40% Planners navigate DSG opposition

Duke admins comment on CollegiateACB

40 Percent Plan supporters are frustrated with what they see as an unwillingness of DSG leaders to communicate with them about the policy. DSG’s Executive Board—a group of 10 elected vice presidents and other leaders who lead committees of senators—is united against the 40 Percent Plan, which would allow students to allocate a portion of their activities fees to the groups of their choosing. Supporters of the plan said they think this indicates that the board is out of touch with the student body, trying to stifle discussion and unwilling to deviate from the status quo. Several DSG Exec members—primarily DSG President Stefani Jones, a senior, and Student Organization Finance Committee Chair Joyce Lau, a junior—have publicly fought against the 40 Percent Plan. In addition to hosting information sessions about SOFC, they have met with student leaders, written columns for The Chronicle and recently launched a Facebook campaign. Senior Daniel Strunk, one of the two architects of the 40 Percent Plan, said Exec is advantaged in the race because they

Greater attention has been given to cyber harassment following The Chronicle’s Feb. 14 profile on Lauren, the freshman adult film actress. In the media storm that has followed The Chronicle’s profile, activity on the Duke portion of online forum CollegiateACB has spiked. An unusually high number of posts have been made about Lauren in the past two weeks—including some with serious threats and personal information about her and her family. Current participation on Duke’s CollegiateACB forum is relatively high, with more than 900 threads and more than 7,000 comments, making it the school with the second most active forum on the website. Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta expressed disdain for the forum, but noted that Duke has no control over websites like CollegiateACB. “Most content on such sites, however vile, is protected speech and the owners of such sites could care less about institutional interests,” Moneta wrote in an email Thursday. “Further, most attempts to intervene just add to the publicity such site owners seek giving undesirable posts even more attention and

Abhi Sanka hopes to increase legislative dialogue as EVP by Shanen Ganapathee THE CHRONICLE

Sanka is running uncontested for EVP.

Sophomore Abhi Sanka is running uncontested for the position of executive vice president of Duke Student Government. Sanka has been involved in DSG for the past two years as a senator for residential life and has served in a number of internal capacities—including as chair of the senate judiciary selection process and a member of the Rules Committee. Sanka

said his vast amount of internal experience prepares him well for the position. “I really see the position of EVP as the best way for me to help the organization as a whole to move forward,” Sanka said. “I am running for this position because I really love Senate and I really want it to thrive.” Sanka wants to strengthen the connection between DSG and the student body, in particular, by increasing campus dialogue about legislative issues.

As EVP, Sanka wants the student body to add to the discussion before legislation is debated at Wednesday night Senate meetings. He called for a Facebook page where he would upload legislation and allow students to voice their opinions. Through these efforts, he hopes to increase senators’ awareness of student opinion. But Sanka has already begun his attempts to promote student body activity in See SANKA, page 12
