Statement of Policy

Dulwich College Shanghai aims to offer as many sports as the College can reasonably support and will compete in the following conferences â&#x20AC;&#x201C; FOBISIA, ACAMIS, SISAC, CISSA, SSL and DCA Games. The College provides high quality coaching to students as they seek to reach their full sporting potential. The programme seeks to promote the fundamental characteristics of commitment, loyalty, cooperation, leadership and an appreciation of the role and value of the individual within a team framework.

Sportsmanship We expect our students, coaches, parents and supporters to represent Dulwich College Shanghai in a manner that is respectful to others. It is our responsibility to help develop and practice the highest standards of courtesy, discipline and sportsmanship as both hosts and guests.

We have a strong and committed coaching staff at the College with many nationalities contributing to the programme. This year we have assigned Heads of Sport for Basketball, Football, Netball, Rugby, Volleyball, and Swimming. These coaches have many years experience in their respective sports and the enthusiasm to improve the programme at the College.

SISAC, ACAMIS, FOBISIA and SSL This membership provides opportunities for competitive sport against other schools. Each organisation sets its own sporting seasons, rules and regulations. As local opportunities for competitive sport are limited our membership of these organisations is vital to our establishment of a quality sports programme.

China International Schools Sports Association (CISSA) is an organisation that provides over twenty Shanghai and surrounding city international schools with a comprehensive sports programme for Under 12 and Under 14, in four distinct seasons; covering touch rugby, football, volleyball and basketball. Most teams will will play in a league, a game being scheduled on a Tuesday or Thursday each week, culminating in the “Cross River Event” at the end of the season. Rugby and netball for Under 9 - Under 15 is also catered for through the DCS convened Shanghai Junior Division. Shanghai International Schools Activities Conference (SISAC) is an organisation that provides over 20 Shanghai and surrounding city international schools with a comprehensive sports programme in volleyball, basketball and football, for students aged 19 and under.

There are also other SISAC events offered throughout the year in netball, rugby and swimming. Teams will be involved in a league with either one or several games a week culminating in the “Finals Weekend” at the end of the season. Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) is an overseas conference providing high quality competition against other major British International schools across Asia in a 3-day competition incorporating four sports. Annual dates are as follows: U15 FOBISIA (Nov/Dec) Athletics, Basketball and Football U13 FOBISIA (March / April) Athletics, Basketball, Football and Swimming U11 FOBISIA (May / June) Athletics, Football, T-ball and Swimming Shanghai Swim League (SSL) is a sports conference specifically for swimming within Shanghai and surrounding international schools in the city. DCS attends various swimming galas throughout the year within and outside Shanghai. As well as full engagement in the above affiliated federations , the College also enters a number of invitational tournaments.

DCS has two swim squads: Redfin for the Senior School team and Bluefin for the Junior School team. Our swim teams train throughout the entire academic year. The swimmers compete at swim meets in the Shanghai Swim League and swim at the age related FOBISIA games across South East Asia. We will also be participating at specific international swimming meets in 2014/2015.

As an extremely popular sport, we have football teams representing the College all year round depending on the age group and season. Students from Year 3 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 13 can try out for the College sides with boys and girls teams across the age groups. Our students compete in CISSA, SISAC, ACAMIS, DCA and FOBISIA Games throughout the year. In 2013/2014 twenty seven teams competed across the city, nationally and internationally gaining great success at all age levels.

Dulwich College Shanghai offers a volleyball programme consisting of multiple teams for both boys and girls at CISSA level for Years 6 and 7, and Years 7-9. Teams are involved in Shanghai wide inter-school matches and tournaments during their allocated seasons and have shown strong performances on a regular basis. Opportunities also exist at a SISAC and ACAMIS level for Years 10-13, which provide a strong competitive league that encourages students to travel and compete against other schools within China.

At Dulwich College Shanghai we successfully run a Basketball programme that consists of multiple representative teams for both boys and girls at CISSA level Years 6 and 7, and Years 7-9 teams are involved in Shanghai wide inter-school matches and tournaments during their allocated seasons. Opportunities also exist at a SISAC and ACAMIS level for Years 10-13, which provide a strong competitive league that allows students to travel and compete not only Shanghai, but against other schools across China.

The college offers representative teams at U11, U13, U15 and U19 age groups. Teams compete in inter - school fixtures and at ACAMIS / SISAC and CISSA Tournaments. We have a strong reputation and are currently Shanghai Champions at every age level. We regularly attend the Beijing Netball/Rugby Tournament in the summer term with U11, U13 and U15 teams and compete against teams from Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Dubai and K.L. To date we have enjoyed wins at U11 plate and U13 and U15 Cup level.

The college offers representative teams at U9, U11, U13, U15 and U19 age groups. Teams compete in inter - school fixtures and at ACAMIS / SISAC and East China Tournaments. We have a strong reputation and bring out more sides and students than any other school. The Touch Rugby is equally impressive winning the U14 Citywide Championship for a third year in succession. We look forward to the prospect of competing at the inaugural U16 ACAMIS Touch event in the coming season.

Junior

A team of 40 U11 students compete internationally against the top five schools in the region across four sports (swimming, athletics, T-ball and football) in an intensive annual event. The College also competes in the DCA (Dulwich College Asia) games at athletics and football. Those selected for FOBISIA cannot take part in this event in order to increase opportunities for Junior School students.

Senior

The events differ slightly to the U11 games in that basketball replaces T-ball. A maximum of 36 students can be selected (18 boys and 18 girls) from Y 7 and Y 8 for the U13, and Y9 and Y10 for the U15 games. DCS competes in the top division of FOBISIA along with other top international schools in Asia.

The College participates in a number of local, national and international tournaments each year. In each case, there are clearly stated selection policies. To a great extent, these policies are determined by the governing body, although the College may make some changes from time to time.

The main international tournaments are organised by FOBISIA (the Federation of British International Schools in Asia.). The games are organised at Primary, Under 13 and Under 15 age groups, with invitational events for the Over 15 category. Policies related to the games are determined by the Heads of the member schools, and are based on recommendations by the Heads of PE (HOPE) and HOPE executive committee. Aims To provide students with a variety of sporting opportunities at an appropriate level for all member schools in a safe, appropriate and competitive environment Objectives - To make the Games accessible to children from Year 5 upwards - To ensure equal opportunity and participation to both boys and girls - To ensure the Games provide a learning experience in sportsmanship and in the value of healthy competition. - To understand the the benefits of training in preparation for competition - To enable students to specialise in sports appropriate to their age group A. The Primary Games The primary members of FOBISIA are organised into four groups of six or seven schools. Each school is placed in a group with schools of a similar size or ability level to ensure fair competition. Each participating school selects a team of 20 boys and 20 girls to represent years 5 and 6, making up a total party size of 40 students. Dulwich College Shanghai is currently in Group A1 with Shrewsbury International School Bangkok, Bangkok Pattana School, Garden International School Kuala Lumpur, Alice Smith School Kuala Lumpur and Tanglin Trust School Singapore. The sports students will compete at are football, t-ball, swimming and athletics. The FOBISIA rules to be adhered to are: - Maximum squad allowed is 40. - Students will compete in their respective year groups. It is possible for students to play up to represent the year group above their own, but students may not play down a year group. DCS Selection Policy: - DCS allows any student to try out for the FOBISIA squads (Years 5 and 6) - DCS will select the strongest team available up to

a maximum of 40. - A trial will be held for athletics, swimming, football and t-ball, which will take place during PE lesson time and after school between January and February. The PE department will grade football and t-ball using the suggested national curriculum guidelines in accordance with the DCS PE assessment policy. - After careful analysis of all the results, the PE department will use its professional judgement to select the final 10 for each section. - Only successful names will be published (plus the name of 1 reserve per group). B. Under 13 and Under 15 games The senior members of FOBISIA are organised into four groups of 6 schools. Dulwich College Shanghai is currently in Group A1 with Shrewsbury International School Bangkok, Bangkok Patana School, Garden International School Kuala Lumpur, Alice Smith School Kuala Lumpur and Tanglin Trust School Singapore. The sports students will compete at are football, basketball, swimming and athletics. The FOBISIA rules are: - Maximum squad allowed 36 (18 boys and 18 girls) - Maximum team sizes 12 (basketball and football) - Students must fall within the eligibility age range. Age is taken on 1st August in the year of the competition. No primary student may compete in the U13 games - Students may, where necessary, compete in both the U13 and U15 games in the same year. This option should only be used by smaller sized schools to help in fielding a full team. DCS Selection Policy: - DCS allows any student to try out for the FOBISIA squads (Years 7 and 8 for U13 and Years 8 to 10 for U15). - Students must fall within the eligibility age maximum. A student in Year 10 for instance but year 11 age cannot compete. Equally no primary student may compete in the U13 games. - DCS will select the strongest team possible. This means it may not take the maximum 12 allowed for team sports if deemed not to benefit the overall squad. - DCS swimmers and athletes will come from the chosen team squad members unless exceptional prevail. - All students if selected for a team will play at FOBISIA. - All selected swimmers and athletes will participate in at least 1 event.

1. FOBISIA

DCS Selection Policy: - DCS allows any senior school student from Y10 to try out for the ACAMIS squads. - Students must fall within the eligibility age maximum. - DCS will select the strongest team possible. This means it may not select the maximum squad size allowed if deemed not to benefit the overall squad. - All students if selected for a team will play at ACAMIS.

2. ACAMIS

The Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS) sports competition is a senior sports tournament for middle and high school students. The following schools compete three times annually: Dulwich College Shanghai (DCS) Australian International School of Hong Kong (AISHK) International School Tianjin (IST) Suzhou Singapore International School (SSIS) International School of Beijing (ISB) Utahloy International School of Guangzhou (UISG) Aims - To provide a structured framework for competition between the small international schools in China and Mongolia Objectives - To ensure equal opportunity and participation to both boys and girls. - To enable students to specialise in sports appropriate to their age group. - To enable all schools to be able to host by having sufficient flexibility to organise a programme appropriate to their particular environment. The ACAMIS rules are: - A student is considered eligible if he/she is a full time student in the ACAMIS member school and is enrolled in Years 10-13. - Squads of maximum 10 for volleyball and basketball and 12 for football.

Shanghai (SISAC, CISSA, Shanghai Junior Netball and Rugby) DCS Selection Policy: - DCS allows any student to try out for the College squads. - Students must fall within the eligibility age maximum. - DCS will select the strongest team(s) possible for local tournaments. That means it may not select the maximum allowed for team sports if deemed not to benefit the overall squad. - All students if selected for a team will play in at least one game or a proportion of several games.

4. Beijing Rugby / Netball Invitational DCS Selection Policy: - DCS allows any student to try out for the College squads for this event.

6. SSL (Shanghai Swim League) DCS Selection Policy: - DCS allows any student to swim in galas within Shanghai provided they are attendees of the extra curricular swim clubs on offer at the school. - All selected swimmers will participate in at least 1 event.

DCS Selection Policy: - DCS allows any student to try out for team squads. When there are friendly games the coach will if possible rotate his squad to allow students a chance to play. - All students if selected for a match will play some proportion of the game.

- Students must fall within the eligibility age maximum. This may be different to the Shanghai League and thus movement between teams from the regular Shanghai League may occur. - DCS will select the strongest team possible. This means it may not select the maximum allowed for team sports if deemed not to benefit the overall squad. - All students if selected for a team will play in at least one game or a proportion of several games.

Travelling Team Code 1.I understand it is a privilege to represent the College as an athlete on and off the field and I agree to do so in the best manner possible. I will display good sportsmanship at all times and behave in an appropriate manner. 2.My academic work must come first. I will plan my time carefully. When I miss classes due to travel, I will make sure my teachers have been notified in advance and arrange to makeup work missed. 3. If any of my teachers feel that my academic performance will be harmed due to sports travel, they may recommend to the Director of Sport that I am not permitted to miss class. 4. I will attend all scheduled practices and games. I will make every effort to schedule appointments outside of scheduled practice times. If I must miss a scheduled practice or game, I will personally notify my coach in a timely manner. 5. I understand that alcohol consumption and the use of tobacco have an adverse affect on performance, and that drinking or smoking at the following times: - Whilst on away trips - Whilst representing DCS at any athletic event - Whilst visiting teams are in Shanghai & during my hosting responsibilities: will result in suspension from the team for the remainder of the season and that further violations will result in suspension from all teams for the academic year. 6. I understand that there are necessary requirements that include: - Housing visiting athletes during â&#x20AC;&#x153;host weekendsâ&#x20AC;? and tournaments (ACAMIS) - Assisting in the set up of equipment, scoring when required and clearing up 7. I agree to abide by any curfews that are set. I understand that the curfew will be no later than 10.00pm when teams are visiting DCS and when we are being hosted in ACAMIS tournaments, and I will respect any earlier curfew that hosting parents, including my own, may set. 8. I understand that violation of this code may lead to suspension or expulsion from the team. 9. I understand that if I do not return items of uniform not intended for me to keep, that I will be charged for their replacement. 10. I understand that the costs of non local sporting fixtures (usually involving flights or train travel and accommodation) will be borne by parents. By signing this form I am making myself available for selection to such travelling teams.

DCS is a member of the ACAMIS Orange group, which requires schools who host tournaments to house visiting students. This is a reciprocal arrangement, which is meant to keep to a minimum the costs of visiting other schools for games. Parents of DCS athletes will be requested to undertake hosting responsibilities when DCS hosts tournaments on its campus. Consequently visiting athletes will be housed and fed (breakfast and dinner) in the home of a host athlete. The Director of Sport will contact parents in advance of tournaments requesting they make themselves available to host visiting students. As this is a reciprocal arrangement it is expected that all parents of Senior School athletes undertake this in order for the system to work effectively. Billeting is a method of providing low cost accommodation for students involved in excursions and sporting trips hosted between Dulwich Colleges, ISCMS (International Schools Choral Music Society) and ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools) schools. We would like to assume that all of our families are going to offer a safe and secure environment for all billeted students. However, we cannot absolutely guarantee their suitability, as we are unable to acquire police record checks or have any assurance other than word of mouth or self-referral. We take the safety and wellbeing of all students very seriously and have formulated the following guidelines for staff and families to follow. - Billeting needs to be a planned activity in which the Headmasters of Schools, billeting coordinators, supervising teachers, the host parents and the parents of the visiting students are fully informed and implement arrangements that have been agreed upon by the Heads of Schools themselves. - Students should never be billeted alone. They should always be with at least one other student from then travelling team. - It is our expectation that no student will share a room with anyone other than a student with whom they are already acquainted and familiar (eg from same school/team). - Students should have contact home numbers of the members of staff in charge of the group. Staff members responsible for the group should have the mobile phone number and home number of the family who is billeting the student. - If the wellbeing or safety of a student is at risk, or there is suspicion that this could be so, the student will be relocated to another approved accommodation.

DCS Billeting Obligations (when hosting) Below are the rules that DCS follow for ACAMIS and DCA competitions, which are accepted practice for international schools. Hosting rules and guidelines are in effect from the time the visiting team leaves their school until they arrive home: 1. Exercise the supervision and care that you would normally exercise with your own children. 2. Under no condition are visiting athletes to be housed without adult supervision. 3. Athletes are not permitted to change housing arrangements. 4. The use of tobacco, drugs and the consumption of alcohol by students are strictly prohibited. Any violation should be reported to the Director of Sports immediately or the person in charge of the tournament. 5. Collect guests at the designated time. 6. Arrange for suitable transportation. Normally this is expected to be a private car to and from the sporting events. 7. Provide your guest(s) with an evening meal and breakfast. 8. Curfew hours cannot be extended and any violation should be reported immediately to the Director of Sports or the person in charge of the tournament. 9. Please discuss evening plans with your guests and ensure they are aware of all arrangements. Agree on pick up times and transportation and insist on the stated curfew hour. Staff of the students in your care will call each evening to ensure all is well and their students are home before curfew. 10. Ensure that guests know your name, telephone number and address.

Billeting

Kit, Information and Transportation Sports Kits for DCS Teams All players selected for College representative sides will receive a sports kit for each match. This will include a jersey and a pair of shorts (skort for netball). It is essential and expected that students return all kits to the College at the end of the season. Failure to do will result in full payment of kit replacement. Players for all events are required to purchase the following from the College shop: - DCS kit bag - DCS Panthers hooded top (Junior school maroon and Senior school blue) - DCS socks (for rugby and football squads) Travelling squads to ACAMIS and FOBISIA events will also need to wear: - DCS travel T-shirt (available for purchase at College shop) - DCS sports track trousers (available on loan from the PE/Sports department if and when the weather requires their use) Communication Tournament dates are available on the school calendar as well as the sports section of the school website. Training schedules are published in advance on sports notice boards, in the senior school bulletin and on the DCS website. http://dulwich-shanghai.cn All competitive teams require athletes to be aware of changes to schedules and to check on a regular basis that the information they have is up to date. Students require consent forms if they are to be considered for competitive teams. These forms will include the contact details of the student and are available from the PE/Sports department. Cancellation of Games/Practices Cancellations do regrettably occur and the College will endeavour to make cancellation decisions by 1.00pm for afternoon fixtures and will email parents. Rescheduled dates will be emailed to parents and published on the website as soon as they are made available and also on sports notice boards for students. Transportation Due to issues of safety and reliability and to encourage team spirit, DCS insists that all students travel to away venues on school supplied transport. Parents may wish to make alternative arrangements for the return journey but must consult with the coach prior to departure. Air Quality Our competitive sports teams are members of various sporting organisations and, at present, those organisations respond differently to Air Quality levels than at DCS. For competitive sports fixtures we will follow the guidelines laid down by the external organisation that oversees the competition.
