By Paul Byrne Dundalk TD Ruairí O’Murchú has stressed that a cap on gas bills for residents in Carlinn Hall is the first thing that has to be done to ease pressure on them. The TD stated that there has to be an acceptance that these residents are domestic customers rather than commercial, who need protection having seen their gas bills rise in some cases from an average of around €200 per month up to almost €700.

The Carlinn Hall development launched

in 2007 amid much fanfare as an estate for the future with a €2m communal heating system which ran on 90% biomass woodchip and 10% gas. It was estimated that the energy efficiant system would save residents up to 30% in heating costs.

However, shortly after the launch of the development came the economic crash meaning Carlinn Hall was turned into a ghost estate with only a couple of residents living there. The Biomass Woodchip heating system was later Continued on Page 2

raised the matter of the huge gas bills arriving to residents at Carlinn Hall during a debate in the Dáil on a motion on carbon tax brought by the Rural Independents

group last week.

The carbon tax was increased on Sunday May 1.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘People have spoken about the difficulties we have in respect of home heating oil, particularly in my constituency where it is used by a considerable number of people.

‘However, there are also other issues that need to be looked at.

‘This was meant to

be powered by biofuels. I have spoken to the Minister, Deputy Eamon Ryan, and others on this matter. They are to follow up with officials because this system has been utterly inefficient.

‘In the long term, it will need to be changed and improved but, at this point in time, there are people who are suffering as a result of gas prices.

‘There are no protections for them as domestic users. Beyond that, they are suffering

because of the inefficiency of this system.

‘We need rules and regulations that ensure there will not be further cases of this kind but we also need to give protection to the people affected at this point in time’.

He also said that if carbon tax is ‘intended as a means of changing behaviour’, it has not been successful and ‘that narrative has stopped’.

He said: ‘We are being told about how much is being ring-fenced from

the carbon tax. I heard that for every €100 raised through the carbon tax, approximately €14 is ring-fenced.

‘We have all seen, on some level, a supercharged carbon tax in the context of the inflation with which we are dealing. There were already supply chain issues before the start of the criminal war by Russia in Ukraine.

‘However, the fact is that we keep using terms such as “just transition” without getting down to the brass tacks. We are

talking here about people who are struggling to pay for home heating oil.

‘There are people who remain reliant on turf. We have not put the pieces in place to carry out any element of a transition, just or otherwise.

‘People see that climate change is being associated with putting pressure on individuals through additional payments. Those pressures are falling on those who cannot afford to pay.

‘If opposing climate

change is going to be associated extra taxation and more pressure on those who are in poverty, it is destined to fail.

‘We all know where the game-changing pieces are. We know the change needs to be done at governmental level’.

Speaking afterwards the Dundalk TD said he had talked last week to Minister Ryan about Carlinn Hall and had been assured that officials were engaged on the matter and will update him next week.

Conor ready for Downtown move

A Dundalk man has spoken about his reasons for registering to use a hot desk at the Creative Spark Downtown remote working hub.

Conor Marron from Haggardstown is the Managing Director for Irish Shipping & Transport Ltd. “Our main office is in Dublin but we have three or four sales reps in the area and when we heard about the Downtown hub we were very interested in the project,” said Conor.

“We decided to take a desk for the year because it offers great convenience. I just think it’s great; it’s a fantastic project.

Conor added: “It’s a great way to promote the town and for us to have a presence in the town. It’s a good way to have a little foothold here.

“It means our sales reps can come and do their calls at a desk, which is very useful. It’s also a

place to meet people.

“It gives us more flexibility. I think the way the Downtown hub has been promoted has been very good.”

He continued: “It has been very easy to get involved. I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished hub and we will start using the desk as soon as it’s available.”

According to Creative Spark Downtown manager Ciara Breen, there will be 42 hot desks available in the former Cumiskey music and nursery store, at 42-43 Clanbrassil Street.

Creative Spark Downtown will be open to everyone who wants a co-working space, no matter what sector they are working in.

Minister Harris in DkIT for crunch TU status talks Minister for Education Simon Harris visited DkIT last Friday to hold meetings with the college board of management, student union leaders and the DkIT branch of the Teachers Union of Ireland.

The Minister has previously voiced his frustration at the lack of progress DkIT have made thus far in relation to forming an alliance which would see it become a Technological University.

So far, four technological universities have been formed across the country (TU Dublin, Munster TU,

Technological University of the Shannon and the Atlantic Technological University) and next month a fifth will be formed in the shape of South East Technological University.

DkIT President, Dr Michael Mulvey’s leadership of the college was put under scrutiny last year when the DkIT branch of the TUI voted overwhelmingly to issue a statement of no confidence against him.

At that time a meeting of the Dundalk IT Branch of the TUI discussed a motion about the future of the Insti-

tute . The motion welcomed the intervention of the Higher Education Authority to assist the Institute in the goal of entering the TU process and included a statement of No Confidence ‘in the commitment and ability of the President’s office to lead DkIT to Technological University status.

A source inside DkIT stated that “The motion was passed by 99% to 1%, which means that effectively 99% of staff have no confidence in the DkIT President. In addition to his breaking of commitments members were

particularly incensed by last week’s press release in which Michael Mulvey attempted to claim as a personal achievement progress in the TU Process, which he has in fact frustrated since his arrival.”

In response to that motion of no confidence in 2020, a statement from DkIT insisted they were ‘unequivocally committed to realising its ambition to become a TU’.

“Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) is unequivocally committed to realising its ambition to become a Technological University (TU) in the near future.

On Wednesday last the Sustainable Lighting Project in Blackrock Park was launched officially. The off-grid LED lights are powered by six 330W solar panels and a 48v 2kW wind turbine. They provide amenity pathway lighting through the Park. This project, commissioned by the Blackrock Park Committee, was funded 75% by a Renewable Energy Capital Supports Grant from Louth Leader Partnership, funding from Louth County Council and funds raised locally by Blackrock Park Committee. At the launch Councillor Maria Doyle, Cathaoirleach of the Dundalk Municipal District of Louth County Council, welcomed this innovative project which she said was very much in keeping with the park’s Green Flag credentials and the biodiversity and sustain-

She thanked Louth County Council, their engineering staff, DKIT and the contractors Arbarr Electronics and McCorley Mechanical Services all of whom worked closely with the volunteer Park Committee in bringing the project to fruition. The support of Blackrock Tidy Towns and that of Louth Tidy Towns Together was also critical in the success of the venture she said.

Discounts on public transport must be extended—McGahon Commuters who use private bus operators are at a severe disadvantage as they are not able to avail of the 20% discount on public transport or the 50% discount on the Youth Travel Card, according to Fine Gael Senator John McGahon.

Speaking about the discrepancy between the discounts available to those who use public and private operators, Senator McGahon said, “The Youth Travel Card will halve the cost of travel on public transport for those between the ages of 17 and

23 and is set to come into effect on May 9th.

“However, this discount will not be able to be enjoyed by all. A good example of the discrepancy can be seen in my own county of Louth. Matthews Coaches have been operating for almost 20 years providing an excellent service to commuters from Dundalk, Drogheda and Bettystown. A return ticket from Dundalk to Dublin costs €17 whereas the same ticket on Bus Eireann costs €11. Once the 50% reduction is introduced, a

Bus Eireann ticket will cost €5.50, but the Matthews Coaches ticket will remain at €17.

“We need to provide competition in an open market to provide the best outcomes for consumers but introducing one discount for public and not private operators is not open competition. It is providing a substantial financial advantage to public sector operators compared to the private sector.

“I have spoken with Minister Eamon Ryan’s Department and they have confirmed that they

intend to introduce the 50% discount for private bus operators also but cannot provide a date as to when this introduction will take please.

“I think it is vital we provide clarity on this issue as soon as possible by confirming an introduction date for the discounts on private transport. This is very significant for the thousands of people who rely on private operators every day and clarity will allow people to make decisions, based on fares prices about future commuting plans.”

Louth Village man Sean Bird enjoyed a Bank Holiday to remember as he rode his first ever winner at the Curragh racecourse in Kildare on Monday afternoon.

The 22-year old is an apprentice for top trainer Ger Lyons but was riding on Monday for Gerry Keane aboard Ginsburg who sprang a 28/1 surprise in the PG Duffy & Sons Citroen Apprentice Handicap.

It was a well-earned victory for Sean who has had a number of near misses this year and had previously ridden over 100 horses thus far

without a winner up to Monday.

According to Sean he got a huge buzz when he passed the winning post ahead of the field.

“It was an amazing feeling and I was delighted to do it for Gerry who has been very good to me. I am an apprentice with Ger Lyons and they were all delighted for me back in the yard. The horse was a big price but I thought we had half a chance as it had rained the day before and he likes a bit of cut in the ground. He ended up winning quite cosily by three and a quarter length so I could actually enjoy

the last few strides knowing I had the race in the bag.

“My dad Raymond would have always had horses around the place and I grew up doing an awful lot of hunting and pony clubbing and a bit of show-jumping as well and I got into horse racing through a local trainer called John Larkin who I met at a showjumping event in Cavan and he asked me if I wanted to ride out for him. I was in school in the Dundalk Grammar school at the time and for transition year John organised for me to go down and work with Johnny

In-patient charge for children to be abolished—McGreehan Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed the news that the statutory public in-patient charge for children is to be abolished.

Senator McGreehan commented, “I welcome the approval by Government today for the drafting of this important legislation. This proposal is yet another important step towards delivering universal healthcare in Ireland.

“This legislation, when drafted and enacted, will ease the financial burden of parents and guardians when bringing their child to hospital for in-patient care and will help to ensure that cost is not a significant consideration when chil-

“Our goal is Universal Healthcare and this is another important step towards affordability as it will make our public hospitals free for children when they access treatment as a public patient.

“I hope that, with the

support of all parties in the Oireachtas, these charges will be abolished by the summer.”

The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has received approval from Cabinet to draft the General Scheme of a Bill to provide for the abolition of both overnight

and day case public inpatient charges for children under 16. These charges have been in place for many years, therefore primary legislation will be needed to amend the Health Act 1970 to abolish the public in-patient charge for children under 16 years of age. The legislation needed to fulfil this objective will now be developed by the Department of Health and the draft Bill will be published as soon as it is finalised.

The proposed Bill will remove the existing acute statutory inpatient charge of €80 per night for all children less than 16 years of age in all public hospitals.

Irish workers in the north are Bernard pays tribute to DkIT being ‘frozen out’—O’Murchú

t Irish citizens living in the North are ‘being frozen out’ of the jobs market in the South, saccording to Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, who says he has seen advertisements for remote working positions which stipulate tan address in the South is a requirement.

- The Sinn Féin TD -says he intends to raise the issue with the government as the Dáil resumes this week and says that ‘an immediate solution is needed’.

The issue, he says, relates to employers being responsible for an employee’s workplace which, if in the North, is deemed to be in a separate tax jurisdiction.

Deputy Ó Murchú said he had been contacted by a number of people who work for companies in the South, including in Dundalk, and who had been working remotely during the pandemic.

However, over the

Ruairí Ó Murchú, TD. last couple of months, large companies have been telling their employees who live in the North that they are not able to continue to work remotely or in a hybrid model.

In addition, he says he has seen advertisements from large tech companies operating in the South which stipulate that one of the requirements for a remote working role is a Southern address, ‘freezing out’ potential

employees from the North.

He said it was ‘ironic’ that this particular role was to service customers in Britain.

He said the practises are ‘shocking and discriminatory’ and he wants government action on the problem.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘This issue was raised with me earlier this month by Dundalk Chamber of Commerce and subsequently, by a number of people contacting my office in the last week to highlight what was happening to them.

‘In one instance, a woman from the South who was living in the North had got through to a final interview for a large tech company, only to be told that she could not get the hybrid working job as she had a Northern address.

‘A second person has told me that her company, which is based in Dundalk, has advised

her she can no longer work from home in the North, unless she goes on a Northern contract (the company has a subsidiary in the North) and gets paid in sterling.

‘I have contacted Revenue about these matters and will be meeting with them in the coming weeks.

I intend to raise this with the government this week in Leinster House.

‘We need such anomalies dealt with for those living and working on either side of the border and this is one of the continuing costs of partition.

‘We cannot have a situation where Irish citizens who live in the North are precluded from applying for remote or hybrid positions in Southern companies.

‘An arrangement or accommodation has to be found to ensure equal opportunities for those living on both sides of the border’.

Bernard O’Shea recently paid a phenomenal tribute to his former alma mater, Dundalk Institute of Technology. Bernard graduated from the Institute in 2001 with a BA Degree in Humanities and it was while completing this course he took his first steps into comedy.

Bernard’s first stand up gig was in the Institutes Mac Anna Theatre, and for someone who never intended to do comedy, Bernard O’Shea’s stand-up career got off to a flying and supportive start in DkIT. Bernard took part in a DkIT student recruitment video, he was interviewed by another recent DkIT graduate, David Hammond, who recently won the IMRO Best Radio DJ. David hosts Waterford Beat 102-103 Big Lunch and graduated from DkIT in 2017. The two men shared fond memories of their time in DkIT. Apart from Bernard reminiscing about his time in DkIT the video contains interviews with current undergraduate students and local employers and will be

Bernard said he enjoyed every minute of his course at the Institute and loved his time living in Dundalk which resulted in him making lifelong friends, ‘I’ve really good memories of DkIT, my course was amazing and my experience in Dundalk was just how college years should be, the best years of my life.’ He referred to Dundalk as an amazing town which has great history, heritage

and is culturally vibrant, he joked about Dundalk being ‘great place to get a haircut, buy shoes and have a few pints in’.

Bernard particularly pointed out the benefits of attending an Institute in a town as opposed to a city and he felt one of the big positives that DkIT has to offer, is its small supportive community environment, smaller class sizes and the relationships built between students and lecturers.

Bernard O’Shea is a twice published author.

His first book, My Wife is Married to a Feckin’ Eejit was a bestseller.

He currently writes a weekly feature column

for the Irish Examiner and is a regular contributor and content provider across digital and traditional media.

In radio he co-hosted Breakfast Republic on 2FM for five years and previously IRadio Breakfast. He currently provides content to the Dermot and Dave show on Today FM as well as being a regular contributor on RTE Radio 1. Ryan raises over €10,000 for Dundalk Dog Rescue Ryan Doherty will return from Mount Everest with a cheque for over €10,000 which he will hand over to Dundalk Dog Rescue after his courageous attempt to reach the summit of the highest mountain in the world.

The Ravensdale man’s ‘Bloody Paws to Everest’ fundraiser raised over €10,000 with his attempt at reaching the summit falling just short with his attempt called off due to hazardous weather last weekend when he was just 200 metres shy of the Island Peak Mountains in the Himalayas.

Ryan had reached the Everest basecamp two weeks ago on April 24th on day ten of his journey but the trek was complicated with a number of his fellow climbers falling ill during the climb.

At the weekend Ryan tackled Island Peak mountain in the Himalayas, which stands at 6189 metres, getting to within 200 metres

Ryan’s Mount Everest adventure helped raise over €10,000 for DDR. of the summit before the brave attempt had to be called off due to hazardous weather. Four of the team members got acute AMS , this morning a snowstorm

came in and blocked our second attempt so the expedition leader and Sherpas said it was too dangerous, one of the lads needed medical attention and was injected with dexamethasone so main thing was to get him down, we couldn’t proceed without the doc. I’m okay.

“I felt really strong

and healthy but it was out of my hands. We made our way down to a small village 1000m down and the snowstorm is that bad we can’t proceed any further. It’ll take us 4 days to get down to Lukla before we can get a flight to Kathmandu.

It was far too dangerous to proceed through the ice fall. I’m super disappointed I didn’t get to make it to the summit but that’s the nature of the beast.

The group is recovering now we have the doctor keeping an eye on the lads. Thank you so much for the opportunity to support Dundalk Dog Rescue,” he concluded.

Bobby Wain from Dundalk Dog Rescue called Ryan ‘one of life’s doers’ and heaped praise on his friend who he called ‘Half Man Half Goat’ “I’ve known Ryan a long time and he is a fantastic lad. He is one of these people in life who get things done and he has a huge heart.

I always say he is half man, half goat as he has an insatiable appetite to climb mountains and to walk in remote tough conditions and he can

do it very well. The guy would easily walk to Outer Mongolia and back and it wouldn’t take anything out of him. We are so proud

of him for all his efforts to help Dundalk Dog Rescue and we are very grateful for all he has raised for us,” stated Bobby.

Cllr Reilly condemns diesel sludge dumping

Local Fine Gael councillor has described the latest dumping on diesel sludge in the Dungooley area as an act of pure vandalism. In the early hours of Wednesday, 2 cubes were recklessly dumped close to Dungooley cross in Kilcurry.

Quite literally, the contents of the two plastic IBC cubes ruptured on being discharged from the vehicle causing the sludge to disperse across the road and

soak in across the hedgerows.

Cllr Reilly says that this area is a beautiful part close to the Forkhill river and ancient graveyard of Urnai. All-Ireland triple success for high flying Ravens

It’s been quite the month for the Dundalk Ravens Basketball Club with no less than three of their teams tasting All-Ireland glory over the past month.

On April 2nd and 3rd Dundalk Ravens u14 boys made history for the Dundalk Ravens basketball club by not only being the first u14 boys’ team to make it to the All Ireland Club Championship (AICC) but also winning the Division One AICC. It was a sight to see and the boys played their hearts out all weekend.

Coach Alan Minto had prepared his team all year for this moment. With great preparations and excellent coaching, the boys peaked at the right time and came away worthy winners as Division One All Ireland Champions. Amazing job by this team and hard work definitely paid off from Alan and his boys.

Ravens u16 girls turn to play in the AICC. Just like the u14 boys this was the u16 girls first time ever making it and playing in the AICC and history was made yet again as our girls came away as Division One Champions. This team was solid all year but lost one game to an excellent East Cavan team in the playoff final.

They took that loss and learned from it and prepared intensively for All Irelands. Coach Fu Faapito knew this team could win AICC back when they first started training outdoors May 1st 2021 in Colàìste Chú Chulainn but only if the girls played as one unit and only if they stuck to the game plans.

They did just that and more against some very good clubs in the AICC. Some excellent games from the girls on both days. Definitely worthy Division One winners.

in the AICC. Before Covid our previous u16 boys won All Irelands in 2018 and 2019. That was then, this is now. Well let’s just say the streak is still alive.

Our u16 boys are still AICC Champions. Technically that’s 3 years in a row for u16 boys and 3 weeks in a row for our Club winning All Irelands. U16s were fantastic all weekend. They definitely belonged in the higher Dundalk Ravens u16 girls were crowned All Ireland Club Championships Division One champions.

Division but we can only play where they put us and they definitely did not disappoint. Some excellent display of basketball on both days. They were definitely in a class of their own in Division Two. Coaches Elijah Faapito and Daniel Ayoade had them well drilled all season and also leading up to AICC. This team was such a joy to watch all season and to be crowned Division Two AICC Champions is Dundalk Ravens u16 boys became All Ireland Club Champions for third season in a row. just amazing.

Glenmore AC ‘Come and Try Day’ a great success

The Glenmore AC Come and Try Day got underway on Sunday 24th April with the Carlingford Pipe Band leading the procession of athletes to the field.

More than 60 athletes registered for to try out running, jumping and throwing events.

Ambassador captures the ethos and spirit of the event in “Change, I can’t into I will and soon you’ll say I did.” Glenmore AC welcomed O’Hare to their Club in 2020 and have seen him go from strength to strength in the athletics environment. O’Hare has gone on to represent Ire-

land at events such as Trigames in Ferrara in 2020, at the Come and Try Day he also picked up some medals.

Georgina Drumm spoke to the athletes on behalf of Athletics Ireland, she commended Glenmore AC, David O’Hare and all those involved in the Come

and Try Day. Drumm also wished the best of luck to the athletes competing.

Over 100 parents and spectators cheered on the athletes throughout the day, with positive and supportive feedback for further events to be held such as this around the country. The event in-

cluded a broad spectrum of ages from toddlers to teens to engage in the events, which was greatly appreciated by parents.

Overall, all stakeholders felt it was a highly successful event. Next steps involve getting another Come and Try Days underway and encouraging

clubs to get athletes who took part at the Glenmore AC Come and Try Day involved in their clubs.

A massive thank you to Glenmore AC, to the Volunteers and organisations such as the Down Syndrome Louth/Meath Branch, Warrior Wolves, Tsenya for their incredi-

ble efforts throughout this event and its preparation.

Woodview Celtic get their head in the game Woodview Celtic have sent a clear message to their members that they should never feel troubled or alone by forming a partnership with mental health organisation ‘Head in the Game’. Head in the Game was set up by a group of Dundalk FC fans, with the goal of starting a positive conversation about mental health and well-being in the Irish football community, and wider Irish society.

Many league of Ireland clubs have supported the initiative but recently Muirhevnamor club Woodview became the first grassroots club in the country to form a partnership with the group. The club have a number of plans in the pipeline to spread the message of the new partnership including putting the Head in the Game logo on to the match jerseys of the U11’s and U12’s.

According to Eamonn O’Hagan who is

“We are delighted to link up with Head in the Game who we know are doing great work to help open up the conversation about struggles with mental health. We are the first grass roots club in Ireland to get on

board with the lads and we want to send out a clear message that we are here for every single person in Woodview Celtic. There will always be somebody here for them to talk to and I think it is good to try and normalise the fact that people can feel down sometimes or in need of help. We obviously have to be careful what we say to kids that are only ten or eleven but when they ask us what the new logo on their

jersey’s are about we explain to them in simple and clear language that it just means that we are here for them to talk to about anything at anytime.

“We have access here to a lot of kids who love playing for the club and I think it’s a great idea to spread the awareness of the conversation around mental health and let them know that talking to people about their problems is a great help,” stated Eamonn.

Ardee Concert Band will take to the stage at the Bohemian Centre in Ardee this weekend.

Life truly is back to normal and back to routine and the Bohemian Centre in Ardee is no different. It has once again become a hive of hustle and bustle for musicians and Bingo Goers alike.

The weekday evenings see over 130 members come and go from the purpose built bandroom and classrooms for their weekly tutored lessons and full Band practices, twice a week every week.

Whilst on a Sunday evening down in the Bohemian Centre Hall it sees over 150 patrons take to their lucky seats

to play the age-old game of bingo and to try their chances at the big Jackpot game.

This Sundays Jackpot is €3, 300 from 8pm sharp with doors opening from 7pm so you have plenty of time to get in and get settled.

On this Saturday May 7th from 7.30pm the Reigning National Band Championship Winners Ardee Concert Band Senior Band will take to the stage to perform their Saturday Night Music from the Movies concert. Under the baton of their Musical Director Mr Ronan O’Reilly

their concert will Feature music form James Bond, The Lion King, Superman, Rocky, The Greatest Showman and Pirates of the Carribeen amongst others, this concert will have music to suit all ages!

Rockfield Estate contents are up for auction Well-Known Antique Auctioneers, Matthews of Kells, conduct a country house clearance auction this Tuesday, 10th May, at 12 Noon by order the executors of Trevor Fitzherbert Esq. (d.2017).

Rockfield, situated on the Athboy Road, Kells (Eircode A82 V9D5) has been recently sold.

A total of 928 lots, the entire contents, require a new home before the new owners can move in. The personal property & collection of Mr. Fitzherbert, the sale comprises antique furniture, old paintings & prints, rugs, a large library of books, fine silk curtains, antique silver, porcelain, collectables, etc. Some additional lots from various other part clearances have been added to the sale

by the auctioneers. “It’s a good honest country house clearance auction, for sure” is how the auctioneer describes it.

“Trevor, a lovely man, spent a lifetime collecting but he also inherited quite a few things, these too will be cleared”.

Interestingly, Mr. Fitzherbert, originally of the Blackwater Estate, Navan, has as ancestor Maria Anne Fitzherbert (1756 -1837), a

longtime companion of George, Prince of Wales (later King George).

In 1785 they secretly contracted a marriage that was held invalid under English civil law at the time, because his father, King George III, had not consented to it.

Mrs. Fitzherbert was a Roman Catholic and the law at the time forbade Catholics, or spouses of Catholics, from becoming monarch, so had the

marriage been approved and valid, the Prince of Wales would have lost his place in the line of succession.

Before marrying George, Mrs. Fitzherbert had been twice widowed. Her nephew from her first marriage, Cardinal Weld, persuaded Pope PIus VII to declare the marriage sacramentally valid Public viewing of the auction is this weekend, at the house. 11am to 5pm on Saturday & Sunday, Monday 11am to 5pm. On the day of the auction, Tuesday, there will be a short public viewing, 10am to 12, before the auction commences live online at Noon sharp.
