Buses readjusted following complaints

Edens residents enjoying new amenities Claire Ballentine The Chronicle New improvements to Edens Quadrangle means that Pitchforks’ food may not be the only reason to wander past Keohane. The construction work—which began in May—has aimed to make Edens a more desirable place to live. Completed renovations to the area include a two-story glass structure added to the common room in Edens 1C, a glass entry portal, updated interior work and, most recently, a new exercise facility. Rick Johnson, assistant vice president for student affairs for Housing, Dining and Residence Life, which is sponsoring the project, said that students have responded positively to the changes. “The reaction has been overwhelming,” he said. “We knew it would be spectacular, but we didn’t know there would be such strong reactions.” Johnson explained that the project included upgrades to kitchens, common rooms and laundry rooms, which were completed during the summer. A hightech gaming room and a first floor study space in the glass addition are still under construction but will hopefully be finished by October, he added. The project was previously scheduled to be completed by the beginning of November. The exercise facility in Edens 2A officially opened Aug. 31 with an open house featuring food and demonstrations of the

Campus. “I am excited about the possibilities.” Some students have said that the Edens gym does not offer the same range of equipment as other facilities on campus. Sophomore Jason Ng noted that

In response to complaints about the bus system, Duke Parking and Transportation Services announced changes to bus operations that will go into effect starting Tuesday. The changes, released on the PTS website Saturday, add additional service to the C4 route serving West and Central Campus during an hour and a half period in the mornings and retime the C3 route so it runs at peak class-change times. Senior Keizra Mecklai, president of Duke Student Government, said DSG lobbied for an updated schedule in response to student feedback. “It was clear that the current system was not serving the students correctly,” she explained. She met with Alison Carpenter, transit planner and transportation demand manager, Thursday to discuss students’ concerns based on a DSG survey circulated last week. The survey received 413 responses: 51 percent of respondents preferred adding more C4 and C5s, and 42 percent preferred returning to the previ-

workout equipment. Johnson noted that the fitness area includes two rooms—one for workout machines and a studio designed for group exercise classes. “I think this is a great partnership between HDRL and the recreation center,” said Debbie Lo Biondo, associate dean for West

Geer Street Garden revealed as first West Union vendor Samantha Neal The Chronicle The countdown to the opening of West Union just got a little more exciting. Geer Street Garden—a restaurant and bar located in Durham—will be operating in the Devil’s Krafthouse, the pub which will be located on the ground floor of the West Union. Director of Dining Services Robert Coffey said that the eatery—scheduled to open in February 2016—will serve traditional pub food along with healthy options. In addition, he noted that the Devil’s Krafthouse will feature indoor and patio seating, foosball tables and an in-

door performance stage. “We really hope to have a space that’s known for having great food and having a great social atmosphere,” Coffey said. The West Union has been under construction since Fall 2013 and plans for its renovation had been in the works since 2007. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by Fall 2016. Several seniors said they were eagerly anticipating Geer Street Garden and setting foot in the West Union for the first time since their freshman year. “I think that [seeing the West Union completed] makes me more excited than any particular vendor being avail-

able,” senior Kathy Zhu said. “At this point, my class had given up on seeing the new West Union, so it’ll be really nice to see at least part of it.” Others students said they are excited simply to have a new eatery on campus. “It will be nice to have a more central dining location and have more dining options,” sophomore Paget Barranco said. Some students also noted that Devil’s Krafthouse will be similar to the Loop—currently the only location on West Campus where it is possible to buy alcohol on food points. See GEER STREET on Page 12
