Thank you,

In 2013, Rosa made the decision to found her own company, Roma Vista Photography, focusing on weddings, lifestyle, and family portraiture for her clients. With the support and referrals from family and friends, Roma Vista 7

Photography has grown and expanded to offer professional videography services in the Washington Metropolitan area. With old-fashioned hard work and a desire to exceed client expectations, Rosa has been hired to cover many beautiful weddings, national conference events, elegant galas, Capitol Hill events, and political marches in Washington, DC. All the while she continues to work full-time in a doctor’s office, and raise a family alongside her husband. Rosa is native of El Salvador but was raised in Washington, DC since coming to the United States at the age of two. She continues tp be proud of her heritage and culture. She is family focused and enjoys spending time with her two younger brothers and younger sister on her time off.

Latina Influences

Rosa Cuyun is the founder and owner of Roma Vista Photography offering professional photography and videography services to her clients. You can say that Rosa’s love of photography was instilled in her by her father, Santiago. As a child, Rosa’s father Santiago loved taking family photos and videos at family gatherings. Rosa’s childhood home was decorated with framed family photos all over the walls. This cultivated a love of capturing special moments in people’s lives and ultimately led Rosa to harness this passion into a career.

Some of her favorite things to do are, relaxing on a beach, wine tasting at the beautiful vineyards of Leesburg, VA and indulging herself in nature at Deep Creek Lake. Rosa is a wonderful mother of three beautiful kids Brittney, Marvin, and Alyssa. She enjoys shopping with them now that they are all teenagers and assisting them with interior

design advice for their rooms. As any mother can testify, raising a family and owning your own business can be quite a challenge. On a regular basis, Rosa manages her time around the activities of her children even if it requires staying up late editing files for her clients. Another challenge is the physical toll of the professional gear that is required for certain shoots, but over the years Rosa has employed very helpful and reliable assistants. With pure grit and determination, Rosa manages to balance a healthy lifestyle and grow her business. Whenever possible, she enlists her children to assist her on shoots so that they can get a taste of the business and see if it is something they would like to pursue as an adult. What Rosa enjoys the most about professional photography is being able to provide images to her clients that make them step back in time and relive the moment all over again. Most of the time, the bride and groom are not able to enjoy the little details of their wedding day and Rosa is able to provide them with the experience of enjoying those subtle moments they missed. Although she misses weekend events with her family from time to time, Rosa still loves what she does, and is excited to share her professional talents with her many clients. g Rosa Cuyun, (240)460-8943 Owner, Roma Vista Photography romavistaphotography@gmail.com www.romavistaphotography.com

Ask naya

Naya Perez is an honor roll student with big dreams and aspirations to pursue. She lives in Maryland and is proud of her Latino heritage. Naya sits down to read every question that her readers submit and makes an honest effort to answer them accordingly. Please send your questions to info@dulcequince.com for our next issue.

Dear Naya, I want to have a quince but how do I ask my parents or know if they can afford to have one for me? - Sarah, Maryland

harm. I personally have never really had to deal with any serious bullying issues other than name calling or people just being rude. Although it may be tempting to confront the bully, you should notify a trusted school staff member to address the issue.

Dear Sarah, I would sit down with my parents and suggest the idea of me having a quince. How big or glamorous the quince is would depend on their budget.

Dear Naya, How do you have relations with boys and make sure you stay on top of your school work? - Angie, Alexandira, VA

Dear Naya, I want to try out for cheerleading, but I’m scared I won’t make the squad. Should I try out anyway even if I don’t have any cheer experience? -Angelina, Gaithersburg, MD Dear Angelina, Yes, you should try out even if you don’t have any experience. There is a first time for everything, and I’m sure there will be other people on the cheer team that also have little to no experience. Dear Naya, During school have you ever dealt with bullies? If so, how did you handle the situation? - Kiersten, Hagerstown, MD Dear Kiersten, I’m pretty sure everyone has dealt with some form of bullying at some point in their life whether it’s silly name-calling or physical 9

Dear Angie, I just remember that school is always my first priority. Once I get my school work done, then I can hang out with boys or do what I want in my free time. But I always get my work done first that way it’s done and out of my way, so I don’t have to worry about it anymore. Dear Naya, Do I have to wear a tiara for my Quinceañera? Are there alternatives? - Daniella, Lancaster, PA Dear Daniella, Although it is tradition to wear a tiara for Quinceañeras, you do not have to wear one. There are other options, such as wearing accessories with feathers. You can also wear nothing. It’s really all up to you because after all, it’s your Quinceañera.

The Court of Honor is a rite of passage in the Latino custom of a Quinceañera. Every court of honor is different and varies in size. Traditionally, the Quinceañera court consists of seven females which are Damas, and seven males which are Chambelane’s. The Chambelane’s are the escorts of the young Quince. The members of the court represent the age of the young girl before her fifteenth birthday. The court along with the young Quince makes up fifteen in total, hence the age at her birthday. Members of the court typically dress in formal attire and consist of her closest friends, cousins or other relative to the young girl.

A Quinceañera is much like a wedding…there is a ceremony, reception, a court of honor/bridesmaids and groomsmen. The difference is that a Quince is a transition for a young girl to a woman and a Bride is joining hands with her best friend. In both traditions, they are surrounded by family and are both a rite of passage. g

A Quinceañera has many traditions with some presenting the young girl with a scepter which represents her transition into womanhood. The scepter is often given to her by her parents along with family. The court of honor is very involved in her Quinceañera. Those who are chosen to take part in her court must take this task with honor and pride. Traditionally, they will learn a dance which is generally choreographed and taken very seriously. They must meet for each dance rehearsal to perfect the entrance dance. This performance is her grand entrance into her reception presenting her to her honored guests. The dance is called a Val, but for some, it is known as the birthday waltz. 12

Dulce Quince MAGAZINE

As you begin to plan for your birthday celebration and embark on this profound rite of passage, we want to ensure you have the necessary planning tools. Planning a QuinceaĂąera can be fun, exciting, but can also create unwanted stress. We would like to relieve this unwanted stress by providing you with a list to help you along the way. We know the gown is at the top of the list, but the venue supersedes that variable.

We have found that the venue sets the tone from decor to what dates are available to host your grand party. Your vendors will thank you if this part of your planning is locked down. They may want to visit the space and ask the venue questions to ensure they are a fit for the site and your QuinceaĂąera.

20

Dulce Quince Magazine | dulcequince.com

Here are some great questions you should ask when shopping your venue. I am having my Quinceaùera on______________. What dates are available? What times do we have access to the venue for setup and departure? What happens if we go past the time allotted? Will there be a fee if we do? Do you have a floor plan/layout with capacity chart for your venue? What is the fee to rent the venue? Are there additional costs? Do you have off-season rates? Do we have to make a deposit? How much to hold and how often is payment? Does your venue have handicap accessibility? Can you provide information? What is your weather contingency plan for outdoor space? Is open lit flames allowed? Can we tack, tape or hang decorations? What area’s are we renting? Are there spaces of the venue that are off-limits? Do you have in-house catering or vendors? Can you provide a list of your vendors? What does the rental include? Tables, linens, chairs, plates, etc..? If you have your own caterers do you have a menu package with pricing and all it includes? Do you offer a food tasting? Is there fees? What items can we sample? Are outside vendors allowed? Will they have access to a kitchen? Are there fees? What time can my vendors arrive for setup prior to my event? Can we bring our own alcohol? Do we have to request a permit? Do we need a bartender? Is your facility licensed to have alcohol? Is there a noise ordinance? What are those hours? Is there onsite parking? If not, where can our guests park? Do you have onsite coordination/planning? Does that come with the rental? Do you have liability insurance and are you in compliance with state and county? Can you provide copies of your license and permits? Do you have overnight accommodations? Do you offer discounts for multiple rooms? Can I get a copy of your contract to take home and review? Do you have references and reviews? 21

Mom! I like this one. “There are times when my mom gets on my nerves! I’m planning my quince and, suddenly, she really doesn’t get me! But I later remember that, in the end, she is always right, (though I’ll never admit this in front of her) and I’m very thankful for having her with me to share these moments.” During the planning of your quince party, there will be several uncomfortable moments with your parents, during which you will want to say, “I don’t want this anymore, thanks!” The best advice I can give you is to find the best way to communicate to them what you want, what you like, and why. Let them know it isn’t just a whim. The reason you want to keep the peace goes beyond the sad but true, fact that your parents are paying for the party. They are making all the financial sacrifices this carries, but the actual reason is: imagine that they weren’t with you, that your mom couldn’t be with you during this significant moment, that you didn’t have her guidance. So, instead of getting angry, think about how it is also a great day for them, a day when they can show you off and let the world know how proud they are of you. This birthday belongs to everyone! It’s yours to celebrate and theirs to be proud of you and the long journey that has led you here. Have fun with them and enjoy knowing that you are what’s most important in their lives and that they will be at your side to make the best of every experience, and your quince is not an exception. Have a happy road towards your quince.

Understanding Bullying And Surviving It

B

ullying is a derogatory behavior about superiority through demonstrating strength and inflicting fear on others who are unable to defend themselves. Bullies inflict pain by way of verbal abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, or mental abuse to instill fear. It is unfortunate that many of us will encounter some form of bullying throughout our lives. Bullying does not discriminate, and it is imperative to provide the right resources to those being bullied. Let’s look deeper into this epidemic and shed light as to why a bully feels the need to hurt others. Abuse, neglect, and lack of compassion are some of the most common traits of a bully. It is no surprise that some bullies come from loving homes with good parents. However, stress and pressure can be the culprit to making a person snap.

Most bullies have been bullied in their past or are currently being bullied by someone they know. The tone and actions of a coach, a parent struggling with an addiction, a jealous sibling, an envious teammate and so forth. These are some factors that create the bully mentality, and when gone unnoticed, that individual will lash out at others who appear weaker than themselves. Bullying should never be condoned or rewarded by any means. It is important to understand why someone would hurt another by way of intimidation, violent behavior, and abusive words. What we now know is that you may be a victim of a bully, who is also being bullied as well. Here are a few ways to change the playing field. It is important that you talk to your parents about being bullied. Share all the details of how they make you feel day 32

Dulce Quince Magazine | dulcequince.com

to day. You should also let your school counselor, the principal or a teacher know about these behaviors. By doing this, you have now made it public knowledge that you will no longer tolerate being bullied. You also have now taken steps to help stop this behavior, and you are not alone. Your actions will benefit others bullied today. There are support groups that can help you find peace from the fear of abuse. Be sure your friends and close acquaintances know about the bullying so that they can responsibly help when it happens. Their active intervention tells the bully that he/ she can no longer demean or hurt you because you have people who care about you. g

“Keep in mind that: Hurting people hurt people

Hidden Hills Farm and Vineyard Inspired by the beautiful rolling hills of Frederick County, Maryland and our love for horses, we began to design an environmentally-friendly horse farm for ourselves and others. Hidden Hills Horse Farm is now a state-of-the-art facility with large wide-open pastures suitable for an entire herd of horses. Beautiful trails were carefully carved through the woods, complete with obstacles and pristine running water. We left many acres uncut to grow hay to feed the horses, staying true to our passion for maintaining green spaces and sustainable agriculture. Robin envisioned a woman-owned vineyard to be the perfect complement to the rolling green hills of the Frederick County farm and her passion for wine. Hidden Hills Vineyard was born, growing our own grapes in order to produce notable wines. The varietals were carefully selected, staying true to the climate and the region. Our wines are crafted in small blocks, showcasing their best characteristics with a refined complexity. We invite you to cast aside your daily concerns and come experience both the beautiful property and the 40

wines for yourself. The gates to Hidden Hills Farm and Vineyard are now open for you to schedule your appointment.

But it’s still a long way away…

by Ana Medina, Inhouse Planner I know that your quince is still more than a year away, but it is always the right time to start planning your Quince party. Dreams have no start or expiration date, and if it excites you to plan your party and have everything turn out to be divine, may nothing stop you. If you plan your party with a lot of anticipation, you will have the advantage of defining what you want. Nowadays, there are many ways to check out different ideas that, after a while, may get confusing, but don’t fret. See them all, shop around, look at pictures, find many venues! The more in advance you plan your event, the more opportunities you will have to find what drives you wild and get it; which is how you’ll choose what you really liked for your party to become 44

a unique event with its own style and highlights that will make it unforgettable. What’s more, you may even start a trend that catches on. I’ll tell you a little secret; your quince is not just one day, not just one party, it is a highly planned-out event that you can start to enjoy since the first time you browse through pictures to see what dress you want. Enjoy the planning time! All that planning revolves around you! Those anecdotes and snapshots will be a great memory once the party is all done. The best stays with you within the memories of the process you went through during the planning stages. Have a happy road towards your quince.

Each of us craves a strong connection with our counterparts and will do almost anything to hold onto it even if we know it is not healthy. What is most important is never to allow that connection to leave you blind. Let’s talk about a controlling partner and how it can be damaging on so many levels. A person who exhibits controlling behaviors will almost always want things their way with no room for compromising. They don’t see any options other than theirs and that your opinion is useless. They are rarely honest and will most often hide things from you because to them it gives them power over you. In some relationships and at times they will make fun of you and without a sincere apology say they are sorry.

A controlling partner will more than likely do whatever they want when they want and how they want, but you can never do this because it is a one-sided relationship. Some controlling partners can or will become physically abusive and most often have mastered the verbal abusive behaviors. Everything is a convenience for them, and you must comply because if you don’t, they may lash out at you. They may go as far as crying and sharing a touching false story to gain your trust again. Please be cautious if your partner grabs you or just goes into an immediate rage. This behavior is an act of defiance, and they feel threatened because they feel a loss of power over you. Please know that this may not be the person for you. Please re-evaluate your relationship and consider leaving a person if they become violent using hateful words or use physical force. You are not a priority, and you should run. Does your partner get easily angered over the smallest details? Do they feel as though they are always right? If you share any discord, do they lash out with anger? A good relationship allows both of you to make decisions separately and together, the ability to discuss these decisions as a couple and making time to do so. Healthy conversations mean you both bring value and worth to each other and that you respect each other’s differences. You should never feel that your 47

relationship decreases your value. Compromising in your relationship is a big key to making the best of your relationship. It speaks volumes about the quality of your relationship. Do not settle for someone who makes you feel less of a person and who is willing to compromise your worth. Are you dating someone who is too private? If so, this is not a good trait when it is excessive. You want mystery, but not secrets. Being to private is not a good quality to look for in your relationship. If their phone rings, does your partner leave the room? Do they have a password on their phone and are they adamant on never letting you know it? If you see a message that makes you feel uncomfortable and you confront them how do they act? If they get angry and tell you, it is nothing, but your gut is telling you something is wrong then, follow your gut feeling. It is always important to have a neutral, unbiased friend to confide in, but keep that circle tight. If your partner hides their phone or is always texting while you are spending time together, you may want to re-evaluate your priorities. Never having any time for you, or being overly private, and secretive about why they can’t make time for you should raise a red flag. Whatever you do, don’t compromise who you are for someone who doesn’t take the time to get to know you. Remember that you are worthy, not worthless.

Signs Of Abusive Dating

D

ating brings the butterflies and feelings of completeness. It is always important to be sure as a young teen to see the signs of ill-treatment. Because you are in love, you may miss the signs because in your eyes your partner is perfect until it is too late. We want to ensure that you see the warning signs early on. Here are some areas we will discuss so that you can recognize them while dating. Keep an eye out for signs of controlling, bursts of anger, unwillingness to compromise or being too private. Many of these behaviors are learned traits from their environment, so don’t assume that they are bad people, but more so misdirected.
