TIPS

ho says back to school is a drab? Of course, your summer was a blast, but it shouldn't have to end when school is back in session! You can create a fun environment even while you are in school. Preparedness is the keys to your success. How ready are you?

Did you take the tour? You should always consider taking a tour of the school even if you attended last year and the year before. You are in a new grade and some of the wings in the school may not be familiar to you. If this is your first year at the school, it is a great idea to set up a time and date to tour the school to help you navigate the halls so that you are not late to class.

Have you met the new teachers? Meeting the new teacher is excited, but also a bit of anxiety sets in because you are con-

cerned about how much work the teacher will assign. You even may feel a bit overwhelmed because it's a new school year and you not sure if you will like your new teacher. Keep an open mind with each teacher as they have their own method of teaching their classrooms.

has done the route. If you are driving, then you may want to be sure to account for traffic since school is back in session. Leave the house a little bit earlier than you are used to for the first several weeks of school starting. Carpooling is an excellent resource because it will minimize the build-up of traffic and it gives you the opportunity to catch up with your friends before school.

Have you gotten your school Friendships supplies? Every class has a list of supplies needed to engineer your classroom success. Don't worry if on the first day back you realize you didn't get enough paper after all the first day is more about sending home homework for your parents and getting your agenda for the quarter. Be sure to find the best deals when shopping for your supplies.

Know your bus/driving routes If you catch a bus, did you check to make sure where it will stop, and the times you must be on the corner? It is best practice to arrive at your bus stop at least fifteen minutes before the scheduled times in case the driver

You are about to reconnect with some of your besties that you may or may not have seen over the summer. What a fantastic time for you and your friends as you play catch up and reminisce on your vacations. Save some room for newcomers because it is bound to happen in every school. Friendship is a remarkable privilege that we should hold dear to our hearts. Be mindful that friendships are a great reward, but your studies are what will set a path for your future. Making time for your friends is necessary, but don't let it get in the way of your daily studies. Make school a fun-filled place to learn and enjoy. School is in session, so make the most of your school year. g

Naya Perez is an honor roll student with big dreams and aspirations to pursue. She lives in Maryland and is proud of her Latino heritage. Naya sits down to read every question that her readers submit and makes an honest effort to answer them accordingly. Please send your questions to info@dulcequince.com for our next issue.

ASK

Naya experienced the depths of sex. With sex can come diseases and pregnancy and you want to embrace your goals and not let anything rob you of that.

Dear Naya, I have goals and plans, but I am afraid they will be impossible to accoplish? How do I achieve this without getting discouraged? Amber, MD Dear Amber, This is fantastic and exciting. Stay in the moment and bask in your desire to want more out of life. Record your plan on how you will accomplish this. Keep a journal to refer back to when you find yourself discouraged. Many teens your age don't even have an idea of what homework assignment is due the next day. You hold a great deal of power by aspiring to greatness.

MONDAY ISA / QUINCE VIDEO

Dear Naya, I can't seem to pick the music for my Quincea単era because there is not enough time in the day to play all my favorites at my quince. What should I do? - Linda, FL

Dear Naya, All my friends are already having sex; but I haven't done anything yet because I'm scared that I might not be ready yet. I feel like an outsider because I'm the only one in my group that doesn't have any stories to share. - Michelle, MD

Dear Michelle, There is nothing wrong with you, and you must not let this get you down. You should talk to your parents about sex and no one else. Your friends will not give you the best or right advice even if they seem sincere. They are kids too and have not

Dear Linda, Talk with your DJ so that they can help you narrow down your music, plus they may be able to do several mixes that include more than one song. Your professionals have been doing this for some time now and have the expertise to guide you through your planning.

Dear Naya, I am all about the bling and want a lot of it for my Quincea単era. I want to walk in, and everything is BLINGED out! Other than faux diamond rhinestones can you tell me what else would bring the bling to my fling? - Sonya, NJ

Dear Sonya, I love bling too, and I would suggest a few things along with the assistance of your planner/decor person who is coordinating your party. Today, bling is the new thing with jeweled candelabras, sequin tablecloths, lots of twinkle lights, and lots of candles or led candles if your venue does not allow open fire. Your planner or decor vendor is the best one to give you advice. Dear Naya, I was just asked to be a Chambelan for my best boy's sisters Quincea単era. I don't know what a Quincea単era or Chambelan is, can you help? - Mike, MD Dear Mike, Welcome to the family and the Latino community. What an honor to be asked to take on this role. A chambelan is part of her court of honor which is much like the groomsmen in a wedding. You will need to be committed. You will do a fitting for your attire and possibly go to a dance studio to learn the entrance dance called the Waltz. It is a lot of fun because you might do a fun kick butt video.

Silvia Genovez is the owner of Kaze Cakes, mother, and entrepreneur. She started her business in a small townhouse in Gaithersburg MD.

F I T N E S S & H E A L T H / STRESS

STRESS W

hat is stress and how does it affect you? Stress is a silent killer that does not discriminate. Don't let stress defeat you! Stress can be a physical, mental, and emotional response that your body is subjected to when left unchecked. Although stress is a normal part of life, you should still manage the amount of stress you are capable of handling.

When you are stressed, do you emotionally eat junk food, or eat when you are not even hungry because stress disorients your feelings. If you are going to eat something while battling stress, find something healthy, but if you are not hungry grab a glass of water to fill that anxiety. You may only be adding more pressure on your plate if you begin gaining unnecessary weight. Are you sleeping well? Stress can have your mind working full-force, and cause you to experience insomnia. When you are having troubles sleeping try to implement a cool down exercise that you can do before bed. Your body needs rest to combat the stress effectively.

Health risks of stress can lead to digestive issues, ulcers, and high blood pressure. Are you experiencing internal issues that have you feeling ill? Express your concerns with your parents or a healthcare professional, because this is how stress kills silently. Stress if not addressed can lead to depression, which makes you question everything. You are surrendering to an uncontrollable abyss when you don't speak up or speak out about the stress you are faced with. Yes, you may feel ashamed for speaking out about it, but talking about it can also help others, while helping yourself. Remember that you should have a good support system in place, create a good exercise plan, get plenty of rest, manage your time effectively, and eat a well-balanced diet. These healthy traits are paramount to reducing stress in your life. It's never too late to ask for help. There are many resources outside of your support base to help you with your stress, so seek them out before it's too late. g

Hiking

Exercise

Yoga is a practice of the mind, body, and spirit. Through yoga, one can accomplish breathing techniques, and posture that helps with the natural flow of your trinity.

Hiking is to be one with nature. Get out and see life with a walk in the woods, climb rocks or find a trail that makes you want to camp out for the day.

Exercise fights stress, depression and weight gain. Get as much exercise as you can each day so that your body expels harmful toxins that cause your body and mind to shut down.

Meditation

Massage Therapy

Comminication & Support

Meditation is an in-depth focus of the mind. You can accomplish mediation by controlling the flow of your thoughts and feelings in silence or by humming. Be in sync with oneself.

Massage Therapy is not a therapy just because your body feels tight. Those tight areas on your body is a sign of stress pockets, and they cause pain, slouching, and anxiety.

Support/Communication is the best way to help with the reduction of stress. It gives you the sense of not feeling alone and the platform to share your cocerns without judgment.

Sleep

Diet

Time Management

Sleep is PARAMOUNT! Your body runs all day, and at night it needs to get rest. Just like a car can only run on so many gallons of gas, so does your body run on energy. Get plenty of sleep.

Diet is eating foods that make you feel good without overeating. Eating green leafy veggies with great proteins and drinking plenty of water will fight negative feelings.

Time management is a tool to help you organize your life. Never take on more than you can handle. When we add more to our plate, we end up failing in an area that is equally important. Fall/Winter 2018 / Dulce Quince Magazine

F I T N E S S & H E A L T H / FITNESS TRACKERS

Is A Fitness Tracker Really Worth The

MONEY? Looking to add a fitness tracker to your Christmas list? Read on for what you should know.

I

f you are really into fitness or are looking to get into shape, will a fitness tracker really give you an edge and help encourage healthy habits? Maybe! Read on to find out more.

In several not so recent studies, experts found that wearing a fitness tracker offered no real advantage or actually decreased your chances of success. A study from 2016 published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal, found that, after one year of use, a clip-on activity tracker had no effect on test subjects' overall health and fitness—even when it was combined with a financial incentive. Another study published in 2016, showed that subjects without fitness trackers lost more weight than their gadget-wearing counterparts—a difference of about eight pounds. All of this may be really embarrassing for companies that make fitness trackers, but should you ditch your fancy fitness tracker or forego purchasing one altogether? No, most of the studies conducted used fitness trackers that were several years old, and the studies were only recently published. Today's fitness trackers are different. They have more computing power than the first mission to the moon, and they are constantly evolving. Today's fitness trackers not only measure steps and active minutes, but most have 24/7 heart-rate monitoring and sleep tracking for starters. The batteries in some de-

16

vices can go several days between charges. Most manufacturers have listened to the users, and their devices are more comfortable and waterproof. Manufacturers have also made considerable improvements to their software. The information is presented in a way that is comprehensible, motivating, and actionable. Consider a reminder to get up and move or another reminder to complete your exercise for the day. If you have actionable goals, then a fitness tracker is definitely worth considering. Most trackers today are able to allow you to customize your goals. Several apps even allow you to set a goal such as running a marathon and they will tailor a program specifically for you. Today's fitness trackers will customize their feedback to users' individual habits. Rather than tell you to take 10,000 steps in a day, most trackers will nudge you when it seems you are not on target to reach your goal. Most trackers are also able to tell you how much you slept and the quality of your sleep.

Dulce Quince Magazine / Fall/Winter 2018

Fitness trackers have evolved and are continually changing to meet the demand of users. In the end, a fitness tracker only works if you use it. The information is only valid if you take it to heart. If your goal is fitness or knowing every detail of your fitness routine and the metrics of such, then a fitness tracker can be well worth the money. g

Pick a fitness tracker that includes the functions you think you need or will use the most.

Find a fitness tracker that is easy to use. You're more likely not to use a tracker if it's difficult.

Look for design issues. Does it have a button that will contastantly get in the way?

You should look for a fitness tracker that has customizable options.

If your tracker is not comfortable, you will not wear it. See what it feels like before you purchase.

Once again, you probabbly won't wear it if you don't feel it's fashionable. Tech typically isn't very fashionable, but there are plenty of options.

Q U I N C E A Ñ E R A / TRADITIONS

Traditions of the Quinceañera

No, your Quinceañera is not just another excuse for your parents to party!! A Quinceañera is a longstanding tradition inside the Latino culture, and it is widely celebrated in the United States today.

T

here is a contradiction as to the onset of the Quinceanera tradition. Many say that it started many years ago when the Spanish conquerors brought the traditions to Mexico; however, on the other hand, it has been noted that its origination is from the Aztecs. Regardless, the Quinceañera celebration is a rite of passage traditionally celebrated by Hispanics in Latin America. Here are some of the traditions commonly associated with a Quinceañera celebration. Quinceañera Mass The religious ceremony or mass is also known as the thanksgiving mass, and traditionally this is a time when the young girl renews her baptismal promise by keeping her relationship commitment to God and the Virgin Mary. The Changing of the Shoes The changing of shoes is a beautiful ceremony when the father changes his daughter's shoes, and replaces them with her first pair of heels. This tradition is a gift from the parents.

18

Dulce Quince Magazine / Fall/Winter 2018

Mariachi Band Serenade A tradition that has not seen much exposure is the serenading by a Mariachi band the night before her celebration. Waltz/Vals The Waltz/Vals is the entrance dance welcoming her into her grand ball. It is her introduction to her honored guest with a choreographed dance with her court de honor. Father-Daughter Dance The father-daughter dance is the first dance she shares with her dad. The father usually chooses the song. The dance is symbolizing her first public dance and recognizing that her father is the first man in her life. The Gown The Gown is a symbol of her first formal dress. Traditionally, the gown was mainly white; however, today with a wide array of dresses the traditional colors are no more. The Court de Honor The court is her party and traditionally is made up of fourteen chambelane's and fourteen damas, plus an escort for the quincea単era. This symbolizes her age when adding the couples in her court, herself and her escort. Quincea単era Doll The quincea単era doll is made to resemble the young girl, and it symbolizes the detachment of leaving her child-like possessions behind as she becomes a woman. Bracelet/Ring There is a bracelet, or a ring, usually gifted from the godparents. The symbol is round to symbolize the unfailing love that God has for her. Tiara The Tiara is her means to embrace the princess that she is in God. The wearing of earrings The wearing of earrings is not a symbolic gift, but a reminder to keep her ears open to God's message. The Bible The Bible is the most significant symbol in her commitment to faith in Christ. It is with His word that she will find answers. The Quincea単era or in English Sweet 15 celebration is a beautiful time in a young Latina girls life. The traditions are deeply rooted in God and her walk with her faith. Although there are many traditions, there is also a big party where she shares much laughter, delicious food, decadent sweets, lavish and beautiful decor and many great gifts. She is a princess! g

A city life quinceañera has so much to offer, plus it has endless uninterrupted views. Have you ever thought to have your Quinceañera in a city? The best part about having your Quinceañera in the city is thar there is no need for lights to make things sparkle. In the Latino culture, it is no secret that quinceañera parties can get a bit unhinged. Take advantage in the summer to have your quince on a rooftop where you can watch all the magic unfold. You will enjoy the cool breezes with delightful twilight ambiances, and inhale the beauty of a picturesque view for all to enjoy. Rooftops have so much to offer that you don't have to drag out all the decorations to make this venue dazzle. Create a comfortable atmosphere with lots of pillows, tiki torches, stringed lights, and a bunch of cocktail tables and don't forget the lounge seating. Just when you believe that you're close is when you both will discover that you are very different. Over the years it was easy because she admired you and you could do or say nothing wrong. Well...she outgrew those times, and now she is on her own. Your little sister will someday be the next Quinceañera in your family, but for now, she is bedazzled in the latest mini-me gowns. She likes to wear a gown just like her sister on the "BIG" day. She captures the attention of everyone and her smile just lights up the room. She is la futura princesa, and she is not afraid to strike a pose when she hears OMG she is too cute! Your younger sister can steal the party if you let her with her cute dimples, grandiose smiles, and batting eyelashes, as she commands the attention from the room.

merely practicing her arrival of the days when she embarks on her right of passage on her Quinceañera. She will set a stage that will be remembered, and she learned this all from you as she peeked in your doorway as you were prancing around. The time will come when your little sister has hit that

mile mark, and you can see all that she is and has accomplished, is due to your attitude and love for her. A Quinceañera is always in the making, and the legend does not end there. Influence great compassion, a humble attitude, and an abundance of love, so that your sister will follow suit. She will continue to look up to you even if you both differ dramatically. g

WEATHERIZE WINTER YOUR SKIN WITH THESE 7 IN-HOME REMEDIES FOR

Winter can be brutal on your skin, and you should make sure you protect it well. Winter has a way of cracking your skin which will eventually leave fine lines, scars and so forth. Combat these issues with natural remedies you already own in your home. You can use them solo or make them into a mask or scrub to get the most significant benefits for your skin.

1

Coconut Oil

Don't go cuckoo over coconuts! There is a debate on the origins of coconuts, but most say they originate from India. Coconut oil smells delish and feels terrific. Cooking with this oil makes all of your food feel and taste light. It has antibacterial and antifungal agents, and the oil is a great moisturizer, it can penetrate better than other oils. Coconut oil can combat atopic dermatitis which is a chronic eczema skin disease. A little-known fact is that coconut has been used in many cultures as a healing medicine. This is why they call it the tree of life, because it comes from a coconut palm tree. Don't just cook with it. Eat it! Use on your skin, or make a mask to enjoy the full benefits that coconut oil has to offer. Who says you have to climb a tree to get your coconut oil?

Coffee

Coffee grounds are not just for brewing while having a fabulous conversation amongst your friends. Sure, freshly brewed coffee smells incredible and tastes divine!! A little-known fact about coffee grounds is that they are an excellent exfoliant, plus they offer up more substantial properties for your skin. Coffee grounds can gently remove dead skin cells that will bring out healthy-looking skin. Coffee grounds have also been known to help with cellulite reduction. We all enjoy the natural ways to combat the many issues our skin will have to endure.

3

Milk/Almond Milk

Milk/Almond Milk is a wonderful moisturizer that naturally exfoliates your skin. Almond milk, on one hand, is packed with vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Milk will leave your skin less dry. Almond milk is considered a superfood due to its numerous health benefits, and is especially beneficial for skin, hair, and nails. The amount of protein delivered by almond milk is not substantial, but it can impact the health of your skin. The zinc in the milk also helps with blemished skin. Many foods you consume are rich in vitamin E among other minerals and vitamins. Vitamin E has significant properties and protects the skin against damage, scaring, and the harsh rays of the sun. It is an antioxidant found in almond milk, and it captures free radicals that may result in cancer. In essense milk doesn't only fight calcium deficiencies in our bones, but it also helps with the look and feel of our skin.

4

Honey

Honey is not just used for a spot of tea with the royals! Honey is a powerhouse moisturizer with antibacterial properties. You can't go wrong with this natural remedy.

5 Avocado

Guacamole comes to mind when someone mentions avocado. So who has some tortillia chips to get the party started? Although guac is a favorite to most, it also packs a punch to improve skin condition. It is highly abundant in healthy fats that your skin craves. Avocados play a significant benefit to your skin by protecting it from harmful rays, moisturizing, combating psoriasis, tackling acne, and reducing wrinkles. You can take an avocado and make a mask out of it, and get a cool smoothing sensation on your skin.

6

Egg Yolk

Yogurt

Some of us like our eggs deviled while others like them sunny-side up. In this particular instance, we are looking for the health of our skin when using egg yolks externally. Egg yolks contain vitamin A and lecithins that nourish the skin and treats dryness effectively. The yolk of an egg is made up of mostly water and fats, and it has the ability to lock in the necessary moisture your skin cells crave. Egg yolks will leave the face silky smooth and supple. They have a lot of protein, and this is the building block for skin tissue. Elasticity and repair are some of the things that egg yolks offer to your skin. They also have vitamin B3 which treats inflammatory skin problems while hydrating your skin. Eggs can help treat your acne issues too.

7

Did you know that yogurt is excellent with fresh fruit or to make a delicious parfait? Well, we won't be adding any fruit to this natural remedy that can help soothe itchy skin. Yogurt is a fantastic cleanser for your skin, it can improve the look and feel of your skin by reducing the blemishes. Yogurt is rich in zinc, calcium, vitamin B6, and other useful enzymes. It goes on smooth and feels cool to the touch plus it's refreshing and smells delighful. You can add avocado to make a scrub or a mask. Adding more ingrdients to this vitamin powerhouse, will only give your skin more benefits. You should be cautious and only use plain yogurt without any additives or flavors. Using yogurt with flavors or other radicals can cause a bad reaction and counter the purpose of using a great item you have in your home. Save the flavored stuff for eating!

more tips for healthy skin... Three bonus ideas for your skin are massage, scrubs, and steam. Massage the skin with effective circulation by using three of your fingertips to create a circular motion on your skin. By using this method, you will stimulate the cells in your skin to help activate areas that have poor circulation and clogging, plus it is the natural way to firm the skin. The steam bath is great for opening up pores that need deeper cleaning. If done correctly, it can help decrease blackheads and other skin issues. Scrubs are a fantastic way to accomplish great skin benefits. Use dead sea salt, sugar or coffee grounds and add them together to create the perfect remedy for your skin type.

Other items you can play with in-home, should include coconut oil, yogurts, milk, shea butter, avocados, honey, olive oil, and eggs. These are jam-packed with so many great vitamins and nutrients that your skin craves. Vitamins like E, D, B, etc. have significant effects on your skin Avoid alcohol or products that use this ingredient in their products. Alcohol dries the skin and creates more significant problems. Eating a vitamin enriched diet can also promote beautiful skin.

D A T I N G 1 0 1 / HOMECOMING

HOMECOMING?

S h o u d I A s k H I M To

When we looked back just a few years ago, it seemed that it was the guy who would ask you out to a school dance. Today, we are seeing more brave young ladies ask the question. Why not? Who's stopping you? What can it hurt?

W

hy not? We say go for it! You have a grip on what you want and who you want to escort you to your prom. Your friends may give you a hard time, but hey that's all good because at least you have the guts to go for it! You can listen to all the things your friends may say to you, but don't get discouraged. Perhaps your bravery may tempt your friends to follow suit at such a

remarkable time in your life. You could be the next trendsetter without even knowing it. Honestly, this is the twenty-first century, and boys today are more laid back. People may ask you, "What if he says, no"? You must ask yourself if you can handle rejection. Although rejection seems unfair or hurtful, it is an essential part of growing up and it honestly only makes you stronger, as long as you don't wallow in misery. We all are confronted with rejection, but what is most important is that you are brave enough to tackle it. It is how we rise, not how we fall, that speaks volumes.

Now down to the nitty-gritty! How will you ask him? Does he even know you exist, or is he one of your friends you have been crushin' on for some time now? It is best practice to just come out with it, and ask without beating around the bush. Be sure you ask him early on in case he is asked, or he asks someone else. Make it short and simple... like, hey are you interested in going to homecoming with me?

The worst that can happen is he says no, or he says let me think about it. No harm, no foul. Keep things upbeat, lose the surprised look or sad face if you don't get the answer you were hoping for! Let's say he doesn't even know you exist. Take this opportunity to do a bit of undercover work and find something that you two share in common together. If you discover that the two of you share something in common, then make this your window of opportunity to strike up a conversation. It is unfortunate that some boys have their cliques, and are sometimes pressured in their group of friends to keep a distant from what they believe are not the "cool people." Don't let that deter you from your moment of bravery. Fret not!! You know you are cool, and you know you have

what it takes to catch him. It just may take a little extra effort on your part to get you noticed. Just be sure he is worth the chase. The last thing you want is a guy who is full of himself. No one is really interested in spending time with an egotistical guy who doesn't recognize the beauty that stands in front of him. What if he says yes? Oh boy, this is a proud moment with rosy cheeks and butterflies in your belly. He said yes, and now you

have to spend time with him just so that you can coordinate your homecoming schedule. Will you go to the game together? That depends on what you two discussed. Have you picked the dress you want to wear and will it match what he is wearing? These are things you want to make sure you tie down so that you are prepared. Make shopping plans with your date so that you both can remain on the same page for your homecoming. Keep things lite, and when you go shopping, be gentle, because some boys don't care to shop. If they like you, though, they will be a bit giddy and excited to hang with you just to see your excitement and smile. Homecoming is a milestone in your life, so make it count and don't get discouraged if you don't land the date you wanted. g

S A F E T Y / HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Have You Seen Her? Missing or abducted in adolescents are occurring in the United States every forty seconds. Every forty seconds seems to be a minuscule number, but honestly, when we multiply that number over the course of a year, it averages out to a more significant number of children gone from their families. Any number is astronomical, and it leaves an unmet stain in the lives of the loved one missing their children.

48

Dulce Quince Magazine / Fall/Winter 2018

49

S A F E T Y / HUMAN TRAFFICKING There are many steps to protect yourself from being abducted, kidnapped, trafficked or smuggled. You should know that there are many types of abductions and you should make yourself aware of each one of them to protect yourself. The FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC) estimates that 85 to 90 percent of missing persons are children. The vast majority of these cases are resolved within hours. To identify your your perpetrator, you must know what type of predator you are up against. The highest percentage of abductions/ kidnappings is by a family member of the victim. Kidnapping by an acquaintance, friend, etc.. of the victim is the second highest abduction percentage. Lastly, kidnapping by a stranger which falls in the lowest percentile right below the acquaintance kidnapper. Most family kidnappings are primarily committed by a parent and are often perpetuated by a female. Sometimes a mother may kidnap her child(ren) in cases of domestic violence or in other instances a bad divorce and custody battle. Other times a parent may be mentally unstable or have substance abuse issues. Acquaintance kidnapping involves a high percentage of female and teenage victims. It is well-documented that the abduction is associated with other crimes especially abuse both sexually and physically. An acquaintance can be a school official, a friend, your gardener, co-worker or even an ex. Stranger kidnapping victimizes more females than males. It occurs mainly in outdoor settings. Many teenagers and school-aged children are also sexually assaulted. The number of children reported

50

missing and found is one out of every 10,000 children reported to the police. Runaways are not always what they seem, but they account for a significant portion of missing children. Many teens who are not happy with their home life, can suffer from anxieties or depression and have little to no parental supervision to comfort them. Sometimes they are fleeing abuse whether sexual, mental or physical, and they don't know where to turn. Attacks can start from a simple online chat room, to dating or personal interest groups. Be aware of your children's activities because many predators are lurking amongst us, and will do anything to satisfy their agenda. Over 70 percent of abductions are girls and teens, and their predator is usually a non-family member. Take action because three-quarters of abducted children are murdered within three hours of being abducted. "Although slavery is commonly thought to be a thing of the past, human traffickers generate hundreds of billions of dollars in profits by trapping millions of people in horrific situations around the world, including here in the U.S. Traffickers use violence, threats, deception, debt bondage, and other manipulative tactics to force people to engage in commercial sex or to provide labor, or services against their will." Dulce Quince Magazine / Fall/Winter 2018

Human Trafficking by The Numbers While more research is needed on the scope of human trafficking, below are a few key statistics: The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally. 81% of them are trapped in forced labor. 25% of them are children. 75% are women and girls. The International Labor Organization estimates that forced labor and human trafficking is a $150 billion industry worldwide. The U.S. Department of Labor has identified 139 goods from 75 countries made by forced, and child labor. In 2016, an estimated 1 out of 6 endangered runaways reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children were likely child sex trafficking victims. Of those, 86% were in the care of social services or foster care when they ran. There is no official estimate of the total number of human trafficking victims in the U.S. Polaris estimates that the total number of victims nationally reaches into the hundreds of thousands when estimates of both adults and minors, sex trafficking, and labor trafficking are aggregated." cited by Polaris https:// polarisproject.org/human-trafficking/facts "As of December 31, 2017, NCIC contained 88,089 active missing person records. Juveniles under the age of 18 account for 32,121 (36.5%) of the records and 41,089 (46.6%) records when juveniles are defined as under 21 years of age.* During 2017, 651,226 missing person records were entered into NCIC, an increase of .6% from the 647,435 records entered in 2016. Missing Person records purged during the same period totaled 651,215. Reasons for these removals include: a law enforcement agency located the subject, the individual returned home, or the record had to be removed by the entering agency due to a determination that the record is invalid." cited by FBI/NCIS

P L A N N I N G / VENDORS

I will not spend a dime on a vendor for something I can do myself! What? A Party Planner costs how much? And what is an MC? We do not need that... “I could easily do that” is the first thought that comes to your mind.

52

Dulce Quince Magazine / Fall/Winter 2018

Your quince party is not a regular party; it is a very overwhelming and intense event; It is a memory for a lifetime, a stepping stone, and you should treat it as such. I know that when you are planning the party, at the end comes a huge bill that we all ignore because if I do not look at it does not exist! However, the truth is there are expenses, and then there are investments and trust me, a Party Planner and an MC (Master of Ceremonies) are a must. The Party planner is your right hand while you plan this wonderful event, and the phantom behind the scenes that makes things happen and more than once may save the day without you even noticing. Your Planner will help you with things that you have no experience with; they help you find vendors and prioritize, according to your dreams and budget. Of course, you can handle it all on a regular day, but on your Quince party, you are not only the primary attraction. You are the host, and everyone wants to be with you and your parents. You also should have time to party and enjoy. As much as we would like to do it all, that is impossible, and you need to delegate

the tasks on that day. If you are already paying for thae day, you might as well have help during the entire process. The price is really worth it. The MC is the person that will integrate all the elements of the event together, so everyone understands what is next. For a moment, Imagine the Oscars. The MC is the one that leads the event and makes it run smoothly. Sure, there are several presenters during the Oscars, but the MC is the one who keeps the show going and puts the spotlight on whomever or whatever should be the focus at the time. The Master of Ceremonies makes sure guests feel involved, and are enthusiastic and participate in all of the awesome things you have planned for during your big day! Your MC is the expert that will take the party to the next level. Your guests might not remember every detail about what happened, but they will never forget that it was a great time and that your party was legendary!!! So the next time you think “maybe I should save on the Party Planner and the MC”, think again. Those two are a must! by Ana Medina

ngelina's quince was held on a Saturday, May 29th at a beautiful venue in Gaithersburg, MD. Dulce Quince Magazine was in attendance, and we enjoyed being a part of such a lovely family who made us feel at home. They have been nothing more than supportive of our magazine and our mission. We met Angelina and her family from the launch of our first issue of Dulce Quince Magazine, and have remained a part of the family to date. Angelina's quince was a magical Paris theme with Eifel tower centerpieces, lots of bling, and lights. We enjoyed all the glam of Angelina's quince with bold colors of pinks, and tables set with a beautiful touch of Paris. Rain did not put a damper on Angelina's extravaganza!! She and her court of honor rolled up in their stretch Hummer limo and sturck poses as they stepped out of the limo.

Angelina Photography by Quince Video

We were ecstatic when Elsa, Angelina's mom, asked us to provide a backdrop for her daughters quinceañera. Her backdrop was made of twenty feet of lighted chiffon draping and pearl balloons. Princess Angelina sat in a beautiful leather throne chair embellished with silver edging. The throne sat at a life-size 15 table which was fitting for any girls quince. The cake was a Three tier light pink and white Dominican Cake and she also had a cupcake letter box that spelled out her name. Angelina wore a beautiful lace and beaded pink quinceañera gown, while her damas wore lovely white chiffon dresses. The chambelanes had very sharp suits with vests. They all looked amazing! Angelina's dad was truly macked out with a white tuxedo and a beret. Mom looked like Ginger Rogers wearing a fitted sleek and elegant gown...she was fierce. The food was delicious, and they had a variety of cultural cuisines that served everyone's tastes. The DJ was on point with great music that kept the dance floor crowded the entire night. Angelina's quinceañera was remarkable and rememberable for all to enjoy. g Fall/Winter 2018 / Dulce Quince Magazine

PaintOver Y

ou are in the mood to try something new in your room, but not quite able to figure it out! Get gabbing with your girlfriends, and have a paint party. While you are at it, make it a sleepover. Now let's not get ahead of ourselves and overdo it!! You ask What is a Paintover? A paintover is when you call all the gals and tell them the party is about to start. You let them know that they need to bring some old clothes they don't mind getting ruined. You also let them know that pajamas are quintessential to the theme. You must make a full plan with who is in charge of what, and what foods you will munch on, along with great tunes to pass the time. Painting your room is not just splattering paint everywhere, it takes some skill

that you and the girl tribe can handle. Make it fun and make it memorable.

You can start with doing some research on what you want to do with your room and perhaps ask the besties! Make it an allday event by having your friends help you pick out some awesome colors and designs, but be sure your parents are in on this. Get mom or dad or both to drive you to the paint store or your local hardware store to pick out some samples. If you have the design and color/colors, then tell your friends that they need to come prepared and be ready to explore their artistic side! Since your friends are helping, you may want to ask the grown-ups if they could set up some scrumptious munchies,

drinks, and desserts to sweeten the deal.

Be sure you get instructions from your parents so that you don't make a disaster out of the fun. I mean, who wants paint on the face...lol! Get your drop cloth laid out on the floor, designate who will tape what. Also decide who is in charge of the brushes and rollers, and what colors to use if painting with more than one color. Now let the excitement begin. Having a paint party can be a bit messy, but less exhausting because you have help. Limit the number of friends you invite, so that you don't overcrowd your room and have fewer accidents as a result. The moment you lay on the first stroke of paint is when the party becomes real. The joy of painting, when combined with music and food, is a load of fun! Get yourself ready and let the paintover begin. #Have Fun! #Laugh More! #Share Space! #Best Friends! #PaintOver g

D U L C E Q U I N C E Q U I Z / DATING

what's your dating algorithm? 1. Does he have

to meet a Hotness factor?

____A He should come to my door and pick me up and open all doors for me on our date.

____A He has to be really attractive or he won't stand a chance.

____B Looks are important, but hygiene is a deal breaker.

____C I am more interested in his personality than his cute factor. Looks are not as important.

2. Does he pay

for your meal on a first date?

____A On a first date, I expect a guy to pay for my meal and rightfully so.

____B It all depends on how the date is going. If the date is good then he can pay, but if the date is not so good then I will split the bill. I don't want to lead him on to believe there is a second date on bad first dates.

60

____C I am independent, so I prefer to pay for my own meal and he pays for his.

3. After a good

first date you?

____A Call your besties and tell them everything!

____B Daydream about him and go over in your head of whether he likes you the same.

____C You don't really get phased about first dates because they really never have worked out for you.

4. Do you

expect him to be a gentleman?

Dulce Quince Magazine / Fall/Winter 2018

____B Sure, he should at least text me when he arrives to let me know he is here.

____C Yes, but he does not need to get every door for me or pay for all of our meals.

5. Should he be Smart?

____A Umm, I don't care about his smarts as much as I care about his hotness.

____B Yes, I want for him to be able to carry a conversation and not be oblivious to the world.

____C Absolutely, he has to be uber smart to date me because I don't care about his looks as much as his personality and wits.

The Breakdown Mostly A's

Shallow You care more about the exterior than you do about the person you are having a date with. You are at the stage where outer appearances supercede the depth of a person. You don't acknowledge other peoples worth because your only measure is how good they look. Mostly B's

Level Headed You like nice things and appreciate them, but you care equally about other people and their feelings. You strive for being fair-minded and fair-hearted. You are able to switch gears in most situations because you see others as you would want them to see you. Mostly C's

Independent Your independence is a great trait, but sometimes it can be overbearing because you may not always understand where someones kindness is really coming from. You may scare many dates away because you can't find comfort in truly allowing another to do something as basic as caring.
