Information Book 2017-2018

Published on 21st August 2017

Dear Parents, Do you know what Winston Churchill, Angelina Jolie and Mark Zuckerberg have in common? Yes …FENCING! As one of the five sports which have featured in every modern Olympic Games, fencing’s unique charisma has attracted not only those big names listed above but also the 300 students from Dulwich (from DUCKS to Senior School) who have enrolled in our programme since its inception in April 2016. We are excited to share with you this Fencing Information booklet written specially for you, to provide an overview of fencing and our programme. Fencing requires so much - mentally, physically and emotionally. It is not a skill your child will acquire overnight and your patience and encouragement are very much appreciated along this journey. One thing is for sure: you will learn and grow together with your fencer child. Please take your time to read this information booklet. If you can’t find answers to your questions, I and my team are always willing to help. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Your sincerely,

Jing Shang Fencing Programme Manager

What is fencing? Quick Overview Fencing was one of the first sports to be played in the Olympics, and was conducted in three weapons – foil, sabre and epee (pronounced “EPP-pay”). It is also one of the five sports which have featured in every modern Olympic Games. Fencing is an excellent sport for both girls and boys. It requires physical fitness and agility, quick and strategic thinking, calm, unwavering concentration, stamina and a strong desire to win. The key elements in fencing are timing, distance and speed. Good behavior and sportsmanship are an integral part of the sport while courtesy and respect must be shown to opponents and to referees. It also can be a life-long sport. Fencing has a long history with universities and schools for at least 500 years. The United States holds two national level university tournaments including the NCAA championship and the USACFC National Championships. In the UK, the BUCS fencing championship is an annual event . Fencing is governed by Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE). Today, its head office is in Lausanne, Switzerland.

What is fencing? Why Fencing? We have received positive feedback from our community about the improved confidence, ability to concentrate and adapt, sense of responsibility and independence of our fencers. Fencers learn -

Responsibility: As a 1:1 combat sport, the fencer is responsible for everything. There is no one to blame and nowhere to hide. Isn’t this a great way to learn responsibility?

-

To maintain concentration: Everything happens within seconds on the strip. Without concentration, the child will be beaten if he is fencing a weaker fencer with full focus.

-

Resilience: for the first few years, most fencers experience many more losses than victories. Dealing with ‘failure’ and keeping going is another wonderful life lesson to learn from fencing.

-

Decision-making and quick adaptation: As in a game of chess, your opponent is changing all the time. You need to think a few steps forward and be ready to adapt to any unexpected situation.

And of course fencing is so much fun! We have a wonderful community which allows children not only to make friends and learn from each other but also parents to become an important part of the programme. So many unforgettable moments from camps, competitions and school fencing activities!

What is fencing?

Three Weapons – Foil, Epee and Sabre Foil: The foil is usually regarded as the foundation weapon. The weapon is lighter than Epee and Sabre. Its valid target area is strictly your opponent’s lame and the bib of the mask, and valid hits are scored with the tip of the weapon. Epee: The epee is the largest and heaviest of the three weapons. It has a v-cut, triangular blade and a heavier, bigger guard. Its grip is similar to foil’s. The epee’s valid target area is the entire body of your opponent, and valid hits are also scored with the tip of the weapon. Sabre: The sabre looks very different to foil and epee. In Sabre, the valid target is all parts of the body from the waist up (simulating horseback combat). Valid hits are scored both with the tip and by slashing with the edge of the weapon.

All weapons fenced today are scored electrically, and all are fenced on a rectangular field of play called the "fencing strip" or "piste" with standard size of 14 meters in length and 1.5 to 2.0 meters in width.

What is fencing?

Is it safe? A full study of the injuries from the 2008 Olympic Games by Lars Engebretron found that fencing is one of the safest Olympic sports with only five summer Olympic sports posting lower injury rates than fencing. (Those were diving, synchronized swimming, rowing, kayak, and sailing.) For details, please see appendix.

Dulwich Fencing Programme Launched in April 2016, the Dulwich Fencing Programme has grown far more than just CCA sessions. Dulwich Fencing ’s aim it to be the world’s best in-school fencing programme and focuses on developing Champions of Life through fencing and Champion Fencers. The programme provides different levels to engage students from Y2 to senior school, helping them to grow through fencing. Beginners learn fencing through CCA free with equipment provided by the school. At Development Level they train for 2-3 sessions per week; some fencers will proceed to Squad or School Team, which includes training between 2-4 times per week and taking small one-on-one lessons in addition to the larger classes. Senior school students have the choice of joining the service and leadership programme to learn fencing and give back in different ways. The fencers also have the opportunity to learn from world-class visiting coaches, to interact with elite senior fencers from all over the world, to join international camps hosted at school and overseas, engage in local, domestic or overseas club visits organized by Dulwich Fencing, as well as various fencing cultural activities and enter carefully-selected competitions both domestically and abroad. Right now, the programme offers foil and epee. There is year-based or term-based charge for non-beginners and the whole programme runs notfor-profit.

Dulwich Fencing Programme •

Programme Structure Each term covers 2-3 units depending on the levels. The group lessons cover mindfulness, fitness, technique and sparring.

Group lessons

Culture Activities

These different activities are integral to the programme to develop fencers’ social skills, self-esteem, and independent thinking.

Life Champion & Champion Fencer

Sparring Competitions Camps

Will be introduced when the fencer is ready for this 20minute intensive private lesson. Priority given to Team, Squad.

Private Lessons

These occasions are important to evaluate what the fencers have learned in group and private lessons and whether they can handle themselves in 15 real scenario under pressure.

All those four areas are foundations of the programme to follow our philosophy of “Life Champion & Champion Fencer”. Useful tools like fencing diary will be introduced to fencers as well. Fencing diaries are compulsory for Squad and Team fencers. We care for the overall development of fencers rather than focus solely technique or results.

Dulwich Fencing Programme

How to choose which weapon to start? Each weapon has its own distinct “character” . The sabre is full of speed and the most aggressive one while epee is the slowest and a game of patience. Foil is in between, a good balance of aggression and patience, and is considered the elegant weapon. Most children will be introduced to foil first and they always have opportunity to try epee as well. They will gradually understand the different nature of the weapons. A decision will be made by the child with consultation of coaches in a natural way rather than following a timetable.

Schedule & Fee structure For latest term schedule and fee, please refer to CCA SOCS System. Generally, up-front yearly payment must be made for Squad and Team fencers. Payment for development fencers can be settled termly or yearly. Beginner sessions are free. An up-front yearly payment is non-refundable. For all payments, please kindly keep the ‘fapiao’ from the finance department for the school year. Private lessons can be purchased at finance department by 10 or 20 sessions. Payment slip is required to show programme manager to validate the private lesson bookings.

16

How to enroll? CCA Dulwich Students Dulwich students will enroll through normal CCA procedures. You need to understand which level you are at then choose the CCA sessions accordingly. For Squad invitees and Team members, they are pre-selected in SOCS database . After the CCA signup closure, you will have 14 days to settle payment at the finance department. Non-Dulwich students Non-Dulwich fencers are invited on a selected basis to participate in the Dulwich Fencing programme. Please contact Programme Manager for more details. fencing@dulwich-shanghai.cn Maestro camps and competitions may be open to non-Dulwich fencers. Please refer to the specific registration requirements.

Private Lessons All private lessons must be booked through MINDBODY APP. For detailed instructions of how to book private lessons, please see instructions separately. Bookings will be validated by programme manager after payment is made.

17

Membership China Fencing Association Dulwich Fencing is a member of China Fencing Association (CFA) and all development and above fencers are required to be members of China Fencing Association affiliated to Dulwich Fencing. Parents will be given membership forms. Please fill in the membership form and return the signed copy as well as the soft copy to fencing@dulwichshanghai.cn So far, this membership is free. This membership allows you to join CFA’s National Club League. Overseas membership For those who would like to compete in USA North American Cup (NAC) and HK (U14 Open for example) as international fencers, you need to become members of those fencing federations. If you are citizens of USA or HK, membership is still a must to join the competitions there. For more details, please visit: https://member.usfencing.org http://www.hkfa.org.hk/EN/index.html Dulwich Fencing is an affiliate member of USFA and fencers should register Dulwich fencing as their affiliate member. To join some international competitions in Australia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Poland, Paris or London as an international fencer, usually you don’t need to become the member of that country or region’s fencing federation member. However, always check out the competition eligibility.

Care and Maintenance Weapon: Try not to touch your blade with your hands! Always wipe down your blade with a clean towel or rag (or even better, an oiled one) after you’re finished fencing. Do not store your weapons in a bag full of sweaty clothes. Clothes: Air-dry your entire uniform after every practice, and wash it regularly. In other words, never leave your uniform in your bag after use. This is the best way to prevent mould and mildew (which can weaken natural fabrics) as well as odors. Do not put your uniform in the dryer. Try not to bleach your uniform. Lamés: Air-dry. Must be hung asap after practice. Can’t wash unless it is a washable one! Gloves and Masks: Air-dry for starters. May use a hairdryer to dry fast. If it is 19 washable glove, please follow the instructions.

Equipment Key Points Beginners do not need to buy any equipment. All provided by the programme. Development and above need to prepare their own equipment. Parents can either buy from the school supplier or from other sources. However, please note that: -

-

all fencers must use school fencing bags bearing programme logo and programme patch must be sewed to the upper part of left sleeve of the fencing jacket; all development and above fencers are required to have at least 2 working weapons and 2 sets of cords which is also the min requirement to join any competition. if your child is left-handed, his or her equipment is significantly different from right-handed equipment. If you would like to buy imported equipment which is much more expensive than local manufactured ones, the best way to buy is to buy when you are overseas to avoid very high customs in China. We do have cooperation with the authorized ALLSTART supplier in China. Due to the fact of different sizes of blades introduced to young fencers in U10/U12 category around the world, we highlight some of these in case you are thinking of joining competitions in these countries or regions. Always check the equipment requirement before entering competitions.

Competitions Every school year, we will organize various competitions to suit different levels. We usually publish the term’s competition plan at the beginning of each term, but due to the fact that some competitions are announced weeks earlier than the competition dates, we will update from time to time. Your child’s coach is the best reference to consult as to whether your child is ‘ready’ to compete. The general approach is they will start with internal competitions to get familiar with the basic competition format, and then local or regional competitions and finally to national or overseas competitions. Development and Squad fencers usually compete in their own age group; Team fencers will take on the challenge of joining an older group. In the next section, we will introduce our ranking points system. Every recognized competition has an index to show different levels of difficulty. Usually, Development level fencers are suitable for those competitions with index of 1; Squad members can try an index of 1-1.5. For team fencing, the team will be formed based on our ranking system and the coach has the final say about the sequence of the team considering the individual results in the competition etc. A normal competition starts with pools, where every 6-7 fencers will be grouped depending on the scale of the competition. In each pool, they fence each other for 5 points within 3 mintues. After pools, there will be a ranking based on how many bouts they win, net points scored. Then a direct elimination (DE) tableau will be produced. For example, in a tableau of 64, No.1 fences No.64; No.2 fences No.63……Then Tableau of 32,16, 8,semi-final, final. In DE bouts, usually U10 and U12 fence for 10 points within 3 bouts of 3 minutes with 1- minute break in between. If a fencer defeated in DE bout, his journey in the competition finishes, otherwise he proceeds to next round of DE.

THERE IS A STRICTLY NO SCREEN POLICY ON COMPETITION DAY AND DURING GROUP COMPETITION TRAVELLING

Usually, parents are responsible for your child’s safety throughout the competition apart from their time on strip. So for every competition, every child must be accompanied by an adult.

24

Competitions Strip Coaching Coaches will not be at every competition. If there is a coach at the venue, please be aware that he may have a number of fencers to look after. It is impossible to be completely ‘fair’ due to the fact that fencers in the same category will fence at the same time or different categories may fence at the same time. The coach decides how to allocate his time based on the following guide lines: Priority is given to Team and Squad; DE bouts prevail over pools Fencers who have a possibility of winning could be given extra attention A fencer in great need of support may receive attention even he is not Squad or Team fencer If the coach can’t spend time strip coaching a fencer, he will make an effort to talk to the fencer before or after competition If two Dulwich fencers are fencing each other in DE bouts, no strip coaching will be given Other necessary factors will also be considered

Ranking Points System The ranking point system is designed to show fencers’ effort and progress; it also allows coaches easily to form a team based on point standings in team fencing. During the school year of 2017-2018, this system is introduced for trial and we will review after two terms. The points system season will be the same as school year. At the end of the school year, 20% of the existing points will be carried on to next season. There are eight categories in the system, i.e. U10/12/14/14+ in Foil and Epee. Points will be updated monthly and posted in the wechat group and on the information board at sports center. Results

Fencers earn points in individual events from every recognized external competitions and some internal ones . They do not earn points in team events. The points they earn depends on the result and the index of the competition. For example, a fencer achieved Top 64 in CFA Club League, the index of Club League is 2, so by joining this competition, he earns 2x2=4 points. At this stage, we will record all the points they earn during the season rather than taking best four results.

26

Communications Parents are strongly suggested to join fencing parents’ wechat group. All important notices, camp information, competition information, private lesson update etc will be posted in wechat group and by email. The Programme Manager is the first contact for parents’ communication. Any feedback, suggestions or complaints can be made by wechat privately or emailed to fencing@dulwich-shanghai.cn If parents are not satisfied with the feedback from Programme Manager, further assistance can be obtained from Mr. Jamie Gerrard, director of sports at jamie.gerrard@dulwich-shanghai.cn For external fencing community communications, the Programme Manager is also the first contact representing the programme.
