Local TD Peter Fitzpatrick says he is confident that the brand new Municipal Athletics Track will be ready to open by February or March next year with phase two of the project beginning this week.

Work on the new Municipal Athletics Track resumed with phase two beginning this week as contractors returned to the site at the old Pitch and Putt course in Muirhevnamor. Phase 1 was completed earlier this year which involved levelling the ground in preparation for phase two.

Questions had been asked locally as to what was going on given the lack of activity over the last number of months but this week saw phase two resume which will see grass seeds being put down as well as a new fence being installed the whole way around what will be the new track.

The new track is being built on the former Pitch and Putt Course in Muirhevnamor (Muirhevnamor District Park) and the ambitious project will initially see the development of a grass track and a general training area which will be used by local athletics clubs as well as the general community.

New athletics track will be ready to open early next year From Page 1 Six athletics clubs (St Peters A.C, Mountpleasant A.C, Blackrock A.C, St Gerards A.C, Dún Dealgan A.C and the North-East Runners) formed together to create a LTD company under the name of Dundalk Athletics Asso-

ciation and they alongside DKIT and Louth County Council they are the driving force to ensure this project gets completed. The project is expected to cost in the region of €1.6m.

Funding of €92,500 from the Sports Capital Grant was secured to-

wards the installation of the track and that money was used during phase 1 of the project.

The facility will be managed by Louth County Council and subject to further funding it will later include an artificial surface running track which can be used to host national and international events.

According to local TD Peter Fitzpatrick the new track will be ready to open early next year

“I’m delighted to see work resume on the athletics track this week and I was down there myself on Monday afternoon with the council engineer and the place is looking fantastic,” stated Peter.

“This is a very important project for the town and we’ve been working very closely with Louth Peter Fitzpatrick at County Council to make the site of the track. sure that we keep this with February a very moving. The ground was levelled earlier this year realistic target.

and having given it time to settle the contractors are back this week to put grass seeds down and to build a fence around the field. They are also going to put down new footpaths.

“We have some fantastic athletes here in town and the surrounding areas and they deserve a track to train in and call their own.

Dundalk is a town well known for producing sports stars and any

night you go out for a walk you see so many people out walking or running and they will all be able to use this track when it is completed early next year.

“All the money spent so far has come from government funding and Louth County Council and great credit has to go to the local authority for providing the site and investment towards this project. We are in the finishing straight

now and this track will be a fantastic addition to our town when completed,” stated Deputy Fitzpatrick.

The news regarding the resumption of work on the athletics track comes at a time when the sport is booming in Dundalk with the trio of Kate O’Connor, Patience Jumbo Gula and Israel Olatende all excelling on the international stage in recent years.

Jenkinstown native Eve McCrystal alongside her tandem partner Katie George Dunlevy struck gold once again for Ireland early yesterday morning as they retained the Paralympic Time Trial title they won back in 2016 in Rio. The pair who won silver in the 3000m individual pursuit on Saturday went one better in their favoured road event covering the 32km course in 47:32, exactly one minute up on Great Britain’s silver medal winners Lora Fachie and Corrine Hall.

The duo cycling in their final Paralympics together are among the most decorated athletes Ireland have ever produced in these games and they will be looking to add yet another medal to their collection when they complete their Paralympic career in Friday’s road race which they also won in Rio five years ago.

Dunlevy was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa aged 11. Her vision impairment led to her becoming a paracycling competitor

and, after declaring for Ireland, she has teamed up with her tandem pilot Eve with great success.

McCrystal, an elite cyclist in her own right (she is the current national TT champion) said she was delighted with the performance and the reward it had brought while also acknowledging the sacrifices both she and Katie had made along the way.

“We just went for it and I think we settled a bit after the first lap when we heard we were five seconds ahead of the field. I think we’re better ahead than when we are chasing so that gave us confidence,” explained Eve. “I think we had the ride of our lives out there and we are just delighted to have won gold. We’ll go home and relax now and I’ll give my girls a ring and ask them how school went today and tell them Mammy won gold. We have the road race coming up on Friday so we will spend the next few days preparing for that,” added Eve.

Local INTO rep supports review on mask wearing for school kids Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) Louth representative Adrian Kelly has said he supports a call for a review of face masks for primary school children.

He made the comment after INTO general secretary John Boyle said it is time for a review of face masks for primary school children.

“I don’t see why not.

We should constantly be looking at things and revising and updating with best practice,” said Adrian.

“There is a certain level of anxiety amongst teachers going back to school, certainly amongst the unvaccinated pregnant teachers for sure.

“I can only speak for my own school

but there hasn’t been much mask wearing amongst pupils.”

He added: “The pupils have to wear them on buses and public transport but not in school. The jury is out on whether or not there should be mask wearing in primary schools.

“I’d follow whatever is considered best practice and follow the public health advice.

But there is a cohort of children in special classes where mandatory mask wearing might not work.

“There would have to be some exceptions if it is introduced. It’s tough enough for kids and it’s hard for them to pick up on the visual signs of teaching because teachers are wearing masks.”

“Our little ones under the age of 12 are not vaccinated so I’m all for mask wearing.

I think it’s useful in protecting kids,” said Daniel.

“Our two have been wearing the mask in school and out and about. With the virus that’s there now, it’s in my opinion, important that kids who are not vaccinated wear masks.

“Remember our little kids are not immune to this and can get it and it could affect their long-term health. We want to protect that. I am all for mask wearing with kids.”

Second Scott medal for brave Darren Inspector Darren Kirwan, based at Dundalk Garda station received his second Scott medal recently in recognition of his bravery.

Darren, originally from Ballivor in Co. Meath, has been stationed in Dundalk since 1996 and has played intercounty football for Louth as well as captaining Lordship outfit St Patricks to Senior Championship success.

His first Scott medal was awarded to him in 2005 in recognition of his bravery for his part in rescuing a man from the freezing Castletown river.

Darren and his colleague Ger Collins jumped into the river in the early hours of the morning to rescue the man in January 2002.

On Wednesday, Darren was awarded a second bronze Scott Medal for arresting an armed burglar in Omeath in January 2011. The then

Detective Sergeant Kirwan and his colleague Detective Andrew Barron were pursuing a suspect car with false number plates which failed to stop when signalled.

Their patrol car was repeatedly rammed before Detective Sergeant Kirwan jumped out.

As the driver of the car

reached for a gun Detective Kirwan broke the drivers window with his torch which caused a cut on his arm.

The passenger in the suspect car then exited the car but was caught

by Kirwan who tackled and arrested him despite the injury to his arm.

The Scott Medal is

the highest award that can be bestowed by the Garda Commissioner and is awarded for “most exceptional bravery and heroism involving the risk of life in the execution of duty.” Darren was on hand to collect his second Scott medal with his family in Dublin Castle on Wednesday.

An Slí to take part in sponsored 30k wheelchair walk RESIDENTS and staff members of St John of Gods are planning to do a sponsored 30k wheelchair walk. The wheelchair walk is due to take place on Saturday, September 11.

Eight residents and staff members will depart from Carlingford at 9am and aim to arrive back to a community house called ‘An Slí’ in Toberona, Dundalk by 4pm.

According to a St John of God’s staff member, this is the first time as a group that they have taken on a sponsored walk of this size.

“Eight residents live in An Slí. They all will take part in the walk at some stage throughout the day. Different staff members are also joining in on the day,” she said.

“Family members of the residents are joining us for the last hurdle to bring all eight residents over the finish line together as a family.”

She added: “It’s hoped that the money raised will go towards the purchase of a new wheelchair vehicle. There are sponsorship cards available.

“It’s going to be a great day. The residents are all looking forward to it. Like everyone, COVID has had an impact on them all and they are really looking forward to having something to celebrate. I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has participated in helping make the day possible by donating and sponsoring us. It is very much appreciated by both residents and staff.”

Paddy to release single to pay for parents’ headstone He’s been singing his heart out on the streets of Dundalk and Blackrock for many years now but Paddy McDowell aka Jesus Jones has been in the recording studio in recent weeks and will release his first ever single as well as a video to accompany the song later this month.

Paddy, from Marian Park, is releasing the song to raise money to buy a headstone for the grave of his parents Charles & Norah who passed away in 2000 and 2001 respectively.

His distinctive voice and sense of fashion has made him one of the most recognisable faces around Dundalk and he will now put that voice to good use thanks to the support of local design artist John Jack Riot from TUT Design.

play a live event later this month in Dundalk to help support the release of the new single.

As well as paying for

the headstone, Paddy is also hoping to raise money for local children in need through the Jack and Jill foun-

dation which provide in-home nursing care and respite support for children up to the age of 6, with a range of neurodevelopmental issues including brain injury, genetic diagnosis and severe cerebral palsy. Paddy is hoping to raise €2000 for the Jack and Jill foundation which could help give home care for up to five children locally.

The chance to record his own single came about thanks to local artist John Jack Riot who owns TUT Design which specialises in art and clothing. According to John Jack he was inspired by Paddy’s unique style when creating a line of jumpers last Christmas and having sold quite a few he decided to try and repay the inspiration of his work.

“Myself and a few others at TUT Design are raising funds for a headstone for Paddy McDowell’s (Jesus Jones) parent’s grave.

Charles & Norah passed

away on August 27th, 2000 & September 10th, 2001 and Paddy has been unable to afford a headstone since.

Initially the fundraiser was just for Paddy but he insisted on raising money for local children in need. We hope to match and exceed Paddy’s target (€2000) for five children in home care based in County Louth through the amazing Jack & Jill foundation. Any potential surplus goes to the Jack & Jill foundation and the families of the five children.

“Paddy’s obviously very well known around the town and he just makes people happy when they see him on the streets singing his heart out. I’ve always been fascinated by him and I love the way he dresses with the big crucifixes and bandanas and he was kind of the inspiration for some of the clothes I produced last year. I got talking to him a while ago and

he mentioned to me about his desire to get a headstone for his parents grave and I threw out the idea of maybe recording a song to be released to try and raise money for it.

“We went through a load of songs he likes and the idea was to have him record it while I try and put a bit of a modern twist on whatever he chose.

We picked something that we thought might work and we recorded it in An Táin Arts Centre but in between takes he started singing this other song and it just hit me straight away that this was the perfect song,” explained John Jack.

“So we scrapped the original idea and went with the second one and it has turned out brilliantly! I can’t say what song he has covered just yet but we will be releasing teasers and videos over the next few weeks before we release it at the end of September. I have

got to know Paddy really well over the last few months and even though he lives by himself he is such a sociable guy and he has a brilliant sense of humour. He’s delighted with the recording and we’re hoping that when it is released people can get behind him and help him get that headstone as well as raising some money for the Jack and Jill foundation,” stated John Jack.

All funds from the song go towards the target. It’s hard to stop Paddy from singing so there will be plenty of videos and teasers in between. The clothing and art pieces by TUT Design are inspired by Paddy go on sale soon and 15% of the profits also go towards the target.

Cllr Edel Corrigan’s clean-up in Oakland Park Sinn Féin Councillor Edel Corrigan spent a very wet Saturday the weekend before last doing a clean-up of Oakland Park in Dundalk.

Speaking after the clean-up, a soaked Cllr Corrigan said “I want to thank the local Sinn Féin Cumann and local residents who gave up their time today along with our TD Ruairí Ó Murchú. We collected up to two dozen bags of rubbish along with wood, buggies, household rubble, toys, trolleys and much more. We also brushed and scraped the area

leaving it looking a lot more presentable for local residents to enjoy.

“I like taking part in community clean-ups and would encourage others to do them in their own areas because not only do they improve the appearance of the area, it also instils pride in the community and brings people closer together and the craic is good. The Council will provide bags etc so if any groups want to organise a clean-up for their own area then please contact me.”

Only a fifth of people involved in sports clubs are confident using a defibrillator

ONLY a fifth of those involved in sports clubs are confident using defibrillators, a study called Assessment of Layperson Knowledge of AED use in Sports Clubs has found.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, and usually causes death if not treated within minutes.

Based in Carlingford, HealthCo is a company which provides expert safety and health services all over Ireland.

According to HealthCo Director Declan Savage it’s a “rare event” for someone to have a cardiac arrest and defibrillators are “very easy to use”.

“You turn it on and it’s hard to do something wrong. It’s automatic and easy to use even if you’re completely untrained.

“There’s a voice prompt which directs the user on how to use it right.

Training helps people’s confidence in using it.

“There are defibrillators everywhere now in places such as shopping centres, streets and football clubs.

“You can never get fully confi-

dent at something you don’t practice very often. The fear will always be there.”

He added: “A lot are open but they look like they are locked. One of the things for sports clubs is to make sure you maintain it and make sure the battery and pads are charged and kept warm in the winter if it’s housed outside.

“If the outside temperature goes below 5 degrees it will affect it. It should be kept in a waterproof box.

If it’s kept indoors, it’s a lot easier to maintain.

Dundalk Gaels PRO Niall Lambert said the club has a defibrillator but there’s no point in having one if people aren’t comfortable using it.

“You need to have people trained up to use it. We have specific people trained up in the club, but not everyone knows how to do it,” he said.

“One of the main things in a cardiac arrest situation is CPR and to keep doing the compressions.

“Defibrillators give a shock but the compressions are needed to keep the heart going. You’d be exhausted after 30 seconds so you need a second person there who’s willing to take over until the ambulance arrives.”

Larch Centre launch stimulation therapy pilot project

FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL—Sarah Sage all set for her first day in the Cairde Unit of the Redeemer Girls' School.

THE newly renovated LARCH Centre in the Louth County Hospital has been hosting a pilot project for a Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) group.

The project is being run by HSE Senior Occupational Therapists Aisling Crilly and Sinead Flawes.

“The idea of the group is to provide people with an evidencebased practice intervention, proven to cognitively stimulate those with a cognitive impairment,” said Aisling.

“It has been proven to be more effective than medications for memory. The seven-week programme consisting of 14 sessions can improve a person’s overall cognition function, ie memory, attention, mood, and problem solving skills et cetera.

“It also provides a social outlet, with the idea that people may make new friendships, and gain ideas on how they can stimulate their brain through new hobbies and interests.”

The group, which is comprised of three people from Dundalk, Ravensdale and Carlingford, has

called itself ‘The Happy Wanderers’ and has chosen Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’ as a theme song.

“Each session kicks off with the group singing ‘Ring of Fire’.

Music helps with memory, mood and processing,” said Aisling.

“We had hoped to get five to eight people participating in the group but transport was a major stumbling block.

“We intend to put forward the benefits and outcomes of the project and to ask for a local bus to pick people up so they can attend group sessions if this project

is rolled out again in the future.”

She continued: “We have had informal feedback from the families of the participants who have told us that the programme has massively improved her mother’s mood.

“It’s a social outlet and something for participants to look forward too. We do a range of activities with them such as word puzzles, art and a variety of things.

“We also hope that there is a social element to the project and that the participants will make new friends.”

Being a board member of a charity or Community & Voluntary sector organisation can be a wonderful opportunity to share skills, experience and perspective for the good of our community. It can be hugely rewarding and offer opportunities for personal and professional development. Voluntary board members play an essential role in the not for profit sector, responsible for public benefit; governance; oversight and strategic direction. However, a report launched on the 23rd March 2021 by Joe O’Brien, Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development showed that one of the biggest challenges for Not for Profit organisations nation-

ally is a lack of volunteers putting themselves forward to become board members. With over 400 not for profit organisations in County Louth, many of whom are essential to our local communities, this is also a local challenge.

In response to this challenge Louth Volunteer Centre, through their PEACE IV funded Good Relations Initiative, developed a new training programme “Empowering You Empowering Our Community” to equip people with little or no experience of sitting on a board or committee with the knowledge and confidence to step into such a role. The Good Relations Initiative project is supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV

Programme, managed by the Special European Programmes Body (SEUPB) and supported locally by Louth County Council and Louth Local Community Development Committee (LCDC). Match-funding has been provided by The Executive Office in Northern Ireland and the Department for Rural and Community Development in Ireland.

Experts in their field such as The Wheel delivered specialist modules within the training. Feedback was extremely positive with all participants saying their knowledge about and confidence in their ability to be a voluntary board member had increased.

ering Our Community programme held in April and May 2021 was oversubscribed the Louth Volunteer Centre team have secured further funding from the Special European Programmes Body (SEUPB) to run it again in September and October 2021. A few spaces are now available to new applicants and the team are particular interested in hearing from young people aged 18 to 25 or people from new communities or of minority ethnic background. The programme starts on the 15th September and will run in the evenings and be held online. Ninth Cross Cooley Challenge on 2nd October This year’s Cross Cooley Challenge takes place on Saturday the 2nd of October 2021 in compliance with HSE Covid-19 guidelines.

The event is to raise much needed funds for our two very worthy local charities namely the North Louth Hospice which provides supports to those living with cancer and their families while the Maria Goretti Foundation runs the Childrens Respite Centre in Lordship providing much needed breaks for families.

We are again appealing to all our loyal walkers, sup-

porters, sponsors and indeed all newcomers are welcome to take the challenge in its ninth year. You can, as last year do “our walk, your way” during walk week Monday 27th September to Saturday 2nd October 2021.

At the same time we are asking as many as regulations allow to join us crossing the Coolies on Saturday 2nd October 2021, our walk day.

Holy Family bids farewell to the Marist Fathers The news, last November, that the Marist Fathers would be leaving Holy Family Parish at the end of August was received with shock and great sadness by both parishioners and friends of the parish. For 40 years the priests have been held in great affection and esteem, working tirelessly and effectively to provide for the needs of the parish, giving energetic support to the establishment of a wide range of parish activities.

The Marist Fathers assumed responsibility of the newly inaugurated Holy Family Parish on September 6th, 1981, with masses being held in the Bay Estate school and in a temporary church on a site in Muirhevnamor. The first priests appointed were Fr Des Hunt, Adm., Fr Vincent Duffy, S.M. and Fr

Derek Keeleghan S.M. In June 1989, the Administrator, Fr Sean McArdle S.M. formed a committee to plan for the building of a bigger church and parochial house in order to accommodate for the growing needs of the parish.

On August 30th 1992, the late Cardinal Cathal Daly blessed the foundation stone of the new church. The church was subsequently opened on December 20th 1992. The contract for the buildings was awarded to Mr Patsy Martin, Blackrock Road, Dundalk.

Twenty five Marist Fathers have served in the parish over the last 40 years. They have provided spiritual leadership and support, working collaboratively with parishioners to develop and provide for the parish’s needs. They provided forums such as Parish Com-

mittees, Core Groups and Parish Pastoral Councils to allow for parishioners’ needs to be heard and and to be acted upon. They immersed themselves totally in a host of parish activity groups.

This they have always done effectively in a quiet and unobtrusive manner. St Louis Secondary School benefits from 2020 Communities Integration Fund Although schools are only back this week, Sonya Mc Eneaney, St Louis Secondary School’s EAL (English as an Additional Language) teacher did not let that stop her from pursuing funding to offer assistance to students in the school. Ireland has changed dramatically in the last ten years and there are large numbers of students in every school in the country for whom English is not a first language. Sonya was delighted to receive €4,700 in funding to support an integration project under a funding initiative from the Department of Justice and Equality.

Drogheda Institute of Further Education is continuing to work on college reopening plans for the return of college students this September. What happens when you drive on a wet road

By Fiona Frawley, AA Ireland When you live in Ireland, “mind the road” isn’t just something you say when people leave the house, it’s a way of life. You never know what kind of road conditions might be thrown at you, but you can pretty much guarantee an aul rain shower no matter what time of year it is. Your control of your vehicle can be compromised on wet surfaces, and it’s important to know why that is and how to adjust your driving in these conditions.

This handy blog will tell you all you need to know.

Reduced grip When driving on a wet road surface, the grip of your tyres is reduced, which means it can take you longer to stop. This is why you’ll hear us advising you to leave extra space between your vehicle and the one in front on wet days, as stopping quickly can result in skidding. Tyres with a low tread depth (of less than 3mm) are less likely to clear water from

the road quick enough and can increase your chance of aquaplaning.

Regularly check your tyres, and get ready to replace them if the tread depth is below 3mm.

The legal minimum tread depth in Ireland is 1.6mm, so make sure your tyres never get worn beyond that point.

Aquaplaning A wet road surface can also cause your car to aquaplane. If you don’t know what aquaplaning is, but think it could be a good innocuous topic to discuss with your father-in-law, then you’re in luck. We’re going to tell you all you need to know about it!

Aquaplaning occurs when water builds up in front of your tyres faster than your car’s ability to push it away. When wa-

ter is forced underneath your tyres, it creates a layer of water between your tyres and the road.

This can cause your tyres to lose their grip on the road, and your steering may be compromised. If your steering wheel feels ‘light’, you could be aquaplaning. Take care not to brake suddenly if this happens, avoid harsh steering and allow the car to slow down naturally by taking your foot off the accelerator.

There’s a risk of aquaplaning whenever there is standing water on the road. Naturally, the deeper the water, the higher the risk. It’s also worth remembering that surface water is often deeper than it might look, so only drive through if you

know it’s not too deep for your vehicle.

Sudden accelerations and higher speeds also increase your risk of aquaplaning, especially when driving through puddles or excess surface water. That’s why it’s important to slow down on a wet surface.

Driving on wet roadS Slow your speed and leave extra space between your vehicle and the one in front. On dry roads, the standard advice is to allow two seconds to elapse between the vehicle ahead of you passing a certain point and your vehicle passing that same point.

Double this in wet conditions. Only drive through standing water if you know it’s not too deep for your vehicle.
