Students frustrated with plaza delay

Pratt dean Staff Reports The Chronicle Biomedical engineer Ravi Bellamkonda has been named the new dean of the Pratt School of Engineering, President Richard Brodhead and Provost Sally Kornbluth announced Tuesday.

Bellamkonda is currently the Wallace H. Coulter Professor and chair of the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, a partnership between the two Atlanta schools. He will replace Tom Katsouleas—who became executive vice president and provost at the University of Virginia last June—Aug. 1.

“Ravi Bellamkonda has a record of outstanding personal accomplishment and visionary leadership,” Brodhead said in a Duke Today press release.

The Chronicle Following news of delays in the full opening of West Union and the reopening of the plaza, students have expressed disappointment.

The West Union will open in phases, with its first-floor pub—known as Devil’s Krafthouse—debuting to the public Feb. 29, said Sarah Burdick, director of administration and special projects, in an article published in The Chronicle Jan. 21. The rest of the West Union— which has been undergoing renovations for two and a half years—is scheduled to open June 1. The plaza is currently being reconstructed and will not be reopened to the public until the crane is removed, probably sometime in March, Burdick said.

At the start of the West Union project, the plaza was scheduled to be reconstructed in December 2015, but Burdick said the major pedestrian walkway will be reopened in the spring, weather permitting. As a result, seniors have noted that they will not be able to experience the West Union before they graduate.

“Duke has spent the last three plus years saying how they’re working to improve campus for their students, but they’ve shown an extraordinary lack of regard to their current tuition payers,” senior Jesse Honig said. “Especially frustrating is the promise that every student will get to enjoy the new West Union, but continuing to push back and delay the opening hasn’t allowed that to happen.”

Other students have become resigned to the delays in this major construction project.

“I wasn’t surprised, since a couple of

the other construction projects on campus have been delayed,” junior Bemenet Getachew said. “It is still unfortunate though, especially for this year’s seniors.

At least we get to experience West Union for all of next year.”

Senior Emily Schmitz also said that the delays were unsurprising to her and that she was frustrated that her classmates would not be able to benefit from the construction.

The West Union project has faced delays from the start. During a Board of Trustees meeting in May 2013, the initial plans for the West Union were rejected, forcing a redesign.

New financial aid challenge Victim of Monday robbery funded by $23 million in gifts shares his side of incident Staff Reports The Chronicle Duke has received $23 million for a new challenge fund to support undergraduate financial aid, President Richard Brodhead announced Tuesday morning in a press release.

The Access and Opportunity Challenge was funded by a $10 million gift from Fred Sutherland, Trinity ‘73, and Barbara Sutherland, Trinity ‘75, $10 million from the Charlotte-based Duke Endowment and $3 million from various other donors. As part of the challenge, every qualifying gift for undergraduate financial aid will be matched.

Approximately half of the University’s undergraduate students receive need-based financial aid.

“The challenge aims to inspire others to support financial aid at Duke and reflects one of Duke’s fundamental values: access to a Duke education should never be limited by a student’s financial circumstances,” Brodhead

said in the release.

According to the press release, the cost of need-based undergraduate financial aid has grown from $43 million in 2005 to $99 million in 2015, an approximately 130 percent increase in cost.

Fred and Barbara Sutherland noted in the release that the diversity of Duke’s student body was one of the University’s best attributes and that the new challenge could attract more donors.

The Charlotte-based Duke Endowment provides grants for organizations in North Carolina and South Carolina that work in child care, health care, higher education and rural churches. Last November the Charlottebased Duke Endowment gave $5 million to the University for the Duke Law Faculty Challenge.

Financial aid is one of the biggest priorities of Duke Forward, the seven-year fundraising campaign that aims to raise $3.25 billion by June 2017. The Chronicle reported in November that Duke has raised approximately $2.9 billion so far.

CHIDOM SHOULDERING A BIGGER LOAD

After overcoming three shoulder surgeries, the junior has emerged as a veteran leader for a young Duke squad Mitchell Gladstone The Chronicle Nearly 12 months ago, in the early minutes of an ACC contest in Winston Salem, N.C., the Duke training staff was once again tending to Oderah Chidom.

For the then-sophomore, the third time was certainly not the charm.

After dislocating her left shoulder for the third time, one of the more successful freshmen in program history—Chidom shot better than 60 percent from the floor as a rookie, serving as a backup to All-American center Elizabeth Williams— was sidelined for the remainder of her sophomore campaign. She seemed to be hitting her stride right as the injury bug struck and was averaging 8.5 points to go along with 5.0 rebounds per game.

But surgery ensued in the following weeks and the 6-foot-4 forward was forced to watch from the sidelines as her team lost five of its last nine games en route to a Sweet 16 exit in the NCAA tournament.

Now almost a year later with the Blue Devils in the midst of a three-game winning streak, Chidom has a newfound role on a young team. As one of the two elder stateswomen, alongside graduate student Amber Henson,

the junior has grown into the talented, gritty post player that Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie needs her to be.

“Sitting on the bench for a couple of months when I was hurt really gave me a new perspective on the game,” Chidom said. “It was frustrating to not be able to physically

help my team in any way, but only be able to from a vocal standpoint. Then, seeing a lot of stuff from the bench and [hearing] what coach is saying kind of gave me a new perspective on how I can apply my game to the coaches’ game plan.”

In an impressive 71-55 victory Sunday

against North Carolina, the Oakland, Calif., native posted a season-high 15 points and a career-high five steals. The stellar performance was just one of many in what has been a comingout season, as Chidom continues to put her mark on this year’s edition of the team—which was in desperate need of leadership following the graduation of Williams and the arrival of five incoming freshmen, leaving a noticeable lack of experience.

“Oderah has been terrific,” McCallie said.

“She’s been at times inconsistent, but she also is evolutionary. She’s never been a vocal leader. She’s always been quiet. She’s always been somebody who did some good dirty work, but did it behind the scenes. Now, she’s got the opportunity to be a junior, to be a person that’s more vocal, to be a person that can be more demanding, and that can calm the team down and get them focused.”

No longer is Chidom hiding behind the curtains—though her impact may not always be as evident by gaudy numbers, such as those of sophomore Azurá Stevens, Chidom has been a key cog.

In the Blue Devils’ 15 wins, she is averaging 8.5 points per game—as opposed to her average of 7.7 points in the team’s six losses. Chidom has also been critical on the See CHIDOM on Page 5

Notre Dame, Louisville highlight 2016 schedule Staff Reports The Chronicle After breaking a bowl victory drought that dated back more than half a century in December, the Blue Devils now know the path they must navigate on their way toward a fifth consecutive postseason appearance.

The ACC released the 2016 football schedule Tuesday, filling in the remaining gaps in Duke’s slate. Head coach David Cutcliffe’s squad will face seven teams that appeared in bowl games a season ago, with five of those games being played away from home.

The Blue Devils will play their first game in a fully-renovated Wallace Wade Stadium Sept. 3 against FCS opponent N.C. Central before stepping right into ACC play. Duke will then host Wake Forest in the second week of the season before hitting the road for the first time in 2016.

The nonconference portion of Duke’s schedule includes three repeat opponents from 2015. The Blue Devils blanked the Eagles 55-0, but will have a chance to avenge last year’s 19-10 loss

to Northwestern when Duke visits the Wildcats in Evanston, Ill., Sept. 17.

The Blue Devils then remain in the Midwest, traveling to South Bend, Ind., to take on Notre Dame Sept. 24. The Fighting Irish remain independent when it comes to football, but are required to play a set number of ACC teams every year since joining the conference in all other sports in the 2013-14 season.

After returning home to open up October against Virginia, Cutcliffe’s squad rounds out nonconference play with a home game against Army Oct. 8. The Blue Devils routed the Black Knights 44-3 last year to improve to 5-1.

From there, Duke enters the meat of its ACC schedule, beginning with a Friday game at Louisville—the Blue Devils’ first game against the Cardinals as league foes.

After a bye week, Duke heads to Atlanta aiming for its third straight win against Georgia Tech, which will be looking to rebound from a disappointing 2015 campaign.

Duke returns to Durham to take on Virginia Tech Nov. 5 in a rematch of one of the team’s most exciting games of 2015. Behind the legs of Thomas Sirk, the

North Carolina comes calling just five days later on a Thursday night, trying to keep the Victory Bell in its lighter shade of blue for the third straight year. The Tar Heels put 66 points on an overmatched Duke defense last season in Chapel Hill.

Duke then rounds out the regular season with two more road games—a trip to Pittsburgh Nov. 19 and the regular season finale at Miami Nov. 26. The Blue Devils will have to wait all season for another shot at the Hurricanes, who defeated Duke 30-27 on Halloween night last season on one of the most controversial plays of the college football season.

with healthy teammates Erin Mathias and Mercedes Riggs, Chidom was anxious to get back on the court.

She erupted for 34 total points in the Blue Devils’ two exhibition matchups and even though her numbers settled back down to earth once the regular season opened, it was a sign of things to come.

“It felt really, really different considering I hadn’t played against anyone other than my teammates for so many months,” Chidom said.

“I remember the recovery process is so slow because my team was playing pickup all the time in the preseason and the summertime and I was never cleared to play—I don’t think I really started to play five-on-five until two weeks before Blue-White [scrimmage]. So just being able to go out there, I got really, really

defensive side of things, notching 1.2 steals per contest in addition to 15 total blocks.

Still, like most of the Duke roster, turnovers have plagued the developing leader. At 2.2 turnovers per game, including an ugly eight in a shocking Jan. 14 loss at home to N.C. State, there is room for improvement when Chidom gets her hands on the ball.

“Our team goal is to limit turnovers,” Chidom said. “Turnovers are going to happen…[but it is about] my ability to bounce back from poor offensive movement.”

excited and there was a lot of emotion and intensity finally playing again.”

Back-to-back double figure showings against Minnesota and No. 2 South Carolina in early December showed that even against stiffer competition, she would not wilt in the spotlight.

But, with a new season comes new expectations and McCallie needs Chidom more than ever.

Cracking open the Open Campus Coalition

L

ast Wednesday, the Duke Open Campus Coalition published an open letter to President Brodhead in The Chronicle, requesting a meeting with the administration to “reaffirm the Duke community’s commitment to preserving ideals of reason, debate and intellectualism at Duke.” Though we appreciate and value intellectual debate and the need to have open dialogue and conversation, we find a number of fatal flaws in their arguments and reasoning.

The first point that the coalition makes is that Duke is not implicated as an institution by the acts of bigotry on campus. The argument that Duke student activists have made is that Duke has a long history of being a violent place for marginalized students, and that same history shapes what Duke looks like today.

In fact, one of the sentences written in the statement is that “Good intentions do not necessarily translate into good policy.” Though intended to reference student activists, this statement simultaneously reinforces the fact that though administrators often have great intentions, that does not preclude broader racism, sexism and homophobia from presenting in our community.

The second point we disagree with. We have noted in the past that protestors often resort to drastic tactics as a result of prior failings. One of Duke’s most notable

historical moments, the Allen Building takeover in 1968, was in fact a disruptive act of student defiance demanding more from the institution. Though we by no means approve of some of the protesters’ actions we have seen this year, we recognize the range of approaches to change.

Regarding the definition of hate speech, we wrote in November of the need to better address hate crimes on campus and agree that great caution is required when dealing with speech.

The fourth point on education about bias, power and privilege, in particular, we take issue with. We have

The University is a place of education and knowledge; the reason that students choose to come to universities is to be challenged. In the same way that curricular requirements develop competencies important enough to be literally required of your time here, Duke’s community needs discussion of these complicated topics. The coalition fears mandatory “reeducation” classes, ignoring that we are constantly being educated and reeducated by the media, our classes and our peers.

There is a long history of academic research indicating

systems of oppression are real and have powerful effects, and it is no exaggeration that many students enter Duke never having had serious conversations with people who are vastly different from them. We firmly believe that part of being a thoughtful, critical member of society is engaging in dialogue related to these issues of power structures.

Parts of the open letter are ultimately undermined by something revealed in its final point. Though we acknowledge that quotas and requirements disguised as quotas are out of the question in policies, the argument advanced is either a straw man or making a troubling assumption that hiring a diverse faculty necessarily trades off with quality. There are qualified candidates of all races, genders and more and bringing diversity to departments and classrooms is part of being qualified when we are talking about faculty positions at our diverse institution.

Our analysis of the coalition’s arguments aside, we urge members of the Duke community to continue having challenging conversations on race, gender, sexual orientation and other forms of identity. We have in the past noted the trend to hide away from challenging discussions surrounding race and privilege through the usage of the idea of free speech, and the letter’s original commitment to an “open intellectual climate on campus.”

ast week, Duke Open Campus Coalition published an open letter to President Brodhead expressing concerns over perceived censorship and a campus climate that threatened academic freedom. These student leaders—though concerned about acts of racism, homophobia and bigotry—were unsettled by recent demands from student protestors. But while I laud DOCC’s support for an open and inclusive campus, good intentions do not necessarily translate into

political issue, it is a human one—and importantly, one that tends to be easier to address than other forms of oppression.

Corporations have picked up on this and are paving the way for wide spread unconscious bias and diversity training, largely thanks to employees— and presumably former college students—who push for institutional change. Companies like Facebook and Google have implemented their own initiatives so employees can better understand how

Specifically, I was troubled by the group’s opposition to “the administration’s recent announcements suggesting that Implicit Bias Training and a required diversity course may soon be institutionalized” and labeling of such efforts as “mandatory reeducation classes.” This is what I want to address in my column.

Implicit bias training is part of a larger effort to expand training on inclusion and cultural awareness. Duke’s Task Force on Diversity presented a report to the Academic Council last May with a series of recommendations to improve faculty diversity, retention and engagement with the administration and broader Duke community. Among other findings, the task force recommended implementing “proven methods for educating faculty and leadership to recognize and counteract existing biases” and support a climate of “inclusion and empowerment.” While the DOCC is strictly opposed to such mandatory learning, a growing body of evidence supports that this type of training and continued education is both needed and effective.

I think there is little dispute that humans judge each other by race, gender and certain other characteristics. To be clear: this has a very real impact on the daily experiences of minorities and other marginalized groups. Research has shown again and again that conscious and subconscious discrimination plays an active role in the workplace, where underrepresented groups have to work harder and be better for recognition and opportunities in an environment where white men are typically the norm. Discrimination may not be as overt as it once was—though at times it definitely is—but it is pervasive and insidious nonetheless. And that is where DOCC’s “mandatory re-education” argument falls short. Bias and subconscious discrimination is not some sort of belief system someone can choose whether or not to believe in—it exists regardless and with far reaching implications. It is not a

bias affects judgment and workplace outcomes.

Thoughtfully developed training programs combat bias by enabling people to “accept that biases affect them, stress their concern about the consequences, and assure people are willing to learn to replace those tendencies with ones that more closely match their values.”

If the top companies in the world can require their employees to undergo anti-bias and racial awareness training, then why can’t our university?

Training is not the end-all be-all to ending systemic racism and oppression, but it should be part of larger efforts to create more equal and just institutions.

The University is considering initiatives to include diversity training for faculty and awareness for students, and they should move forward with these steps.

Duke will not be the first elite institution to implement such a system, but it can be a leader among its peers and set the standard for other universities. The University already sets curriculum requirements, as well as mandatory online alcohol education classes and sexual assault awareness during orientation week. These topics are deemed so critical to the wellbeing and intellectual development of students that they are mandatory, and diversity education is no less essential. To be sure, there are questions of cost, format and grading that are important and must be thoroughly considered by the administration. But these concerns should not preempt action I hope that Duke can continue engaging with these topics thoughtfully and openly. But at some point, it is not enough to merely appreciate that we all have different opinions in this “marketplace of ideas.” Ideas for social change mean little if they aren’t followed by action—and at times action may first require a set of demands.

Why is Duke taking workers’ tips away?

ast semester I was chatting with a merchants-on-points delivery guy who lamented to me that, apparently, Duke was taking 18 percent of all tips he got doing deliveries to Duke. At the time, I was writing the “Monday, Monday” column and didn’t want to accidentally blow my cover by

am an American, Ashkenazi Jew. This identity is fairly common here at Duke, yet utterly underdeveloped in campus conversation. One of my favorite quotes is by the French novelist Marcel Proust, who wrote, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

My discussion is not intended to debase other real, legitimate concerns about race, but to shine a light on one that is so often invisible. There are many types of Jews, such as the Sephardim, Mizrahi, Esra’elawi

emailing around for information on the matter so I opted to pass on the story until I was free from my anonymous binds. But now here I stand once more—named, visible and fully accountable for every poor joke and misreported fact I type.

Once I began looking into the facts, things became more concrete.

Most of the food truck and delivery vendors I’ve spoken to this semester confirmed that Duke was taking about 17.2 percent of merchants-onpoints earnings—both 17.2 percent of gross sales and 17.2 percent of tips provided through the “Add Tip” feature on those iPods you enter your Duke pin into. Of course, I didn’t speak to all vendors (there are rather a lot of them) and so some may lose different percentages of tips or even not lose any at all (which is the case at the Loop Bar, for example). But if so, those lucky vendors aren’t really my concern. My concern is that Duke is taking anyone’s tips at all.

Let’s be clear here, people; for those workers subjected to this tithe, Duke is basically taking away every fifth tip they earn. (And yes, fastidious defenders of mathematical accuracy in on-campus publications—I am aware that 17.2 percent is not actually equal to 1/5. But the phrase, “Duke takes 43/250 of workers’ tips,” just doesn’t pack the same rhetorical punch, you know?).

I did contact Duke Dining asking for clarification on this matter, by the way. They basically said that any money to do with food points is all based on commission, explaining that what Duke takes goes toward covering Duke Dining’s overhead.

That’s particularly exciting because “It is against the law for the employer to require that any part of the tip received becomes the property of the employer,” even if that tip is allegedly going towards overhead.

Much as I’d love for this to be a career-making exposé in which I reveal that Duke has been illegally appropriating minimum wage workers’ tips, I doubt there’s any law breaking afoot. Duke is, after all, not the employer for any of the delivery people or food truck workers, and these vendors have all agreed in advance to pay a certain percentage of their sales for the privilege of selling on Duke’s campus. So I suppose I’ll have to settle for this being an exposé about Duke legally taking minimum wage workers’ tips.

And that money taken really can stack up. Look at it this way: to order merchants-on-points, the minimum

and many others, but this column will be mostly concerned with Ashkenazi as I ponder my own identity. To my readers, Ashkenazi Jews or otherwise, my hope is that my column may inspire you to reconsider your previous framework for categorizing a particular identity that is, in so many ways, not categorizable.

Growing up, I had always thought my status as a minority was obvious. At Duke, I was exposed to the idea that my Jewish roots took a backseat to my overarching whiteness, with my family’s ancestry traced back to Poland and Russia. Some even told me that, as a white American Jew, I was “the privileged of the privileged.” After reading an article written by an Ashkenazi Jew who lives in Israel that loudly asserts that Ashkenazi Jews are not white, I have become more attuned to casual micro-aggressions such as this directed toward me and have thought at length about who I am.

In many respects, stereotypes about Ashkenazi Jews mirror those of AsianAmericans. The “model-minority” myth about Asian-Americans rings all too familiar. Asian-Americans and Ashkenazi Jews are often overrepresented at universities and in high-paying professions.

In some respects, negative stereotypes about frugality and effeminacy have given way to positive stereotypes about success, hard work and intelligence. Yet, these prejudices can be just as damaging.

They can be particularly damaging when the ethnicity has faced historical racism, like how Harvard invented the legacy admission system during the interwar years to keep Jews out or how there are companies today who are paid to help Asian students seem less “stereotypically Asian” to get admitted to top universities.

They can be particularly damaging when individual voices are lost due to stereotypical ethnic success.

American, Ashkenazi Jews are also often referred to as members of the “Jewish Diaspora” which refers to the dispersion of Jewish communities after the Hebrews were expelled from the land of Israel millennia ago. Hereditary tests have revealed the Ashkenazi Jews originated in the Middle East and are the “genetic brothers of Palestinians, Syrians, and Lebanese.” Although the census still lumps Middle Eastern and North African identities in the ‘White’ category, many on campus would never call an Arab student white. Indeed, it seems so obvious— Arabs are clearly a distinct ethnic group, right? Yet this same belief rarely extends to Ashkenazi Jews, even though they originate from the Semitic people from the Middle East and even though they are closely genetically related to Arabs.

In other respects, Judaism is unique.

Yet, in the column runs on alternate Wednesdays. a popular near-campus pizza place might make thirty of these deliveries a night. Assume that this is a five days a week, fifty weeks a year job, and you have Duke nabbing $1,290 worth of a single MOP delivery person’s tips a year. To put that in more concrete terms, that means Duke is taking the equivalent of at least one month’s rent from these workers. $1,290, conservatively. Do you know what you could get for that much money? For one thing, you could buy 25 fifty-dollar “Duke Dining gift cards,” which I have recently discovered are a real thing.

Duke Dining gift cards: the gift of choice this Valentine’s Day for anyone looking to quietly encourage their partner to dump them.

Now, I don’t want to make out like anyone at Duke or Duke Dining is actively enforcing this policy. I find it somewhat unlikely that the everpleasant President Brodhead is sitting in his office maniacally twiddling his moustache while fanning himself with the ill-gotten gains of The Great Food Point Swindle. As some of the vendors I spoke to suggested, it may well be that the current payment verification system simply isn’t set up in such a way that it can differentiate money gained through tips from money gained through sales. But what I’m getting at is that that needs to be fixed.

For one thing, I think we as students really should have been told about this. We’re already required to give Duke a large amount of money for food points and for the university to then re-appropriate some of the product they give us in return through the shady mechanism of tip-tithing— and to do so without telling us, no less—is completely indefensible.

But more important is the fact that this tip money would be of value to the workers way more than it could be for Duke. For the university to so miserly insist on taking not only 17.2 percent of gross sales but 17.2 percent of tips given as a gift directly to delivery people and food truck workers is positively Scrooge-esque.

Duke: you are a university with a $2 billion yearly budget. If you’re really that interested in scrounging money back, I daresay you’d do better by restraining yourself from building $2 million glass boxes ever y so often than by taking 20 cents from the guy who just delivered my Cinna-Zos.

Middle East, people also have strong tribal identities that often correlate to an ethno-religious one. Being a “part of The Tribe” is a colloquial way to refer to a heritage of a common Jewish ancestry.

For a Western country like America to impose its own categories on a tribal identity which is intrinsically quite foreign to singular notions of “race” and “ethnicity” is like fitting a square peg into a round hole. It just doesn’t work.

Those who insist on constraining a tribal identity are erasing and delegitimizing

defining characteristics because it doesn’t fit in with their preconceptions about what identity can be. Indeed, as the article which prompted my selfreflection states, the Middle Eastern Pashtun people, who have pale skin, would never identify as white.

Not long ago, I was having a conversation about racial identity and privilege with a female person of color. She is proudly Mexican and identifies strongly with the Latinx community and as a person of color. In the United States, many argue that racial identity consists solely of the hue of one’s skin so that, regardless of what you actually are ethnically, you are de facto viewed, lumped together and stereotyped because of your skin. My own olive skin was undeniably darker than her skin. If skin color is the sole determinant, as many claim, I wonder if this means she is not a person of color or that I am a person of color or possibly both. But, and this is important, it cannot be neither. Again, I recognize that there is racism toward those with darker skin and that this bigotry is too often sadly hard-wired into people and various parts of society, and I do not question ingrained xenophobia. I only question its implications for Ashkenazi Jews such as myself.

Finally, it should come as no surprise that Ashkenazi Jews were, and are, subjected to fierce racism and institutional discrimination. Pogroms, the Inquisition, the Holocaust, Ghettoization, periodic expulsion and other historical acts of anti-Semitism are well-known. These documented instances of hatred are ingrained in Jewish history. Yet even today, anti-Semitic micro-aggressions exist and are seemingly “invisible.” These include assumptions of Jewish control, power, money or connections, accusations of dual loyalty, denying Jews status as a minority, the blood libel and denial of anti-Semitism. Please don’t tell me that anti-Semitism doesn’t exist anymore when a member of my synagogue from back home, who wore a yarmulke daily, eventually transferred from his liberal arts college when he felt there was no space for him there. These anti-Semitic stereotypes, which continue to exist today, have for millennia characterized a peculiar but potent racism that is at once similar and distinct from traditional racism.

Are Ashkenazi Jews white, closely related to its other European counterparts like the British, Germans or Italians? Are Ashkenazi Jews people of color, closely related to other Middle Eastern groups? Maybe they are somewhere in between, subjected to institutional racism but,due to their pale skin, are not people of color. Or maybe they are something completely different.

I’d like to see Duke focus on the crux of the issue with burglaries on campus and security.

When I ran down to Edens [after the robbery], there was a security guard that was right there, and I was also within sight of a help light. But I could do nothing about it. There were two chrome guns to my head as I’m looking at the help sign. Hopefully, maybe we’ll look into a gated campus one day in the future. I think that might be helpful in reducing things like this.

It’s pretty scary. I could see lights on in the dorm and these people had guns pointed into my face. It was crazy.

I never really thought this would happen.

Bellamkonda graduated from Osmania University in India and received his PhD from Brown University, before doing postdoctoral work at the Massachusetts

Institute of Technology. He taught at Case Western Reserve University, then transitioned to the Coulter Department in 2003 and served as vice president for research at Georgia Tech from 2010 until 2013.

The president of the American Institute for Biological and Medical Engineering, Bellamkonda focused on using biomaterials to support the nervous system and combat brain tumors in his research. He noted that he is looking forward to taking over for interim dean George Truskey.

“I am excited about the Pratt School’s future, and our ability to continue building an innovative engineering school where scholarship, inquiry and entrepreneurship are valued,” Bellamkonda said in the release. “Pratt’s faculty are thought leaders in areas of critical importance to our economy, security, health and the environment.

We can help shape the future by fostering an experiential engineering curriculum that moves away from a ‘content-mastery’ emphasis, toward a ‘learning-mastery’ mind-set.”

Pratt experienced significant growth under Katsouleas, who during his seven-year tenure oversaw an increase in external research expenditures, the founding of six new research centers and a 62 percent increase in engineering graduate student enrollment.

The school also consistently ranked highly among the best undergraduate engineering engineering programs— in 2014, it was ranked No. 18 on the annual list compiled by the U.S. News and World Report.

“What I really want most [in the next dean] is someone that is going to continue that forward momentum and really put a premium on high-

quality faculty hires,” Kornbluth told The Chronicle in September.

GENTILE from page 3 suburban Long Island and I was very academic-minded, but I was also very sports-minded. Coming to Duke to study and also play field hockey at such a high level was the perfect combination for me.

But then, once I actually got on campus and [started] interacting with people from all around the world and talking about such incredible worldliness, I think I changed just by the exposure to such talented, smart people. I think it prepares you then for when you graduate and you want to make a difference in New York City. You have a little more confidence because you already feel like you’ve interacted with the best and the brightest that I can now do that in my professional life.

TC: What is your favorite Duke memory?

LG: I just loved my field hockey team and some of my best friends for life are [from that] team. [My favorite memory is] probably making the NCAA tournament for the very first time as a unit. The first time Duke ever made the NCAA tournament was my junior year.

That was just a huge accomplishment.

And we worked so hard for it, so that’s certainly one. And a more visceral one is when Laettner hit the shot against Kentucky. We were all watching the game at a Central Campus apartment and as soon as they won and he hit that shot— you couldn’t believe it—we all literally ran out of the apartment, ran through the Duke Gardens to West Campus…so we could celebrate with everybody.
