Greenwell, green light Cooper tournament tested Sameer Pandhare Beat Writer As redshirt freshman Rebecca Greenwell remembered the sight of then top-ranked South Carolina celebrating on the Blue Devils home court following a one-point victory, the Owensboro, Ky. native couldn’t help but reflect on one of the most painful growing experiences a young player will ever have.

With 17.9 seconds remaining in the contest, Greenwell lost the ball off a trap on the inbounds play, giving the Gamecocks the final possession of the game—a possession that ended with a buzzer-beating putback layup for South Carolina that dealt Duke its only regular-season home loss of the season.

“It was a huge learning experience and I’ve had a lot of those this year, but that one will stick with me for a while,” Greenwell said. “I’ve learned from my mistakes a lot this year, so I think I’ll carry that throughout the tournament.”

Heading into the NCAA tournament, the guard commonly known as “Becky McBuckets” by her teammates will be the key to a lengthy Blue Devils run in March.

On a team loaded with post players that

have dominated the paint this season, Greenwell is the perfect perimeter threat with her ability to explode to the basket and shoot the 3-pointer with ease.

The former Owensboro Catholic High S c h o o l standout has certainly had her share of ups and downs this season. In road games against Texas A&M and Nebraska, without the services of All-American Elizabeth Williams, Greenwell may have been thrust into a role that was a little too big for her just five games into her college career.

“The amount of details that go into everything and preparation was difficult to adjust to,” Greenwell said.

“The small things like shot selection and the amount of intensity that the college game brings were also tough.”

But with the return of Williams and Duke’s dominance in the post, Greenwell’s ability to space the floor and prevent teams from packing the paint has allowed the Blue Devils to become multi-dimensional.

Come tournament time, it’s about how you play the game.

Forward Kendall Cooper has transformed into an unrecognizable player, heading into the NCAA tournament having already scored 25 points in the postseason. The sophomore finished the regular season with noticeable success, stepping up to fill a gap left by injured classmate Oderah Chidom. Cooper has since elevated her play, starting half of the final six games of the regular season and shooting better than 50 percent in all but two.

Heading into the national tournament, Cooper’s play has never looked better.

“Confidence is key,” the Carson, Calif., native said. “You’ve got to send a message right away. You can’t take any team lightly. You never know who’s going to be a star player during these games, so come out strong.”

Her improvement didn’t end with regular season play—it took off.

The forward drained a team-high 21 points against Wake Forest in the ACC tournament quarterfinals, the same total as her previous three game totals combined. The stellar performance didn’t end with lightsout shooting—she went 9-of-12 from the field—as Cooper added three rebounds, three blocks and three steals in just 23 minutes.

“During postseason is when you become a lot stronger as a player—mentally and physically,” Cooper said.

“Lifting weights and going against your teammates in practice, it’s a different mentality when you do it in postseason than preseason.”

Cooper’s performance against the Demon Deacons might have seemed familiar to fans following the team on last year’s postseason stint. Taking on Winthrop in the first round of the 2014 NCAA tournament, Cooper scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds en route to her first collegiate doubledouble. Previously, the thenfreshman hadn’t scored more than seven points in a game all season and had averaged 1.7 points per game entering the matchup.

Senior Elizabeth Williams will make one last run with Duke in the NCAA tournament Taseen Haque Beat Writer As Elizabeth Williams stood with her teammates waiting to see what seed they would receive in this year’s NCAA tournament, she towered over them. Physically, Williams may not be the tallest on the team, but during the past four years she has become synonymous with Duke basketball, and her reputation stands taller than anyone around her.

Every year, the senior center has seen a similar storyline play out at Duke. She dominates in her performances and earns All-American status, only to see her team fizzle out before the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.

The question everyone has this season—as Williams becomes the first first four-time AllAmerica in school history—is whether this is the year the Virginia Beach, Va., native can finally break through in the tournament. “[Not getting to the Sweet 16 last year] will definitely be something we are thinking about,” Williams said. “Obviously [last year we did not] take things one game at a time and doing what we needed to do. It’s important that we think of that in the back of our minds.”

In her rookie campaign, Williams was the consensus National Freshman of the Year, winning ACC Rookie of the Week nine times after averaging 14.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 1.6 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

The Blue Devils were awarded a No. 2 seed, but with Williams nursing a stress fracture in her lower right knee during the tournament, Duke made it to the Elite Eight and fell to No. 1 seed Stanford.

In her sophomore season, Williams was a John R. Wooden Award finalist and also received ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors. She

scored 20 or more points in seven games and recorded six double-doubles. Although Duke again received the second seed in its region, the Blue Devils fell to Notre Dame in the Elite Eight.

Last year was a textbook season for Williams.

She started all 35 games, averaging 13.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per contest, and also hit a career-best 52.6 percent of her shots. The leading post presence on the team also received All-ACC First Team honors and Duke once again received a No. 2 seed with the right to host the first two rounds. However, late season injuries proved too much for the Blue Devils as they were upset by No. 7 seed DePaul in the second round.

This season was not without its trials and tribulations as well. Injuries to key players and surprise departures left the team understaffed. The Blue Devils are very young, with three true freshmen and one redshirt freshman on the team. More than ever, this Duke team has rallied around Williams, and her experience will be even more important during the tournament.

“This year, only a couple of us have been in this tournament field,” Williams said. “But we are all having a lot of fun and getting really comfortable playing together.”

Every year, it seems that Williams finds a new level of her game that nobody could have even imagined, only to have nothing to show for it at the end of the postseason. However, Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie thinks that this team could have what is needed to make it to the Final Four.

“This team is special,” said McCallie.

“Elizabeth has had some amazing games.

If she plays like she did against North Carolina, I mean when she decides that she’s going to hand it to people, I’d say that’s the best game she’s ever had.”

on the floor in the first game against North Carolina. She scored a career-high 33 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and willed the Blue Devils to a win in overtime in hostile territory on the road.

Although Williams has always been a menace in the post—scoring and rebounding—the part of her game that has progressed the most has been her passing ability. This season, Williams has the second-most assists on the team, and the impact of her passing has not been lost on the coaching staff.

“If [Elizabeth] gets double-teamed, as she does, pivot, find your teammate, and make them pay for that,” McCallie said. “I definitely think that her assists are impressive and important to us.”

Maybe this new facet of Williams’s game can be the answer to Duke’s woes in the NCAA tournament. But what is very clear is that the Blue Devils need Williams to hold nothing back if they want to win.

“At this point of time, you want to let everything loose,” said McCallie. “And hopefully [Elizabeth] can do that.”

Early adversity has Duke ready for NCAA tourney After losing three players to departure and injuries, the Blue Devils have responded Meredith Cash Beat Writer The Blue Devils have withstood adversity through what has proven to be one of the most difficult campaigns they have faced in years. Despite dealing with the burdens of a difficult schedule and numerous roster changes, Duke is a No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament and will host 13th-seeded Albany Friday.

After a season full of uncertainty for the Blue Devils, only one question remains: can they overcome these trials and tribulations and succeed in the most unforgiving environment in college basketball—the NCAA tournament?

“If anything, I think the adversity makes us a stronger team,” sophomore Kendall Cooper said. “After all we’ve been through, we deserve to fight and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. We’re going to give it all in the tournament.”

Duke knew of its first challenge before the season even began. Its schedule—ranked fourth in strength of schedule—featured 10 teams ranked in the top 25 when they played the Blue Devils.

of difficult games during conference play in a powerhouse ACC, the Blue Devils completed their regular season with four consecutive road games—including a matchup with thenNo. 4 Notre Dame—followed by a rivalry game at home against No. 15 North Carolina.

“Our body of work prepares us really well for the tournament,” head coach Joanne P. McCallie said. “We’ve seen a little bit of everything. I think we should’ve been [a third seed] for what we’ve done.”

Taking on this schedule would be difficult in and of itself—add on the numerous roster changes Duke had to cope with throughout the season and one starts to get a picture of just how challenging its season truly was. The Blue Devils began the year with 12 eligible scholarship players—including senior walkon-turned-scholarship-player Jenna Frush.

Going into the tournament, however, Duke has just eight eligible recruited scholarship players.

The Blue Devils lost both Lynee Belton and Oderah Chidom to injury during the season. Duke also lost freshman guard Sierra Calhoun—the rookie started all 13 games as a Blue Devil—who elected to withdraw from Duke for personal reasons.

“It’s the game of basketball,” senior Ka’lia Johnson said. “There have been injuries or something else going on really since I’ve been here [at Duke]. It just really shows what your team is made of. We’ve had different players on past teams and this team step up and play big minutes.”

In the Blue Devils’ 92-72 domination of Oklahoma Dec. 17, Belton had a careerhigh 10 points and four rebounds in her 12 minutes of play off the bench. With 18 seconds left, Belton collided with an opposing player, resulting in an ACL tear in her left knee and ending her season. Belton applied for a medical redshirt.

“In the last 18 seconds of a game in which she scored 10 points and that happens?”

McCallie said after the win. “I can’t even begin to understand that. It adds fuel to the fire. It makes me mad. She’ll handle it well and she’ll learn from it herself, but it

just doesn’t seem right.”

Chidom, who took on a starting role for Duke after Calhoun’s departure, suffered from shoulder problems for much of her season. She left two separate games—one Nov. 30 and one Jan. 15—after dislocating her left shoulder on impact plays. Her shoulder seemed to be recovering nicely until she dislocated it for a third time at Wake Forest Feb. 5. This time, however, there was no contact on the play. Chidom had surgery Feb. 19 and is expected to make a full recovery for next season.

The Oakland, Calif., native saw action in 21 games and started in six on the season. She was averaging 8.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, making her the fourth-leading scorer on the team. She hit 56.6 percent of her field goals.

“When one goes down, everybody has to step up,” Cooper said. “It’s not just one person. Oderah going down made everybody step up a lot. We owe it all to her now.”

Although the loss was devastating for the Blue Devils, Cooper immediately stepped up to fill the void. In Duke’s first contest following Chidom’s injury, the Carson, Calif., native posted 11 points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes of play.

The 6-foot-4 Cooper has improved since being cast into a starting roll. She played exceptionally well in the ACC tournament, scoring a career and team-high 21 points in the Blue Devils’ quarterfinal victory against Wake Forest.

“I’ve developed more,” Cooper said.

“I’ve become a lot stronger mentally and physically, and I think that’s very important coming into this tournament.”

Cooper’s successful transformation from sixth man to starter showcases Duke’s resilience through all of the adversity it faced throughout the regular season. Despite all the setbacks, the Blue Devils have managed to remain competitive with some of the nation’s best teams. Most notably, Duke took No. 1 seed South Carolina to the brink Dec. 7, falling by just a single point on a lastsecond layup.

In their most recent game, the Blue Devils stayed competitive with Notre Dame in the semifinals of the ACC tournament—losing only by six after staging a furious comeback attempt. In addition to dominating the conference in the regular season, the Fighting Irish went on to win the ACC tournament and earned a top seed for the NCAA tournament.

“That game [against South Carolina] should’ve been done, but now it motivates us” McCallie said. “We want them back.

We’ve come close with Notre Dame too—not just once, but twice. We played Notre Dame better than any other ACC team if you look at the stats. We showed progress there and the key now is to take it up a notch.”

So to answer the initial question—yes, Duke has proven itself resilient enough to take on setbacks and still remain competitive.

The Blue Devils have grown from overcoming these obstacles in the regular season, and the result is a team with less players but more fight. So long as Duke can play consistently to its potential, it will overcome the most unforgiving environment in college basketball as it did every other hindrance it has faced thus far—successfully.

two big threats,” Greenwell said.

Greenwell will make her first tournament appearance a year later than most would’ve hoped. The guard was forced to redshirt her freshman season due to a procedure to repair meniscus damage in her right knee.

Although questions about Greenwell’s health continued in her second year on campus, the 6-foot-1 guard has been the only player to start every game for Duke this season and leads the team with an average of 34.2 minutes per game.

“Being out there has been a blessing for me,” Greenwell said. “It’s completely different being on the sidelines and then getting to experience college basketball out there in a real game. It’s been a great season and I’m excited every time I get the chance to be out there.”

In order for the Blue Devils to get to the second weekend in the tournament, Greenwell will have to take care of the basketball against upset-minded Albany and—likely— No. 5 seed Mississippi State. The redshirt freshman has one of the lowest assist-to-turnover ratio on the squad this season at 0.7:1. Although the Owensboro, Ky., native is certainly effective as a spot-up shooter— holding the national high school record with 17 3-pointers in one game—Greenwell is capable of doing much more for Duke on the floor as a facilitator and floor general along with senior guard Ka’lia Johnson.

If the Blue Devils progress to the later stages of the tournament in Spokane, Wash., Greenwell could potentially match up with two of the best guards in the country in Maryland’s Lexie Brown and Oregon State’s Jamie Weisner, as well as the length of an athletic Tennessee team. Greenwell has struggled at times to get going offensively against teams that have relied on using just guards to take her out of the game—such as Notre Dame All-American Jewell Loyd, who limited Greenwell to 10 total points in the teams’ two matchups. But the guard is capable of impacting the game in a multitude of ways.

“Becca has to play smart,” Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie said. “You can’t box her into just shooting.

Becca needs to be a triple-threat player—she needs to be somebody who can shoot off the bounce, shoot off the catch and get assists when she’s doubled.”

Greenwell finished the season third on the team in scoring and rebounding with 14.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. But with the tournament approaching, the Blue Devils will need Becky McBuckets to take her play up another notch to make a run to the Final Four in the NCAA tournament.

continued from page 2 “My first NCAA tournament experience—that was great,” Cooper said. “To send a message like that as a freshman—I enjoyed it a lot. I hope that [freshmen forwards] Erin [Mathias] and Azura [Stevens] have the same feeling, coming in with confidence, because that was key for me.”

Cooper—as well as Mathias and Stevens—have seen a great deal more of the court this season, due largely in part to Chidom’s injury and another sustained by freshman Lynee Belton Dec. 17 against Oklahoma.

Since the Clemson game Feb. 8—the first game playing permanently without Chidom—Cooper has put together an average of 8.4 points across the eight games played.

The 6-foot-4 forward began her sophomore season with a 17-minute appearance against Alabama that featured eight points and two assists—a considerable contribution. Once Duke entered the tougher part of its schedule, though, Cooper found herself on the bench more often, splitting time with Stevens and Chidom to spell seniors Elizabeth Williams and Amber Henson from time to time.

“I try to be a positive role model for Erin and Azura as freshmen, because I know I look up to [Elizabeth] and Amber all the time,” Cooper said. “Elizabeth, she’s a great person to look up to, winning all these accolades, and Amber, she’s just a strong person—she never lets anything get in her way.”

Cooper’s first call to step up came Dec. 3 when Williams was forced to sit out against Nebraska due to an ankle injury. Although Stevens took the vacant starting position, the squad was down a big and had to substitute accordingly. Cooper scored one point by converting one of two free throws and stole the ball twice in the 60-54 loss to the Huskies.

It wasn’t until the final stages of the season that the sophomore forward found her spark. Her play did not lag after her performance against the Tigers—against whom she had 11 points and seven rebounds in just 19 minutes—and she finished the regular season against then-No. 15 North Carolina with eight points in just 14 minutes, shooting 3-for-6 from the field and draining both of her free throw attempts.

If the conference tournament is any indication, Blue Devil fans have only seen the beginning of Cooper’s potential on the court. With a year of experience to eradicate any first-time nerves, the sophomore can focus on her sharp shooting and tough defense to get Duke through to the next rounds.

“You have that one year underneath your belt, so confidence is key,” Cooper said. “It’s a time where you get to showcase who you are and what you’ve worked for…. People are going to try and knock me down, but I’m not going to let it happen—I’m stronger than ever.”

Cooper has not only improved herself but has set an example for Mathias, another reserve at the post position. The freshman saw few minutes early in the season but played 12 against Nebraska to help fill the hole left by Williams and was called upon again in February when Chidom’s season had officially ended.

Mathias has since seen a steady increase in minutes, aiding the rebounding effort and adding a basket or two from the field.

“I’ve had to step my game up and be ready to come off the bench and play a few more minutes than I did at the beginning of the season, so I’ve definitely had to change my mindset a bit,” Mathias said. “I definitely

will have to be focused for Friday’s game, and just be ready to give whatever I can off the bench.”

The Blue Devils will need everyone playing their best basketball starting Friday if the team hopes to extend its season beyond last year’s surprising second-round loss to DePaul. Duke has its first chance to advance Friday against Albany, and it will have talent that has developed across the season at its disposal.

“I see betterment with everyone,” Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie said. “Everybody’s stepping up, and it’s a great opportunity for us to play together and really play at a level that we want to play at.”
