Supplementary English and Mathematics

Royal Courts of Justice

The children visit the Royal Courts of Justice, home to the highest courts in the land. The workshops immerse students in the legal system giving them the chance to take on roles such as: a judge, barrister, defendant, witness or juror They use real court cases and archive materials to explore topical themes and issues.

Magistates

Over the years, the children have had talks from local magistrates. Often these are parents. The children learn that many of the legal decisions made in England and Wales are not always made by judges They are made by ordinary people who work in all sorts of fields and have no previous connection to the law profession. What they do have is a sense of fairness. They also have the ability to listen, make rational judgements and be proud representatives of their communities These people are magistrates.

Debating

Form 6 has had a healthy tradition of debating with other schools. Sadly lockdown put a stop to it but the school is eager to get going again Apart from improved articulation and the ability to think quickly, debating teaches the boys and girls critical thinking skills that are essential in daily life. Critical thinking is the ability to make well thought out and reasoned arguments while also questioning the evidence behind a particular conclusion or stance They learn to disagree agreeably!

Young

CitizensMake a Difference Challenge

For the first time, Orchard House School will be taking part in ‘The Make a Difference Challenge’ led by Young Citizens. Young Citizens describes itself as being ‘ a child-led social action programme that empowers some of our youngest citizens’ The children of Form 6 will choose a social action project as part of the ‘Make a Difference Challenge’. Children have the opportunity to put on a full-scale production in a professional theatre. This year ’ s production will be the Roald Dahl classic, 'Matilda' and will feature all children performing through music, dance and drama The production culminates in a week-long experience at the Polish Centre’s theatre with professional audio and lighting. Casting occurs shortly after the February half term holiday and time allocated to the production gradually increases towards the performance.

In addition to performance skills, the opportunity helps children to develop invaluable life skills such as: confidence in public speaking; working as part of a team; and working to tight deadlines. Children have the opportunity to perform the full-length production twice: once to the rest of the school and once to an invited audience of parents and family members.
