THE CHRONICLE
Throughout your job search, you will come across many people who will help you along the way – recruiters, interviewers, alumni, and other helpful contacts. A well-written thank-you letter is a great way to express gratitude, establish goodwill, and strengthen your candidacy – not to mention, it is an essential part of job-search etiquette. The basic rule of thumb is to thank everyone who helps you in any way. When used to follow up on employment interviews, thank-you letters should be sent within 24 hours to your interviewers. Hand-written thank-you letters on stationery are ideal, but, when following up is time-sensitive (ex: a recruiter who will let you know about their hiring decision next week), an email is better. Remember that the thank-you letter is not just a formality but also an opportunity for you to remind employers who you are and how you are uniquely suited for a position.

EARLY STARTING YOUR JOB HUNT — In the midst of the current financial crisis, many students nearing graduation are finding themselves scrambling to secure a job before their release into the real world. To avoid the dreaded fallback of moving back into your parents house, students should take full advantage of the wealth of resources offered them by the University to aid in their search. Most people’s starting point should, of course, be the Career Center. Located in 110 Page Building, the Career Center provides numerous advising services for both undergraduate and graduate students, and freshmen and sophomores may find the Career Center a helpful tool for finding internships and summer opportunities. Those looking for one-on-one support should schedule an appointment with a career counselor, who can help figure out the right steps for reaching career goals. The center also sponsors mock interviews and resume workshops as well as various events to connect Duke students with potential employers and mentors. Students can attend several career fairs—including ones specifically for those interested in technology and non-profit work—hosted by the Career Center throughout the year to talk to em-
ployer representatives and distribute their names and resumes. No student should overlook the University’s biggest networking resources—the alumni. DukeConnect, a database of Duke alumni volunteers willing to be interviewed about their careers by current Duke students, now boasts more than 3,000 participants, and the Fannie Mitchell Career Conference—held each year in early Spring—draws a large number of University alumni to speak with students about their respective industries in both panel discussion and casual meal settings. Both are great ways for students to network and get specific questions answered by experienced and helpful alumni. A computer is a great way to start getting involved in the job search, as the University offers several online resources to help students find something that fits their criteria. Career Search and Duke eRecruiting both allow students to search for networking and job opportunities all over the country. Although the job hunt may not conclude as easily for Duke graduates as they might expect, taking advantage of the University’s many offerings can help make the process much smoother.

“This new Career Center space is more effective for students, and also provides a more professional atmosphere for students to connect with employers,” said Fannie Mitchell Executive Director William Wright-Swadel. “In addition, the offices are more accessible for first-year students, which will help them get involved earlier and more often, an important aspect of career development.” Smith is accessible via the C-1, C-2, C-3, C-6 bus routes as well as the new Smith Warehouse Route from the main West Campus bus stop. On C-1, C-2, and C-3 from West Campus, Smith can be reached by getting off at the last stop before the self-expression bridge on Campus drive and the C-6 and the Smith Warehouse routes go to the building on Buchanan Blvd. There is no parking available for students at Smith Warehouse. The Smith Warehouse space includes wireless access, a business center, several comfortable seating and study areas, and a café.
