DUMBLETON CRICKET CLUB
Lord’s Final 2022
Dumbleton Cricket Club
Welcome to our fixture card for 2023 and the prospect of another busy and happy year in the life of the club and the village.
Back in the dark days of World War 2, when American Forces were renting the cricket ground on which to play baseball, for 11 shillings per year (55 pence), village boys and girls would never have imagined that in their more mature years so many people would still be able to enjoy the facilities which have been continuously improved by succeeding generations.
As custodians of one of the most remarkable cricket grounds in England, we continue to improve the immediate area. We have just completed the enhancement of the groundsman’s shed to tidy up the vicinity and to match the timber cladding on the pavilion. This improvement, together with the stunning new balcony over the lake, will make for a beautiful setting for local residents, visitors, players and anyone who wishes to use the facility.
Again this year we are continuing to provide a sporting structure for young people to enjoy a summer sport in a family atmosphere whilst learning the values of team camaraderie and respect, at the same time as being taught skills by qualified coaches. The club’s concentration on youth teams for boys and girls over many years has led to a great deal of success.
In 2022 the men’s team won the Voneous Village Cup at
Lord’s cricket ground, the home of cricket worldwide, a dream venue for every cricketer. No less than 340 village clubs, with a population of less than 10,000, entered the competition but Dumbleton won matches against villages from Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Merseyside, all but one match being played away from home, before playing the final at Lord’s.
We are also very pleased the participation of women’s teams in the club has contributed so much. The team has enjoyed a very successful season and has now been invited to participate in the inaugural West of England Premier League which will involve playing against teams from Bristol, Bath, Taunton, Bridgewater and Devizes. We all wish them every success.
Our junior boys and girls teams continue to thrive and this season there is huge support for the Dynamos and All Stars (610 year old age groups). There should also be a special mention for Tommy Boorman, who was selected for the England Under 19 X1, Danielle Gibson, who travelled to South Africa with the England Women’s T20 squad and Katie Jones to Gloucestershire Women and Western Storm cricket. Additionally several cricketers have spent the winter months overseas playing cricket in different conditions.
The season ahead will include, in addition to an England v Wales over 60’s match, our annual cricket festival week, a highly unusual event to be staged by a village club. This year’s fixtures will include the Andrew Powell Memorial match, games against the MCC, Gloucestershire Gipsies and teams from Essex, Wales and Gloucestershire. They will culminate with a fixture against Worcestershire CCC. During the week Gareth Chilcott,
the England rugby player, will also be speaking at a gala dinner. Throughout the festival, lunches, teas and suppers will be available each day in the marquee for everyone who wishes to come along to enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional English summer sport.
Now in it’s 52nd year, the August Bank Holiday fete will aim to provide a very traditional feel for young and old to socialise and enjoy a fun day at a beautiful local venue away from the busy roads and traffic.
The Cricket Club would also like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed, in any way whatsoever, to helping the club on its journey since 1885. Many previous generations of local people have given their support over the years and we are so grateful that today the passion remains to continue their efforts. Your on-going support is really appreciated.
VP. March 2023.MESSAGE FROM THE SPONSOR
My wife and I moved to Dumbleton in December 2019 and it immediately felt like home. The village community is fantastic with an amazing group of residents giving their time and energy, organising events centred around the Cricket Club, Village Club and Village Hall.
My day job is as director and co-owner of land and property agency, Sheldon Bosley Knight. I am honoured therefore, for Sheldon Bosley Knight to sponsor Dumbleton Cricket Club and join the committee charged with running it. Sheldon Bosley Knight was founded in 1843 and much like Dumbleton Cricket Club we see ourselves as custodians of that business in order to leave it in a better position for future generations. The team’s recent successes at Lords are due in no small part to the army of volunteers involved in the day-to-day running of the club – the tea ladies, ground staff and junior coaches. It is an enormous privilege to be involved in a club with such a proud heritage and wish it all the best for the forthcoming season. For those who don’t know us, Sheldon Bosley Knight is a local firm of land and property professionals involved in the sale and letting of properties. We also have a suite of professional services including planning, architecture, rural estate management and auctions.
If you think we can help, please contact me or any of the team at your local office, or even better come and find us on a Saturday afternoon in the clubhouse – we are the ones with the spotty dog and red headed toddler!

Did you know
> A Dumbleton team first played in 1882 but the first home match was not recorded until 1885 and played on the existing ground which was originally a fenced off area in which Lady Monsell as a child kept her deer.
> Continuity has been maintained because of the support of the Eyres-Monsell and Hambro families to this day.
> Since those early days, matches have been played against teams from Beckford, Sedgeberrow, Hinton-on-the-Green, Buckland, Toddington, Gretton, Alderton and Hampton, all of whom have folded due to lack of support. Stanton still has a ground which is maintained and occupied by St. Philips North Cricket Club from Cheltenham. Many other clubs across England are currently struggling to survive.
> A Cricket Week was held each season until 1935 but discontinued until 1985 when it resumed each year until the present day. A village cricket club staging a cricket festival week is very unusual and it hosts a team from the MCC every other year.
> In its centenary year, 1985, the club organised a sponsored cycle ride which raised £1,400 for the cobalt unit in Cheltenham. Subsequently donations of £4500 and £2100 to Winston’s Wish, [a bereaved children’s charity],
£1,580 to Help the Heroes, many different amounts to the Air Ambulance and other organisations in the village have been distributed culminating in December 2021 when £1,000 was given to the village Club, £500 to the Air Ambulance and amounts of £250 each to the School the Village hall and the Church.
> Socially the club welcomes the use of the pavilion for Village groups and private parties by arrangement. The club’s other functions are always well supported by members and local people and the annual Bank Holiday Fete now in its 51st year is run by club members but any organisation can participate for their own benefit. The ground is always available for special events and since 1902 has hosted most coronations and jubilees.
> The ground and Fishpond were purchased by the club in 1997 and are run by an annually elected committee of 15 members. The Trustees were born in the village and almost all current officers of the club reside or were born in the parish.
> Finally the club is unique amongst local cricket clubs as it has almost 30 life members and vice presidents who have earned their position and who have exceptionally strong ties to the village. Almost all are village lads who have spent a lifetime playing and supporting the club and the village but sadly many of them cannot afford the cost of housing in the parish.
> Cumulatively this group has donated about 1,500 years of support to one of England’s most remarkable village cricket clubs.
