Super Sophie honours Calvin with medal win
By Paul Byrne
Sophie Curley Gray had every reason not to compete last week at the european Junior Boys and Girls Boxing Championships in italy after going through the toughest couple of weeks of her young life last month.
Sophie’s eleven-year old brother, Calvin, died tragically on the 19th of September, from inju ries he received two weeks earlier after falling through a perspex roof at an establishment on Clanbrassil St.
Rather than withdraw from her first ever ma jor championships Sophie (from Cox’s De mesne) with the help of her coaches in Dealgan Boxing Club in Marion park, decided to push through her grief and box in memory of her younger brother Calvin.
The sixteen year old’s debut on the international stage proved to be a memorable one as she showed determination, aggression and the ability to box on the back foot to earn a comfortable victory over Spain’s Claudia Aparici Alcaniz in the 46kg division. That victory guaranteed Sophie a bronze medal and a chance to upgrade to silver against Turkey’s eylul Rabia Duman. Continued on

Despite another excellent showing, Sophie didn’t get the nod from the judges this time which meant her first ever inter national championships ended with a bronze on the big stage.
Her coaches at Dun Dealgan were understandably emotional and hugely proud at what their young boxer had achieved and speaking
to the Dundalk Leader on Mon day, Anto Donnelly praised the sixteen-year old for her achieve ments in Italy.
“We are all immensely proud of Sophie and what she has done this week. After the tragic death of her kid brother we didn’t know what was going to happen but we had a chat with her and she really wanted to go to Italy
and fight in Calvin’s memory. The tournament was a distraction for her really and even though she was disappointed to lose her fight against the Turkish girl she knows that she has done bril liantly to get the bronze,” stated Anto.
“Sophie was a very talented kid and won national titles at U11 and U12 level. Like many other
boxers, Covid had a negative ef fect on her progression but after losing the national final in 2021 she bounced back this year to win the national cadets where she looked as good as ever.
“To go to Italy and win a bronze after all she and her family have been through is a testament to her character. When she told us she wanted to go to Italy we rallied
around her and got her ready and made sure she did her runs and she was so determined to do the very best she could to try and lift her family’s spirits. Forget about the bronze medal for a second, for me and all the coaches in Dealgan, success for us is helping young kids like Sophie becoming the very best that they can be.
We are here in Marion Park for
the last 28 years in the trenches helping kids stay out of trouble and staying fit and healthy. We train their bodies but we are also counsellors and help them with any problems they may have. That’s why when we see the likes of Sophie so such determination to reach her goals it makes every single one of us burst with pride,” concluded Anto.
Stroll for Gavin raises over €36,000
FAMILy and friends of a young man from Cooley who died sud denly in Germany ear lier this year have raised over €36,000 for two charities.
The father of Gavin Morris (aged 29) told the Dundalk Leader support ers of the fundraiser do nated a total of €36,585 to the worthy causes.
“We donated €31,585 to the Kevin Bell Repa triation Trust and €5,000 to SOSAD,” said John Morris.
“If we can help some one the way that we were helped, that was
the aim of the fundraiser. We called it ‘A Stroll for Gavin’ because he was very easy-going.
“Gavin didn’t walk,
he strolled. He would do things at his leisure. He had a very laid-back per sonality.”
Gavin had been liv
He was a former Grange NS pupil and Bush Post Primary School student. Gavin also enjoyed playing video games and was a fan of films such as Bat man.
The ‘Stroll for Gavin’ took place on Saturday, August 27 with two walks starting from John
Long’s pub in Grange. Refreshments and en tertainment took place afterwards in John Long’s pub. over 300 people turned out for the event.

Dunleer in mourning following fatal accident
THe community of Dunleer are in mourning this week following the devastating news that one of their favourite sons had been involved in a fatal accident on Sunday afternoon. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after the accident which saw a motorcyclist killed in a
collision with a car.
He has been named locally as 57-year old Joe Torris of Lawless town, Dunleer.
The crash happened near The Valley Inn, Mullary just after 1pm on Sunday afternoon.
Joe Torris was a hugely popular figure in Dunleer having worked in Pat’s Gift Shop on the main street in the town for many years. Pat’s Gift Shop was a mecca for young kids in the area selling sweets and toys and Joe spent thirty years in the busi ness before retiring in 2017. The Torris name has been well known in the retail sector in Dunleer for over half a century with Joe’s uncle Paddy opening the fam ily’s first store in 1958.
Tributes have been pouring in for Joe since the sad news of his pass ing broke with one post on social media stating his kindness touched many lives.
“Such devastating news. Dunleer and all the surrounding areas will just be numb. What a legend and a kind hearted, lovely lovely man. His kindness

touched many lives. Always a smile and had plenty of great banter with him in the won derful shop. Another angel gone too soon. God give strength to Joe’s wife, family and friends. May his gen tle soul rest in peace.,” read the message.
Another post read ‘Very difficult to get the right words about this tragic loss. Joe treated everyone the same and it was always positive with smiles and humour in abundance. A very bright light has been extinguished. May he rest in peace’.

John and Maeve launch ‘Make Way Day’
CLLR Maeve yore joined John Mor gan and Garda Ciara Mannion to help raise awareness of obstacles that face people in wheelchairs and people who are visually impaired as part of the national Make Way Day 2022.
Make Way Day is an annual cam paign from the Disability Federation of Ireland which aims to try and raise public awareness on the everyday obstacles people in wheelchairs and the visually impaired face such as bins on footpaths, parking on foot paths, putting advertising boards on footpaths, overgrown/overhanging hedges, branches/trees, illegal /abuse parking in disabled bays, bikes tied to lamp posts etc.
John Morgan who is in a wheel chair and an ‘Accessibility For All’ group member is pleased with the progress being made around Dundalk but stressed that there is still work to do to spread awareness.
“I have to say that the local author ity and the gardaí have been very proactive in relation to this campaign
and I commend the now retired Chief Supt. Christy Mangan for his strong work on operation enable which targeted people who were illegally parking in disabled spaces around the town. I think there were over 300 fines of €150 issued last year and out of those 300 four people appealed and they had their fine doubled.
“The problems I face in getting around town in my wheelchair are definitely lessening but there are still some major issues such as people leaving their bins in the middle of the footpath thus blocking wheelchair us ers and when these bins are full they can prove very hard to move. People are generally good and decent when you point out to them that they are causing obstructions but we are try ing to get the message across that disabled people are facing issues on the street everyday when they are out and about and we are urging motor ists and business owners to be a bit more careful and thoughtful,” urged John.
McGeough hits out at ‘young thugs’ for stoning bus
Sinn Féin Councillor Pearse Mc Geough has hit out at those stoning buses in Castlebellingham and Kil saran referring to them as “young thugs who care nothing about their community.”
Cllr McGeough said “the late bus from Dublin to Dundalk and also the Dundalk – Castlebel lingham – Annagassan – Togher – Clogherhead – Termonfeckin bus were stoned by youths on last Tuesday and Wednesday nights. in Castlebellingham they waited behind the wall at the castle until the bus was coming through and jumped out and began pelting it with stones.
“These young thugs care nothing about their community. These bus routes are a valuable service to the community used by people who live in small villages with their
main services in the two larger towns. They depend on this bus route to access medical care and shopping among other things. How dare these young thugs put this service at risk?
“My concern is that the service will be compromised due to safety fears and that must not be allowed to happen. We are consistently fighting for improved services like transport in rural areas and vil lages and this week will see the installation of new bus shelter in the area that was hard fought for and then something like this happens. it is not good enough. i would implore parents to know where your children are because these thugs were not adults.”
Cllr McGeough also advised that if anyone sees this sort of behaviour to please contact the Gardaí.

Chamber President asks people to consider extra costs before shopping up North
THe retail sector will temporarily come under pressure in the next few weeks with the fall in sterling and Una McGo ey, President of the Chamber has asked peo ple to consider the total costs when considering shopping cross border. These include transport cost, time, and other costs not to mention the potential loss of jobs in the retail sector. Sterling has fallen by 5% which means a maximum saving of only €10 on €200, before the extra costs are considered.
This week saw two strong indications of the short-term future for the region. The Budget was a favourable one for most sectors of the economy, including business and the SMe sector. Paddy Malone PRo of the Chamber says that most of the issues we raised in the Chamber’s Budget sub
mission were addressed.
However, the detail in some cases needs to be examined.
The details of the Budget statements were scrutinised by Rachel Dillon, Partner in ernst and young, ey at our Budget breakfast which was attended by over 200 people. The Break fast was once again
sponsored by PayPal.
“We welcome the support for energy costs but are disappointed that some professional business such as den tists may be excluded,” noted Paddy Malone.
“We also welcome the fact that there was no increase in Capital Taxes or VAT. However, we are disappointed that the hospitality rate of 9% will be abolished in February 2023
This will make the 2023 tourist season a difficult one, despite the strength of the US dol lar.
“We note the con tinued support to the All-Island Fund but note that the proposal to allow cross border investments has once again been ignored. We also note that although the Living City Initia tive has been extended in time the number of locations is still re
stricted. The Growth Centres identified in the national Develop ment Plan 2040, which includes both Drogheda and Dundalk should be included.
“We were delighted that the two asks we made last year to the Tánaiste when he vis ited Dundalk have both been achieved. Again, there is some concern over the detail but em ployers in Dundalk will be able to use the Shop Local Vouchers twice in the year up to a maxi mum of €500 on each occasion. This means that for the Christmas bonus the maximum will be €1,000 if not used already this year and that next year it could be used at summer holidays/bonus AnD Christmas. Dundalk’s shop local is the most successful in the coun try supporting the retail sector,” stated Paddy.

Louth leading the way nationally with female representation in local government
TWenTY TWO women have been elected to louth Coun ty Council since the foundation of the State and the coun cil is bucking the national trend with 12 female councillors out of 29 but unfortunately this is not replicated through out rural ireland. A seminar aimed at increasing the diversity of women in local Government was hosted by louth County Council in association with See Her elected at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dundalk today Tuesday, September 27th. The seminar included panel discussions with local and national politicians as well as speakers from diverse groups.
Wheelie Bins
Joan Martin, Chief executive of louth County Council, welcomed the convening of the seminar as an important step in increasing diversity in local government: “louth has a great diversity in its population, and it is important that local government reflects that diversity throughout all its decision making to better serve our citizens”. Ms Martin said that the seminar was not a once off event and she noted that the council would be taking actions locally through the PPn network to encourage more people from diverse backgrounds to get involved in politics and she noted that while louth County Council had “plenty of women, there was not plenty of diversity”.
Wheel Bin ColleCtions
Cathaoirleach of louth County Council, Cllr Conor Keelan noted that with 12 female councillors out of 29, Co louth had one of the higher female representations.
Cllr Keelan said that it was a “serious error of national Government to abolish town councils” as he noted they had been a “stepping-stone for female and younger coun cillors”.
in the last local elections, the people of louth were pre sented with 60 candidates of which 14 were women (23%) and they elected 9 of those women to the 29 council seats (31%). With subsequent changes following Cllr Colm Markey becoming an MeP, Cllr erin McGreehan being appointed a senator, and the sad passing of Cllrs Hugh Conlon and Oliver Tully (riP) there are now 12 women councillors in louth – and at 41% that puts them almost at the top of the leader board when it comes to women in councils.
The event featured a diverse panel of local and national politicians with the ‘Journey into Politics’ panel featuring Senator erin McGreehan and louth County Councillors, edel Corrigan, Paula Butterly and Marianne Butler with apologies from Maeve Yore and Michelle Hall.

Annual Redemptorist
novena to St Gerard Majella
THe annual Redemptorist no vena to St Gerard Majella will take place in St. Joseph’s Mon astery between the 8th and 16th october 2022. The theme of this year’s novena is ‘Let us Dream,’ based on the book published by Pope Francis.
Speaking about the novena, Fr noel Kehoe, Rector, said “our daily lives and old certain ties have been challenged and will continue to be challenged by pandemics, war, energy crisis and cost of living. our church too must address these challenges with hope and open ness. Synodality is a word we have heard much about recently in the Church. At its heart, this worldwide process is a deep lis tening to the Spirit in the voices of the people of God and the courageous discernment of the signs of the times.”
The novena is expected to attract over 8,000 people each day, with people traveling great distances to attend. This year is particularly celebratory as it is the first in-person novena
after the restrictions of the past years.
“People ask why the novena continues to be popular at a time when church attendance is going down? People experience some thing special at a novena. It is a celebration of community and faith and holds a special place in the hearts of people who have been attending over generations. It is a time for reflection, for sensing God’s closeness, for cel ebrating and praying for the gift of life, for renewing friendships and seeing familiar faces.”
“Our preachers this year will reflect this diversity of voices and guide us on this journey for nine days. We are delighted to welcome Helena Connolly, director of evangelisation for the Redemptorists, Jim Deeds, author and pastoral renewal fa cilitator, Neil Foley, scientist and lay Redemptorist missioner and Redemptorists Frs. Tom my Hogan, Brian nolan and Brendan o’Rourke.
Special highlights include the
candlelit session each evening at
9.00pm special blessing for chil dren at all masses on Sunday 9th October and a day of prayer and blessing for the sick and elderly at all masses on Saturday 15th october. Confessions will be available before and after all sessions, except on Sundays.
“Due to ongoing health guid ance, we will be unable to offer anointing of the sick or have a dedicated children’s session as was our custom. We hope to re turn to this next year.”
“So much work has gone into the preparation of the novena, and I want to pay tribute to the great team of people involved in its organisation.
The timetable for sessions this year is as follows:
Weekdays: 7.00am, 9.30am, 11.00am, 1.10pm, 4.30pm, 6.00pm, 7.30pm, 9.00pm
