and explore love in a way that’s more dynamic.”

Motorco, a downtown Durham staple, will act as a “vessel” for the show. “It’s a huge, beautiful space. A huge warehouse feeling, all windows at one side, high ceilings. It has established its own identity; I think it’s a very big space, a space to be filled with activity and people and sound and light,” said Bullock.

And it will be filled, not with only music or dance or poetry, but rather a combination of various modes of expression.

“People are hungry for something deeper in terms of

artistic expression. People want to be moved as much as they want to have a good time,” said Kegan Dean Rushing, a performance artist who will be providing one of the more secretive acts of the evening. And secrets, in this case, are exciting. “I found that when you put titles on things, that’s all people see. Other people’s interpretations leave the performance room to grow,” said Rushing.

UNC alumna Miss Victoria Belle AndrogeoFemme Hegemony—otherwise known as Victoria Facelli—will perform a monologue entitled “The Single Percent” about the universal tendency to define one’s own status, whether in or out of a relationship. As Bullock described, even the singles among us are at varying degrees of that singleness based on our behaviors. Someone skimming OKCupid profiles, fingers covered in Doritos dust, would probably be considered more single than someone at a singles mixer.

Other acts include Bevel Summers, a Chapel Hill band that promises to fill the room with energetic, lively blues music. Some students may recognize Duke faculty members Torry Bend and George Gopen as part of the evening’s lineup. Bend, an INDY award-winning puppeteer, is an assistant professor in Theater Studies. For her performance, Bend will be discussing a social experiment she’s been carrying out for the past year: as she travels around the world, Bend writes letters to strangers that include her Durham P.O. Box and encourages the recipients to reply. She will also be leaving a letter at Motorco that night as well.

George Gopen, an English professor currently teaching a course that focuses on T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets, will contribute to the evening with a reading of Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” “[In his reading, Gopen] embodies this kind of poem, this poem about looking back and reliving your life in some way,” said Bullock.

“It’s wonderful for Nicola to curate a show because she thinks this community needs it. I agree wholeheartedly,” said Rushing.

As Bullock said, “I want to create the kind of shows I want to go see. I’m interested in shows that make me think and make me feel. Thinking, feeling and experiencing are all one thing.”

This Valentine’s Day, you could do the ubiquitous dinner and a movie routine with your sweetheart or a group of single friends. You could sit alone in your room, cautiously avoiding the coconut crèmes in a Russell Stover variety box.

But for those seeking a little more substance and a little more vibrancy, LOVE: A Variety Show at Motorco Music Hall promises to be a night anyone would love.

“Thanks for balancing the age ratio,” whispered a bald, elderly man as I walked into the Chelsea Theater to see a Sunday matinee of Quartet. “You’re the only non-gray in here.”

I laughed and glanced around the theater. Indeed, it was a homogeneous audience, characterized by spectacle-framed faces, fluffy grey hair and shawl-covered shoulders. Evidently, I was not part of Quartet’s target audience. I was nonetheless eager to see Dustin Hoffman’s directing debut, starring Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly and Pauline Collins as old opera stars who are reunited at Beechman House, home for retired musicians. Brimming with some of Britain’s finest musical talent, Beechman House becomes a hotbed of drama when prima donna Jean Horton (Smith) moves in for her retirement and longtime friends, flames and rivals mobilize to prepare for Beechman House’s annual gala.

From the residents’ tongue-in-cheek rendition of La Traviata in the opening scene, I eased into Quartet’s charming, albeit overly sentimental atmosphere.

Between rehearsals for the upcoming gala, the elderly residents reminisce about their glory days, crack jokes about becoming “old farts” and gossip about new arrivals over afternoon tea on the terrace or play croquet on the estate’s well-manicured grounds. The egotistical director, Cedric (Gambon), conducts rehearsals wearing patterned robes and embroidered caps. (It’s “Cee-dric,” not “Ced-ric.”) And Wilf (Connolly,) the incorrigible old flirt, incessantly makes passes at the resident doctor and a young, doting French maid. He also frequently

pees in the bushes because, well, nature calls all the time. At Beechman House, retirement is a lively time indeed, and the egos and rivalries of the opera world are always simmering beneath the surface. Hoffman skillfully presents an eccentric corner of society, compensating for a flat screenplay that lacks compelling plot or character development.

Quartet benefits from overall solid performances by a cast of great actors, but some roles are limiting, and certain performances verge on caricature. Connolly’s performance as Wilf is amusing but heavyhanded. His jokes about the effect of old age on his sex drive eventually get stale, and he urinates outside a few times too many. Likewise, Gambon has some memorable moments as Cedric, but never fully succeeds in pushing beyond the boundaries of the “imperious director” stock character. Smith and Collins are, nevertheless, delightful to watch. Smith’s prima donna attitude is sharp and convincing—she orders around the Beechman House staff with the perfect blend of withering disdain for their incompetency and naïveté of the fact that she is no longer a star performer. Collins brings Cissy’s kindheartedness, constant chattering and endearing forgetfulness to life, and often steals the scene from Connolly’s incessant, plodding flirtation.

The showcase of musical talent in Quartet works to the film’s advantage. The cast is sprinkled with former opera stars and professional musicians, and the rehearsal inter-scenes help to cushion an otherwise inconsequential plot. All the characters (and their antics) are vivid, at least, and that’s part of why Quartet is fun to watch. Even in old age, we never really cease to be young.

Senior distinction project inspired by Bareilles songs

“How far do I have to go to get you? / Many the miles/ Many the miles.” These lyrics and melodies of bittersweet reflection, taken straight from a Sara Bareilles album, settle into the spaces of Brody Theater. The Miles, a senior distinction project written by and featuring senior Theater Studies Steven Li, centers on finding identities through changing relationships. The play’s title, along with its themes, allude to songs by Sara Bareilles that Li chose to incorporate in order to enhance each character’s transformation.

The Miles explores the conflicts that arise when love, duty and desire adversely cross each other’s paths. Three characters —Sam, Bobby and Emma—find themselves caught in moments of desperation and confusion as they try to determine where their true values and responsibilities lie. The play tells a coming-of-age story in which all three characters explore their sexuality, relationships and, in turn, identities.

In writing the play, Li drew inspiration from many of his own experiences. “Some parts reflect upon my time here at Duke, others reflect on the relationship[s] I have with people not at Duke: my parents, childhood friends and friends from home.” Li also plays one of the characters, Sam, and although he says that “all three characters are an extension of myself,” what drew him to Sam was that he “understood the character’s internal struggles between duty and desire.”

As for the addition of music, Li wrote The Miles with the intention of featuring songs specifically by Bareilles, an idea he had wanted to explore for a long time.

“The music of Sara Bareilles served as a springboard of inspiration for me, but is also an integral part of the text itself, being the way through which the characters process their thoughts and emotions at key points in the play,” Li wrote in an email.

The inclusion of music based on an artist’s personal experiences was a point of contention during the initial stages of the play. As professor of Theater Studies Neal Bell noted, “I think in the earlier drafts, there was more emphasis on the songs and each song sort of took away from the drama in the story.”

However, many of the songs originally included have been cut in order to truly connect the emotions expressed

content. “This is a very different story [from Bareilles’]; it’s more like her music echoes with this story,” Bell said.

Following up with this process, theater director and Duke alum Marshall Botvinick worked on connecting the songs with the spoken text to where it would at some points “sound closer to speech” rather than “text – song, text – song.” This fusion of speaking and singing is heard distinctly during one of the most emotionally resonant scenes, where two of the characters intersperse chokes and sobs with occasional utterances of Bareilles’ songs.

Similar to bands performing cover songs, the actors attempt to relate to the underlying feelings of each song, transforming Bareilles’ songbook into a soundtrack for the play.

“It all depends on the actors and how they use the song,” said Karen Wilmer, a senior who plays Emma. “There’s a danger in just straight acting and straight singing. If the actors can use the song in the same way that they can use the script, then they’ve done the job right.”

Indeed, these characters have every reason to connect so fiercely to the emotions voiced by the open-book Bareilles. The relationships conveyed in The Miles are insecure and unsettled, each equipped with the capacity to evolve. Just like Bareilles belts out her culpability in being deceived, Wilmer sings out her painful acceptance of reality in a beautiful rendition of “Between the Lines.”

As for opening on Valentine’s Day, “It’s perfect,” said Bell. “It’s not a date play; it’s about the difficulties we all wrestle with when we’re in love. It’s about finding out who you are and being afraid of being who you are.”

Botvinick added, “It’s very much a young play and I think some of the experiences chronicled in this play are recognizable to this generation.”

In the course of writing and producing The Miles, the cast has highlighted the unpredictable roller coaster of finding security of self by testing the limits of love. The travails and hardships outlined in the story only contribute more to the play’s title, which Li says is “so much about the miles we travel for love, both for others and for ourselves.”

The Miles runs tonight through Saturday in Brody Theater at 8 p.m. Admission is free.

Oscar-nominated shorts stand tall in 2013

It’s often easy to ignore shorts in the Oscar race. When films like The Hobbit and Les Miserables have run times of over two and a half hours, a two and a half-minute animated short can seem irrelevant, but shorts are an art form in their own right.

Short subject films have been a pivotal part of the Academy Awards since its fifth annual broadcast in 1932. Despite the fact that short films had existed since the dawn of commercial film, they did not emerge as a separate art form until the success of the first talkie, The Jazz Singer, in 1927. The introduction of sound, especially dialogue, into the films permitted directors to seek greater depth. Films became longer and more complex, leaving short subject films to grow into a category of their own.

Today, shorts are the hidden gem of the Oscar season, since most aren’t likely to be visible to a wide audience.

Yet, the smaller audience size grants a certain type of liberty to many filmmakers; because they aren’t trying to ap-

pease the studios, filmmakers need only heed their artistic sensibilities. Accordingly, shorts provide a snapshot into a filmmaker’s perspective, whether quirky, introspective or dark. The live-action and animated shorts the Academy has chosen to recognize this year are no exception as each embodies a very distinct and uninhibited characteristic of film that is usually absent in major motion pictures.

At the fifth Academy Awards, Walt Disney’s Flower and Trees won the first Oscar for Best Animated Short. With this year’s batch of short subject animated movies, we have had a return to the classics. All nominated shorts are completely absent of dialogue and barely any use of computer-generated images.

Disney once again produced a front-runner with Paperman, an homage to classic animation styles. Its popularity on YouTube shows that craft and charm can overcome a predictable plot.

Fresh Guacamole did away with plot altogether, instead focusing on wit and flawless claymation technique. A clear dud is Adam and Dog, which boasts beautiful, hand-animated imagery but is downright boring. It seems that the Academy was feeling nos-

talgic in its nominee choices, choosing classic animation and simplified story lines over spectacles of technology and complex plots.

On the other hand, the live action category has only expanded this year, spanning five different countries and five different languages. With such variety, it’s hard to call which short has the most potential for victory. One of our favorites is Asad, an otherworldy collision of whimsy and horror. Any short that elicits laughter amidst Somali pirates, starvation and dead children is a success. An estranged uncle and his Aubrey Plaza-esque niece are the centerpiece of Curfew, a well-acted masterpiece of morbid humor, sentiment and spontaneous dance sequences. On the other hand, Death of a Shadow (Dood van een Schaduw) reeks of unfulfilled potential. It neglects a compelling premise for an over-wrought love story and a wholly predictable ending. Regardless, each short embodied a different space of filmmaking and it is near-impossible to find any common factor beyond length. With no clear standouts, it’s anyone’s guess how the Academy will vote.

Nonetheless, shorts remain a safe haven for filmmakers to explore their artistic capabilities and express themselves without restraint. While short subject movies may not capture large audiences, they embody the nostalgia of film, the contemporary landscape and the future of storytelling— and that combination is not easy to ignore.

fully becomes a “cowboy with a broken crown,” he begins to notice elements of the natural world even within his London surroundings. He finds the openness he’d been searching for in the closing track, “Moon”: its lyric-less, keyboard-heavy opening has the delicate touch of moonlight through glass.

It sounds like the type of song that Foals has been working toward for a while, having lost the claustrophobia of the album’s earlier tracks “Inhaler” and “Bad Habit.”

Much of the album’s magnetism stems from the performances of drummer Jack Bevan. “Providence” would not be nearly as explosive without his energy, and the cohesion of the many threads of “Stepson” depend on his drum-line. His presence is noticeable in every track and is just one example of how the instrumentalists of Foals are no longer content to hide in Philipakkis’ shadow. Opening instrumental track, “Prelude,” offers a rare opportunity to hear Foals’ instrumentals without the distraction of Philipakkis’ stunning vocals. It’s one of many tracks on Holy Fire that illustrate that Foals isn’t a one man show.

No track on the album is as immediately breathtaking as 2010’s “Spanish Sahara,” but each has its own force. While each song is distinct, subtle motifs recur throughout Holy Fire and lend it an unlikely unity. By moving away from the mathematical obscurity of their previous two albums, Holy Fire could push Foals into international arena tours. It is an album that is entertaining, accessible, smart and, on the whole, deeply moving.
