The University we know today was once a one-room log schoolhouse in nearby Randolph County. Eventually, it became a permanent academy for Methodist and Quaker children and in 1859 it turned into Trinity College. Despite surviving the Civil War, the school struggled during the Reconstruction Era before adhering to the “New South” image of urbanization and manufacturing. It was then that Trinity College moved to the booming city of Durham in 1892. Its new campus at the time is Duke’s current East Campus, where all the first-year students live. Entrepreneur Washington Duke’s $85,000 church and civic-minded contribution to enhancing the school was followed by support from his eldest son, Benjamin N. Duke, and Ben’s younger brother, James B. Duke, who created the family philanthropic organization, The Duke Endowment, in 1924 and enabled the school’s transition to a university. These contributions also gave Trinity College its new name—Duke University. James B. Duke’s vision was to transform a regional liberal arts college into one of the world’s top institutions of higher education. And here we are. So, breathe it all in—the history, the culture, and all of Durham’s magic. Enjoy your time at Duke!

FUN FACTS Duke student basketball fans are known as the Cameron Crazies, and for good reason. In order to attend the home game against University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, some Duke students brace the cold and camp out in K-ville for almost 2 months. Mike Krzyzewski, otherwise known as Coach K, has the most NCAA Division I wins in men’s basketball history.

The Duke Lemur Center is the world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates. Jovian, the celebrity lemur for the hit children’s show Zoboomafoo lived at the Lemur Center before passing away in 2014.

The Duke Chapel is 210 feet tall. Weddings at the Chapel can be booked only one year in advance of the wedding month. Some couples seeking a specific date have recreated Duke’s tenting tradition by camping outside the Chapel the night before sign-ups begin in order to be the first to book.

A Closer Look at Tenting TENTING IN K-VILLE for the UNC game is not taken lightly. The process includes a basketball trivia test, races, tent checks, and lots of rules and regulations. Only the most committed fans survive.

Black tenting Students take their campout spot and begin tenting during the first week of classes (4-6 weeks before the big game).

Blue tenting Students start their tenting experience usually about 4 weeks prior to the game.

White tenting If successful in the “race to the secret spot,” White tenting allows students to begin sleeping out about two weeks before the game.

DURHAM AFTER DARK Sports Bar, a more laid-back, but just as social version of Shooters. You can find yourself chatting it up on the outdoor terrace or jamming out to karaoke inside. Shooters II Saloon

Best of Duke Winner Shooters Saloon II: It’s no surprise that Duke students always vote Shooters the best bar for undergrads and the bar with the friendliest staff. Shooters is especially popping on Wednesday and Saturday nights, and the bar features a bull, cage and newly constructed balcony. But it’s Kim Cates who makes everyone particularly drawn to Shooters. The owner’s love for Duke students is quite clear, as shown by the accessibility of her cell phone and Facebook page, alongside her loyalty to Duke sports. On any other night of the week (especially Thursdays), check out Devine’s Grill &

Fullsteam Brewery: With its North Carolina hipster feel, this family and dog-friendly brewery and tavern serves its customers through its one mission: to pioneer the art of Distinctly Southern Beer. Inspired by the food and farm traditions of the South, Fullsteam incorporates local farmed goods and seasonal botanicals into their brewing and experimentation processes. There are often a few food trucks hanging out front, and the best part is that you can bring food inside. If you’re in the mood for something else, enjoy live entertainment at Motorco Music Hall, which consists of a large state-of-the-art “Showroom,” a “GarageBar,”

a smaller “party” space and a large outdoor patio. Better yet, it’s right across the street from Fullsteam Brewery. And if you’re after a more chill, laid-back vibe, stop by Surf Club for cheap drinks, shuffleboard, darts, bocce ball, and great outdoor seating. You can also check out The Tavern Food & Spirits, home of the longest bar in Durham. This spot features 24 taps, 10 TVs, darts, pool, a patio, and live musical entertainment. Have your heart set on something a little more

upscale? Head on over to The Roof at The Durham Hotel, the perfect gathering spot for both guests and locals. The Roof features an indoor bar, both covered and open-air lounge seating, and a penthouse with its own patio for private parties. Enjoy panoramic views of the city while choosing from selections such as original handcrafted cocktails, wine and beer options, a seasonal raw bar and a small kitchen menu. Thursday nights the bar boasts live jazz. For another rooftop bar that’s a little more laid-back, cross the street to the the Unscripted Durham Hotel ‘s The Patio. With its resort-style décor and pool, it’s sure to make you feel like you’re on vacation. Looking for a sophisticated cocktail or high end whiskey? You’ll want to be sure to check out Alley Twenty Six and their menu of charcuterie and New America fare.

GRADUATE STUDENT LIFE Living Most graduate students rent off-campus housing from private landlords in Durham, as there is limited on-campus housing available. The Chronicle offers a searchable online housing guide at nearduke.com. This is a great way to connect those looking for housing options, and is searchable by distance from campus, price, square footage and more. The Graduate and Professional Student Council of Duke University (GPSC), is the umbrella student government organization for Duke’s nine graduate and professional schools. Its purpose is to represent and advocate on behalf of graduate and professional students, serve as a liaison between graduate and professional students and the administration, program events and financially support graduate and professional student groups.

Graduate Students Play Hard Too Campout, the annual event sponsored and run by the Duke University Basketball Committee, produces the largest yearly gathering of Duke graduate and professional students. Students camp out in designated areas of the Blue Zone parking lot in order to earn the ability to get season basketball tickets. At Campout, students eat food from local food trucks, meet new people and engage in activities such as trivia games and a scavenger hunt.

FUN 102 Duke basketball players have been selected in FACT the NBA draft and 10 players have been named the National Player of the Year.

Graduate and professional students camp out for tickets.

The University’s library system is one of the top 10 private institution systems in the country—within which students can find any needed book, information or movie, as well as ample study space. Visit library.duke.edu for more information.

CAMPUS BREAKDOWN Duke consists of two campuses, connected by Campus Drive. Each campus offers a different social experience and most Duke students will live on each one throughout their academic career. West Campus West Campus, home of the famous Chapel, features many other Duke favorites including Cameron Indoor and Wallace Wade Stadium. The campus was created in 1924 when Trinity College underwent an expansion as a result of the Duke Endowment. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors live on West Campus in one of its eight quadrangles, which also host 30 independent houses, 16 Selective Living Groups, 21 Greek organizations, and three livinglearning communities. The Richard H. Brodhead Center for Campus Life offers an array of dining venues and study rooms. Additionally, the new Duke Student Wellness Center is the home of Counseling & Psychological Services, Student Health, a tranquil garden, the “Oasis” which has a massage chair, meditation pillows and more. Baldwin Auditorium on East Campus

East Campus All first-year students are required to live in one of 13 residence halls on East Campus, which are distributed across four “neighborhoods.” East Campus was originally the site of Trinity College and the Women’s College from 1930-1972, but it became first-year exclusive in 1995. The main features on East Campus include Lilly Library, The Ark dance studio, and Marketplace—the first-year dining hall. Library Perkins

ARTS + ENTERTAINMENT From Duke’s founding, the arts have been an expression of university life, bringing together members of the community for concerts, exhibitions and productions while giving intellectual and emotional textures to daily experiences. Duke enriches the student and faculty experience in the arts, wishing to create an environment where the arts are clearly valued and widely supported. The recent opening of the beautiful Rubenstein Arts Center (the Ruby) on Campus Drive demonstrates Duke’s dedication to the arts. Find your music community on campus through the student-run record lable (Small Town Records) or radio station (WXDU).

Dance

Music

Play—Explore new realms of musical creativity and refine performance skills in courses, one-on-one instrumental lessons, master classes and ensembles. Use your playing to further social change beyond campus through Duke’s partnerships with El Sistema USA and the Duke University String School. Listen—Absorb the melodies of the Jazz Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Duke Opera Workshop, Duke Chorale and Duke’s many a cappella groups. Students can purchase tickets to any Duke Performances concert for just $10. The university’s professional performing arts presenting organization invites acclaimed interntational and national artists into venues including the beautiful Baldwin Auditorium on East Campus. 22 the chronicle

Perform—The Dance Programs offers multi-level African, ballet, modern and jazz technique and repertoire classes, as well as a dance major and minor, and a new MFA (launched in 2019). A variety of solo and group performing opportunities are also offered, which include working with faculty and student choreographers and invited guest artists and musicians. Duke also has 19 student dance groups, ranging from hip-hop to classical Indian dance. Watch—See live dance from the American Ballet Theatre, in residence at Duke through 2020, or see your friend’s perform on one of Duke’s many stages—and everything in between! Performances are held both on-campus in spaces such as Reynolds Theatre, and in off-campus locations such as the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Theater Perform—The Department of Theater Studies offers students multiple opportunities to both study and practice theater, with courses in dramatic literature and theater arts. The department faculty includes theater professionals in acting, administration, design, directing and playwriting.

Arts Career Development Connect with alumni in creative careers through Duke’s Entertainment, Media, and Arts (DEMAN) Network through the annual DEMAN Weekend in November or year-round gatherings. Apply to StudioDuke with a creative project for the chance to develop it with a professional mentor. Work as a member of the Creative Arts Student Team (CASTs) or take “Introduction to Performing Arts Management” to gain insight into careers in arts management. Watch—Courses are accompanied by productions from all over the world, and the department invites numerous award-winning theater artists to campus each year. For two years running, Hoof ‘n’ Horn, Duke’s musical theater student group, has presented sold-out shows in the Ruby’s von der Heyden Studio Theater.

Visual & Media Arts

Make—Art, Art History &

Visual Studies classes range from the fine arts, to the psychology of perception, to the context of art in popular culture and social media. The Arts of the Moving Image (AMI) certificate program introduces students to the production and critical analysis of film and photography. Blue Devils earn 21st ACC tournament title By Michael Model Sports Editor

CHARLOTTE—One week ago Saturday, the Blue Devils walked off the court in Chapel Hill ready to hit the reset button prior to starting postseason play. Three wins, 81 points and 30 rebounds by Zion Williamson later, it’s safe to say Duke is back at its best. The third-seeded Blue Devils clinched their 21st ACC tournament title Thursday after knocking off No. 4 seed Florida State 73-63 Saturday evening. Duke used a 2511 run in the opening minutes of the second-half to break open a game that was tied at halftime. Williamson capped his stellar tournament for the Blue Devils with a 21-point, fiverebound performance as Duke collected its first piece of hardware of the 2018-19 campaign. Williamson’s scoring total for the week was a program record for a three-game run in the ACC tournament and earned him MVP honors. Williamson and R.J. Barrett earned a spot on the all-tournament first team and Tre Jones was named to the second team. “It’s an honor for to us win,” head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “This is the best conference, especially this year, and I’m proud of my guys. They beat three outstanding opponents, and tonight was a physical, really hard-fought defensive game and our guys played good defense again. So I’m proud of them.” The Blue Devils (29-5) struggled to find consistency out of the gates, missing each of their first eight attempts from the perimeter as Florida State jumped out to a 27-19 advantage. Duke then started to push the tempo and took advantage of eight first-half turnovers from the Seminoles (27-7) to tie the game at 27 and entered halftime tied at 36.

Terrance Mann hit a triple out of the locker room to give the Seminoles a three-point lead, but the Blue Devils came right back with a classic Duke second-half run. Jones hit a jumper, Williamson hit a pair of layups, Javin DeLaurier hit two at the line and a reverse layup by Jones in transition capped a 10-0 spurt. The Blue Devils took a 46-39 advantage with 16:29 remaining— then their largest of the night. Less than three minutes later, Duke went on another 8-0 spurt to open up a 58-44 advantage, forcing a Florida State timeout with 11:11 remaining. The Blue Devils opened the half with 10 consecutive made 2-pointers and coupled that with stifling defense that held Florida State to just three of its first 15 from the field out of the break. “We came here and we talked to each other, like `we came too far just to lose,’ Williamson said on the message at halftime. “You know it’s a long bus ride. We don’t want to be on no quiet bus ride we want to be lit and enjoy ourselves and also we were playing physical, both teams, so you know we just had to have execution with it and that’s what we did.” The Seminoles fought back and cut the Duke lead to as little as five, using a 12-3 run to trim the deficit to 61-56 with 5:28 remaining—behind a team-high 14 points from ACC Sixth Man of the Year Mfiondu Kabengele—but Florida State could not slow down the Blue Devils enough down the stretch. A bucket by Jones and a 3-pointer by Cam Reddish from the left wing with 1:20 left put the game away. Jones continued his recent attacking mentality on offense, but was more efficient than in past games. The floor general added a season-high 18 points, on 8-of-14 shooting, while racking up six assists in the process.

Grad students face challenges for mental health Graduate students at elite schools face challenges related to mental health. Graduate students at elite universities are “disproportionately likely” to experience mental health issues, according to The Atlantic, referencing a study by Harvard-affiliated researchers. The study found that 18 percent of approximately 500 doctoral candidates surveyed at eight institutions—including Columbia, Harvard, Princeton and Yale, but not Duke—suffered from anxiety and depression, which is more than three times the national average. “Graduate study can become stressful for a variety of reasons—the long process of writing a Ph.D. dissertation, the compact timetable of a master’s program, or the challenges of adjusting to a new culture as an international student, just to name a few,” wrote John Zhu, senior public affairs officer and communications strategist for Duke’s Graduate School. The results of the study also indicated that approximately one in 10 students reported “suicidal
