Duke students support Clinton, but some groups hesitate Kenrick Cai The Chronicle Hillary Clinton led Donald Trump by nearly 70 points in a representative poll of Duke undergraduates.

The poll, which had a 41.2 percent response rate, showed 75.7 percent of students intend to vote for Clinton, compared to 6.4 percent who say they intend to vote for the Republican nominee.

Among fraternity members and students who identified as Republicans, Clinton’s support was notably lower than in the general student body. Approximately 62.1 percent of fraternity members said they would vote for Clinton. Eleven percent said they would vote for Trump, and 12.6 percent said they would opt for Johnson.

In 2012, Romney earned 37.5 percent of fraternity members’ votes.

Among Republicans, Trump edged Clinton out with 32.6 percent of the vote compared to Clinton’s 31.2 percent.

The Interfraternity Council and Colin Duffy, the president of Duke College Republicans, could not be reached for comment.

The representative poll, conducted with assistance from the Office of Institutional Research, was sent to one-third of undergraduates, or 2,230 students, via email and was open Oct. 5 - Oct. 12 “A one-third random sample is gigantic and to have a 40 percent response rate I think gives you a lot of confidence that you’re getting a reasonably good reflection of Duke students,” said David Rohde, Ernestine Friedl professor of political science.

Clinton’s percentage is the highest

among any presidential candidate since The Chronicle began polling about the presidential election in 2008. Surveys in those years showed President Barack Obama winning 74.8 percent of the student vote in 2008 and 65.6 percent of students supporting him in 2012.

“I would bet that the people who favored Obama in previous polls were more strongly positive about him than people who favor Clinton are about her,” Rohde said. “It’s just that it’s measured against the alternatives.”

Support for Trump is much lower than for previous Republican nominees.

Among Duke students, John McCain and Mitt Romney polled at 23.3 percent and 26.5 percent, respectively. “[Trump’s support rate] is even smaller than I thought it would be,” Rohde said.

“Duke students aren’t all automatically liberal, but it would take a different kind of Republican to appeal to them. Neither McCain nor Romney were candidates who alienated voters the way that Trump has.”

Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson received 3.7 percent of the overall vote, while 0.9 percent of students said they intended to vote for someone other than Trump, Clinton or Johnson, and 6.7 percent of voters said they were undecided.

The remaining 6.7 percent of respondents said they did not intend to vote for any candidate. Since the poll sampled all undergraduates, this may include international students.

“Especially from a Democratic point of view, we are the party who really just wants higher voter turnout,” said junior Amy Wang, president of Duke for Hillary and a vice president of Duke Democrats.

“It would make me incredibly happy to hear that 94 percent of eligible voters

vote, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a lot lower of that.”

Reflecting on-campus support for Clinton, the most common words students used to describe the former secretary of state were primarily positive, while Trump’s were primarily negative.

The top three words used to describe Clinton were ”experienced,” “qualified” and “strong,” but they were followed by unfavorable descriptors—”liar” and “corrupt.”

“It’s very easy for the Republican Party to then spin [her political actions] into whatever they feel like or for Donald Trump to come by and just call her a liar when people are already kind of tired to hear that to begin with,” Wang said.

All five of the most commonly used words for Trump were negative: “bigot,” “racist,” “idiot,” “crazy” and “asshole.”

Although Clinton leads Trump by 69.5 percentage points on campus, the race is much closer statewide, where current polls from FiveThirtyEight show Clinton up 48.5 percent to Trump’s 45.8 percent.

The growing support for the Democratic candidate may also reflect an increase in liberal-leaning students on campus. Of students who disclosed their party affiliation, 58.8 percent said they aligned closest to the Democratic Party. Comparatively, 45.3 percent of students said they were registered Democrats in 2012.

In contrast, 18.5 percent of respondents in 2012 said they were registered Republicans. Students that aligned with the Republican Party made up 15.9 percent of the respondents in the 2016 poll.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if some Republicans did say that this is such a liberal campus that they would feel worried about being Republican,” Wang

said. “There is a dialogue that needs to be established because ultimately, we’re not looking for people to support us, we’re looking for people to genuinely feel strongly about politics, period.”

Democrats were substantially more united behind their nominee, with 94 percent of students who identified as Democrats saying they would vote for Clinton. No Democrats intended to vote for Trump.

But even most who don’t intend to vote for Clinton expect her to win—94.3 percent said they thought she would be our next president. Just 5.5 percent of students expect a Trump victory, and the remaining 0.2 percent—two respondents—predicted an upset victory for Johnson.

Still, the poll data should not be taken at face value, warned David Banks, professor of the practice of statistics.

“The people who decided to respond are not representative of the people who did not respond,” Banks said. “Sixty percent of the people did not return their forms. Why not? They may be systematically different from the people who did return their forms.”

The demographics of poll respondents did, however, roughly correspond to the demographics of Duke as a whole.

Banks noted that while the response rate was higher than most government surveys, non-respondent voting patterns may be different.

“If people who responded first may have been, for example, pro-Clinton, and people who responded late are more pro-Trump, then you can extrapolate that the people who did not respond might be more proTrump than you’d expect,” he said.

‘Get your a** out there and make a difference’ Fighting political apathy on campus

Diane Hu The Chronicle In 2008, when the youth vote helped turn North Carolina blue, only 36 percent of Duke students cast ballots.

Four years later, Duke was ranked one of the top five most politically apathetic colleges in the country, according to The Huffington Post. The other schools at the top of the list included the College of the Ozarks in Missouri, Ohio Northern University and the University of Scranton. This apathy may signal a stark difference between feeling and action at Duke—even in the landmark 2008 election.

“It’s kind of hard for me to fathom how that could have been,” said President Richard Brodhead, referring to the results of the Huffington Post ranking.

He added that in his experience, students care about “the underlying social issues” and that translates to a preference in political party. Some students involved with on-campus political groups find the lack of political action on campus unsurprising, however.

Senior Adam Lemon, former chair of Duke College Republicans, said that many people he knows are unable to find the time for politics.

“So many people care about [the election],” Lemon said. “But whether through sheer human forgetfulness, a busy time schedule, apathy or what have you, there’s just a number of reasons why people, regardless of how enthusiastic they are about the election, don’t turn out.”

An accurate descriptor?

In 2008, it may have been true to call Duke apathetic just by looking at the numbers, as Duke students voted at a rate more than 10 percentage points lower than youth in the nation. But it’s not clear whether “apathetic” remains an accurate descriptor of Duke students.

“I guess it depends on what you define as apathetic,” said junior Amy Wang, vice president of Duke Democrats. “It’s hard to say that you do not have an opinion on this election because let’s be serious—this election has been very polarizing and very controversial.”

Wang described Duke as a very opinionated campus, but divided in terms of involvement. She also agreed with Lemon that a decision not to vote often has to do with students’ schedules.

“It’s kind of one or the other,” Wang said—either you’re involved actively and deeply, or not at all.

Visible measures of political engagement are not always evident. John Aldrich, Pfizer-Pratt university professor of political science, remains optimistically skeptical.

“I don’t see rallies,” he said. “I don’t see signs, I don’t see people wearing buttons so it doesn’t look like that many people are engaged—but I haven’t done my polling.”

Although Aldrich admits he doesn’t know what calculations went into the Huffington Post’s ranking, he said that Duke has “one of the more engaged student populations” he has seen. Despite the lack of visible activism, Aldrich said he believes that the political engagement of Duke students is at least on par with engagement on other campuses.

“They’ve got it wrong,” he said,

confidently dismissing the Huffington Post’s conclusion.

Why students care—or don’t The professors and student activists Towerview interviewed shared several common theories about why students choose to get involved in politics. Many said this election in particular has changed how Duke students think about politics.

“I think it really depends on the resonance that develops between politics and student interest,” said William Chafe, Alice Mary Baldwin professor emeritus of history.

He pointed out that Obama “did a good job of activating students and speaking to their idealism” in 2008. When asked about the difference between then and now, Chafe was blunt—“I don’t think that has happened in this election at all.”

A site to see Although student efforts to increase voter turnout through voter registration drives and the like have been featured

on campus in the past weeks, the single most prominent controversy has concerned the campus early voting site. Situated in West Union for the last election, early voting has now been moved to the Devil’s Den on Central Campus, and many are concerned the relocation will negatively impact voter turnout because fewer students will travel to Central.

“I think it’s definitely going to be an extra consideration for a lot of people going out to the polls,” Wang said.

Larry Moneta, newly-reappointed vice president for student affairs, said he thought the presence of an early voting site had increased voter turnout in the 2008 and 2012 election cycles.

He pushed back against concerns that a Central Campus voting site would depress turnout, saying that the issues involved in an election would get students to turn out regardless of where they have to vote.

“I don’t think [the site change is] going to be the dominant issue,” he said. “I think the dominant issue is going to be far more the characteristics of the candidates.”

He added that the change in early voting—which takes place starting Thursday until Nov. 5.—was “strictly logistics.”

“When you take into account the requirements the [Durham County Board of Elections] provides, handicap accessibility, parking, so many feet from the nearest parking area […] there were just very, very few places that would work, and Devil’s Den was one of the only ones we could come up with,” he said.

He explained that some students attend recruitment events less out of genuine interest than because “everyone else is going so you feel like you have to.”

“That means that more and more people are going, so more and more people get sucked in,” he said. “After a while, it’s just as good as if no one went.”

‘We’re looking for people that are really, really smart’ Andy Crewson, Bain’s recruiting team lead at Duke, explained that the company casts a wide net when recruiting on campus.

The lists of organizations that Bain reaches out to on campus is “really long,” said Crewson, Trinity ’09, noting that it includes finance and consulting clubs, some selective living groups—though he did not say which—and Duke’s Association of Business Oriented Women.

“We basically try to communicate and work with any group that we can have a conversation with,” he said.

He added that he could “qualitatively say that the interest in consulting and Bain specifically is quite high” but said that he could not give specifics on the number of applicants or positions offered.

“Duke is certainly a place we’ve had enormous success from,” he said. “That’s

why we put a lot of time and effort into getting the best and the brightest to come to Bain. We as a firm put an incredible amount of resources behind that.”

Crewson, who majored in economics and religion at Duke, also said that Bain looks at applicants across a variety of majors.

“What we’re looking for at the end of the day isn’t so much about what you majored in, but we’re looking for people that are really, really smart and have the raw horsepower to do the job and to crack tough problems,” he said.

New consultants will learn the business specifics, he explained, after they arrive at Bain.

Marie—who noted that she thinks consulting is a great career for people who are really interested in it—said that the rhetoric companies use has an impact on potential applicants.

She said that when consulting firms say they don’t care what major you are and just “want smart, logical thinkers,” then it gives students the impression that consulting is the “thing to do” no matter what they are interested in.

“Which it’s not, at least not for everyone,” she added.

Monetizing a liberal arts degree?

Rimanyi, who is originally from Budapest, Hungary, worked for the Hungarian government this summer and said he wants his career to include travel and communication between the public and private sectors. He became interested in consulting because he thought it might allow him to explore his variety of interests.

Generally speaking, Rimanyi said, he has “two groups of friends” who are pursuing careers in consulting.

“Then, I have the political science people who feel like this is the only way they can monetize that kind of degree,” he said.

Rimanyi added that there is a sense on campus that “if you want to get rich, then you should do it because what’s a history degree worth?”

“I think it’s actually worth a lot more than people think,” he added.

According to GlassDoor.com, the average annual total compensation for an associate consultant at Bain is $89,681.

Comparable junior level positions at McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group and Deloitte bring in $91,162, $89,469 and $76,817, respectively.

A staff assistant in the U.S. Senate, for comparison, earns approximately $35,022 annually.

Wright-Swadel noted that as Duke has grown more socioeconomically diverse, the appeal of the large salaries that come with finance and consulting has grown.

“We have increasing numbers of students who come from family backgrounds where part of the reason they are here is to change the trajectory of their family legacy,” Wright-Swadel said. “So are they going to seek some of the top opportunities and the most competitive opportunities? Yes.” There are also reasons to enter the consulting field beyond the large paycheck, said junior Akshaya Trivedi.

Trivedi, who is currently applying for internship positions at major consulting firms, said he believes a liberal arts education is the perfect preparation for being a consultant.

“It’s one of the best intermediaries where you’re basically learning to think critically about certain kinds of issues, but at the same time you’re getting that more professional experience,” he said.

President Richard Brodhead said he has never known anyone who entered the consulting industry who didn’t say that it was “a fantastical analytical training.”

“I was never a consultant. I was never in finance, but I know a lot of people who learned a lot of things by being in them,” Brodhead said.

“As long as they remember how important it is to train oneself in the study of literature,” he laughingly added.

Trivedi noted he thinks it is perhaps unrealistic to expect a college senior to have a clearly-chosen career path, and so consulting offers a good way to explore different options while working with smart people and making connections.

“Basically, if you don’t know what you want to do with your life but you want to work with incredibly smart people and you want to get a lot of different kinds of exposure then consulting is for you,” he said.

The numbers Former Provost Peter Lange said Duke students’ desire to enter the finance and consulting industries has “been in the culture forever.”

In 2006, before the Great Recession, 18.5 percent of Duke graduates went into consulting and 21.4 percent went into the financial services industry. Those numbers dropped in 2010 and have stayed fairly constant since, according to data from the Senior Surveys conducted each year. In 2015, 7.7 percent of the class went into consulting and 13.6 percent went into finance.

Lange said the drive to enter these industries is “premised on a particular understanding of what an intellectually driven student is supposed to be.”

“I think it’s happening in society as a whole. Is there a way that Duke could fight that? Probably not,” he said.

Only finance, healthcare and technology hired more graduates in 2015 than consulting, and more than 20 percent of Duke seniors who were hired after graduation went into either finance or consulting.

Wright-Swadel noted that one reason so many students go into finance and consulting is that many get hired for fulltime positions with the companies they interned with as juniors.

“If we have 130 or so students who go to Wall Street and do internships in

the summer of their junior year and 90 percent of them are hired and get offers to full-time jobs, is it likely that that’s going to be one of the top fields that people go into? Yes,” he said.

He added that the role of tech companies recruiting on campus is increasing—noting that Oracle hired close to 25 people last year.

The five companies that hired the most Duke graduates from the Class of 2015 include Accenture, a consulting company, two tech companies— Oracle and Microsoft—one education organization—Teach for America—and Duke itself.

“It used to be that a very small number of companies took many of the students off every campus,” Wright-Swadel said. “Today, more companies hire one, maybe two, students rather than hire eight or 10.”

In contrast to Duke, 15.43 percent of Harvard seniors taking The Crimson’s senior survey reported that they had a consulting job lined up. Only 0.55 percent of the surveyed Harvard students said that they wanted to be in consulting 10 years after they graduated, however.

The story is similar at a wide range of top-ranked schools, according to numbers compiled by Business Insider.

On average, 9.7 percent of graduates from 14 elite schools examined by the news website take consulting jobs after leaving school.

The largest group of Duke students from the class 2015 who took consulting jobs were social science majors, according to the Senior Survey. Approximately 12 percent of social sciences majors graduating in 2015 took consulting jobs, compared to 3.8 percent of humanities majors and 6.3 percent of engineering majors.

‘People find their way’ Many entry-level consulting and finance positions are discussed by students as “a two year commitment.”

Crewson said that commitment isn’t official, but that there is “a typical pattern” his company sees for recent graduates entering as associate consultants.

He explained that after two years, most associate consultants are either promoted to senior associate consultant,

The Chronicle decide to go to graduate school or leave the industry. Many consultants who leave after two years do so to start their own company, he noted.

“We want people that are really smart and can serve our clients and if some people come in and say, ‘I want to be a consultant forever, and I want to make partner,’ then that is wonderful,” Crewson said.

But he said the company also recognizes that many “22-year-olds aren’t really ready to make a 10-year commitment.”

“We’ve kind of intentionally set up the model so that we’re not going to discount a student who is thinking about coming to Bain and says to themselves, ‘I’m going to work here for three years and then I really want to go to business school and start my own company,’” he said. “That person would not be discounted in our interview process because that is an equally fine outcome.”

Erin Beasley, a recruiter at Duke for McKinsey, wrote in an email that she was unable to comment because she was too busy during the recruiting season.

Christina Flood, a senior consultant on Deloitte’s Duke recruiting team, did not respond to a request for comment.

Brodhead said that over the course of his career, he has realized that many undergraduates don’t have a set idea of what they want their careers to be during their time on campus.

“Only some people send recruiters to campus and hire a lot of people, so of course more people go that way,” he said.

But he added that during the years after college “people find their way.”

“When I meet people who have been out 15 or 20 years, the people who are in consulting and the people who are in investment banking are people who find that riveting,” he said. “The people who don’t find that riveting aren’t in those businesses.”

Wright-Swadel said many students go into the positions knowing that realistically, they will be “a place to launch from, not necessarily an end destination.” *The student identified as Izzy Marie asked that her real last name not be used for fear of her story impacting future job prospects.

Wang noted that if not enough students take advantage of the early voting site, it could be removed altogether for the next election, and students would be forced to vote off-campus in the future.

Beyond this specific issue, student groups want Duke to do more in general with promoting voter turnout.

“I don’t necessarily know what that would require specifically,” Lemon said.

“But more needs to be done because the level of voter engagement is not yet acceptable. Efforts are being made, it’s headed in the right direction, but much more has to be done.”

Lemon suggested the possibility of a booklet for students outlining voting procedures and candidates as part of policy the University might consider implementing. Wang suggested improving education on North Carolina’s new voting laws. Overall, she acknowledged that, “for the most part, the best we can do is to ask them to make sure our voting sites are in better places.”

But Feaver said that this election is fundamentally different, and voting fundamentally more important as a result.

“It’s a cliché that every election is the most important election of your lifetime,” Feaver said. “Every candidate says that. It’s a cliché, but the cliché might be true this time around.”

And to those who aren’t sure their voice matters, Moneta has a message.

“I get it. Have a moment, get over it and get your ass out there and make a difference,” he said.

Moneta argued that, “every important social justice movement in America is born or enabled by college campuses,” and emphasized that students have the opportunity to play their part.

Early voting will begin Oct. 27 in Devil’s Den on Central Campus and will last until Nov. 5.

Students will be able to register on the same day that they vote.
