Duncan & Grove is a playground equipment design and manufacture company with over 15 years experience building award-winning playgrounds. We manufacture a range of high-quality natural play equipment as well as building large bespoke playgrounds. Our products are hand crafted in the UK, out of hardwood that doesn’t require chemical treatment so they are durable and kind to the environment.
We have over 200 products in our catalogue range. We make all of our own equipment so we can adapt our existing catalogue products to suit your needs or we can design and build something entirely new. Flexibility and adaptability are at the heart of our business, our objective is to design what you want and build it in a way that will last. Our catalogue is based around natural playground equipment and is separated into two different ranges; hardwood playground equipment and robinia playground equipment.

We are market leaders in the design and build of bespoke play equipment having built numerous awardwinning playgrounds. We can assist with the design process from initial concept design through to detailed construction drawings, advice on adding play value, feedback on compliance with play safety standards, engineering support and communication with external play safety consultants.
Our in-house design team have many years of exerience designing innovative play structures and they have a great understanding of the play safety standards. We are conversant with most CAD software and can provide you with detailed drawings and advise on ASTM and EN 1176 compliance. We are more than happy to either create a design for you or look at the designs you have created and provide our expert feedback.
IN-HOUSE MANUFACTURING
All of our products are manufactured in-house in our workshop, by our team of highly skilled craftsmen.
Our fabrication team has years of experience working with different materials and techniques, enabling them to craft complex bespoke play equipment of the highest standards.
We take great pride in our well-equipped workshops for both timber and steel fabrication. We understand the importance of having the right tools and equipment to deliver quality products to our clients. Our steel manufacturing workshop is fitted with state-of-the-art machinery and tools that allow us to work with various grades of steel, ensuring precise cutting, bending, and welding. Our carpentry workshop boasts a wide array of hand and power tools, enabling us to craft beautiful, bespoke pieces of play equipment. Whether it’s metal or wood, our skilled artisans have everything they need to deliver excellent results.
Our fabrication team work closely with our design team to ensure that all our equipment is built to the exact specifications outlined in the design process. Our design team takes great care to create detailed plans and drawings that provide our manufacturing team with all the information they need to build each piece of equipment accurately.
Manufacturing all of our play equipment in the in-house gives us complete control over our production line and lead in times, while maintaining our commitment to quality. We can oversee every aspect of the manufacturing process, from sourcing the best materials to assembling the finished products. It also give us the ability to quickly adapt and customise our products to meet the needs of our customers.

MATERIALS
At Duncan & Grove, we understand that the quality of the materials we use is critical to the durability and longevity of our play equipment. That’s why we only use the highest quality materials in all of our products. We carefully select materials that are not only sustainable, but also robust and able to withstand heavy use and exposure to the elements.
Hardwood Timber
We only use naturally durable hardwood such as robinia, bilinga, tatajuba, ekki, cumaru and greenheart. which is either reclaimed or from FSC certified sawmills. These species are physically hard and inherently longlasting.
Ropes & Nets
Our nets are made using high-quality six strand wire reinforced polypropylene rope, aluminium ferrules and stainless steel chain connections. We manufacture all of our nets in house. This allows us to adapt our designs quickly and easily, take accurate measurements before the net is made, and easily alter the net if required. We have mobile site presses so we can attend site at short notice to conduct any maintenance required ensuring your playground is fit for purpose and remains in use.
Steel Components
Our steel components are manufactured in-house from high quality stainless steel and are available in either a brushed or polished finish.
By using these materials, we can confidently offer products that look great and are built to last, providing children with many years of fun and adventure.

MAINTENANCE
Our commitment to quality extends beyond just the materials we use; it also applies to the maintenance and care of our equipment. We design our products with ease of maintenance in mind, ensuring that they are easy to clean, repair and maintain, which helps to prolong their lifespan.
Because we manufacture our own equipment in the United Kingdom, using local suppliers for our raw materials, we are able to quickly respond to any maintenance issues. Our dedicated maintenance teams can attend site within a fews days notice to carry out any remedial works required.
We also provide detailed maintenance guides for all of our equipment. Because our equipment is made from durable hardwood and built for the outdoor environment it requires very little maintenance.

LDA Design
In collaboration with LDA Design we designed the Prospect Park playground as part of the Battersea Power Station redevelopment for the local residents and general public.
The design is inspired by the power stations iconic chimneys and brickwork patterns. The colourful landscape features five cone shaped towers made from Billinga hardwood with two spiral tube slides and connecting net bridges. The bespoke play area is supported by stand alone play elements such as a spinning disk and basket swing.

LDA Design
In collaboration with LDA Design we designed and built this striking play space in Burgess Park, Southwark. The design aimed to introduce ‘natural play’ as part of the wider play offer within the park, make a strong visual impact and inspire and excite children to play, explore and undertake physical activity.
The design consists of a mix of geometrical shaped structures and more natural free flowing timber pieces. The geometrical play structures are based around a series of dodecahedrons that are linked with bridges, balance ropes, net tunnels, balance beams, stepping poles, slides, fireman’s poles, climbing walls, and climbing nets. The natural play elements are made from natural robinia poles and consist of swings and a long winding climbing net trail.

Chobham Farm is a residential development in Stratford, London
The concept for this piece of bespoke playground equipment was designed by Churchman Thornhill Finch architects. Duncan & Grove were appointed as the specialist design and build playground contractors. We created a detailed 3D model of the structure, appointed a structural engineer and liaised with the play inspector to ensure it was complaint.
A central steel column with a series of spokes supports a number of curved glulam beams, a stainless steel tube slide and a series of nets and climbing ropes. The glulam beams are supported on steel shoes to lift them out of ground contact and improve the longevity of the playground equipment. The cladding and climbing holds are made from robinia.

Erect Architecture
Claremont Park was designed in collaboration with Erect Architecture, with the natural play equipment inspired by the leaf forms of the trees within the area.
The playground promotes a range of different play types for all abilities. A sculpted concrete water and sand play area consisting of troughs and sluice gates encourages children to be creative and improve motor skills. There is also a play hut and musical chimes for imaginative play, and large climbing frames for the more challenging and risky play opportunities.
The bespoke flotsam towers are linked together with bridges and nets, and feature sloping platforms, rope matrixes, and a 4m spiral tube slide to create an active and adventurous environment.
Special consideration was required in planning and installation due to some of the play equipment being positioned in root protection areas. Other play equipment from our catalogue were selected by Erect including; swings, springers, a standing seesaw, wide slides, and log scrambles and steps on paths to provide enjoyment throughout the playspace.

Great Shelford Playscape was a charity set up with the vision of transforming the existing village recreation ground, into an inclusive playscape. The result is an inspiring playable landscape that does not segregate by age or ability. The completed play space benefits the whole community and will provide a wonderful legacy for future generations
The concept was designed by Erect Architecture. Duncan & Grove were appointed as the specialist design and build playground contractors.
The playscape features a central bespoke climbing frame, set upon rolling hills and mounds. Inclusive elements to the playscape include an accessible sand pit, trampoline, hammock, roundabout and doublewidth slide, alongside sensory elements.
HEVER CASTLE

Hever Castle & Gardens

Hever Castle is the Grade 1 listed childhood home of Anne Boleyn located in Hever, Kent.
Duncan & Grove design and built this large bespoke playground. We produced a detailed 3D model, appointed an engineer, building consultant, play inspector and archaeologist to ensure the castle was structurally sound, complied with building regulations, was play safe, and the foundation works were conduct in a manner that protected any potential historical artifacts.
The traditional oak frame was manufactured in bays in our workshop and then erected on site. Oak floors, wall panels, stainless steel slides, tunnels, musical instruments, fabric panels, fireman’s poles, and a series of nets and tunnels were then installed.
In the dell we installed a mix of proprietary Duncan & Grove playground equipment and larger bespoke pieces. The timber was a mix of oak and robinia with stainless steel fixings. A large stainless steel tube slide was installed along with polypropylene ropes and nets.

Erect Architecture
Holland Park is the largest park in Kensington and Chelsea with large areas of woodland abundant with wildlife.
Erect Architecture designed two bespoke play structures for the site, the Hillcoaster which snakes around existing trees and the Fishermen’s Tower located at the start of the play valley pond providing a vantage point over the site. Erect provided conceptual designs, initial construction drawings, and a series of connection details engineered by Entuitive Engineers. From these Duncan & Grove created a 3D model and detailed construction drawings.
The Fishing Tower was manufactured in our workshop from oak and robinia and was lifted into place using a HIAB and a crane. The Hillcoaster was built on site from robinia. The structure was then inspected by an independent play inspector to ensure it was EN 1176 compliant.
IRMA COULSON PUBLIC SCHOOL

Halton District School Board
The Irma Coulson Public school playground was designed as part of an initiative led by Evergreen and the Halton District School Board to transform the entire school ground into an outdoor learning hub.
A variety of consultation methods including stakeholder meetings, site walks and workshops were conducted to engage with students, the community and the administration to inform the design process.
A selection of natural play equipment was chosen to provide an active and challenging space for students to play.
The playground is a great example of how school grounds can be used as a space for anyone to gather, relax, play and learn beyond school hours, and provide a sense of place that reflects the school community, building pride and ownership in public space through participation and stewardship.
KEW GARDENS

Ground Control
The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew are one of the most extensive and important botanical gardens in the world, housing the one of the largest and most diverse botanical and mycological collections around the globe.
Duncan & Grove collaborated with Kew Gardens and Ground Control to design and build a series of unique Children’s Gardens at Kew. The play areas are based in a natural setting the size of 40 tennis courts. They provide a dedicated space for fun, exploring, play and learning and they are one of the most ambitious projects in the Botanic Gardens in the last decade. The theme of the gardens was nature and we designed four separate zones themed around earth, air, sun and water – all the things plants need to grow.
Duncan & Grove installed a huge range of equipment including large Robinia climbing frames, various trim trail elements, play huts, sand and water play features, and even a 4-meter high canopy walkway that wraps around a 200-year-old oak tree. The site contains over 100 mature trees, so special care was required in the setting out and installation of all play items. The play areas were an incredible success, earning two BALI awards, and increasing visitor numbers from 1.5M to 2M annually.

The school wanted a high-quality natural playground that was designed to offer maximum play utility within a tight enclosed space.
The first play area has been designed for older children and installed on a podium slab. The design is based around natural robinia poles with the structure butted up against the building wall to maximise the use of space.
The second play area is designed for younger children and uses a mix of robinia and sawn hardwood. The hardwood climbing frame was built using traditional mortise and tenon joints. The combination of steel shoes and durable hardwood provides a robust and low maintenance playground with a life expectancy of 30 years.

Duncan & Grove worked on the refurbishment of Pirelli Park, a playground in the centre of Eastleigh.
The circular park is located in a residential area sited on the grounds of the former Pirelli Cable Factory.
The design of the new park is based on the concept of Pirelli Cable Works, which previously occupied the site. It interprets the shapes of the cable drums, and was designed in collaboration with architects John Puttick Associates following a several community engagement days.

Woodhouse Urban Park is a park built on the site of a demolished set of flats located in South Kilburn, London.
Erect Architecture designed a series of playground equipment structures. They provided conceptual designs, initial construction drawings, and a series of connection details engineered by Entuitive Engineers. From these Duncan & Grove created a 3D model and detailed construction drawings.
The ‘Beanpole’ play structure is designed for younger and less able children, with a clatter bridge, log traverse, and slide.
Placed up on a mound, the ‘Giant Tree’ on the southern boundary of the park is a challenging play structure. The structure was manufactured on site and consisted of a machined round oak subframe held together with a series of steel fin plates, a secondary sawn oak subframe to support the stainless steel nets, slide, fireman’s pole, and thermo treated oak balustrades. The structure was then inspected by an independent play inspector to ensure it was EN 1176 compliant.
