By Paul Byrne Dundalk TD Ruairí O’Murchú has stressed that a cap on gas bills for residents in Carlinn Hall is the first thing that has to be done to ease pressure on them. The TD stated that there has to be an acceptance that these residents are domestic customers rather than commercial, who need protection having seen their gas bills rise in some cases from an average of around €200 per month up to almost €700. The Carlinn Hall development launched
in 2007 amid much fanfare as an estate for the future with a €2m communal heating system which ran on 90% biomass woodchip and 10% gas. It was estimated that the energy efficiant system would save residents up to 30% in heating costs. However, shortly after the launch of the development came the economic crash meaning Carlinn Hall was turned into a ghost estate with only a couple of residents living there.
