WELCOME TO DUKE DUKE UNIVERSITY is more than a prestigious college institution—it’s a place to grow, to explore and to experience. Blue Devils work hard and play hard, and they’re all the better for it. The University we know today was once a one-room log schoolhouse in nearby Randolph County. Eventually, it became a permanent academy for Methodist and Quaker children and in 1859 it turned into Trinity College. Despite surviving the Civil War, the school struggled during the Reconstruction Era before adhering to the “New South” image of urbanization and manufacturing. It was then that Trinity College moved to the booming city of Durham in 1892. Its new campus at the time is Duke’s current East Campus, where all the first-year students live. Entrepreneur Washington Duke’s $85,000 church and civic-minded contribution to enhancing the school was followed by support from his eldest son, Benjamin N. Duke, and Ben’s younger brother, James B. Duke, who created the family philanthropic organization, The Duke Endowment, in 1924 and enabled the school’s transition to a university. These contributions also gave Trinity College its new name—Duke University. James B. Duke’s vision was to transform a regional liberal arts college into one of the world’s top institutions of higher education. And here we are. So, breathe it all in—the history, the culture, and all of Durham’s magic. Enjoy your time at Duke! Welcome.DukeChronicle.com

FUN FACTS Duke student basketball fans are known as the Cameron Crazies, and for good reason. In order to attend the home game against University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, some Duke students brace the cold and camp out in K-ville for almost 2 months. Mike Krzyzewski, otherwise known as Coach K, has the most NCAA Division I wins in men’s basketball history.

The Duke Lemur Center is the world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates. Jovian, the celebrity lemur for the hit children’s show Zoboomafoo lived at the Lemur Center before passing away in 2014.

A Closer Look at Tenting TENTING IN K-VILLE for the UNC game is not taken lightly. The process includes a basketball trivia test, races, tent checks, and lots of rules and regulations. Only the most committed fans survive. Black tenting Students take their campout spot and begin tenting during the first week of classes (4-6 weeks before the big game). Blue tenting Students start their tenting experience usually about 4 weeks prior to the game. White tenting If successful in the “race to the secret spot, White tenting allows students to begin sleeping out about two weeks before the game. Flex Tenting The newest addition to the tenting line up, Flex Tenting replaced the walk-up line this past season. Flex tenting begins about a week before the game. Admission to the game is not guaranteed for flex tenters. Despite its craziness, most students find tenting an integral part of their Duke experience. The Duke Forest is comprised of a variety of ecosystems and over 7,000 acres of land, much of which was purchased by the university in the 1920’s in order to help transform Trinity College into Duke University. The forest helps foster learning, community outreach activities, and most prominently research, as the forest is home to over 60 research projects per year. The forest’s diverse wildlife also creates the perfect environment for recreational activities such as hiking, biking and horseback riding.

Named one of the top 10 public gardens in the United States and winner of the 2013 Horticulture Magazine Award for Garden Excellence, Duke Gardens features five miles of scenic pathways, and 55 acres of beautiful plants, flowers and ponds. The Gardens offers tours, classes, volunteer opportunities and an elegant rental hall for special events. It is also home to Duke Performances’ Music in the Gardens, a summer outdoor concert series. CAMPUS BREAKDOWN Duke consists of two campuses, connected by Campus Drive. Each campus offers a different social experience and most Duke students will live on each one throughout their academic career. West Campus West Campus, home of the famous Chapel, features many other Duke favorites including Cameron Indoor and Wallace Wade Stadium. The campus was created in 1924 when Trinity College underwent an expansion as a result of the Duke Endowment. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors live on West Campus in one of its eight quadrangles, which also host 30 independent houses, 16 Selective Living Groups, 21 Greek organizations, and three livinglearning communities. The Richard H. Brodhead Center for Campus Life offers an array of dining venues and study rooms. Additionally, the new Duke Student Wellness Center is the home of Counseling & Psychological Services, Student Health, a tranquil garden, the “Oasis” which has a massage chair, meditation pillows and more. Baldwin Auditorium on East Campus

East Campus All first-year students are required to live in one of 13 residence halls on East Campus, which are distributed across four “neighborhoods.” East Campus was originally the site of Trinity College and the Women’s College from 1930-1972, but it became first-year exclusive in 1995. The main features on East Campus include Lilly Library, The Ark dance studio, and Marketplace—the first-year dining hall.

DURHAM AFTER DARK Best of Duke Winner Shooters Salon II: It’s no surprise that Duke students voted Shooters the best bar for undergraduates and the bar with the friendliest staff. Shooters is especially popping on Wednesday and Saturday nights, and the bar features a bull, cage and newly constructed balcony. But it’s Kim Cates who makes everyone particularly drawn to Shooters. The owner’s love for Duke students is quite clear, as shown by the accessibility of her cell phone and Facebook page, alongside her loyalty to Duke sports. On any other night of the week (especially Thursdays), check out Devine’s Grill & Sports Bar, a more laid-back, but just as social version

of Shooters. You can find yourself chatting it up on the outdoor terrace or jamming out to karaoke inside. Fullsteam Brewery: With its North Carolina hipster feel, this family and dog-friendly brewery and tavern serves its customers through its one mission: to pioneer the art of Distinctly Southern Beer. Inspired by the food and farm traditions of the South, Fullsteam incorporates local farmed goods and seasonal botanicals into their brewing and experimentation processes. There are often a few food trucks hanging out front, and the best part is that you can bring food inside. If you’re in the mood for something else, enjoy live entertainment at Motorco

got jazz?

Music Hall, which consists of a large state-of-the-art “Showroom,” a “GarageBar,” a smaller “party” space and a large outdoor patio. Better yet, it’s right across the street from Fullsteam Brewery. And if you’re after a more chill, laid-back vibe, stop by Surf Club for cheap drinks, shuffleboard, darts, bocce ball, and great outdoor seating. You can also check out The Tavern Food & Spirits, home of the longest bar in Durham. This spot features 24 taps, 10 TVs, darts, pool, a patio, and live musical entertainment. Have your heart set on something a little more upscale? Head on over to The Roof at The Durham

Hotel, the perfect gathering spot for both guests and locals. The Roof features an indoor bar, both covered and open-air lounge seating, and a penthouse with its own patio for private parties. Enjoy panoramic views of the city while choosing from selections such as original handcrafted cocktails, wine and beer options, a seasonal raw bar and a small kitchen menu. Thursday nights the bar boasts live jazz. For another rooftop bar that’s a little more laid-back, cross the street to the the Unscripted Durham Hotel ‘s The Patio. With its resort-style décor and pool, it’s sure to make you feel like you’re on vacation.

Wanna PLAY jazz? Wanna LEARN about jazz? The Duke Jazz Program wants YOU! Get into the groove! with these courses:

24 HOURS OF EATING IN DURHAM By Jack Rubenstein dukechronicle.com | 02/21/2019

My dad and brother flew in this weekend for the N.C. State game, and with them here for only 24 hours, we tried to visit as many Durham restaurants as our stomachs could handle. Friday, 11 p.m., Mateo Bar de Tapas: After listening to a bit of the lifeless Icona Pop performance, I headed over to a late-night meal downtown at Mateo. My dad and brother went straight from the airport to the restaurant. That’s how much my family loves this place. The restaurant is a dim-lit, traditional tapas place, with a board of 20 specials that makes each trip unique and interesting. Highlights included the roasted duck breast and chicken croquettes specials, gambas and brussels sprouts. I would avoid the octopus and meatballs dishes, which are both good but fall short of the rest of the menu. In past visits, the fried rice and salt cod were also great. I wouldn’t recommend going on a college budget, but it is a great place to meet family or go for a special occasion. Saturday, 10 a.m., Grub Durham: My original idea was to go to Monuts, the famed donut and breakfast spot off of East Campus. A line out the door complicated that plan. We ended up at Grub, a place I have been to a couple times. The biscuits are the highlight of every visit, perfectly crispy on the outside and paired well with butter and raspberry preserves. The chocolate chip pancakes are just okay. The batter needed to be mixed better as a few clumps were confusingly salty. The fried chicken and ham and egg biscuit sandwiches, which I had the last couple times, are the way to go. Grub is a solid breakfast spot in a convenient location. They are also open for lunch and dinner and serve a good hamburger at both. Saturday, 11:30 a.m., Durham Farmers’ Market: The Durham Farmers’ Market packs a lot into its hundred or so yards of space in Durham Central Park. They have meats, fresh fish, cheese, wine, beer, pastries, produce and more, all from local farms and vendors. The market is

only open 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays during the winter. Loyal customers still turned out even though it was 40 degrees and raining. I picked up a great baguette from Loaf and a wheel of speciality Carolina Moon cheese from Chapel Hill Creamcontinued on page 41

Blue Devils earn 21st ACC tournament title By Michael Model Sports Editor

CHARLOTTE—One week ago Saturday, the Blue Devils walked off the court in Chapel Hill ready to hit the reset button prior to starting postseason play. Three wins, 81 points and 30 rebounds by Zion Williamson later, it’s safe to say Duke is back at its best. The third-seeded Blue Devils clinched their 21st ACC tournament title Thursday after knocking off No. 4 seed Florida State 73-63 Saturday evening. Duke used a 2511 run in the opening minutes of the second-half to break open a game that was tied at halftime. Williamson capped his stellar tournament for the Blue Devils with a 21-point, fiverebound performance as Duke collected its first piece of hardware of the 2018-19 campaign. Williamson’s scoring total for the week was a program record for a three-game run in the ACC tournament and earned him MVP honors. Williamson and R.J. Barrett earned a spot on the all-tournament first team and Tre Jones was named to the second team. “It’s an honor for to us win,” head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “This is the best conference, especially this year, and I’m proud of my guys. They beat three outstanding opponents, and tonight was a physical, really hard-fought defensive game and our guys played good defense again. So I’m proud of them.” The Blue Devils (29-5) struggled to find consistency out of the gates, missing each of their first eight attempts from the perimeter as Florida State jumped out to a 27-19 advantage. Duke then started to push the tempo and took advantage of eight first-half turnovers from the Seminoles (27-7) to tie the game at 27 and entered halftime tied at 36.

Terrance Mann hit a triple out of the locker room to give the Seminoles a three-point lead, but the Blue Devils came right back with a classic Duke second-half run. Jones hit a jumper, Williamson hit a pair of layups, Javin DeLaurier hit two at the line and a reverse layup by Jones in transition capped a 10-0 spurt. The Blue Devils took a 46-39 advantage with 16:29 remaining— then their largest of the night. Less than three minutes later, Duke went on another 8-0 spurt to open up a 58-44 advantage, forcing a Florida State timeout with 11:11 remaining. The Blue Devils opened the half with 10 consecutive made 2-pointers and coupled that with stifling defense that held Florida State to just three of its first 15 from the field out of the break. “We came here and we talked to each other, like `we came too far just to lose,’ Williamson said on the message at halftime. “You know it’s a long bus ride. We don’t want to be on no quiet bus ride we want to be lit and enjoy ourselves and also we were playing physical, both teams, so you know we just had to have execution with it and that’s what we did.” The Seminoles fought back and cut the Duke lead to as little as five, using a 12-3 run to trim the deficit to 61-56 with 5:28 remaining—behind a team-high 14 points from ACC Sixth Man of the Year Mfiondu Kabengele—but Florida State could not slow down the Blue Devils enough down the stretch. A bucket by Jones and a 3-pointer by Cam Reddish from the left wing with 1:20 left put the game away. Jones continued his recent attacking mentality on offense, but was more efficient than in past games. The floor general added a season-high 18 points, on 8-of-14 shooting, while racking up six assists in the process.

Grad students face challenges for mental health Graduate students at elite schools face challenges related to mental health. Graduate students at elite universities are “disproportionately likely” to experience mental health issues, according to The Atlantic, referencing a study by Harvard-affiliated researchers. The study found that 18 percent of approximately 500 doctoral candidates surveyed at eight institutions—including Columbia, Harvard, Princeton and Yale, but not Duke—suffered from anxiety and depression, which is more than three times the national average. “Graduate study can become stressful for a variety of reasons—the long process of writing a Ph.D. dissertation, the compact timetable of a master’s program, or the challenges of adjusting to a new culture as an international student, just to name a few,” wrote John Zhu, senior public affairs officer and communications strategist for Duke’s Graduate School. The results of the study also indicated that approximately one in 10 students reported “suicidal

24 HOURS OF EATING IN DURHAM from page 35 ery before I left to escape the cold. Saturday, 1 p. m., Pizzeria Toro: A Duke student favorite, Pizzeria Toro serves maybe the best pizza in Durham. We had the mushroom white pizza and the classic Margherita. Both were great thanks to delicious fresh mozzarella cheese and a thin, crispy crust. The suppli (fried rice balls) were a solid starter as well. The clean space and open kitchen, with a massive wood burning stove in the center, make it an easy place to come back to. Their no reservations policy means the wait can be daunting, though we had no problem getting a table on this rainy Saturday. Saturday, 5 p.m., M Kokko: The line for M Kokko was about 30 people long by the time they opened at 5 p.m. Luckily

we got there at 4:45 and were second in line. This restaurant also has a no reservations policy, and it’s an even smaller space than Pizzeria Toro, so the wait times can be outrageous. The food is worth nearly any amount of wait time, though. The soy garlic glazed korean fried chicken wings served with pickled daikon cubes might be the best dish in all of Durham. The chicken sandwich and pork buns are not far behind. This is a great place for someone on a college budget (I believe the dishes range from $9 to $15), and I hope more Duke students visit in the future.

Italian restaurant on the outskirts of town is a bit of a trek. As a reward for your effort, the food is relatively affordable. The pastas range from $9 to $14, and the steak, while relatively small, is also $14. However, other entrees and the wine list may put this out of range for many Duke students. Still, it’s worth making a date spot or go-to place for a special occasion. For me, the burrata special, fried eggplant appetizer, and steak were all worth coming back for. I would also probably order the pasta carbonara and meatball appetizer again.

Saturday, 6 p.m., Duke vs. N.C. State: Zion put up 32 points. RJ had a triple double. Good stuff.

And after my family left early Sunday morning, and our crazy 24 hours of food was over. Now, it’s back to Marketplace I guess.

Saturday 9:45 p.m., Gocciolina: This small
