‘Inquiry will give closure to Dealgan House families’

Louth Sinn Fein tD Ruairi o Murchu has said the announcement that there is to be an inquiry into the State’s handling of Covid-19 will “raise people’s hopes”.

An inquiry into the State’s handling of Covid-19 is to be set up this year, according to taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

The taoiseach added that the inquiry will not set out to apportion blame but will help to prepare for future pandemics. During the first Covid 19 outbreak in 2020, 23 people died between April and May. Many of the families who lost loved ones have been campaigning for a full inquiry to answer all questions regarding nursing home deaths in Dealgan house during Covid-19. The nursing home based in toberona which has since been sold and is now called Curam Care was one of the worst hit nursing homes during the devastating early days of the pandemic. It was also the only nursing home in the country taken over by the hSE. Continued on Page 2

“There is an element of raising people’s hopes. we need to see some detail. we are not sure how all encompassing the inquiry will be.

A tribute to liam

Just over two years ago on New Years Day 2021, Dundalk lost one of their favourite musical sons when the sad news emerged that Liam Reilly had passed away at the age of 65.

tributes poured in for the former Bagatelle front man who had penned many hits including ‘summer in Dublin’ ‘trump Card’ and ‘Flight of the Earls’. Liam also represented Ireland in the 1990 Eurovision song Contest, finishing joint runner up with his song ‘somewhere in Europe.’

Dundalk man Pat Kerley was a friend of Liam’s and he recently penned the following verse in tribute to the Fatima man.

una thanked the business community of Dundalk for getting behind this scheme and buying the vouchers for their staff this Christmas. una mentioned “these sales would not have happened if it has not been for the good will of the business community who see the value in keeping money in the locality. Stopping the flow of money from the town has been our priority.” una also thanked members of the public who bought the vouchers and kept it local this Christmas. una commented that “this initiative was set up to help keep money and protect local jobs within the local economy. Follow French lead and install solar panels in car parks

iNSTAlliNG solar panels on car parks across the country would increase Ireland’s renewable energy supply, a Fine gael Senator has said.

Fine gael Senator John Mcgahon has called on Minister Eamon Ryan and Minister Daragh o’Brien to follow the lead of France and make it a requirement for all large car parks to install solar panels.

“Such a move to install solar panels in car parks is an effective way to generate and increase the supply of renewable energy in Ireland,” he stated.

last month, the French government passed legislation forcing all large car parks in the country to install solar panels in a move to drive renewable energy forward.

“The fallout of Russia’s invasion of ukraine is making all european countries review their domestic energy supplies and seek more sustainable resources.

“French legislation now requires car parks with 80 to 400 spaces to install solar panels in the next five years, whereas larg-

er car parks will only have three years to comply.

“According to the French Government around eleven gigawatts of energy could be generated if all car parks comply, which is equivalent to ten nuclear reactors.

“This is the type of radical move that is required to increase renewable energy supply and should be followed by Minister Eamon Ryan and Minister Daragh o’Brien.

“Minister Eamon Ryan recently confirmed that the Department of Housing, local government and Heritage would have responsibility for considering such a measure through the European driven ‘Energy Performance in Buildings’ directive.[1]

“The Minister for Climate Action also confirmed that the Department of Housing has not considered such a measure.

“The onus is on the Minister for Climate Action and the minister for Housing to take radical measures and put forward legislation that would increase our supply in renewable energies.

“Renewable energy sources used in the generation of electricity in Ireland has increased from 5% in 1990 to 42% in 2020, however over half of that energy production is from wind[2]. Comparatively, solar energy is the lowest source of energy generation in the State. “

“It may be sunnier in France than it is here, nevertheless solar panels only need daylight to generate power,” Senator Mcgahon added.

Open water swimming riding the crest of a wave in its popularity

oPEn water swimming is riding the crest of a wave in popularity with more and more people deciding to dip their toe into the often icy cold pursuit. Studies have shown that the benefits of open water swimming include benefits to mental health, weight loss and even boosting your immune system.

81 year-old Donegal man Paddy Conaghan is the perfect advertisement for the benefits of open water swimming with the Donegal man making waves last year when he took part in his ‘Ducking and Driving around Ireland’ fundraiser which raised in excess of €112,000 in aid of Donegal based mental health charity gemma’s legacy of Hope. The Ducking and Driving around Ireland challenge saw Paddy pledge to swim at every beach and pier in Ireland.

Paddy has donned his swimming shorts once more as he makes his way clockwise around the country for a second time, taking in over 600 beaches before returning to his hometown in Arranmore in midMarch this year. on Christmas Eve Paddy arrived at Carlingford lough where he en-

joyed a cold swi m before chatting and having the craic with locals until it was time to get in the van and head on to his next port of call.

A local open water swimming group called Swimhatters have recently formed with swimmers from around the county meeting up in beaches around the north of the county including Templetown and gyles’ Quay.

The group which currently has just over 80 members is calling on anyone interested in joining the group to get involved.

Swimhatters member Aileen harmon told the Dundalk leader that Swimhatters started before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in 2020.

“It focused on mental health and wellbeing by swimming in the sea. It grew in numbers quickly and great friendships and fun have developed,” said Aileen.

“we completed a Darkness into light swim, Christmas swims and night swims throughout the whole year over the years and raised over €2,000 for the Irish lifeboats.”

new members are openly welcomed and if you wish to join please text Aileen on 0861728744.

Festive period a busy time for Dundalk Rotary Club

FOR many years the Rotary of Dundalk have been delivering food parcels at Christmas to needy families in the town of Dundalk. this year the Rotary Club, in lieu of delivering food parcels decided instead to present st Vincent de Paul society in Dundalk with a generous cheque which was used to help needy families in the locality over the Christmas period.

From 1971 the Rotary Club of Dundalk have been delivering Christmas dinners to people in need around Dundalk. That fine tradition continued in 2022 with thirty-two meals being delivered to families around Dundalk. the Rotary Club wish to thank the local catering company

D-Lish who provided the meals this year.

Christmas is always a busy period for the Rotary Club and another tradition they continued over the festive period was to erect the Remembrance tree on Earl

st. in Dundalk. the tree gives members of the public a chance to remember their loved ones who have died or are in hospital or who are abroad and couldn’t get home for Christmas. A note written on a ribbon

was tied to the branches of the tree which was on Earl street between the 18th December to 24th December.

Voluntary donations received were distributed to Rotary charities around the town.

Louth Village man leads Mars project in university of Arizona

wITH every passing year scientists are finding out a little bit more about our planetary neighbour Mars and with that information it is hoped that studying Mars’ climate can help scientists understand ongoing climate change on Earth.

in recent years a university of Arizona run camera orbiting Mars has detected ice a few meters under the planet’s surface which bodes well for future human exploration. louth viilage man Shane Byrne is leading the hiriSe project which takes pictures of Mars and he recently spoke with the Dundalk leader to explain a bit more about the project.

“I’m a professor of Planetary Sciences at the university of Arizona. we do a lot work here with different NASA and eSA (european Space Agency) space missions around the solar system. i’m the acting-Pi (Pi = principal investigator, the lead person on the project) on hiriSe, which is a high-resolution camera taking

pictures of the surface of Mars.

“The HiRISE data get used by many people for many things, but my particular interest is in the polar caps. Martian polar caps have layers in the ice just like Greenland or Antarctica here on

the Earth and we can use those as a climate record on Mars. Mars is a much simpler climate system than the earth (no oceans, vegetation, or people) so the hope is that if we can understand how climate change on Mars works then it will help understand other planets like the Earth or exoplanets around other stars.

“I had a circuitous route to get here. I got interested in astronomy as a kid when I found a tiny ancient dusty book on constellations in my grandparents house. I was amazed to find out in secondary school that you could actually go and study that in college and once I knew that there was nothing else I wanted to do. I went to the university of Cardiff first in 1998 to do Astrophysics and then moved to the uSA for graduate school. I’ve moved around the States a bit before starting here in Arizona in 2007.

“I suppose it is quite a contrast from louth village - living in the desert here still feels like an alien landscape,” laughs Shane.

Average price of a three-bedroom semi-detached in louth is €235,000 st stephens Day swim for Chernobyl

THE MyHome.ie Q4 2022 report, in association with Davy, found that the average asking price for a three-bedroom semidetached house in Co louth stood at €235,000.

The figure was an increase of 4.44 per cent on the previous year, according to the MyHome. ie report.

Meanwhile, the average asking price for a four-bedroom semi-detached property in the wee County was €285,000.

This figure was up 4.59 per cent on the previous year. The largest annual increase related to two-bedroom apartments in Co louth.

The median asking price for a two-bedroom apartment in Q4 of 2022 was €170,000, an annual increase of 8.28 per cent.

The report found that annual asking price inflation slowed to 6% nationwide, and was 3.6% in Dublin and 7.6% elsewhere around the country.

Meanwhile, the report found quarterly asking price inflation dropped by 0.4% nationally, by 0.8% in Dublin, and by 0.2% elsewhere around the country.

This means the median asking price for new instructions nationally is now €330,000, while the price in Dublin is €436,000 and elsewhere around the country it is €283,000.

The author of the report, Conall MacCoille, Chief Economist at Davy, said that it appeared the market had held up better than anecdotal evidence had suggested in 2022.

“The number of vendors cutting their asking prices is still at low levels,” he said. “Also, transactions in Q4 were still being settled above asking prices, indicative of a tight market.

“There are 15,000 properties listed for sale on MyHome.ie, an improvement from the beginning of 2022 but below pre-pandemic levels exceeding 20,000.

“The average time to sale agreed in Q4 was just 2.7 months, still close to historic lows.

“we expect transactions will exceed €21bn in 2022, up 7.5% in volume terms on 2021.”

real Talks SoSAD weekly Column

ThrouGhouT January, the Dundalk leader will run a weekly column by Alan o’mara on behalf of suicide prevention and awareness charity SoSAD (Save our Sons and Daughters). Alan o’Mara is the founder of Real Talks, a former Cavan GAA player, an author and a performance and wellbeing coach with sports and business leaders around the world. This column is part of the Real Talks with SoSAD ireland well-being series. Check out www.sosadireland.ie/ real-talks/ to learn more.

welcome to my first column as part of the Real Talks with SoSAD ireland well-being series. Each week I will outline a mental skill that can help you to live a happier, healthier and more successful life. I will explain why these mental skills are important, and how you can develop them through strategic and consistent practice.

life challenges us all in different ways, but I be-

lieve the sharing of human experiences empowers us all. I will share key insights from my work as a performance and well-being consultant with sports and business leaders around the world and reflect on key lessons from my own well-being journey. what is self-awareness? whenever I collaborate with people or teams around performance and well-being, I always start with a discussion about self-awareness. Selfawareness is a mental skill that helps us monitor our thoughts, feelings and actions. Self-awareness is the ability to see yourself clearly and objectively through reflection and introspection. It is taking a pause to look in the mirror and get into a state of selffocused attention.

A lack of self-awareness was one of the main reasons why depression took over my life in my early twenties and dragged me to a very dark place. The absence of self-awareness

meant I wasn’t able to understand what was happening in my head. I often withdrew from the world and spent countless hours in bed trying to numb my brain with tv shows, movies or social media. when that didn’t work, I resorted to binge drinking as a way to escape my thoughts and feelings. I consistently chose to find distractions from external sources, instead of looking inwards for understanding or solutions.

After suicidal thoughts and feelings almost became suicidal action, I turned to counselling to help me find my way out of the dark place I found myself in. Many hour long conversations with a trained professional slowly improved my self-awareness and empowered my journey back to wellness.

More than ten years later, one powerful conversation I shared with my counsellor in the therapy room still sticks with regards to self-awareness.

My counsellor looked at me and said, “Describe yourself to me. who are you?”

“i’m Alan o’mara.”

“That’s your name, but who are you? what makes you, well, you?” he said.

“I suppose people will always say, ‘There’s the

Cavan keeper. He’s happy and outgoing’.”

“That’s not what I mean. That’s what other people see. let’s try this a different way. give me a couple of words that best describe you as a person.”

“Eh . . . intelligent?” I said, before waiting to see if I was on the right track. He nodded in approval.

“Eh . . . thoughtful?” I added.

“Thoughtful in what way?”

“i suppose i just get on well with people. A lot of times, if people are going through something, they tend to come to me for a chat or ask for advice. I don’t go looking for it, they just tend to find me.”

“That’s good. Between now and our next visit, I want you to take some time to think about what makes you you. who is the real Alan o’mara?”

“not the one people see playing in Croke Park, not the one people see in a pub or a nightclub, in the dressing room or at work.

I want you to really think about who you are and what you enjoy doing.”

It is a conversation I will never forget. I am grateful to have been part of many more conversations about self-awareness over the years since then. For example, in a recent interview I did with Rory o’Connor, more commonly known as Rory’s Stories, for the Real Talks with SoSAD ireland wellbeing hub, he too highlighted self-awareness as an integral mental skill. He said, “I’d love to tell you that since 2013 that my life was unreal. That every day is sunshine and rainbows and I’ve little bunny rabbits hopping around my feet every morning. No!

The depression still kicks in and kicks out. i’m just aware of it now and my self-awareness, I think, is extremely good nowadays because I’m understanding myself more and more and what leads me to a dip.”

Developing self-awareness

I grew up in a sportsworld where we always talked about the ‘next ball’ or the ‘next play’. That mindset was helpful in some ways but it often meant I was too busy looking forward and distracting myself from the present. working with a counsellor and journaling were two things that really helped me to change that.

I highly recommend journaling to people, teams and organizations that want to develop selfawareness. You don’t have to be a brilliant writer! each day you journal, take 5 deep breaths and write down the first 5 thoughts that come to your mindno matter how important or trivial they seem. At the end of each week, reflect back on your thoughts, feelings and actions and see how you feel about the words you put on paper.

The ability to see yourself clearly and objectively will become stronger the more you practice taking a minute to reflect.

GoFundMe page set up in memory of Private sean Rooney

ColleAGueS of the Dundalk soldier tragically killed in lebanon have set up a charity fundraiser in his memory. Irish soldiers serving with 121 uNiFil in lebanon set up the Seán rooney 100km run GoFundMe page on Monday and over €7,000 has been raised already with almost 200 people contributing thus far.

The fundraiser, organised by Alex Tate, will raise money in aid of Rainbows Ireland Child & Youth grief & loss Support Clg. Meanwhile, a man has been arrested in lebanon suspected of killing Private Sean Rooney. Hezbollah handed the man over to security forces last week.

The 24-year-old peacekeeper was driving a uN-marked armoured utility vehicle, which came under attack in the Al-Aqbieh area of south lebanon after becoming separated from an accompanying vehicle.

Private rooney’s vehicle came under fire and after the vehicle was overturned the Dundalk man was killed after shots were fired into the vehicle.

The link to the goFundMe page can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-sean-rooney-100km-run-in-january.

Dundalk sub Aqua Club thank public for support Parkrun closes out 2022 in style

DuNDAlK Sub Aqua Search and Rescue have thanked people for their generosity and support following the club’s annual bucket collection which took place on a wet and windy new Year’s Eve. The bucket collection is the club’s main fundraiser each year and is vital to the group given the fact they don’t receive any government funding.

The Dundalk Sub Aqua Search and Rescue Club are a group of volunteer scuba divers who work with all the emergency agencies throughout Ireland, to help locate missing people from seas, rivers, lakes. According to club PRo Chris o’Donnell, the support the group receive locally each year via their bucket collection helps keep the group operational.

“we got drenched during our bucket collection but I have to say the support we got locally was unreal. I know of people who came into town especially just to donate a few quid to us and without support like that we’d be

struggling. It is our main fundraiser each year and we use the funds raised to maintain and upgrade our equipment. not one cent is used by any members for themselves. Recently we were called to Fermanagh for a search and rescue operation and we would have travelled in our own cars at our own expense. when we go out on dives we have to each put money towards the cost of using the boat. If we lose our equipment, for example a search torch which costs about €100 we replace that ourselves. Doing this voluntary job actually

costs us money but we are a really dedicated bunch who want to help out and try and rescue people or in worst case scenarios help return a body back home to their loved ones,” explains Chris.

“Currently we have 51 members and 11 trainees with 22 of those fully qualified. every year we are open for new members when we operate a six-month training course between September and March. we train new members in Aura before they are ready to dive in the open waters. we are very strict when it comes

to safety and every year each of our divers has to do a fitness to dive test to make sure they are competent. older members will have to take a full medical to make sure they are fit and healthy as when you dive you always have somebody with you and you have to be secure in the knowledge that you’re buddy is fit and well and able for the dive. our Search and Rescue unit collaborate with the gardaí, Coast guard, RnlI, Civil Defence and PSNi to provide significant levels of support to searches in the north East

on both sides of the border, and where necessary nationwide.

“we train all year round in Carlingford lough in all types of conditions. we go out on a wednesday and a Sunday during the summer months and every Sunday for the rest of the year. we are on call 24/7, 365 days of the year and last year we were involved in searches in the likes of Malahide, Fermanagh, Donegal to name just three. when we go on a search and rescue mission we will stay for as long as it takes. A couple of years ago I remember we were involved in a search which lasted for six weeks and that can obviously have a knock on effect on your work and family life but we feel it is a very important job and we want to help,” stated Chris.

If you were not able to go into Dundalk on new Year’s Eve to support the Dundalk Search and Rescue Club you can donate via the following idonate link https://www.idonate. ie/cause/dsacsar

DuNDAlK Parkrun closed out 2022 with parkrun number 314 with many members achieving personal milestones. The rain cleared before the start so the Christmas goodies at the finish line didn’t get soggy. organisers put the gazebo up just in case. lots of visitors and milestones among the 79 participants supported by the parkrun 14 hi-viz heroes who volunteered to marshall the event. First place went to the flying Grace Igoe who was visiting from England. There was a 50 milestone for Joseph newman and a 100 milestone for Sarah McCann as well as 200 runs for Brendan Howard.

last word goes to parkrun’s junior pocket rocket louis Behan who had a hat trick of successes at parkrun 314. He did his 10th run for his milestone t-shirt, ran a new P.B and by coming in 17th was the 30,000th finisher in the event’s history.

organisers are looking forward to doing it all again in 2023 with the next event scheduled for Saturday 7th at 9:30am. Dundalk Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly weekly 5k community event which takes place every Saturday morning at 9:30am in the playing fields at DkiT. across the north East receive ongoing support from FASN volunteers

Families

THE month of December is often a period of festive cheer for most, but it can also be a very testing and vulnerable time for those with an addiction issue or in recovery.

The stress, anxiety, and worry of having a loved one who has an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, drugs or any addictive behavior often can have very negative and difficult consequences for family members.

Those who are affected by the impact of someone else’s addictive behaviour often feel confused, frustrated, isolated, hopeless, angry, and completely exhausted. And they themselves are in need of access to ongoing support services in order to deal with the ongoing stress and strain addiction places on the family.

The Family Addiction Support network’s volunteers – a group of men and women across the north East - who are all ‘experts by experience’ and professionally educated and trained – will continue to provide family members and loved ones with emergency cover and access to support dur-

ing the post-Christmas and new Year period.

During the holiday period in Ireland, alcohol & other drug use consumption tends to rise. For family members already tip-toeing around addiction, Christmas and new Year can be a pressure cooker moment. For loved ones who are living with the ongoing damaging consequences of addiction - getting advice and support is essential.

“our message is - don’t try to cope alone.” says gwen McKenna, FASN Family Support Specialist

“If you are feeling worried, frightened, or overwhelmed –reach out to FASN – our helpline remains open all over the postChristmas period and into the new Year “

“All our volunteers are professionally trained & educated however they are also experts by experience. our stories may be different – however, we ourselves have all gone through or continue to live with the fact our loved ones experience substance misuse and addiction issues.

we understand the pressure & pain family members are experiencing and we can help them access ongoing support for themselves that will make a difference in their lives. In essence, we help family members learn to cope –and in coping, take back control of their own lives and health and well being” gwen added.

The Family Addiction Support network will be providing emergency cover across the four counties of louth, Meath, Monaghan & Cavan.

volunteers will be on call to:

Answer an ‘out of hours’ helpline supporting family members in stress and seeking help

Meet with a family member who needs emotional support or simply a listening ear without feeling judged

Support family members through the terror of dealing with drug debt intimidation and threats of violence

Provide information and options to help find ways of coping whilst taking care of their own health & wellbeing.
