Pumpkin Palooza • Babies, Toddlers, Kids

It’s pumpkin season and we’re celebrating fall with a pumpkin-themed storytime at 10:00, followed by some drop-in, pumpkin-decorating fun. Bring your own pumpkin or Whole Foods Co-op will be there with a limited supply of pumpkins and Parks and Recreation will have everything you need to paint, carve, and create!

Adventure Book Club • Adults

Join us for a book discussion and optional low-impact hike in one of Duluth's beautiful parks. We will meet at Chambers Grove Park to discuss An Immense World, by Ed Yong. Star Turtle Musical Adventure • Preschool to Elementary Age

Join Z Puppets Rosenschnoz (award-winning performers, Chris Griffith (Cherokee Nation) and Shari Aronson) for a musical adventure into the Cherokee language with Dagsi Turtle and Jisdu Wabbit, who are traveling through time and space on a quest to help Grandmother Turtle. Sing along and help fuel their Turtleship to bring the Cherokee language into the future. Geared for ages 4 and up.

Mini Monster Mash • Birth to 5

Calling all little monsters, princesses, dinosaurs, and pirates— any young one who wants to show off their costume and their moves! Drop in for a ghoulishly good dance party, play time, and Halloween-themed crafts. At 11:00 am, we’ll line up for a costume parade and trick-or-treating around the library. Geared to ages birth to 5 years, but all children and their caregivers are welcome.

Family Storytime • Birth to Kindergarten

These 30-minute storytimes are for children birth to kindergarten and their grown-ups. The focus is on having fun while sharing the joy of learning essential early literacy skills. Come enjoy stories, songs, rhymes, and fingerplays!

Craig Blacklock Presents: LightWaves: Abstract Photographs of Reflections from Lake Superior

Join us for an evening of landscape photography! Craig Blacklock, photographer and owner of Blacklock Photography Galleries in Moose Lake, will offer a peek into the work and stories behind his latest exhibition, Light Waves: Abstract Photographs of Reflections from Lake Superior. Suitable for all ages.

Twin Ports Perceptions Project: Panel Discussion • Adults

Quick, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear somebody say, “Superior”? How about “Duluth”? The Twin Ports Perceptions project invites three award-winning Twin Ports authors to participate in a moderated panel discussions to talk about how they portray Duluth and Superior in their work, how they grapple with issues of regional identity, and the challenges and joys of writing about where they live. You’re invited to join the discussion and add your perspective to the conversation. How would you characterize the “personalities” of the Twin Ports?

Are you an artist, writer, or a TRPG player? Learn the ins and outs of worldbuilding—the process of developing fictional settings and cultures for your story! NASA Inspires Futures for Tomorrow’s Youth (NIFTY) Series: Meet an Astrophysicist!

For this session, we will be joined (via Zoom) by Research Astrophysicist, Dr. Jessica Gaskin. Dr. Gaskin will lead hands-on activities to explain the work that she has done with NASA at Marshall Space Flight Center for Lynx Mission, an x-ray observatory. X-ray observatories detect x-ray emissions from very hot regions of the universe such as exploded stars, clusters of galaxies, and the matter around black holes. Geared for youth ages 9-14. Registration is required.

Pickle Autopsy and a Movie • Grades 6-12

Your help is needed to solve a mystery! A renegade group of pickles met with an unfortunate end and it’s up to you wonderful, brilliant teen coroners, to identify the causes of death. In order to do this, we must dissect the remains in an effort to explain the demise of your pickle. “Relish” the process as you put your detective hats on and dive in while watching the movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife (PG-13, 124 Minutes). Non-pickle snacks will be served, while supplies last!

Watch Anime, create, play games, and hang out with others who love Anime! Pizza will be served while it lasts. Exclusively for teens in grades 6 – 12. For October's gathering, we will be creating Frankentoys! All supplies provided; no registation needed.

Hallowteen at the Library • Grades 6-12

Summoning tweens and teens to the library for a halloween party! Costumes are not required but everyone who comes in costume will have a chance to win a loot bag filled with snacks, prizes, and a gift card! Join us for crafts, a Halloween movie, optional zombie dancing, pizza, and candy! Pizza will be served while it lasts.

Exploring Graphic Memoir with Lynn Von Sien • Teens & Adults

Discover the rich, diverse history of Graphic Memoir! Attendees will take away knowledge of the genre's elements as well as Take & Create exercises and resources to explore the craft further. This program will be guided by local writer and artist, Lynn Von Sien, recipient of Arrowhead Regional Arts Council (2021) and Minnesota State Arts Board (2023) grants supporting her work in graphic memoir. Geared to ages 12 and up. No registration.

Demystifying Tarot • Teens & Adults

Why is everyone talking about Tarot? Spiritual health professional, Carolyn, of The Village Witch, will be here to introduce attendees to the 78-card Tarot deck and share information about its origins and history. She will also share her thoughts on how you can develop your own Tarot practice and utilize it as a tool for relection, instrospection, and insight. No registration needed. Geared for Tarot beginners but all experience levels are welcome!

Celebrate this most spooktacular time of the year by making a mini Halloween diorama in a jar. You will want to leave it up all year round! Due to the skills necessary to complete this craft, this project is suitable for teens and older. Registration required.

Make Custom Postcards! • Teens, Adults, Seniors

Celebrate International Postcard Week by making your own custom postcard to mail to a friend or family member. All materials needed but postage stamps will be provided. This craft class is intended for patrons teen and older.

Library Day at the Planetarium • All Ages

Learn about the eclipse and the stars above us at the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium on the UMD campus! Present your library card for free admission to one of four showtimes. Before you leave the show, be sure to pick up a free pair of solar glasses to use for eclipse viewing on Saturday, October 14! One pair of solar glasses per attendee. Marshall W. Annular Solar Eclipse Extravaganza • All Ages Sun and space enthusiasts of all ages are invited to the to the Solar Eclipse Extravaganza for a viewing party, solar crafts, and to learn about what is happening in the sky! Free safe-viewing solar glasses will be distributed to program attendees while supplies last. View the eclipse on the library plaza with your solar glasses or via livestream in the Green Room. A SunSpotter Solar Telescope, provided by a grant awarded to the library by NASA Inspires Futures for Tomorrow’s Youth (NIFTY), will be available as well. Happy viewing!

The Mt. Royal Book Club meets the first Wednesday of each month to discuss both fiction and nonfiction selections. New members are always welcome! October’s selection is The Woman in Black. Arthur Kipps is a London solicitor who is sent to attend the funeral and settle the affairs of Mrs. Alice Drablow of Eel Marsh House. The routine business trip he anticipated takes a horrifying turn when he finds himself haunted by a series of mysterious sounds and images and, most terrifying of all, a ghostly woman dressed all in black.

HoneyHeist Role Playing Game • Teens and Adults

Join us for the first ever HoneyHeist game, where you play as a group of bears trying to steal honey from unsuspecting local townsfolk. Entry-level; no previous experience is needed.
