THE Chairman of Dundalk Young Irelands has paid tribute to a young Dundalk woman who tragically fell ill and died while on a short break abroad.

Daire Ní Heidhin from Park Drive, Dundalk fell ill and died recently while on holiday in Prague with friends.

News of her death was met with shock and social media was flooded with tributes for Daire who worked in Little Partners Creche in

Dundalk.

Daire’s parents Tony and Jennifer are currently in Prague where they have received assistance by the Irish Embassy.

The 29-year-old childcare worker played with Dundalk Young Irelands. According to Barry McDermott, Chairman of Dundalk Young Irelands Daire played with the Senior Ladies team.

“The team was set up towards the end of last year. She came in

towards the early stages of the season,” said Barry.

“She was a lovely wee girl. I knew her from years ago. I taught her how to drive. She bonded straight away with her teammates and got on with everyone. She was a good kid.

Daire’s close friend, primary school teacher Niamh Kerley set up a Gofundme page in response to the tragedy to help cover the costs of bringing Daire home.

Dundalk family count their blessings after fire escape A Dundalk family have thanked the quick response of the fire brigade as well as their neighbours and friends following a fire in their home last Tuesday evening. Wayne and Jennifer Dunne along with their five children were forced to flee their home in St Nicholas Avenue at around 5:30 last week when the fusebox in the hall went on fire and quickly caused a blaze in the hallway of the house.

The goal was to raise €10,000 but it has now exceeded the original goal and raised over €17,000.

“Her parents are coming home tomorrow and hopefully Daire will follow suit by the end of the week,” said Barry.

Daire’s club Dundalk Young Ireland also paid tribute to their player in a post on social media.

“Early this morning our friend and comrade Daire was taken from us and given her angel wings. We are all devastated for her and her family And friends.

Life can be so cruel.

Far too young to leave us.

Wayne who had just returned from work a short time earlier was in the shower when his wife Jennifer raised the alarm.

five kids quickly left the house after calling the fire brigade who according to Wayne arrived very quickly on the scene.

“I have to give a big thank you to the fire brigade who arrived within five minutes of us calling them. I was in the shower having just got back from work about 5:30 or so in the evening when the lights went out and the shower stopped working. Then I heard

Jennifer screaming up to me that there was a fire in the hall and we all got out of the house as quickly as we could. The fire began when the fuse board started sparking before it exploded with a loud bang. I must thank the brilliant neighbours we have down in St Nicholas Avenue as well .They rallied around us and have been a great help over the last few days. It’s a great place with great people.

The house is badly damaged from the amount of smoke that went through the house, and we have had to move out. We stayed in the Fairways for the past few days and the staff up there have been brilliant to us. We have been able to find an apartment to rent while we wait for our house to become habitable again which won’t be for another couple of months I’d guess. Luckily, we

had house insurance so that’s something.

“It’s not ideal being out of the house so close to Christmas and the whole thing was a big shock to us all but the main thing is everybody got out safe and nobody was harmed.

I dread to think what would have happened if this occured during the night. The house can be repaired but lives can’t,” stated Wayne.

Urgent clarity needed on Sruthán House Respite Service - Munster

Imelda Munster TD has called on the government to provide clarity on when Sruthán House Respite Service will be reopening, given that the centre has been closed since March 2020, while other similar services have reopened on a phased basis since July 2020.

Deputy Munster has been raising this issue with the Minister for Disabilities, Anne Rabbitte TD since April this year, and has yet to receive confirmation that full services will resume.

Sruthán House provides respite care for people in Louth, and has been shut since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.

There are concerns amongst service-users and their families that the service will not reopen, no doubt due to a previous attempt to close down the service in 2019, a move which did not go ahead due to a campaign

days, however the response did not give any assurances on the future of the service which is of huge concern.

going on for months.

“Sruthán House provides vital services for people in Louth, and given previous attempts to shut the service, those who use it are understandably nervous that the HSE may be hiding behind the pandemic in an effort to shut down the service permanently.

“I do not accept that the Minister can’t give assurances as to the security of the service in the coming months and years.

“What we need is a cast-iron guarantee that the moment the current surge in cases has eased, that Sruthán House will be open. No more skirting, no more stalling.

“I have written to Minister Rabbitte again asking her to confirm when service-users can expect the service to reopen.

“It’s unfair to leave people in limbo like this. We need concrete answers and assurances about the future of Sruthán House.”

Public are weary over COVID-19 states Fitzpatrick

Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has urged the government to stop using the COVID-19 crisis as a political football and instead concentrate on working together to beat the virus once and for all.

“Ireland had its first official case of COVID in late February 2020. Almost 20 months later, we are still fighting this pandemic. Case numbers have rocketed in recent weeks. As we get closer to Christmas, many people and businesses are unsure of what is going to happen. Unfortunately, the message from the Government is not clear. To be honest, it is creating a situation where people are speculating on what is likely to happen next.

“We hear members of NPHET making statements daily in the media that appear to be at odds with what Government Ministers are saying. This is adding to the worry of people and businesses in general,” ex-

plained the Independent TD. “It is important that this issue not be used as a political football by people trying to get publicity. We must all work together, along with the public health advisory team, to ensure Covid is beaten once and for all. My greatest fear in all of this is what is coming down the road for health services. How many people have had medical appointments cancelled as a result of the pandemic?

“How many people have had diagnoses of serious medical conditions such as cancer missed because of a cancelled appointment? Unfortunately, the answers will only become clear over the next number of years.

I hope I am wrong in this but I fear what is coming next.

“The public are very weary. People are weary of all the restrictions they have faced over the past 20-odd months. They are weary because they do not know what is happening from one day to another. I have generally supported the Government in its handling of the pandemic. This was a situation nobody could have predicted and there was no roadmap for it.

“However, having had 20 months to deal with the situation, it still seems like the Government does not

to know what to do next. I call on the Government and the Taoiseach to lead this country by bringing forward a roadmap that clearly shows how we can beat the pandemic. The public needs to be given assurances that the measures that are proposed will work if implemented. I know from speaking to many of my constituents in Dundalk and the surrounding area that people want to know how we can get ourselves free from this pandemic. The roadmap needs to be clear and simple, with a clear timeline of implementation.

We cannot continue with a situation where there are different messages coming from all parties on almost a daily basis,” insisted Deputy Fitzpatrick.

“It has not worked on the three previous occasions and we cannot expect it to work now. We deserve to know what is happening and to have an end to speculation. I do not want to walk down the street in Dundalk or Drogheda and have people asking me whether such-and-such is happening on 13 December or 20 December. We need to stop the speculation and get a roadmap in place. I am glad to see the Minister, Deputy Donnelly, is back in the Chamber. We need a roadmap that is precise and we all need to be speaking the same language,” he added.

Jona qualifies for Junior Science Olympiad finals The organisers of the annual Maths and Junior Science Olympiad in Ireland created a new category this year - the Irish European Olympiad of Experimental Science.

Students in TY and above were allowed to compete in the categories of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Fifth year St Louis student Jona Garcia was one of 230 entrants. Her chosen field was Chemistry, which is a very popular subject at Leaving Cert in the school. Teacher Elaine McGrath was delighted to hear from Jona that she is one of the less than 40 entrants who will proceed to the next round to be held in person in Dublin in January.

Those who progress from the next round will compete in teams to go forward to the European final to be held in Prague in May 2022.

Northend Bar fundraiser for Let’s Talk Mental Health

The Northend Bar on Bridge Street was the venue for a very successful fundraiser recently which helped raise €1400 for the Let’s Talk Mental Health charity which is run locally in Dundalk. The charity run a charity shop on Clanbrassil Street with all funds raised used to promote the issues surrounding mental health and help those in need.

Keen darts fan Peter McGuinness organised for PDC Darts professional ‘Rapid’ Ricky Evans to come to the Northend Bar to play against some local players. The UK darts player is hugely popular amongst darts fans due to his extremely quick throwing style, and he is generally considered to be the quickest thrower on the professional circuit. Peter wanted to try and raise some funds for the local Let’s Talk Mental Health charity and helped organise the evening.

The evening in the Northend Bar was a huge success with plenty coming out to see Ricky and even get a chance to play against the 31-year-old Northamptonshire man. Anita McCann and Lynette McEneaney from the Let’s Talk Mental Health charity were also in attendance on the evening, and everybody involved in the fundraiser would like to thank all the local businesses who generously donated prizes for the raffle and to everybody who donated or attended the evening in the Northend Bar. A final total of €1400 was raised on a very enjoyable evening with all funds going directly to Let’s Talk Mental Health.

The former Principal of De La Salle Dundalk, Patricia O’Leary, was honoured for her commitment to teaching and the Lasallian values over a period of almost four decades.

Patricia was the guest of honour at the Lasallian School Leaders in Conference in Mullingar where Provincial of the District of Ireland, Great Britain and Malta, Br. Ben Hanlon, made a special presentation as a mark of appreciation.

Br. Ben thanked Patricia for all her efforts down through the years as a teacher who lived and shared the Lasallian values. He wished her all the best in her retirement while expressing the hope that she would continue to be involved with the District in the future.

Nicola Connolly, who succeeded Patricia as Principal, also paid tribute for all the great work she had done over the years, how she provided great support in her role as Deputy Principal, while continuing to be as source of guidance in her new position.

The primary education system is ‘creaking at the seams’ according to INTO General Secretary John Boyle. He called for an immediate review of the Covid-19 response plan for both primary and special schools to address the increase in case numbers.

Those comments were made following the release of a survey by INTO which revealed that 3.6% of staff nationally (605 of 16,694) tested positive for COVID while in Louth 1 in 50 pupils (around 100) missed schools due to issues around COVID. The snapshot survey asked 877 primary school teachers nationwide a number of questions to assess the level of COVID 19 infection issues in our schools between the 1st of November and 16th November.

According to John Boyle the government need to address the soaring infection rates immediately to support the primary education system which he claimed was under severe pressure.

“Our snapshot survey shines a light on a primary education system that is creaking at the seams.

Soaring transmission levels are an indictment of the premature removal of testing and contact

tracing from our primary schools, and of the frustrating failure to move quickly to deploy antigen testing. The cessation of public health risk assessments following primary school outbreaks, and the resulting unavailability of weekly reports detailing infection levels from 27 September, has concealed the escalation of positive case numbers among pupils and staff in primary schools. It simply cannot be a coincidence that the number of 5–12-year-old children contracting the virus has trebled since crucial public health supports were removed from the primary sector less than two months ago, abandoning teachers and principals to protect themselves and their unmasked, unvaccinated pupils from the impact of the highest wave of infection in their schools since the pandemic began,” explained John.

“The results of the survey indicate that a significant number of school staff (605 staff members in 877 schools that responded to the survey) contracted Covid-19 in recent weeks. This contrasts starkly with the extremely low level of infection among adults in schools that had been reported in official data

John Boyle, INTO General Secretary on schools’ mass testing prior to 27 September and challenges the narrative that Irish primary schools are low risk environments.

“This union’s view is that the recent statement from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (“sharing a classroom can be considered a high-risk exposure” – 28 October 2021) must be taken seriously by the Irish government if we are to sustain schooling in the coming months. The government must do everything in its power to minimise the risk of exposure in every primary school classroom,” urged the general secretary.

“The INTO calls for an immediate review of the

Covid-19 response plans for primary and special schools to address the upsurge in infection levels manifest since the delta variant took hold in school communities.

“The fast-tracking of the booster vaccine programme and the provision of vaccines for children aged under 12 will be essential to support the primary education system in the coming months.

“From now until Christmas, clear and consistent public health messaging, scaled-up public health mitigation measures with a renewed emphasis on improving air quality, increasing social distancing, limiting congregation within and near school facilities and a willingness to respond quickly are essential if we want to ensure that schools can operate safely for the next month.

“The INTO remains resolved to work constructively to tackle the crisis with the Department of Education and primary education stakeholders, but the absence of public health support makes our task to limit further opportunities for transmission of the virus and our attempts to minimise disruption in schools bigger and more difficult by the day”.

Oversight Board Chair and Deputy Chair elected as push to boost economy between Dublin and Belfast gains momentum

A new cross-border partnership established to foster economic growth along the key strategic route between Dublin and Belfast has today announced its inaugural political leadership team who will help drive employment opportunities, address barriers impacting trade and encourage the delivery of better transport infrastructure.

Cllr Pete Byrne from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in Northern Ireland was elected as Chair of the Dublin Belfast Economic Corridor (DBEC) Oversight Board, a body made up of councillors from the eight local authorities along the corridor.

Cllr Seána Ó Rodaigh of Fingal County Council in Ireland was named Deputy Chair.

Addressing the Oversight Board’s meeting in County Meath, new Chair Cllr Pete Byrne said: “We have a real opportunity through the work of DBEC to deliver jobs and sustainable growth along

Deputy Chair of DBEC Cllr Seána Ó Rodaigh said: “Alongside the obvious social and economic benefits of closer cross border collaboration in order to develop the corridor, what we are looking to help drive is greater inward investment, the boosting of trade opportunities for local businesses, increased production in key sectors and higher

employment. This will be increasing important as the population along the corridor continues to grow.”

Currently there are some two million people living in the eight council areas that the economic corridor passes through, however its population is expected to grow faster than elsewhere across the island of Ireland. Predictions are that the total population will reach 2.5 million by 2040, bringing with it a younger and more diverse concentration of people.

Local amateur photographer Darran Rafferty has released a range of calendar’s which highlight some of the most picturesque areas of Dundalk and further afield.

Dundalk Calendar is now in its 8th year featuring photos of The Redemptorist, McEntee Avenue, Market Square, and the Big Bridge. This has proved to be very popular over the last few years with copies shipped all over the world to Dundalk expats and this year features '12 Dundalk Facts' Navvybank Calendar is now in its 10th year and this year features some pictures from local photographer Jean Gilson who is well known for taking wonderful snaps from all angles of the bank. €5 from each sale goes to SOSAD Dundalk who do great work locally.

Dundalk RFC girls have put girls rugby firmly on the map for the Mill road club as their u14 and u 18 girls booked their places in the Leinster plate final making it a double header on Saturday 18th December for both teams.

The U14 girls will contest their place in the final against Arklow RFC while their U18 girls make it a northeast duel with their opposition coming from Navan RFC. With a Northeast final for our U18 girls v Navan RFC it will make it a Christmas cracker for our Leinster Northeast players Aoife Purcell, Sophia Murdock, Lila O’Molloy, Jennifer McElroy and Sophie Woulfe as they line out against their Leinster Northeast teammates in their respective club jerseys!! What an exciting final it will make for!

Rugby is an empowering sport that teaches many valuable lessons and with a huge growth in the girls game, Dundalk RFC has seen an unprecedented growth in the numbers of girls playing rugby on their Mill Road playing fields in the investment in and in the advancement of the girls game at the club and in the rise in the numbers of Dundalk RFC selected at provincial, interprovincial and international level.

The current U18 girls team boasts five Leinster northeast players in Aoife Purcell, Sophia Murdock, Lila O’Molloy, Jennifer McElroy and Sophie Woulfe.

We have all been very proud to watch them wear the Dundalk jersey and the Leinster northeast jersey as they have continued to develop due to their talent, committment, dedication and hard work. And due to the Dundalk RFC and Leinster Northeast coaches who have refused to let them be anything but the best they can be. They have been role models for the u14 girls and leaders on the pitch among their own u18 teammates. We are so proud of them.

Our u14 and u18 Dundalk RFC girls are girls who love the game and who never stop trying, who never stop chasing their dreams and who know they must push harder for a different tomorrow. . They have embodied the rugby values of respect, teamwork, integrity and discipline and they have worked tirelessly to surpass their individual potential to excel as a unit which has culminated in this unique double header, a phenomenal achievement for the club by any standard. All that remains now if for us to stand shoulder to shoulder with them as they play what will certainly prove to be a Christmas cracker.

Coláiste Chú Chulainn work with US School and University on Climate Change The Transition Year Students at Coláiste Chú Chulainn have been taking part in an exciting international project involving a high-school from Virginia in the United States and James Madison University.

On Friday 19th November TY students participated in their first online workshop on TEAMS with Harrisonburg High School.

This involved a sharing of ideas as part of the ESCAPE (Environmental Social Cultural Across Planet Education) project.

TY students engaged in a video call across the Atlantic with teachers (Seth Shantz and Andy Jackson) and their STEM class.

A video discussion and back and forth took place involving Cú Chulainn students studying : Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Politics & Society and Geography and STEM students in Harrisonburg High.

Students compared energy policies, climates, landscapes, and the benefits and disadvantages of renewable and nonrenewable sources of energy across Ireland.

In their next discussion, Cú Chulainn students will be sharing ideas and discussing challenges with students in other countries and settings too. The school will be incorporating ideas from these workshops into their green schools program and policies as they seek to use less energy and promote Energy Conservation.

Students also got to know one another and asked questions about hobbies, free time, sports teams supported and there was particular interest in the food available in respective canteens!

Colaiste Chu Chulainn were became involved in this project through the James Madison University. Deputy Principal, Richard Melaniphy, has been working with James Madison University over the last eight years.

He noted that there have been 76 trainee teachers over to Ireland from the US over the years. Which has broadened pedagogical and instructional leadership in schools that have taken part.

Andy Jackson from Harrisonburg High School and Dr. Robbie Higson from JMU, visited Coláiste Chú Chulainn in November 2019 and March 2020 (just before lockdown) where they met with Mr Melaniphy and teachers to plan this project. Unfortunately Covid restrictions and lockdown have hindered and restricted elements of the plan.

Mr Melaniphy visited JMU and Harrisonburg High School in March 2019 and met the teachers and students there to share practice in developing innovative teaching and learning opportunities for students and teachers.

Speaking about the project and its plans, Mr Melaniphy remarked: ‘We're planning on having two or three trainee teachers from JMU on teaching practice placement with us in Dundalk, working with TY students and Junior Cycle students in May 2022’.

Specsavers Dundalk help to save woman’s sight as blood clots cause a stroke in 19 year old’s brain A VISIT to Specsavers Dundalk proved to be life saving for 19-year-old Neche Okolo when her optometrist discovered symptoms of a blood clot in her brain.

In January 2021, Neche was admitted to hospital after experiencing a sore neck, nausea, and persistent headaches. As things improved she was discharged with a suspected viral infection. However, her symptoms began to return only this time Neche was also experiencing blurred vision and her left eye was drifting to one side.

She called Specsavers Dundalk for an appointment with her community optometrist where she was seen

by Martina Kelly. After reviewing her symptoms, running some tests and performing a full eye examination, she knew Neche needed an urgent referral to the Mater Hospital Eye Clinic.

‘It was evident to me on meeting Neche that something wasn’t quite right. Her left eye was very much drifting to one side and she appeared to be in quite a lot of pain. A scan using the digital retinal camera confirmed what I had initially suspected, a case of papilloedema, which is typically caused by pressure in the head, particularly around the brain. I tried to reassure Neche as I referred her to hospital straight away for further examination,’ says Martina.

The digital retinal camera takes a photograph of the back of your eyes giving optician’s a more in depth look at the health of the eye. This image is saved and can be useful in monitoring changes in eye health on future visits. As a previous patient of Specsavers, Martina was able to cross check Neche’s new images against her previous ones where it was evident that there was signs of papilloedema. The two sets of images were shared with the expert team at The Mater Hospital to help illustrate how bad Neche’s condition was.

After several MRI and CT scans it was confirmed that Neche had cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.

Neche says: ‘Blood clots had formed and caused a stroke in my brain. My ophthalmologist told me that only one in one million people have this condition and it is highly unusual in one so young. I’m now telling everyone to make sure they get their eyes tested.’

Neche says: ‘I am so incredibly grateful to Martina for quickly detecting my condition and acting so fast in referring me to the Mater Hospital. Her professionalism and expertise in approaching the situation was incredibly reassuring. She was so calm and supportive through it all and this helped stop me from spiralling out of control. I am eternally grateful to Martina and Specsavers Dundalk for potentially saving my life.’

Martina had called ahead to the Mater Hospital to bring them up to speed on the situation. Within minutes the ophthalmology team called Neche to let them know they were ready and waiting and would be bringing her for tests.

Neche continues: ‘The team at the Mater Eye Clinic were incredible and the communication between Specsavers and the hospital was seamless which was incredibly reassuring.’

Thankfully Neche’s condition was picked up and she was referred for urgent treatment and care. She will continue to be monitored for blood clots as her doctor’s ensure she is in good care. Had this not been picked up it could have been a very different outcome.

Neche has also ensured to keep in touch with her optician Martina throughout the process and has been back to Specsavers Dundalk to have her eyes tested.

Since her initial appointment she has also had an OCT scan, which gives an even more in depth look at the eye and the overall health of the eye so that they may continue to monitor her condition Neche now wants to share her story to encourage people to take a proactive approach to their eye health and show that eye tests are much more than just about whether you need glasses or not. She also wants to stress the importance of paying attention to a sudden change in vision and the need to act fast.

Martina adds: ‘It’s important that anyone noticing a change in their vision gets it seen to right away.

While usually this is down to a change in prescription or from our eyes feeling tired, in other cases it can be something more serious. If you have any concerns about your eyes, especially with a sudden change in your vision, make an appointment as soon as possible.

Don’t delay.

‘If people have missed an appointment during the pandemic, we urge them to rebook. We are still adhering to strict safety precautions in our stores.’

Record high fuel prices affecting household budgets – AA Ireland

Average fuel prices for Petrol and Diesel are at a record high in Ireland according to data collated by AA Ireland.

The average price for Unleaded Petrol now stands at 172.6 cents per litre in the state, with the average price of Diesel now at 163.3 cents per litre. The prices are the highest AA Ireland has seen since we started recording the figures in 1991.

These figures equate to a 37% increase in Petrol and a 39% increase in the price of Diesel fuel compared to this time last year.

“We are now seeing record high fuel prices in this country. It is very worrying for everyone, but especially lower-income families in rural areas who are unsure whether they will be able to afford fuel for their cars, or even heat their homes,” says AA Ireland Head of Communications, Paddy Comyn.

A combination of factors has led to the increase in fuel prices globally. Oil production plummeted during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide and has still not entirely recovered. Recently,

the price of a barrel of oil reached $85, but has since settled under $80.

But in Ireland, around two-thirds of the price motorists pay at the pump is tax – and it can take two weeks for any reductions to reach the pumps.

“The cost of motoring in Ireland is ever-increasing and while there is a move to shift motorists into electric vehicles, it does appear to be at the expense of lower income families and motorists.”

“It’s very expensive when you have a family trying to budget and pay their mortgage, groceries and general expenses. People in rural Ireland rely on their cars. They don’t have the public transport infrastructure to support their daily lives,” adds Comyn.

“It is also very frustrating for students who are trying to juggle fees, rent and now fuel for their vehicles, while often working part-time jobs.”

“Prices are only going to continue to rise until something is done. Changes need to be made, particularly in the area of taxation.”
