Hottest headlines from Summer Session II For those who lost touch with University news during late June and July, there is a lot to get caught up on upon returning to campus. The Chronicle takes a look at some of the most noteworthy headlines from Summer Session II as the 2015-16 academic year quickly approaches:

‘Transformative’ Pratt Dean Tom Katsouleas leaves Duke Tom Katsouleas, dean of the Pratt School of Engineering, left the University Friday to become vice president and provost at the University of Virginia. His new appointment began Monday. In his seven years at the helm of Duke’s engineering school, Katsouleas oversaw a 62 percent rise in engineering graduate student enrollment, the launch of six new research centers and an almost 50 percent increase in external research expenditures to $75.6 million in fiscal year 2014.

“While I look forward to this next challenge, it is with a mixture of pride and sadness that I leave Duke and Pratt,” Katsouleas wrote in a letter to Pratt faculty and staff when the decision was announced. “This has been the most gratifying period of my professional career, and I look back and forward to Pratt’s progress with excitement.”

One of Katsouleas’ final acts as dean of Pratt was signing The Diversity Commitment as part of the recent White House Demo Day hosted by President Barack Obama. The commitment was sponsored by the American Society of Engineering Education and those who signed committed to providing more opportunities in engineering for women and other underrepresented demographic groups.

Senior associate dean for research George Truskey, who chaired the search committee that selected Provost Sally Kornbluth in March 2014, will act as interim dean while a search continues for Katsouleas’ replacement.

“What I really want most [in the next dean] is someone who is going to continue the forward momentum, and really put a premium on high-quality faculty hires,” Kornbluth said in a recent conversation. “Dean Katsouleas brought in some fantastic people who are not only having an impact on engineering, but I’m interested in people that will who also collaborate and have an impact across the schools.”

Katsouleas succeeded John Simon— who left Virginia to become president of Lehigh University and previously served as vice provost for academic affairs at Duke.

In addition to helping the University rise consistently in rankings of national engineering schools, Katsouleas will be remembered for increasing collaboration with other schools and the sheer number of programs for students.

In March, Katsouleas and his partners led a national initiative in which 122 U.S. engineering schools pledged to establish Grand Challenge education programs at their institutions in a signed letter to Obama. Pratt was one of the first schools to adopt the Grand Challenge Scholars Program, which is intended to empower students to address pressing global issues.

Duke radiologist brings class action lawsuit against university Dr. Danielle Seaman, an assistant professor of radiology since 2011, filed a class action lawsuit in June against the University and Duke University Health System regarding an alleged no-hire agreement with the University of North Carolina. Seaman claimed she was denied a parallel position as an assistant professor at the UNC School of Medicine due to an illegal agreement between

the schools prohibiting the lateral hiring of each other’s medical staff and faculty. According to the suit, the nohire agreement had the “intended and actual effect” of suppressing competition and employee wages, therefore violating federal and state anti-trust laws.

The suit claims the alleged agreement was formed several years ago by Nancy Andrews, dean of the Duke School of Medicine, and William Roper, dean of the UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine. It also alleges the involvement of unspecified senior administrators and deans at Duke and unnamed coconspirators from North Carolina. Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein LLP, the law firm that also prosecuted Google, Inc., Apple, Inc., Intel Corp. and other prominent California tech companies in a high-profile class-action suit, is representing Seaman. She alleges she had expressed interest in a radiology position at the UNC School of Medicine since 2012 before finding out early this year that “lateral moves of faculty between Duke and UNC are not permitted” as per a “guideline” set by the schools’ deans.

The lawsuit’s class-action status means it was filed on behalf of all faculty members, physicians, nurses and other skilled medical employees who have worked for Duke and North Carolina from Jan. 1, 2012, to the present. Seaman is seeking an injunction declaring the no-hire agreement illegal and restitution three times what all the employees have lost in the absence of competitive hiring between the institutions.

New-look O-Week awaits Class of 2019 Amrith Ramkumar The Chronicle Along with a new-look campus, a new-look orientation week is in store for the Class of 2019.

Due to the closure of the Duke Chapel, new student convocation and the talk given by the orientation week closing speaker will occur in different venues this year—Cameron Indoor Stadium and Page Auditorium, respectively—and several modifications have been made to the week’s schedule. Among the most notable additions are sessions on exploring academic pursuits, building an inclusive campus climate and preventing gender violence, Jordan Hale, director and assistant dean for new student programs, explained in an email.

New students will have more time to chat with their firstyear advisory counselors and resident assistants, a change that will hopefully make orientation less overwhelming, said senior Leah Mackay, FAC Board co-chair. FAC chats on values and getting involved on campus will accompany past years’ discussions on campus resources and the summer reading book. This year’s orientation will also include three more RA floor meetings.

Mackay said the focus will be on helping students get to know campus rather than presenting lists of academic requirements.

In addition to making orientation less chaotic, The Office of New Student Programs was also tasked with selecting a new closing speaker. Author and poet Maya Angelou spoke to incoming freshmen from 1989 until 2013 before she passed away in May 2014—one of Angelou’s students will address the Class of 2019.

Melissa Harris-Perry, who received her Ph.D. in political science from Duke in 1999, will speak in Page Auditorium Saturday night, continuing the partnership between the Office of New Student Programs and co-sponsor Delta Gamma Sorority, Inc., which also co-sponsored Angelou’s talks. Harris-Perry hosts a weekly television show on MSNBC and is a presidential endowed professor of politics and international affairs at Wake Forest University, where she took classes with Angelou as an undergraduate.

“She’s a great speaker, and she’s going to be able to engage the crowd,” said senior Sherry Zhang, FAC Board co-chair. “The fact that she is a student of Maya Angelou, it’s like a cycle, it’s like the beginning of a new tradition.”

Another special guest for this year’s orientation week will be Alison Bechdel, author of the summer reading book “Fun Home.” Bechdel will join the freshmen at the Durham Performing Arts Center Thursday evening for the usual session featuring John Brown, associate professor of the practice of music, and his Big Band, a guest appearance that has not occurred in the past.

Development of the new sessions on academic pursuits, diversity and gender violence prevention began in January after a campus committee—the Deep Dive committee— reviewed previous orientation week experiences, Hale wrote. During the sessions on academic pursuits, students will be allowed to register for various trips that provide a more in-depth look at some of the University’s academic facilities. Included are trips to laboratories such as the Triangle Universities Nuclear Lab and Canine Cognition Center, a behind-the-scenes tour of the Nasher Museum of Art and others.

Another change for the upcoming orientation week that is generating discussion among students is the hip-hop concert in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens Wednesday evening.

Sponsored by Duke Performances and the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, the concert will feature in-state artists Phonte, Rapsody and 9th Wonder. Mark Anthony Neal, professor of African and African American Studies, will host the event, which is limited to first-year students.

In addition to Mackay and Zhang, some members of the FAC Board will be at the concert to help run the show, but any other non-first-year students wanting to attend would have to sneak in, which Zhang said would be a good problem to deal with as an indication of the event’s popularity.

In preparing for the several new events and venues incorporated in this year’s orientation week, Hale noted that the administration has worked diligently to overcome the numerous challenges posed by on-campus construction and is expecting the same quality of programming.

“We have worked all summer to account for these adjustments and ensure parents, students and all other guests get where they need to be during orientation week,” Hale wrote. “It does not mean we are not asking everyone to be patient, but it does mean we have thought about this thoroughly.”

What to watch for in 2015-16 Take a look below at our guide to some of the storylines, people and on how the new players will perform, the squad will still be ideas to watch out for in the coming school year: gunning for its first bowl victory since 1960, having ended three straight seasons with heartbreaking bowl losses. The sting of the losses has stuck with the program and—assuming nothing goes too off-track—Duke should find itself in a position to finally nab that elusive bowl victory this season. With an updated Wallace Wade Stadium to boot, the Blue Devils will make some good entertainment on the gridiron come August.

Construction junction West Campus has long been known for its stunning Gothic architecture, but right now yellow tape and scaffolding are center stage. Nearly every one of the major buildings at the center of West Campus—be it West Union, the Duke Chapel, Page Auditorium, the Bryan Center or Perkins Library—is in the midst of or has recently undergone extensive renovations. Duke’s iconic athletic facilities are getting a makeover as well, with both Cameron Indoor and Wallace Wade under construction. As the various projects wrap up this school year and next, Duke will debut a set of new spaces that balance the integrity of its classic Gothic designs with more modern features. But although the payoff for future students will be significant, many current students feel that they’ve gotten the short end of the stick, due to convenient campus footpaths being closed, limited access to key facilities and hours of noisy work each day (and, of course, unavoidable scaffolding in any Instagram shot of the Chapel).

One of the most significant projects involves West Union—a complete overhaul of the student center set to cost more than $90 million. Formerly home to the Great Hall and various student and administrative offices, the new West Union will offer significantly expanded dining options and communal spaces for study and relaxation alike. “West Union was a disaster,” said Steve Nowicki, dean and vice provost of undergraduate education. “Really beautiful on the outside, dysfunctional on the inside. And it’s right there in the center of campus….

When people walk on main West Campus, they’ve always walked around and said, ‘My god, what a beautiful place.’ And then they’d walk into West Union...and they’d say nothing.”

Football school?

Prior to head coach David Cutcliffie’s hiring, Duke’s football program was among the worst in the nation. Of course, all that has changed in the past seven years as the football program was raised from the ashes —competing in its first bowl in more than a decade in 2012 and winning the ACC Coastal Division in 2013.

But going into the fourth year of what can be deemed a successful streak, Cutcliffe and the Blue Devils will have to get to a bowl without some of the players who had been the backbone of past teams. The Chronicle was the case of Lewis McLeod, who entered Duke with the Class of 2014 but was determined guilty of sexual misconduct by the administration and expelled a few weeks before his graduation date. McLeod is now suing the University for his diploma, claiming that the student conduct process for sexual assault is unfair. His case is set to go to court early in 2016.

The University’s policies have evolved over the past several years, notably with the elimination of the statute of limitations in 2012 — allowing students to report a sexual assault at any time in their Duke career rather than limiting them to a year after the event — and with the establishment of expulsion as the recommended sanction for sexual misconduct in 2013. In 2014, the University debuted a website explaining its policies and offering sample stories to illustrate consent. Students continue to advocate for changes to ensure the fairness of the process both for those reporting a sexual assault and those accused.

Race at Duke When Duke awoke on the morning of April 1 to the news that a noose had been hung on the Bryan Center Plaza the night before, the reaction was instant— students from all corners of campus expressing sadness, anger, fear and frustration. By noon, the Black Student Alliance was leading a demonstration where the noose had been found on the Plaza. By 5 p.m., President Richard Brodhead and Provost Sally Kornbluth were addressing more than 1,000 people gathered at the steps of the Chapel. The noose came on the heels of a campus incident in which several male students allegedly chanted a racist rhyme popularized by the University of Oklahoma’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at a black female student. The result was significant campus discussion on race relations and diversity at Duke. The conversation particularly gained traction on social media, with a coalition of students posting statements on Tumblr as the People of Color Caucus. The anonymous app YikYak showed an uglier side of the discussion, with explicitly racially charged statements at times. Although the dialogue slowed as the semester came to a close, it will not disappear in the Fall—with administrators looking at several proposals from students of color on ways to make the University more inclusive.

“There’s another round of campus discussion and campus action to be had following the racial incidents of the Spring,” said Steve Nowicki, dean and vice provost of undergraduate education. “We’re not done with that…. Students all got caught up with finishing the semester and the national championship came along, and the last thing you want is to have people sort of forget. Because everyone should not forget.”

A new leader for Duke Med For many students, Duke Hospital seems a distant component of Duke. But Duke University Health System is far more than Duke Hospital, and it’s a crucial part of the University—responsible for more than half of Duke’s revenue, tens and thousands of employees, three hospitals and what is widely considered the best healthcare in the state of North Carolina.

For a decade, DUHS was led by Dr. Victor Dzau, who served as CEO and president of DUHS and Dr. a. eugene chancellor for health affairs until washington departing last year. But now, DUHS has a new face—Dr. A. Eugene Washington, who came to Duke from the University of California, Los Angeles to assume the position this April. Washington steps into the leadership at a crucial time for DUHS, as the impact of the Affordable Care Act continues to be felt and federal research funding becomes harder to procure. “He’s going to be a key determinant in how Duke navigates that changing healthcare landscape,” Provost Sally Kornbluth told The Chronicle when Washington was hired. “These are problems not just at Duke but on a national landscape in academic medicine.”

Washington—the first black individual to hold the position—was selected after a nine-month search that examined hundreds of candidates, looking for someone able to meet DUHS’ needs in terms of not only medicine but also academics and research. All eyes will be on him as he guides the system through a changing environment for medicine.
